Due to a recent spate of burglaries in our neighborhood, I am thinking about getting a burglar/fire alarm system for our home, What should I look for in a system before purchasing one? Also, someone told me that in NYC where I live, some security systems are illegal and the police won't respond. Is this true?

You looked too trusting (or just plain nuts) and definitely NOT suspisious enough when breaking into the cars and homes. You need to "look" like you're avoiding getting caught. Keep looking over your shoulder and I bet more get involved. (I would hope!)

Although it is a great idea to show how easy it is to get ripped off, it is not a great idea to show everyone how to do it. Yes I understand that the criminals already know this stuff they may not know all of it and can now branch out into other criminal activities. A car thief may know how to break into a car but have no clue how easy it is to get into a hotel room but now he does. If you need ideas for shows try reporting on how insurers are ripping off the public, governments and businesses buy underpaying auto accident claims and how the direct repair program (DRP) shops are helping them. And now because insurers are underpaying the claim the shops are not repairing them safely. More than half of all major car accidents are repaired unsafely.

I am worried about the “Crying Wolf Effect”. When I see someone breaking into a car or an old lady gasping, it will probably be Bill Stanton or someone else setting me up. I am to be mocked on camera for over- or under-reacting. The next crisis around me will have me standing and watching, not taking the bait. When asked why I didn’t do something, I’ll say I thought it was just another Bill Stanton set-up.

Wild Bill, I work for a large company and we are huge on safety. I am using your dvd " breaking and entering ", but mainly your part on how predators lure children from there homes and parks cd . I am using it for our safety meeting. For me, as a father of one going on #2, my biggest fear is someone taking my daughter. She is 4 years old, and we as parents must teach our children what to do if they are approached by a stranger. We have started doing the role playing with her, and it's a great thing to do with your kids. There are probably more of those predators/pedaphiles out there than we actually know about. It can happen to anyones children. I thank you for doing what you do, and helping many people be aware of what is going on, and how we can prevent it. Your special on dateline was awesome.

While I think what Bill Stanton is doing is interesting and probably effective in raising public awareness of safety and social responsibility issues, it is totally irresponsible and counterproductive to say anything about the need to CALL 911 (?????) for the situations this guy has created. Obviously everyone doesn't know that 911 is for EMERGENCY LIFE OR DEATH SITUATIONS situations, not for someone defacing property with graffiti. I cannot believe Bill Stanton or the show's producers didn't stop this wrong message from being aired. Emergency services everywhere have a hard enough time with uninformed, uneducated people who waste the police and fire department's time and resources with inappropriate calls.

Hi Bill my name is Ed and I just watched your lasted show one segment was on durging womens drinks and I know this is a reality but this is not exculsive to women I had a friend I wont mention there name but they have a son they where afried he may be getting into gang activity so the shipped him off to Fl. so his relitives he was staying allowed him to go to a teen club and someone durged his soda and raped him I feel this is more common than we here about and I also feel these teen clubs should not be allowed

I just watched Wild Bill Stanton: Watching Your Back. Of the three families that he challenged their children, only one child did not let him in. I think one important message here that could have been related was that the kids who had a friend or another family member there were more likely to let him in because they didn't feel as vulnerable. Only the girl that was alone was scared enough to do the right thing. We always tell our kids there is safety in numbers. Don't walk home alone, etc. Somehow this message may have carried over to this situation. I think it is worth mentioning. We can never talk too much or give of children too much information to keep them safe. Good show Bill, very informative.

I am trying to find out specific information relating to the date rape drug, known as Roofies. There was the following segment that mentioned it.

Wild Bill Stanton: Watching Your Back’ on-air TV segment mentioned a lady that traveled around discussing how to protect yourself from the date rape drug called 'roofies.'

I can not seem to find any on the internet information as to who she was or additional information on the 'test strips' she was putting into the drinks to see if they showed the drinks had been tampered with.

Having a daughter at college, I would love to find out where the test strips can be purchased at so that I can provide them to her and to her dorm room mate.

Can you help?

i just watched "Deal or No Deal" nd calledmy girlfriend because she paid for the same Florida trip cruise and all. What can she do to get her money back? I have not seen the paperwork as of yet. This was the first time seeing the show and it was an eye-openner. It took my attention away from one of my favorite shows on one of the other channels, keep up the good work. Might I suggest an episoide on getting ones money back from schister companies?

I love the fact that "Wild Bill" advocates individual responsibility and awareness. As a society, we have become so apathetic and always ready to blame someone for our troubles or problems that exist. If each of us looked out for just one other person, criminals wouldn't stand a chance. Look at the brave few on FLT 93. They knew there was a very real probability that they would die, but they took a chance to save lives--that is also what our police, firemen, military do all the time. We should help them out, support them and say thank you by not letting criminal behavior go unpunished. Let's get more Bill Stanton's out there!!!

We were thrilled to see Kelly and Becca on Dateline! We have had them speak with the incoming freshman on our college campus, and they are terrific. I think your segment on date rape drugs accurately captured what so often happens. It was shocking - and is certainly something college students need to be more aware of. I think it would be really beneficial for Dateline to do a whole segment on date rape and how both women and men can protect themselves.

Regarding persons not wanting to 'get involved', i.e. call the police, I recently experienced 3 middle-aged, white women do nothing, even when asked to call the police. A white couple in their 20's were arguing outside of a public building with two young children standing by, very uninterested, almost as though they were waiting for the fight to be over, as if they had seen this before. The man grabbed the face of the woman and screamed at her, face to face. I entered the public building and told 2 women at the desk to call the police because there was a 'domestic' outside. #1 asked me what a domestic was. #2 said she didn't know the phone number. #1 asked if he were hitting her. #2 was a little hesitant to call, so I made the call from my home phone. I returned to this public building and another woman waited on me. She mentioned that while eating lunch, she heard a horrific argument, she thought someone might get shot. I pointed to #1 and said, I asked you to call. She said, 'But I didn't see them.' I asked #3 what she did. 'Nothing, I might get hurt if I tried to break it up.' I asked her if there were anything else she could do. 'You mean like call the police?' Yes. 'I never thought of that.' So if someone had been shot, how would you have felt? 'I would have felt terrible.' 3 middle-aged women, and not a brain among them. All raised families and have grandchildren. For only one out of the three to call for help, someone would have had to have been shot. Not one felt any responsibility for not getting involved. I still shake my head when I think of this.

Dan, I can't thank you enough for the segment you did with Bill on date rape. The woman who was a victim was a perfect representation for all college girls out there. We all believe we are when with friends and never think "something like that" could happen to US. I was shocked and dismayed by what was seen by those men- disgusted.
I really think you should do another segment purely focused on this subject. There is so much more out there that needs to discussed and it is important that young people see these things!
