I think this show is very beneficial. I am an adult , and used to go into chat rooms, you never know who would be in there. I did meet four men, an dprobably could've me more, but it was definately not safe. I have three boys, two 8 yrs and one 11. I am sp glad they just want to be kids, for those who feel they need to chat, call on the phone, there are alot of crazy people, and I took to big of a risk meeting those guys. They could have hurt me or worse. I was lucky. Please do not take that risk. Live life to the fullest, without chats,all preople want is one thing, and are obssesed by it.

I think your program does a service to the community. My only question is why don't you ever have a show in an inner city neighborhood. Children there are at risk just as much as any suburb if not more. It dosen't have to be the projects but somewhere with a lower economic structure. I feel that since predators are expecting you to only be in the suburbs they will feel more secure to exploit poorer children...just a thought..

Reading most the post from pro's and con's of this show surprises me. Has anyone actually talked to a victim up front. I myself starting at age 9 was molested. After recieving therapy I am now I would say 99% percent better, and realize at 9 I was too young to stop it and it wasn't my fault. But I will live with this the rest of my life unlike a molester he/she will live with what got them off and if caught maybe a couple years in jail. I have to live with the fact a person was dirty enough to take advantage of me at such a young age. But what make's it worse is when people actually are doing something to fight this others are shouting entrapment, Rating hikers, etc, etc. For the child does it really matter how it gets stopped. In my old neighborhood there is 280 molesters, in my grandma's neighborhood there is 180. There is something seriously wrong going on where that many people are taking advantage of children. So why not do what we have to do to stop it or you can go up to a 9 yr old child and look in there eye and tell them "Sorry you got molested and your innocence was taken but the molester has more rights then you" that is basicilly what you are telling us victims.

There's something not quite right about Perverted Justice. I used to peruse their message boards and you didn't have to register to do so. I think would be more beneficial if you had punishments for the kids talking to the adults as well. Today the kids are not as innocent, they know about sex and find it to be more appealing to date older men. I'm not saying that the older men are not wrong but you need to attack it on both sides. Maybe you set up kids and the adults in your sting operation. Most of the men own your show who were caught seem to be outcast of normal society which would cause them to pray on the younger kids. Get these men counseling and stop filling up our jails with these people help them. Give them mind altering drugs to control there urges that is just as addictive like cirgerretes to keep them using it. In the old times men in there 40s would go after young woman and marry and it was okay. We have to break that idea in our times, but be more productive than just sending them to prison.

As a 52 yr. profesional male, these men and all men like them deserve what they get but I would like to see more balanced reporting that covers mature women (aka "cougars") stalking young teen men.......I think you would be surprised that this issue is 50/50. I would like like nothing more than to see women leaving young male teens homes and being told to drop to the ground by law enforcement as they attempt to flee the scene. I can never praise you guys enough for your Dateline segments 'TO CATCH A PREDATOR.' They are by far the best Dateline has done and I've been a fan for years. As a child victim of such predators, I am so sick of hearing what some critics have to say about these poor pigs and that Dateline is wrong for doing these episodes. I was raised in multiple foster homes and group homes and repeatedly molested by those who were paid to protect me. I ran away at a very young age and was again used by some of the lowest forms of life. I invite one of these critics to speak with me, in person as I can attest to the damage it can do to a human being, let alone a child. To NBC I say, keep it up with the Dateline series and Thank You so much doing these shows. Unfortunite it is that the very broad basd laws have nothing to do with reality. True pediphiles are a species negative. The guy or gal who comes out of a bar with what turns out to be a "underaged" person is some kind of criminal ? That needs to be exp-lained. Also asking for sex in a chat room is dangerous as criminals can scam un suspecting victims. the best is two reforms a webcam and a law that considers "likness theft" to be a crime as well as a civil tort. "Singles" or "dateting sites can be compelled to do two things verify as best as cam the age of the participant and when a member quits their profile ,picture is archived no to be seen unless they (the person) rejoins. One big objection is to delete predator as it is a emotional word and inaccurate.

