The Russian government seems very suspiscious to me. When he was making the statement about not having any involvment in the murders he was looking off to his left. I hope this crime is solved soon and justice is brought for that poor woman.

The case is complicated to say the list. It could be Litvinenko himself, who poisoned himself eccidentally, while handlaing dangerous plutonium. It could be his wife, scared of him provoking threats towards their family. Pollonium also could be planted into lab results after Litvinenko's death with purpose of blaming Moscow. Situation of rebellious journalist suspisious of Moscow's revenge was perfect for
that. Plus, pollonium contaminated fish could come from British seas, making it highly desirable to turn attantion of the public away, toward Moscow.

There is in fact one theory that may not have been explored. The killed russian spy's wife might have been blackmailed secretely if she had relatives left in Russia. If that was the case she had to choose between her beloved husband and her family.

I have no theory, but a question. Since that poison is powerful, what about the cup and spoon? Would it be a concern to the person who handled and washed them or even the next user? All of the people in the FSU and Russia have known for years that their government is run by the mafia, is full of corruption, and are a bunch of murderers. Yushenko and Timishenko tried to block all of this in Ukraine, and even Yushenko himself was poisoned, probably by Putin, since he was not his first choice. Kuchma was in bed with Putin and both endorsed Yanukovich - another murderer.

I thought that the story was very anti-Kremlin as a whole. I think that the story severely down played the fact that there is bad blood between Vladimir Putin and Boris Berezovsky, therefore down playing a motive for Berezovsky to attempt to frame the Kremlin.
While the story showed much "evidence" against the Kremlin, I thought it was interesting that it also included the bit that the Kremlin can account for 100 percent of its Polonium-210!
I'm not calling Putin, Nikolai Patrushev (Director of the FSB), or anyone else within the administration with the authority to order such a murder a saint by any means, but there is a lack of hard evidence linking the Kremlin to Litvenenko's murder.

On a side note: I don't think that Anne Curry could pronounce slain journalist Anna Politovskaya's name (throughout the story, she only referred to her as "Litvenenko's friend")!!! Did anyone else notice??

It is known that fish in modern time seas is containing pollonium ( and plutonium, and uranium), especially fish from the coastal areas, where all the industrial waste goes. Once again, I don't mean to refer to Putin as a saint. However, one would have to ask the question: Why would the Kremlin use a chemical like Polonium-210 that can be traced all over Europe? Why not just put a single bullet in his head and be done with it?

I think the use of a chemical shows that someone wanted to make Litvenenko's murder an international headline and cast a bad light on the Russian government, something that the Kremlin would surely NOT want if it was responsible.

Who killed Alexander Litvinenko? Follow the money, only a state government can afford Polonium 210 (Po-210).
Polonium 210 is extremely expensive, from DOE Oakridge Y12 plant it cost around $3200 per micro curry (1 millionth of a curry) with a lethal dose being around 512 micro curry; therefore a lethal dose cost around $1,640,000. A drink with this isotope would easily require 10 time the lethal dose level. A fast flux reactor at Oakridge is the only US source. A similar fast flux reactor in Russia is their only source. This material is not from radioactive waste. Waste material with this high of a level of Po-210 in it would have been easily traced and to hot to handle without protection.
Po-210 has a 138 day half-live meaning this isotope is a made to order material not economical storable.

I'm pretty sure that Lugovoi and Kovtun murdered Litveneko. However, I'm not so sure that it was on orders of President Putin. Many things are done in the name of such an important political figure by informed and influential underlings who often keep the boss out of the loop. Any high government official with access to Polonium could have influenced the two men with money or promises of power to do the deed. Perhaps Russia should be asked to permit UN weapons inspectors, or Scotland Yard to inventory their cache of Polonium.

My friends, my neighbors who live worldwide,

I have some thoughts about this murder, but more importantly the reason this happens worldwide to people you may never know... but are your neighbors in a global sense.

To begin:
Because traces were found in the sushi place but not where they were sitting i wonder if maybe the killer(s?) were following him. (just a thought)

There is too much info not reported in the NBC show, so it's hard to solve any more than just reading the forensics. But, those facts include more than just the evidence in England.

