In august of 06' a teenager approached our house knocked on the door and when no one answered he stole a bicycle off the front porch. he didnt know that a 12 year old girl watched him from behind the front door. she called me at work i came right home and called the police. when the police came they said they would enter a report and look around the neighborhood which they did. My father and i drove around the area and caught two kids loading the bicycle into the trunk of a car. we followed them to a house and called police and waited three and a half hours for them to respond. after reports were filed from two different police departments and a call to the deputy cheif we still haven't heard to this day anything about the matter. Hi Bill, I'm a nurse who travels a great deal, recently at the hospital that i currnetly work at a coworker was getting into the elevator in the parking garage and in the elevator there were three men. One of the men pretneded to be ill and the other two men requested that the lady help him which she did at the same time one of the other men was putting his hand into her purse and trying to get her wallet out of her purse. she caught on to what was happening and stopped them. Your show tonight really hits home. Around 17 years ago I drove down a very busy four lane highway on my way shopping around 9 am. I thought I saw what looked like a body lying next to the edge of the road on the other side of the highway. I told myself, it must not really be a person, because everyone on that side of the road was driving right by, including trucks. On my way back home almost two hours later, I was right behind an ambulance that stopped next to a police car and the "body". A I drove by, it was obvious to me that it was an elderly man lying there. I can not tell you haw terrible I felt, knowing that I had thought I saw a person lying there almost two hours earlier and that someone finally did respond almost two hours later. Since then, I have never told myself that someone else would do something. ABout 3 or 4 years after this incident, I was the first person to call the fiter station after I drove my a home in our neighborhood that had flames shooting out of eve4ry window in the house.

Mr. Stanton, I hope you will please address the terrible danger related to children who aren't taught the importance of when to scream and when not to. I've seen children whose behavior is so bad, that they scream and resist when their own parents attempt to corrall them. One time in particular, I even stood near enough to eventually reassure myself that the adult was the parent. The problem, as I see it, is that children should be taught to scream something similar to, "No, No, You're not my parent!" if someone tries to abduct them. I have my house for sale by a realtor, one afternoon the door bell ran and I heard someone messing with thedoor lockbox so I opened the front door thinking it was just kids playing as they have before. when I opened the door there were two guys and one of them had there foot inside my door step and said we want to see the house, I push the guy out of my way so he would not have the chance to get me in the house and do god knows what. after I did that they ran to there suv which was parked sideways in my drive, because I have a three car garage the driveway is big. I got as much information as I could and called the police. I wanted to know did I do the right thing, My family says I should have not opened the front door, but I did not know who it was.

I noticed alot of people are commenting on the racial aspect, when I still think alot of people wouldn't call the police regardless of the color or background of the person. My house was broken into while I was away for a weekend and when I questioned the neighbors (who all have dogs) if they saw or heard anything, they all said NO!...my hidden survelience camera revealed three black males cleaning out my house and a white woman driving a van. On another note, I was at a nite club when my purse was stolen by a girl who just told the bartender "please hand me my purse (while pointing to my purse!)"..and he did! I call the police whenever I see something weird going on, but sometimes the 911 people act like you are just wasting their time and ask so many questions that by the time the police get there, the event is over! I called 911 one night about a violent fight happening on my street...the police NEVER showed up...but the ambulance did after the man shot his girlfriend dead.

Most Americans don’t realize that other countries train there hotel personnel to a standard and we don’t. The only person who did the right thing was either Indian “from India” or a Pakistanian “from Pakistan”. Let’s give credit to those countries and hotel staffers who are trained. And by the same token let Americans know training is important. When you hire off the street you get off the street training “I didn’t see a thing”. My main comment is if that was me an African American I wouldnt of have gotten that far on breaking into the car,going into the gated community,getting into the hotel room, and also the "stranger Danger", none of that wouldnt of happen because I am black. Regarding todays show on calling the police. I lived in Tusscon,AZ for 3 months. During that time, my truck was vandalized and the stereo and cd's were taken, the police would not come out but did send me a letter for insurance purposes. Then I was physically attacked in a parking lot, and police said they might come but did not. I left town and learned not to bother the police with my minor life's problems. I watched your break in show and was please that when some one broke into my house which was undergoing renovation my neighbors called the police. Even though it was the third time in less than a year they had responded to a break in at that address, when they confronted the person inside my house they just let him go. They told the neighbor it was because I didn't have a no trespassing sign. They even left my house unlocked. I heard about this from my neighbor, but when I called the police they said they didn't know what I was talking about. I got mad and told the guy to find out what happened. He checked with dispatch and found the call from my neighbor but the officer who responded hadn't write a report. I asked him to find out why -but never heard back form them. I'm a single mom with a drop dead gorgous teenage daughter - couple your report on neighbor apathy with the police not doing anything (even writing up a report) and where am I left?