There is another side of this story that is not being reported on by Chris Hansen the folks at Dateline NBC. The use of the internet to solicit young 13 yr. old girls (decoys) is not unqique to males. There are professsional and blue collar women from all walks of life (just like the men that were profiled in last nights episode) who just like the men are using the internet to solicit underage boys! Even though it is not as "main stream" or prolific it does happen and would probably pull in incredible ratings for NBC! Viewers must be presented with the reality that it's not just men who use the internet to solicit young girls. I've seen stories in local papers of women getting busted for the simlar abuses. It make sense too...consider just for a moment how many young hormone infused boys that are on line and in those same chat rooms that would take a woman up on her offer to meet (decoy or not!). As a viewer I would appreciate it if the Producers of this series would consider doing a report on the other side of the issue. I'm certain that with a little bit of work Perverted Justice could help you arrange a similar sting on females predators. Thanks and keep up the good work and for protecting our children. No one is in favor of sexual predation on underage minors. However, given that the actress in your sting operations was over the legal age of consent (which is 16 in KY), and that no sexual activity took place, I am wondering what criminal charges were made against the would-be predators? Is attempted solicitation of someone perceived to be a minor a crime in KY? I am also wondering why the police are acting so violently in arresting non-violent offenders (multiple policemen with drawn guns threatening lethal violence, forcing the arrestee to lie flat on the ground). Have those arrested signed consents to be on your program? If so, have they been financially compensated to do so? Is Dateline acting within the law by inducing individuals to solicit underage girls for sex? Have there been any civil law suits alleging entrapment?

It just goes to show that this is a perverse sickness that plauges even the well educated. These people need to be caught and dealt with. It seems like more and more I see in the news that teachers of the female persuation are not exempt from this sickness. I was shocked to see them in Bowling Green! Every time I would watch a "To Catch A Predator" show I would always say...why don't they do one here in Bowling Green! Low and Behold...they did! I'm glad that this show is going to different places trying to put these predator's behind bars!

I was shocked with that one fellow who was getting ready to approach the young lady before Chris came into the room...I was just thinking to myself...what if that was not a setup...what would have done to her? That is a really scary thought!

I have a few questions regarding this show.

I undertand that a few of those people might be dangerous predator but don't get me wrong those people should pay for their improper behavior.

Nonetheless, I am just a little worried about the decoy.

I just don't get it when the person posing as a little girl answer positively to explicit sexual offers she gets from those predator, doesn't it send a wrong message to little girls of that age? That you can answer positively to sexual request from old people since the State and the cops are there to protect you?

I understand that this is a decoy but in real life 100% of prudent little girls should answer a clear NO to ALL sexual request, end the conversation right there and report all details to authorities RIGHT THERE.

In real life, a girl that answer positively to pervert sexual proposition from men might not loose its virginity to some 40 years old sexual pervert out there but will definitely loose it to some 15,16 or 17 years old kid who will get away with it just because he is a minor if she hasn't learn to just say NO, be firm about it, not wishy washy like the decoy and learn to defend herself.

Besides this interrogation, you guys are doing a fine job. Nonetheless, to me when a girl in age of answering yes or no and is well aware of consequences or at least should know better if she answers yes should have some part of responsibility in that. Don't get me wrong, I am not defending those people who should pay.

I am just stating that even though she might not have the legal age for signing up a contract, her parents are and should also be aware of what she is doing. In the real life, should a parent who learn that her daughter acted so unresponsibily over the net should be happy about it? I am not telling you about the growing number of parents that think that the net just like TV is some kind of babysitter but about the parents that try to raise responsible and well aware kids out of this world and even a 6 years old can understand that.

Hello Chris: You series is very good, and lets america know that child molesters don't always look like child molesters. They could be your next door neighbor. The only problem I and many other police officers have is the police procedures used. There is no reason for those officers to tackle someone to the ground after they have their hands up and giving up. This shows the american people that police want to rough you up even when you giving up. This is no longer the image Professional police officers of the future want to convey. The men that came forward to meet the decoy in this show truly deserve the punishment that will imposed on them. Like everyone else it is fair to say that most rational individuals abhore the preditors that unfortunately roam the internet but in all fairness I am bothered that I don't see any young girls and their parents being booked for solicitation either. MSNBC doesn't have a problem showing news footage of Britney Spears climbing out of a car without underware or any of her contemporaries acting out in similar disgusting ways on TV. If your only content to report on half the problem then don't report on any of it. The young ladies that put themselves in these positions might be young but they are savey enough in the ways of sex and solicitation to get men to respond. There should be a sting operation to entrap the young internet cruisers and they AND their parents should be held equally accountable on camera to explain their acitons. The sting operations that are going on around the country are nothing more than a knee jerk reaction to a very serious problem but also to extremely poor and irresponsible parenting. I have worked with law enforcement on several cases and what you don't show are the pictures that the girls are sending out to these men. Like many of the "ligitmate" stories or ads that you run, acceptable magazines on the news stands or any of the multitude of sources that these girls educate themselves with to taunt their sexuality, where is your coverage of that half of this story? Thge Media has become content to chase sensationalism and although Chris Hansen appears to be a competent reporter I think your just pandering to the dollars and ratings.