The greed involved in killing a person who's opinion or understanding is different... is downright frightening and worldwide! To say and act that way will surely mean that if someone (Buddha, God, Mohammed, Jehovah, Jesus, Zeus, etc. etc.*) comes along and speaks differently or against the worldwide 'greed' or government and supporting corporate framework is killed or otherwise silenced... we the people may never hear his or her voice! Pity, does that mean we'll build crosses that might come in the form of polonium? (i'm being rhetorical) If you don't see that truth it's just because you don't want to! We may have killed a God head... then many believe, the way we act (globally and personally) tell me that YOU ALL (not me) may kill the next one too.

Greed is in charge, it runs the government in every country. It makes all the decisions. Our "In God We Trust" country has in charge of it's fragile economy nothing but a bunch of 'money changers' called the stock market.

Jesus, would be angry with us to allow this 'greed for money thing' to control our lives, futures and very souls indeed! There are other forms of greed, some for power, land, drugs, property, fame or sex (there are more, but you get the idea). The cruelest poison to deliver from human to human is greed (and polonium is just one strain, lead is another, anthrax is too... etc.) i know because it's been that way all my 'me generation' life, it's been that way at other times too, i know... but i'm alive now. Take advantage while i'm here, the way things are going it may not be for much longer. I am sorry i said what Jesus would do, i don't want to be connected with the hypocritical world of evangelistic preaching in anyway. In fact no one can say what Jesus (or any Godhead name you choose) would say or do.

So, i should say, "I am ashamed of our system and society for following a 'game' where it's okay to lie cheat or steal (just the fact that it happens at all is a show of 'lower-selfness' as compared to showing your 'higher self'... dig?). But i'm not here to complain or point fingers... i have answers. I have a valuable valid view upon 'the game' we daily die for, and i understand how to kill 'the game'... not 'the game' killing any more of us.

I wrote a book about it, and i'm deeply involved in writing the second. Even if you totally see my point in my book as you are reading, and you agree totally... you're still sure to enjoy my life's story and how i came about a totally different cohesive understanding socially. The White Light was only the beginning.

Problem is, i point fingers. I name names. I pull NO punches and take the blame when it is due. But society made me write 'one-of-us' because of this greed monster killing anything that gets in it's path.

I may be next, or maybe not... but i implore you to examine the meaning behind crime of any sort and i'm sure 'greed' will always be at the root.

It grows everywhere and i explain (in the book) that many others are hollow pots full of fertilizer, so anyone could be next.

Interesting story. Ms Curry does a great job. After watching the show, I concluded the Russian expats were acting exactly as drug traffickers. It seems to me smugglers and traffickers were carrying "the goods" around to prospective customers and end users. Think, why would an assassin sent to poison a specific someone spread the poison around and all over everything? No! A professional killer would do the deed cleanly as possible and get away ASAP. Further, the poison would be kept in its sealed container until ready for use. The fact that traces show up all over indicates the container(s) was opened at various locations. Moreover, Polonium-210 is a heavy substance and would not leak out into the air from a sealed container by itself. This guy accidently poisoned himself. Mr. L did in fact have sensitive info. and for all the readers that don't know - more than 250 journalist in Russia have been murdered since 1992 - all of them were critics of the government. Russia is in crisis. There is no rule of law, no freedom of speech... Putin and his henchmen run the country and the FSB carried out orders from the top make no mistake about it. Not only is Russia one of the few places on earth that stocks polonium but it was traced on the very planes the 2 FSB agents took from Moscow to London and the very places they visited in London. Gee, isn't that a coincidence. The cowards that murdered Mr. L almost murdered many more but instead those innocents will most likely suffer the consequences later on down the road. To whom shall they take their inquiry. I visited Russia numerous times in 2005. My friend is a well known journalist there and stated there is a code of silence. No journalist is willing to speak out on government abuses, bribery... for fear of the lethal repercussion. Mr. L's murder was inevitable and he himself knew it. That is the price that is paid when a Russian journalist, former agent... dares to speak the truth on the state of Russia today. Sadly enough no gov. wants to put pressure on the Kremlin for fear of the political ramifications and certainly no Western media is going to keep the pressure on until the murderers are brought to justice because everyone knows the Kremlin would have to be put on trial. Russia's friend, Italy has already publicly asked the UK to let it go. Let it go- just like that. Let's let the Kremlin get away with it and just maybe the freedom of speech, the press, the right to vote your own governors into office... will miraculously be restored. - just like that.