I have to say, going through the experience and watching my daughter from a distance being approached by a stranger was unsettling. I thought the show was very eductional to a lot of people in this country. All of us should be good samaritans. But I do think, Bill, that you may be looking at it the wrong way on why people don't call 911. There were many times where I went out of my way to help others or just do the right thing. I was raised that way. For some reason I get wrongfully accused of something by people or the police. I received more strife and anguish for getting involved in these situations. My parents even told me to forget what we taught you, just don't get involved and look the other way. I think too many people want to sue you, or complain how you helped them, or the police are corrupt some how. OK keeping it real ... I was born and raised in NYC, no better learning place ... it is often better for most to stay back from a situation than to endanger themselves. I can take care of myself, yet would first think that a gun or knife might be involved. Using a firm voice and have your cell phone ready to go and leave yourself an exit. Here is the problem police responce time is usually too long to give you any help. Here is a real life example ... not long after 9/11; I live in a million dollar and up area, my neighbors alarm went off and I went over to check it out ... three black males were going down the street with some hand bills .... now, I know my friends house and the alarm does not go off by putting a flyer on the door ... watching as they went donw the street ... they looked in every car and checkout to see if doors were open ... I call 911 and itis taking some time ... its a long street that is an island ... so I took my cell and drove to a narrow bridge and stalled it with the hood up acted dumb until the police finally came .. they gave me a rash of crap, did not question the individuals but waved them by .. did not even ask for id ......... a while later I recieved a call at my home from the friendly police, in a voice with a gun at my head letting me know, in no uncertain way to forget everything that had happened ....... now they are not going to cramp my lifestyle and I will always be there to help ...... how would an average person respond ????????? As you can understand I do not want my name to appear anywhere, I have a good understanding of who the most dangerous people can be unfortunatly ..... al

To A. DeHaven, Roanoke VA who asked whether dogs help in home security -- yes and no. I wouldn't recommend dogs as the only layer of security. I once managed to "break into" a house with a dog, and walked out WITH the dog. Use other preventative measures too -- security alarms, and of course locking doors and windows.

At least in my suburban city, calling the police for a burglary in progress is a waste of time. If or when you finally do get through to a dispatcher (it is not a dispatcher who answers, you have to have your call screened and forwarded) it will probably take hours for the police to get there. And you are stuck at the crime scene waiting for them. Sadly, there are just aren't enough police to bother with crimes against property. At least that's what they told me.

I believe that people dont call the police because the police are simply too busy to respond to things like that. We called 911 twice, the first time a soda machine was being vandalized and after getting transfered to 3 different agencies (city, county, state) an officer finally arrived about 20 minutes later. The 2nd, a man was injured by a moving car with life threatening injuries it took the ambulance 15 minutes to respond, from less than 2 miles away. It is sad, but when nobody gets a response you wonder why you should bother.

I applaud your expose, but it is flawed by the commentary of the so called red-headed expert who's comment alluded to the biased female perception that boys were not wanting to expose cowardise. It has been proven that girls have the flight syndrome in enabled into them through G-d or evolution if you will, and that boys do not,males have the hunter syndrome. Hence the close encounter with you at the rear of the car. I have worked in the telecom sector for over 26 years in the field and I will tell you that the whites are comfortable with solid looking Hispanics that look strong and talk well with them enternig into their house and other locations as compared to gang-banger types and black males of all types in their neighborhoods. Last year my jeep was stolen at the mall in broad day light it was even facing the street. When I went in to report it to mall security the guy who was suppose to be watching the cameras had his feet kicked up on the desk and was talking on the phone. What do you do when it's the police who are apathetic? I've lived with a meth lab behind my house (my neighbor's) for five years. I've taken license plate numbers, recorded the midnight to dawn activity, and called 911 when the smell of ammonia in the air was so strong it burned your eyes and nose. I had two different police officers tell me they'd look into it and then--nothing. I even found drug paraphernalia on the vacant lot next to us and took it into the local sheriff's office and met with a detective (on two different occasions) and still--nothing. That was nearly two years ago now. Now, when I smell ammonia, I don't call 911. When there's unusual activity next door I ignore it. I also know exactly where they've dumped the waste (I followed them once), but what good is my diligence when the local authorities do nothing? What's a mother of two, with a husband who works nights, to do in a situation such as this?

The way the units were broken into were exactly the same (using a crowbar to pry open the door). We live in a great neighborhood...this is a real shocker. One more reason that people may not want to "get involved" when witnessing a crime is that they may have had an experience such as mine with the court system. I was called to witness against a burglary suspect and waited for 2 hours for the case to come up. Then it was postponed for several days because the defendent's lawyer wasn't prepared. Fortunately, he pled out and I didn't have to lose another day of work dealing with this. I would still get involved but I would try to do so anonymously next time. (I have also stopped voting primarily because of the inconsideration of the court system for the juror's time -- our courts pull juror names from registered voter lists.)