Just Reading some responses I wonder how can you not appreciate what this show is doing. As far as doing it in rich neighborhoods in the suburbs. I think they explained that they do that because lets face it we know in inner cities people wouldn't be shocked but show a rich neighborhood where people think money makes them safe then everyone becomes aware and take precautions. Mean think about it if you are in the inner city you make sure your doors are locked on your car and purse and whatever is in the trunk. a nice neighborhood like the ones they show on to catch a predator gives a false sense of security and you don't do the same thing do you?

To the comment of why don't they catch men looking for boys but they catch men looking for girls. They have caught a few guys looking for boys like the rabbi, the guy at mcdonalds. The DC show had a few but still less than a 1/3 of them were gay. Its just that there are more men looking for girls than boys. Out of what 30-40 men only one or two are gay in most of the investigations. Plus they are talking to victims they are posing as kids waiting for men to contact them. So actually they just prevent those guys from getting another child.

Its not giving boys a false sense of security they show guys going for boys it just you have a better chance of catching a guy looking for a girl than a boy. Its like why they don't catch women pedophiles. Women who are pedophiles typically go for kids they know and have a relationship (like the teacher with student scandals....almost always female teacher with male student) That was also explained because people asked why is it only men.

Mr. Hansen, I was watching your show on tv the other night about how to catch a preditor and was amazed at what I saw and also very concerned. You see I truly believe along with others that my ex-husband is on the path of being a preditor yet the court systems simply wants to brush is own confessions under the rug. He is and was always obsessed with pornography (his type of porn made playboy and hussler look like mother goose) He has admitted to having intercourse with a 15yr old babysitter when he was 25yrs old and frequents prostitutes. I was able to receive an order of protection against him for me and my two daughters both of which want nothing to do with him yet the courts still award him supervised visitations which allow him to be alone with them because the supervisor doesn't monitor him during the visits. Since then my 6yr old daughter has come forward with some situations that happened with her father while he was watching her. Again CPS and the police have pressed charges against him however for what he has done his punishment is simply a slap on the wrist and nothing more. I saw the charges that these men were facing on your show and I feel that they only went with the intent but yet my Ex has fulfield the whole act and has admitted to it and yet there is nothing that is being done. How is it that our court systems fail so many children? Yet when something does happen the courts look at others to blame for not protecting the children. I admire your show because you are truly looking out for kids against preditors before something happens. I am in fear for some little girl who may come across my ex's path and wonder if something terrible will happen and by then it would be too late because the damage would already have been done. You have been faced with these type of people before. I ask you do you feel that my Ex is on the brink of being a full fledge preditor or petifile? If so how can I get the courts to listen before someone gets hurts? He is smart and knows just how to act and knows just what to say to the police,CPS and the judges. He had violated the order of protection on a number of occassions and nothing is done for it. I tuly believe that the order of protection for me and my daughters is not worth the paper it is written on. And I fear that another child will be harmed because of him. I don't even know that you will even obtain this to read but hopefully someone who does will be able to help me and my daughters get the justice we are looking for and prevent another child from falling into his trap of deception.