It's sad the way Litvinenko died. I thought the journalism in the story was lame and all about ratings. You try to make a saint out of a low-level spy with a big axe to grind against Russian Govt. after he gets fired for corruption and using excessive force. I read he was trying to blackmail Russian oligarchs.
Putin has his hands full trying to prevent the oligarchs, Islam and Russian mafia from trying to take over the Russian Govt. All we ever hear about is how Putin is undermining Democracy.

You see your editor didn’t notice a contradiction I did.

Russsian would never say this. There is no “angel of death” in Russian language. It was written by Englishman in other words faked.

… but he died of heart failure caused by a vicious poison.

Whoever wrote this doesn’t know that people affected by radiation don’t die of heart failure. In Chernobyl, they die of kidney and liver failure, because the heart is big enough to fight radiation.

Just two hours before he passed away scientists at the special lab at last discovered the poison which killed Alexander Litvinenko.

Earlier they said he was poisoned by thallium. That means they don’t know what they are talking about.

And sealed casket means there is no Alexander in this casket.

I can continue and go trough the whole report and show you why it doesn’t make any sense. Mr. Balding, it could be a good TV Series about this mystery of the century.

In seeing the story and then reading other viewers comments, I believe the authorities involved should check into the possibilty that Sasha was accidently poisoned as he was working a deal to sell the polonium to a third world country such as North Korea. Its very possible that he was going to transport the polonium in a condom that he swallowed the way drug smugglers have been known to do and then it ruptured or enough polonium was absorbed into his body that it wound up poisoning him. The story details about his meetings with the agents and then with an oriental man with polonium tracks being discovered sure points in that direction to me.

I agree, that Litvinenko's deathbed speech does sound strange, from Russian guy's mouth (my first language is Russian) Thus, it could be containing a code. Remember, in "Da Vinchi Code", phrases that sound odd are coded messages, that's all. Plus, Litvinenko in bed looked so much like an "angel" guy from the same movie. I am inclined to believe the Italian involvment, probably in smuggling pollonium, or bying. Secret organisation?

After having had my heart broken by Russians posing as lovers on the Internet, and involving me in a Credit Card Scam; I say there is no telling to what lengths they will go to to steal anything: money, power, security, and even feelings.
They are a race of ruthless people that cannot be trusted with anything, and will kill for a trifle.

Russia is the only recognized producer of polonium-210; the USA is the principle, if not sole, buyer of Russian polonium.

It makes no sense that only one of several potential suspects was pointed at. And the fact that polonium was used strongly suggests a conspiracy to implicate Russia, especially with all the anti-Russian rhetoric that's been going on.

What is interesting is the radiation found at so many locations, from London to Heathrow to Russia and in between. I was convinced at first that it was a KGB plot, but....I have to wonder at the radiation being found at Boris Beresovsky's office. The radiation found at the airport and abroad can be attributed to Lugovoi and Kovton and it is improbable that KGB agents would be the source for the radiation in Beresovsky's office. Could it be simply about money? Beresovsky no longer wants to fund his friend's writing - have Litvenko's politics changed at all? Or is it a money-saving move, to save some funds for a future expensive purchase?
My Theory: Why not get rid of Litvenko once and for all, and point the finger at an easy target like Putin, who'd ordered Litvenko to kill Beresovsky and who was in the news already in connection with the slain journalist Politkovskaya? Beresovsky gets his revenge on an old enemy!
Beresovsky convinces Lugovoi and Kovton that killing Litvenko can be more profitable than using him as a security business advisor. Beresovsky has the available funds for bribery and the cost of the polonium. He could have enlisted Lugovoi and Kovton to bring over the polonium, and it would have been fairly easy to tamper with the tea at the hotel. Because they were exposed to the radioactive material as well, Lugovoi and Kovton would show symptoms, but they probably took precautions to ensure they wouldn't die from the exposure.
If this isn't a government murder plot straight out of a James Bond movie then it's probably about money and power.