Just watched you spray paint a wall on the Today show and you were upset that no one said anything. In todays time and even when graffiti wasn't considered an art form, most of these acts of "vandalism" were caused by young thugs who just spray their name quick on a wall in the middle of the night and run at the first sign of an adult. You on the other hand didn't seem like a threat. No gang colors. No "street" clothes. You looked like a painter/ responsible adult who might have been hired by the person who owns the wall to create something. Esp when you are talking to people on the street while you are doing it. Today people hire spray paint artist to do all types of advertising for a message or a business. Next time use a young thug looking character and see if you get the same response.

I watched your program about drugging women's drinks this evening. It's the complicity of the men that bothers me. I have had this happen to me twice, and both times I was lucky enough to have my girls with me to take me straight home and watch over me. But it was still shocking to see men not only stop you, but applaud you. Coupled with news articles detailing the violence and murder men inflict upon friends and c-workers when heavily under the influence, it's small wonder I would rather be alone than risk suffer such indignities. Sad, really.
I'll admit, I have my own scale of good and bad - I'm sure I'd watch you tag a wall and not think much of it, but I've jumped into a beating to give first aid to a homeless man under attack. All of this, is undeserved violence.
So I encourage your work. And I work hard not to paint all men with the same brush. I can say that it does not get easier with time.

The report you did last night, Sept. 3rd, on the Resort/Cruise/Time-share Vacation package with Ramada, is the same one I booked a few years ago. I paid half at first and then got apprehensive about it and asked for my money back and was told absolutely not, but they would upgrade me to an outside stateroom free of charge. A few months later I tried again to get my money back and ended up with a manager on the phone and they said the same thing, "Non-refundable" even though I had NOT signed a thing, and then offered me a room ON THE BEACH! Then They called me a few months later (right before X-Mas) and I told them I had wanted to cancel and get my money back and there was no way I could come up with the balance ($898.00) that close to X-Mas, Oh and of course they would extend my trip to 10 days! I have not used this package deal, I have NEVER signed anything...do you know of a way I can get my money back?

I just saw your segment on Ramada Plaza Resorts and was very glad to see that someone in the mainstream media is taking an interest in the fraudulent offers from this dishonest company.

I was contacted by Imperial Majesty with a phone call in late April 2007. After explaining the details to me for almost 30 minutes, I asked the customer service representative to repeat the information to my girlfriend who would be accompanying me on the trip. At no time during the entire call did the CSR say the words "real estate", "resort tour", "timeshare" or "presentation".

My girlfriend specifically asked the CSR's manager "Why are we being offered this deal? What do you and your company get out of it?" He answered "We get word-of-mouth advertising for our new cruise line!" Again, absolutely no mention of anything to do with a timeshare.

When our paperwork finally arrived (approximately 10 days before our departure date in late August) we read through every piece of paper. It directed us to exactly the same Ramada Plaza Resorts where you filmed your show and onto the same cruise ship. There was still no mention of a timeshare presentation.

Our vacation was nearly identical to the one you showed on your show, including our experience of running into many people who all felt they'd been lied to about the vacation and who were very angry that they had paid hundreds of dollars in airfare, additional fees, and for the "vacation" package itself while never being told of the obligation of attending a timeshare presentation.

While on the cruise, we were told dozens of times over the ship's intercom "There are no public beaches in the Bahamas. If you want to go to the beach, you must purchase an excursion package." While you opted for the Breezes resort excursion, we decided to skip the beach (which was disappointing but the excursion was too expensive for our vacation budget) and visited the Bahamanian tourism center where we discovered that the cruise line had lied to us; there ARE public (FREE) beaches and we were able to take a short shuttle ride directly to the beach for $8. We spent the afternoon lounging on the beach and swimming in the ocean before taking the shuttle back to the dock for $8 more and boarded our cruise ship in plenty of time for disembarkation.

