This event was truley horrific. My prayers were with Elizabeth and her family throughout the whole ordeal. I live in the same town as Elizabeth, and my daughter goes to school with her and It was almost unreal that something like this happened, espically in our wonderful little community. I am so glad and thankful that she was found and that her abductor is put away. As far as I am concerned, he should be put under the prison, just like he put Elizabeth (underground).

I feel that there is not enough attention put to this type of madness. It's happening too often and in some cases the victim doesn't survive the ordeal. I feel that the laws need to be stiffer and harder penalties for such a hiddous crime need to be enforced. It's really getting out of hand how many cases are reported and how many children and adults are put through such pain and madness due to someone elses crazyness. (I feel that the first time they are caught and convicted they should be put away so that they don't commit the same crime.)

I too would like to express my thanks to Dateline for sharing Elizabeth's story. Elizabeth is my cousin and I was in the courtroom when the judge sentenced that evil man 100 plus years without the possibility of parole. The joy and relief that filled that room was something I can't explain. I watched my young cousin stand tall and strong as she had to relive the accounts of her abduction on that day with this monster just feet from her and the family. I could only imagine what she has to live through every day since that horrible experience.

I thank God for bringing Elizabeth back home, and for giving her strength to do all she could to survive this horrific ordeal.

I would like to thank all of those who participated in the search and recovery of Elizabeth.

What can be done to educate law enforcement departments like the one in this case that paints too many cases of missing children with the same brush? I understand that in many of these incidents it does turn out that a missing child has run away. But with the same principled conviction and zeal that we consider a possible perpetrator innocent until proven guilty, couldn't there be a way to extend this attitude toward the possible victim? It seems that after knowing Elizabeth's parents after a short period of time, it would have been determined that a profile of this young lady, confirmed by her teachers and friends, would differentiate her from a likely runaway. And in any case, if the Amber alert is activated at once...the way it is designed to be used, wouldn't it be better to chance rescuing willful a runaway in that net rather than miss the chance to find a kidnap victim in time to save her life? My heart goes out to this wonderful young woman and her family. She is an inspiration to us all.

I was the victim of a stalker for 1 1/2 yrs and raped by him the next and stalked another 1 yr before he was caught. Unlike Elizabeth I never saw my attacker. So everywhere I was, I was in fear of others. Robert Lee Elliot was caught and sentenced in 1996 to 350 years(150)yrs for me. But, I gained strength from forgiveness. People like that want you to remain a victim the want you to hate and fear them, but to forgive them is strength. I had the police duobt me, tell me I was was overly emotional that an attacker would not come back.....but he did.
You can play a victim the rest of your life by not forgiving and hateing or forgive and be the victor.

I also saw the story on the Today show this morning and will watch dateline... as a mother who is well aware of the horrific things that happen to children and teens much of which, I am sure, doe not make the news.

Our own teens and young adults (three daughters ranging form 15 to 19) think "it can't happen to them" and I worry everyday with the kinds of socio-paths out there.

I saw Elizabeth and wow. I a so sad for the things she had to and will have to face from this horrible ordeal. I am glad she is getting the help she needs and sooo happy for her family. It must have been horrible. In reading her words I can truely see how her faith helped her though the moments day to day... and her inner strength which prevented her from giving up.

I don't really have the words to say to adequately express what I need to say.

Elizabeth Shoaf’s story is horrifying enough without seeing her attacker exploited for ratings.
I hope that Mr. Morrison, and the all those connected with this story, think about the countless sex offenders and crazies out there that dream of someday being interviewed for their stories, or having their manifesto’s read on air and posted online and then think of how you perpetuated these dreams and made them seem a little more real and within their reach!

That said, I would also like to say that I think it is awful that Dateline decided to allow her kidnapper the chance to tell his lies that he claimed to be his side of this story. Doing so was the wrong choice. He said he was looking for publicity, which I of course realize was not his real motive, but none the less, at this time he IS seeking publicity and Dateline should have not aided in that. I don't think it was fair to Elizabeth that you aired his ridiculous comments. He should not have been given a second of air time to speak, he does not deserve it. He was simply indulging himself and those moments on camera gave him satisfaction, and why would Dateline want this animal to have another moment of happiness after what he did to these children?! Also, I do not think it was AT ALL appropriate that Elizabeth was asked by her interviewer to give specific details on what happened to her. She is very young and may not have wanted to have been asked such personal things about such a horrible experience, to later have them shared with millions of strangers who viewed the program.