As a Russian, I assure you that there is the word Angel of Death in Russian, angel smerti. After all, Russia was a Christian country. The word was used by Russian national poet Pushkin. As for the letter, Litvinenko simply dictated it. And he was a writer and journalist. So his Russian was perfect and cultivated. His Russian original was translated by Goldfarb into English, read to the dying Litvinenko in English and he signed the copy in English.

Traces of Pollonium go from Moscow to London? They do not produce pollonium in Moscow! Traces were planted sloppily in a big hurry, the deliverer did not go farther than Moscow, to Siberia for the lack of time and lack of entry to the pollonium plant, someone from the West.

This was obviously done for the media, and judging by the comments here, it has succeedded, as fell on already fertile ground. Smart move by someone, to create such a big story over a nobody like Litvinenko.

As for Putin, he headed FSB (equivalent of FBI), he is not a communist (althogh as everyone he had to be one before), he is a frequent church goer as far as I know.

Read the book, nice conspiracy theory but not very convincing if you know Russian reality.

Scaramella did not have any "secret" documents throwing light on the murder of Anna Politkovskaya in Moscow - he had 4 pages of two e-mails sent to him by Evgeny Limaryov on 30 and 31 October with the false, SVR-concocted warning that lives of Guzzanti, Scaramella, Berezovsky and Litvinenko were in danger. Sasha did not go to the Berezovsky's Mayfair office after the meeting with Scaramella to copy the papers - in fact, he went there about 1830 and from there telephoned Akhmed Zakaev to give him a lift home. Litvinenko met Lugovoy and Kovtun at 1630 at the Pine Bar of the Millennium Hotel but it is almost certain that he was not poisoned there at least because he left radioactive traces ealier that day. By the way, Lugovoy's hotel room at the Millennium, the Pine Bar and the Itsu eatery are still sealed.

If one follows the trail of radiation..it must have picked it up in the restraunt with his first contact and the emailed hit lists. Either Scaramelia spiked the bottled water and had that particular bottle handed to his victum when buying it or it came from the e mails themselves. The trail then follows him and ties all the suspects together in their travels. If one could pin point when the radiation first appeared at the airport, (before contact or after) that would narrow it further. It did follow both Kovtun (ex wife's apartment in Germany) and Lugovoi. again, if it could be narrowed to time of contamination, the story would be solved.

Litvinenko was NOT poisoned before November 1 - this is in fact the Kremlin's version intended to tie up Kovtun here and present him as a victim of an assassination attempt. I am trying to explain that (i) Litvinenko had another meeting with the Russians (publicly unidentified) on November 1 during which meeting he was most likely poisoned; (ii) Lugovoy and Kovtun should not be considered as murderers but accomplices. I recently gave a detailed analysis of the Litvinenko operation in an article "How to Kill a Dissident. Part I" published by The Salisbury Review (Spring 2007, Vol. 25, No. 3). Very interesting story. However, doesn't it seem odd that Russian government would use the only weapon that is 100% traceable back to Russia. Russian special forces have hundreds of other ways of killing someone with out anyone raising their eyebrows. There are poisons that are untraceable, or a simple shot would not have raised such attention. In my view, it was done either directly by the opposition of Kremlin to discredit, or by Litvienko him self, who was in no way significant to todays Russia and wanted to "die" while trying (by trying I mean he wanted to die and brink the Kremlin down); this is not to say that I support Kremlin, I just think it is way to intriguing and if Kremlin is behind this, this is the dumbest way to kill someone.

