Oh my, I don't know where to begin this is the first time I have ever used a blog. I saw your story tonight on Dateline and could not stop crying after hearing your ordeal. Elizabeth you truly are the most courageous person, smart, beautiful survivor I have ever heard about.

I believe an older person would have struggled with this, never mind a young person as yourself could have endured what you did and live to talk about it. Out smarting the devil is quite the accomplishment and I am so proud of you.

My prayers go with you and your family as you try to find some normality in your life. I only hope you do try to find a way to forgive him for his sins so you can be set free from the pain he has caused you and no longer have this as your burden but he will then carry your pain at which time you can and will be set free forever.

You and your family are what the meaning of survivor is all about. Mom and dad I don't know how much anguish you must have went through, but I can only imagine because my son was missing for a week and I nearly lost my mind.

I am so sorry for what you had to go through and i wish that you never had to go through that terrible time in your life, you are a very stronge person and i am so proud of you, and like your mother and father said over and over again, you are a hero and so brave, so keep thinking of that you beat him, you out smarted him. I hope every young person has seen this and learned from your actions, I have told all my girls to watch and to read this story so maybe if they were ever in the same spot you were in that they would know what to do, i have always tried to tell them to do exactly what you did, but now hearing it from someone who had to do it maybe that will drill it into their head, I have five girls and it is real scary that it could happen to them, oo to anyone else and i wish to God that it did not happen to you also, and i keep praying maybe that the people in the world today was not evil, but i know that thier are alot of evil people out there.
I have one child who has gone through so much , we moved to a small town, thinking that it would be better for them because of the gangs and the drugs, but i was so wronge, the small town and the kids never gave my baby a chance first it was the girls who were jealouse of her cause she is so pretty and tall and a body to kill for and the girls were very mean to her and never included her in anything and they called her every name in the book and she was only nine or ten years old, and I kept telling her that they would grow up someday, and that she was a better person then them, and the older she got the worse it got for her the boys all asked her out and she was not enterested and she turned them down , then they started to call her names , and saying she did things and she didn't I know this cause there was always someone with her, so now she had to put up with the girls and the boys, she would come home crying to me all the time, one boy kept putting his hands down her pants, i was at the school three to four times a month to try to fight for my daughter and it did me no good and she started to rebell and started to act up because of all this and she would fight with us all the time and and she ran away from home several times ,she would run away with people she never knew and it was men who always picked her up to take her some where, she trusted these people, who knows what could of happened she could of been killed or raped her, also finally i found out it was because she did not want to go to school again, so i finally pulled her from the school and i and they were no help i kept asking if they knew of a school on line that would not cost us a arm and a leg but they would never help us, and then the srs got involved and they helped us, but the damage was already done she has no confedance at all and she is no longer in school she just got a knew job, I pray one day that she will get her confedance back and she will go back to school even if it is on line. So i am sorry for what happened to you and i wished that you never had to go through that, but with your story out maybe it will help some other girls.
you are a hero and so brave you are a very good person and so is your family and i hope life treats you and your family well from now on, keep praying and think good things cause you all deserve it.

I think this is one of the many similar stories, sadly, where we find that law enforcement officers do almost everything wrong. Thank God Elizabeth was able to save herself. Certainly, law enforcement was ill-equipped and unable to do so.

I am reminded of the Jessica Lunsford case where this child was within feet of officers knocking on the door where she was held captive. She was still alive and with a known sex offender. The residence was occupied by relatives of this known sex offender and within 150 yards of Jessica's home and place of abduction. Obviously, if law enforcement officers would have simply conducted a thorough search of this suspect residence, Jessica Lunsford would most likely be alive today.

If law enforcment officers had conducted a THOROUGH search of Vinson Filyaw's last known residence, Elizabeth Shoaf may not have become his victim.

Then, there is Anne Sluti. When she was finally able to reach law enforcement officers to apprise them of her whereabouts, they were so confident she was still in the residence that they waited for more than 1/2 a day before ascertaining that actually, NO ONE was in the residence. ??? At a time when they would have been just minutes behind them, law enforcement officials chose to believe there is no way they could have escaped???

Please...these instances are in 3 different areas of our country with completely different officials...all of whom displayed extraordinary incompetence.

Surely there is a better solution.

There is a technique known as Eye Movement Desentization Reprogramming (EMDR) that is extraordinarily effect in treating the symptoms of PTSD. It is my sincere hope that if Elizabeth is still experiencing PTSD, that her therapy will include EMDR. It is highly effective.

my husband is a cop, and i'm very proud of the way the department handled it. they went by all that they had. and didn't give up. people don't give cops enough credit or respect. I think that the ones with negative comments should live a cops life or his family's lives for one day while they are out there protecting us and making sure we sleep good at night. some of them should have to see or hear stuff on the news about cops being killed or injuried and be that wife while her heart drops thinking that could be her husband. don't down the ones that keep your family safe at night!!! People always asked me after I had survived two craniotomies and a cereberal hemorrhage why I always wanted to share my devastating story with others and celebrate those incidenets as my "re-birthdays"... and as in your case, they are memories that will never be forgotten, therefore why not share them so that others can be more aware of what can or may happen to them, right? I still do no understand why Amber Alert was not used. And I think it was incredibley stupid to put her text message on tv. That could have been her death sentence. The only one who saved this girl is herself.