I only caught the last minute of your investigative report on the Ramada Inn Vacation package and very much enjoyed the rest of your show.I am interested to know more about your experience because I bought a package last summer. I was told I was getting the offer because of my good credit rating...I was searching for the perfect gift for my parents 50th Anniversary and was told I could purchase the vacation pkg and it was transferable as a gift. I stupidly went for this deal and when I gave the gift to my parents in Jan. they went online to check out the Ramada Holiday and what they discovered were many complaints about the holiday, including info on legal problems. It was past the time frame for asking for money back, however, I did contact them with my concerns. My parents were not going on this trip and I was now stuck with it. I have only paid half the amount towards the holiday and I asked if it was possible to have my money returned, being as the gift was not being taken due to the terrible reports. Again, I was told that there were just as many good testimonials about the holiday and that in order to have my money returned to me, I would have to take the trip. I have stayed in many Ramada Hotels and have always enjoyed my stays. I did not think to question the name. After hearing my complaints at Customer Service I was sent a letter upgrading the cruise portion of my trip to a 3 night Carnival Cruise. I was also sent a letter from Daniel Lambert, Vice President who states "if you are not fully satisfied with your accomidations, we will issue 100% of all your monies to us, except any money recived for upgrading your vacation, upon receipt of your letter after completion of your travel." I live in Vancouver, Canada. I just don't know what to do. My sister and I were going to do the trip, however, after catching the end of your report I am wondering if I should do that & if there is any way to get the deposit back?

I am being stalked by some form of organized crime ring. I go to visit my daughter in a city an hr from were I live & different people will stalk me. I also live by some influencial people.(?)The authorities mention to me that whomever this is maybe watching me because they feel that I know someting or have possible seen something. Thank you . Me and my wife saw you show about dream vaction for two. I recieved a letter in the mail a few days ago about this topic. Ramada Plaza Resorts located in FT. Lauerdale invited me and my wife on a 3 nights of "GoldKey" in sun-kissed south forida. Round trip cruise to nassau,Bahamas. You get the picture. i Spoke to four different representatives from the company. the first hung the phone up on me after a ask to many questions. the second put me on with their superviser. i told them about your show , that 1omin ride to the beach,the small pool on the cruise. the time sharing classes. The third and fourth admitted that it was their company that was on your show and still try to defend their actions, in vain i might add. Once again thank you very much,me and me wife look forwand to viewing more of your brosdcast

I watched the movie and I see some points we have considerate on hotel S & S. Normally hotel personnel know the rules, but he or she may help the guest just to help them. This is really a thin line. Thank you very much for bringing this into consideration.

thanks to you I kept my pocketbook tonight! My husband and I went to a stripclub. One man struck up a conversation with us and kept getting closer to asking us if we knew of work due to moving into the area. Then he brought his friend over. I was the DD, so very alert I thought. I got up to go to the bathroom and as I turned the corner to come back the coat toss was over my pocketbook, of course my husband did not notice thy were keeping him busy talking. I caught him redhanded! I said go ahead take my seat give me my stuff!! They left where we sat and did not return. It was just like I saw on your show, one friendly one kinda arrogant. I just wanted to say thanks for making me aware of my surroundings.

I saw your Dateline special about Ramada Plaza Resorts. I purchased the same trip and I am scheduled to go in January. They called me two weeks ago and told me the ship is in "dry dock". They're also refusing to refund me the $118.00 I paid for port fees and taxes even though I'll be spending the entire time on land. When I suggested they at least throw in some complimentary theme park tickets to make up for cancelling the cruise, they had the manager, "Angela" call and verbally abuse me. She said I wasn't intelligent enough to understand the ship was not sailing. Of course, they'll cancel the trip, but they won't refund my money.

Dear Mr. Stanton,

This letter is to thank you for all you have done in your efforts to keep all of us but especially our children safe. Every time you appear in a segment on NBC showing children what to look out for I show it to my girls over and over again and discuss it with them.

I have two daughters, nine and eleven. I talk to them constantly about possible dangers. I try to do it in a way as to not scare them to death or make them suspicious of every one but to look for the signs that something is not right and to follow their gut when something makes them feel uncomfortable or suspicious. We act out scenarios with ways people might try to trick them and what they should do. We’ve watched many safety videos.

Every time I watch one of your segments where you pretend to be the bad guy I watch enthralled and put myself in the place of those parents who, like me, swear their children would never fall for such obvious ploys. I watch at the shock on their faces when their child lets the stranger in their house or leans over the open car trunk to get food for the puppy. I cheered those young girls who stood back knowing something was so very wrong and I wonder what my children would do?

Mr. Stanton, please continue to do these pieces as often as you can. There can never be enough education for our children. It rips my heart out every time I hear a news story about a child or teenager abducted and hurt or killed. I would welcome you coming to my neighborhood to do a segment on stranger danger. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you are looking for your next location. And again, thanks for all you do!!! You are a hero in my eyes!

I am looking for a truly provocative question that we might ask in Chicago that would unlock some of the buried or unformed ideas that many participants have been vaguely touching on or not getting out at all in the other dives...a sort of swing for the fences question if you will. PLEASE, just ignore this note if you have too much going on, but I would love to hear your answer.

How could companies go on offense and aggressively combat and prosecute threats?
Reverse of "defense" model
When/how should organizations collaborate or "go it alone"
What are the weaknesses of this approach?