Litvinenko was killed because he spoke out against the apartment bombings in 1999 that shook Moscow. He spoke of how only a short time before FSB security services had placed bombs in apartment buildings and they had been found. The FSB at the time claimed that it was a success against terrorism, but then later called it an "Exercise."
Later the bombings happened. They were pinned on Chechens. It was the major reason for starting the war. However Shamil Basayev denied that he or any other Chechen had anything to do with it. Basayev declared that he was responsible for other acts. Litvinenko also claimed this was FSB.
The war restarted in 1999 to keep the issue of Chechen Independence quieted, since the fate was supposed to be decided in 2001. Now that Russia has invaded Chechen independence has been wiped out of the options.
Litvinenko was talking out about it because the entire war was started on false pretenses. Many innocent civilians have been tortured and murdered because of the supposed terrorist apartment bombings in 1999. Yes it was an act of terrorism, but it was the Russian Security Services, Putin, whom were the terrorists.

It is unclear what you mean by "unusual bank withdrawals for large sums of money". If you have in mind sums like 10 mln dollars, forget about it. This polonium poison doesn't have high value - it was just some press speculation based on Oleg Gordievsky's good joke.
To Andrei, Hudson, NY: there are communists in Russia and there is the official Communist party. In spite of the massive Stalin repressions of the 1930s, only about 20 mln, not all of them communists, were exterminated. Now, many at power in Russia are former communists, actively using the ideas of Karl Marx to make their private capitals and those of Lenin to get rid of their opponents. The Litvinenko case is a good example.

To Piero, Italy: No, Eugeny Limaryov did not know about the meeting. He in fact asked Mario (Scaramella) NOT to show his two e-mails to Litvinenko. And this is a total media invention that Igor Ponomaryov could have anything to do with the case as Paul Joyal could have nothing to do with the case as I stated in the interview to the Radio Liberty on the night of his shooting. The only fact was that Ponomaryov worked for the IMO (International Maritime Organization), a conference of which Mario attended in London on November 1 and his passing off was indeed rather unusual, but things do happen. He actually died, as you know, on October 30, so it would be hard to tie him up to this case. Whatever the press claim is pure speculation. Sorry.
For those who are interested, a recent NY Times article (18th March) with some "new" revelations by Kovtun can be called nothing but stupidity supporting the Kremlin version that Kovtun was poisoned on October 16. As the British authorities know that this is groundless rubbish, the Russians are not admitted to London.

There are a few things that appeared in the past time and that seem to have been unnoticed by those who follow the Litvinenko case. First of all, there was a two-full-page article in the Sunday Times of April 1, 2007, by Martin Sixsmith, whom I was unfortunate to consult, and who published the first book demonstrating that Putin and his clique had nothing to do with the murder. Second, there is an article in the Guardian of today saying that in the 1930s and shortly after the war (WW II) there were double agents among the Russian emigre community in London who worked for the NKVD: a story cocncocted by the former head of the Service A (desinformation), Gen. Lev Sotskov, aiming to accuse the emigre Russian community in London today of being agents of the Russian secret service. Third, the Russian persecutors managed to interview Boris Berezovsky and Akhmed Zakayev in London and then lied about those interviews in the Russian press depicting the victims in the unfourable light. All that shows that the Russian services were involved and that the cover-up campaign does go on. It is strange and unjust that the British authorities are keeping silent - it there not the right timing yet?