I am 38 now. When I was 15 I was a runaway and I got into the wrong truck. He kept me in the sleeper compartment for days and hurt me repeatedly. As I was watching your interviews with Elizabeth and that man I found myself watching your face. When you talked about how she was able to save herself, I started to cry because when I was with that trucker no one knew where I was and he knew it. In the end I was able to get away from him because I told him I would jump from the truck if he didn't pull over and that even if I was dead they would know what he did to me. He did pull over and let me out. I never told anyone what happened back then because I believed it was all my fault (for running away and getting in his truck). When I was watching the interviews and reading what you wrote something lit up in me as I realized that I did get away from the guy who had me. And that is a good thing, a strong and good thing that I was able to do. Thank you for what you said, you wrote. I can't tell you enough how much it means to me these 23 years later.

You have such a good start with all the support you have from your family. Also remeber that your family is your most important people. Your family is your support... keep them close.. and let them do what they do best.. and that is to be a family... sleep well knowing that before you go to bed at night that you can think of positive things and that will help you to keep that bad things out of your dreams.. but it takes time and practice.. Just lay and think of all the things you love the most each nite and soon you will have good dreams.. that is what I had to do. I wish this could be the last case ever of someone who has been assumed a runaway (or in some cases, assumed dead) by the authorities when they are actually in dire need of rescue. Sadly, there are probably others out there right now. God knows who and where they are, so we should all pray for them to escape. Not only for the victims of sexual abuse, but also the starving children we hear about every so often who have been singled out as scapegoats by their caregivers. God hears our prayers and will find a way to set them free. I have been praying for the secret captives ever since the first instance I heard of, so each time I hear of someone being found alive, I know that my prayers were added to their loved ones' prayers and God answered. God gave us free will, but he hates evil just as much as we do.

Elizabeth, I just watched you on the Today Show after taping the show on Friday due to work and I was totally amazed at your bravery. You kept your wits about you and did something most other 14 year old girls would never have thought of. I hope that your story helps other young girls and teaches them what they can do if it ever happens to them. Staying calm and acting like your captors friend really helps keep you alive. I cried the whole time watching you and your mom tell of the horrible ordeal you went through.

I am so glad you are seeking help. A similar situation happened to me when I was 15, (although) I was not kidnapped but I was abused for 9 years and was too scared to tell anyone about it. I plan to write a book about it some day but I wish I had seeked help after it was over. I know it would have helped me.

There is a rape epidemic in America. All of us need to be on guard at all times (especially women). We have a countless number of sex-offenders in our communities, so many that law-enforcement can not keep track of them. Also, law-enforcement is not very able to catch them once they do offend (just look at the low number of rape cases that are actually solved). Everyone has to protect themselves. Women need to stay in groups as much as possible. Every home should have a security system. If you can not afford a security system, get a dog with a loud bark that will wake you up if someone tried to break into your home. And ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, MAKE SURE YOUR DOORS ARE LOCKED!!! Most of the rapes that I read about involve the offender entering a home through an unlocked door. That or a child abduction/rape while the child was going to or coming from school. Mr. Keith Morrison/NBC, I really appreciate all of the attention you give to this very under-reported issue of child abduction/rape in our society with this story and with the "To Catch a Predator" series (please keep doing those sting operations). I would just ask you guys to also start reporting on rape stories around the country, in general, and also do stories on rape prevention tactics (especially for women). As I said before, there is a rape epidemic in this country. Please do all you can to raise rape awareness and what people can do to better protect themselves from rape.

So, this guy was already wanted on an unrelated sexual assault. Too often we hear a horrific story like this and then find that the person who committed the crime has done it - even been convicted - many times before. I remember a couple of years ago hearing about an assault on a woman by three men who had 43 counts of aggravated sexual assault between the three of them! 43! And they were allowed to be in a situation where they could continue to assault others. I feel this is the worst crime because it can rob someone of their life without actually killing them. WHY do we not have greater punishments?? I do not want to hear about a petition being signed to force a child molester to move out of his new apartment down the block from a school, the only block child molesters / sexual predators should be in is a cell block.

Every parent in the world needs to go to our government and demand new laws to protect our children not the monsters. Even when they claim it is the first offense it only means the first time they have been caught, there victims are too scared to come forward. Every rapist, pedophile, and murder should be sentenced to death. Everyone needs a fair trial, legal aides need more funding to defend them to make it fair, and when proven beyond a reasonable doubt they should get the death penalty. I will pay more in taxes or what ever it takes to build more prisons to keep these monsters off the street.