Paolo Guzzanti is now reporting on his blog that Mario Scaramella is now in Hospital for having suffered of a new heart attack. In the past weeks he had got many other illnesses such as tachycardia, collapses, high blood pressure, blackout, thyroid and prostate swell and hair loss. Nobody took him in Hospital before.
His ex-girlfriend visited him two days ago and she reports that he has told her:
“I will come back soon, I only have to tell them (to the Prosecutors, en) what they want and they will let me come back”. She also says “…he told me that if he continues believing these tales (that he must trust the law. My note) they will keep him in prison as long as two years, and he cannot make out of it! Unfortunately this is the truth. I realised today that he will not came out of it. The reason and the truth don’t give him any hope. These are instead his weakness”.
Paolo Guzzanti adds that it seems now essential to clear and make known that captain Talik, the slandered, is one that has been working in former Soviet Union, in the once called IX KGB Directorate and that today has assumed the denomination of FSB, that is to say the service for presidential security. The fact is that in that same service have been working also two well known gentleman: Andrey Lugovoi and Dmitri Kovtun, both of them investigated in Great Britain as material killers of Litivinenko. We also know that Talik, still furious for having read one year ago an interview of Litvinenko to Novosti in which he was described as a terrorist and a weapons contrabandist, told by phone to his cohabitee: “We must shut up this asshole. I want to know where he lives and exactly all the rest: I have many friends among generals in Moscow and I have sent somebody to tell them what I think” – Talik said.
Mario Scaramella, Italian citizen, with a clean record, former fellow-worker of the Italian Republic Parliament, is victim of a system and of a juridical practice we all are ashamed of, and that is even impossible to explain to all the foreign journalist colleagues who ask for information on this matter, buried in Italy under the most obscure (but not so much) manoeuvres of political back-lines.

A theory ? How about looking at facts without emotion although I can not help but have empathy for his family and friends.
I think that humans have a way of getting themselves into messes and one persons view is not necessarily the truth or the whole truth.
A public book as what he wrote, was like playing jury,judge and sentencer of others personal lives. The public accusations may or may not have been true. But to destroy anothers character without it being legal, is truly slander and gossip. I think that if we are going to write a book about other people, perhaps we should ask their permission, or at least interview them ? Whether anyone admits it or not, the questions left to the world about that book have destroyed the viewed character of at least one other man in the world, and with or without evidence, this will not change public opinion, and because there were no lawyers, no juries, and no judges, this could in fact create the emotions that created this sad obvious murder.
Often we try to play God, when we ourselves are guilty of evils too. If you are in such a mess for real, why not go to the authorities and ask for legal help first ? This is the part that makes me question litvinenkos book and statements. This public smearing campaign should have been dealt with by legal authorities if it was absolutely true, and even his own wife questioned his technique on how he was dealing with it. This is cause for doubt in any court of law, now. It causes doubts for me therefore I hope that it causes doubts for a majority.
But a theory is that yes, someone could have done this to bring Russia down, and the reason I believe that it is a possibility is because all of my life, I have only heard negative things about Russia and the Russian people, yet, nobody, and really no governments willing to help lift the people and the country. Only to obtain, retain, and project a negative air about a whole country ! This behavior of pride and demanding to be superior has damaged the lives of many Russian peoples, so that they are forced to leave their country to go to another one to survive better. While I believe that Russians government is capable of helping their people, This has been an international problem, just like Africa. Many of us could have found a way to help personally within the country to the best of our abilities, instead of judging when we have no right to. He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone.
Those guilty of this murder, no doubt, have done the same thing, except they played jury,judge and executioner. The sentence of a public shame may ultimately be worse than death itself if people buy into this in the wrong way. Without evidence, we should doubt. I cant stand the new guilty until proven innocent judgments. This leads to serious injustices around the world. While I understand that Judges and Juries are not God either, at least you have several minds working on it, than just one or two.
We must not forget how damaging slander and gossip can be, and how huge the tales can grow and be twisted as they are carried on by different peoples perceptions of them.

I do not think that we should judge in public, but then again, maybe public embarrassment is a good way to make people behave ?

It is incredible the degree of blind ignorance that runs rampant through 99% of typical reader's "theories". Most are fueled by anti-Soviet prejudices or Hollywood's notions of "how the world works".

Clearly Berezovskiy, in an effort to cast the shadow of blame on his old enemy Putin, used his financial power to secure a small, but lethal amount of the Po-210 and paid Lugovoi and Kovtun to administer it to Litvinenko at the sushi restaurant. They, in turn, not realizing that their temporary exposure to the toxin could result in their own illness, did sustain a residual non-lethal dose by accident. This merely served to cast them in the light of "fellow victims" and dispel any thoughts of their involvement. All playing very well into the hands of Berezovskiy, who has successfully cast shadows on his old nemesis Putin and the (surely not pure) Russian government.

Guys, if Kremlin wanted just to eliminate person it would have done it clearly and easily. If plutonium were involved then who ever ordered the murder needed radioactive track. Kremlin does have very good reputation and does not need any tracks and problems. Berezovskiy openly said that he will be creating problems for Kremlin and plutonium also found in his office. Make conclusions this is clearly another provocation against Russian government.

I have watched with great interest your piece on the Litvinenko murder. Emerged from your program is a somewhat one-sided portrait of a former KGB agent who had waged a lone war against the Russian government/KGB/FSB by speaking the "truth" and ultimately got murdered for it. Without any evidence of the Kremlin involvement in the murder, I do not believe it lives up to the standards of good journalism to even imply the participation of the government and the president of the other country (be it Russia or some other country) in such an act. Overall, your piece left a clear aftertaste of anti-Russian propaganda, which makes me wonder if the Litvinenko story is plainly used this time to manipulate the public opinion and to drive the two countries apart just at the time that they should be working together.

Given that I believe Lugovoi and Kotvun are innocent the fact remains that these two men left long trails of polonium 210 wherever they went. I totally buy into their belief that they were smeared somehow with this substance. Lugovoi had to have been tainted with polonium before he left Moscow. Then Kotvun was also tainted with it before he left Hamburg. If one assumes through logic that these men are innocent this is the only solution. Although it sounds like an elaborate conspiracy theory, it is the only possible answer.

I think the best course of action for the authorities is to intensely investigate who Lugovoi and Kovtun interacted with the day of or the days pior to their trips to London. But another puzzling aspect of this mystery is the fact that Litvinenko left a trail of polonium after leaving the Sushi restaurant in London the day of his murder. He must have been smeared with the polonium at the restaurant before he was poisoned with it at the bar that night. The only reason I can think of to do that would be to incriminate Scaramella or to just confuse the police when they discovered the polonium trail.

Your story on the murder of Litvinenko by agents of Putin was well done. Knowing the history of the KGB, or any of its incarnations, one can see the hand of this terrorist organization in the death of its former agent, considered by them a traitor. Putin once headed that organization and clearly has the power to get his revenge in a manner designed to hide the cause of the assassination. That Putin might be a pedophile is not a surprise because a former head of Soviet State Security, Beria ,was a known rapist and got away with it because of his power. This only came out when he was deposed and executed with a bullet in the forehead. Putin's judgment will come, but not in this life.

Well there are only two plausable theories here and both are disturbing, NO ONE without exceedingly significant resources would even have access to P-210. And what single person would expend 2-3 million dollars to be kill someone even if they had that kind of money? This is a crime investigated by the most respected police organization in the world.

The mechanism is one which could only be carried out with the complicity of individuals of a large secretive state with a history of ruthless acts, and with the infrastructure to provide the murder weapon.

The victim was a person who had made himself a prominent enemy of such a state. A properly executed hit would carry a strong message.

Done unofficially, the murder would be attributed to the state, but without unassailable proof it could be denied with impunity (as only enjoyed by a state.) Layers of deniability...and the legal immunity of a sovereign state.

A state governed by a person closely associated with the organization most likely to have the ability to carry out the crime. A culture which does not forgive or forget public embarrassment.

It is possible the operatives were unaware - dupes. Lenin spoke of "useful idiots." The state can hide behind sovereign immunity, thwarting investigation, fearing nothing.

I just caught a rerun of this last night. I believe the use of plutonium (rather than cheaper, easier methods) was for two reasons. Yes, the culprits probably wanted to make Litvenenko suffer. I think he was also being used as a human guinea pig. I think the gov't is preparing for worldwide nuclear attacks and wanted to test the effects and after-effects on humans.

Someone could also be testing to lay the groundwork for a systematic terrorist attack that would slowly wipe out the population of a country without destroying the entire planet. You could liken it to Hitler's attempt at eradicating the Jews.

Just a point of correction in fact - several people refer to "plutonium" but actually the substance involved is polonium, far more rare and not occurring in nature. It can only be manufactured in any quantity in a very few reactors.