It's frightening how many people still support this lame excuse for a show. Does the term 'civil rights' mean anything to any of you? I agree that child predators are bad people. But so are murderers, rapists, thieves, drunk drivers, and a bunch of other criminals. The only difference is that those that I mentioned are considered innocent until proven guilty. Anyone caught on this so called "news" show is grilled by smug-ass Chris Hansen to confess to the so called crime they allegedly committed before the police even arrest them! Doesn't anyone else see the problems with this setup? Don't get me wrong, these are not good people that are being caught in these stings. But there are even worse people out there who don't get nearly as much media attention! This is the twelfth investigation of this kind. The twelfth! This stopped being news at about investigation one. Wasn't it bad enough that a man shot himself in the head in order to keep from being humiliated on your show? How many more people have to kill themselves or someone else before you people WAKE UP? You're all saying how 'great' these investigations are and how you wish they would make one every week. Well, when one of your relatives are caught and all of their constitutional rights are taken away, let's see how you all feel about pseudo-news programs taking the place of law enforcement. Kentucky officials spoke louder and clearer, than, any, of the officials, anywhere else, regarding the purpose of the show. As strong as their message was, we can, only, hope, people are, finally, getting the message and our children can be safer. I can, only, imagine, what would be happening, had, that one, been real.
His planning was poor, enough, without attempting to photograph a, naked, thirteen year old girl on the same film he has photos of his wife and daughter.
What would a real thirteen year old girl think with a thirty three year old Air Force man approaching her like that, especially, in the privacy of her, own, home with nobody, else, there? She would be, absolutely, helpless, especially if she didn't have the same, immediate, interest, in sex, as he did.
A, good, reason Dateline should keep the new episodes rolling. The, progressively, updating examples, like this one, will, never, stop shocking the members of the Dateline crew or the viewing public, no matter, how long, they keep it on the air or how many years the show has been going on, so far.
I'm glad there wasn't, really, a minor, alone, with this example. Like, I said, Dateline has saved, many, lives. There's no telling, what the outcome, would've been, had, that one, been real.

Me and my husband watch every episode of "To catch a predator" Main reason being my two step sons (my husbands sons) are put in the situation of their mother meets alot of men and has them stay with her off the internet. She does not know these men only what she has been told by them and she introduces the boys to them alot and they are left in their supervision alot while they are here. The Bowling Green, Kentucky really caught our eye because of Michal Patterson looks and talks just like the gentleman whom stayed for a week with them last fall. My family saw him at the ball field when she brought him to one of my stepsons games, and later that evening the Heart Association was having a dinner on our riverboat and my sister, my mother, my grandmother and my aunt all got to see him. Luckly when this aired the boys were at our house and saw this guy also. The oldest one being 11 started crying and stated he did not want to go home. The youngest stood there saying "oh, my gosh it is Jimmy." Both boys pictures, ages, names and town are listed on several of her web pages. Like My Space, which scares us because two young boys were abducted only about 2 hours from here off the web page. It made the news. The two from Kirkwood,MO. Is there any way you can help us? The last time we went to court this was brought up about her web page's and she stated someone stole her identity and pictures. Obviously the judge did't buy that because he told her that he did not want to hear of the boy's picture's on there again. But they are there. We have contacted DFS and law enforcement but in MO as long as they are not nudity than there is not much that can be done. We want our story heard we are wanting to get them out of this type of enviroment. Any suggestions? We do not have the internet in our home I have to come to my parents to even use the internet.

Regarding the MySpace web site, parents claim they cannot monitor their children 24hrs a day. However, a parent can establish their own MySpace web site and require their child to invite them in. This way a parent can periodically moniter what their child has posted and what others may be saying about their child.
Also, not to be defending the sexual predator, because I feel they are scums to prey on the young and INSECURE, but why isn't it possible to setup a reversal sting to catch the child? Monitor the situation, then report this to the child's parent to help put some ownership back into "parenting."

I'm, still, amazed how some people can talk bad about "To Catch a Predator". It's not Dateline ruining these people's lives, it's the predators, themselves.
When it comes to the "colatteral damage", only the predator can be blamed for that.
Those of us, who are normal, wouldn't be comfortable, being invited into a home by a minor alone, nevermind, walking, right, in, as if we live there.
It's, real, simple. If you don't want your name and your story aired on nationwide TV, arrested, jail or prison, classified as a sex offender and/or lose, all, parental control, of your children, watch who you talk to, online, and don't, even, think of meeting any minors, you don't know. Think about what it would be like, for you, if your child had an adult come over with you not home.
When Dateline, first, started the investigations they wondered if anybody would show up, at all, maybe, three or four, not eighteen or nineteen.
On top of that it's not, just, the number of the men who showed up, but, who they were.
There seems to be a lot of misconception, out there, about who some of the predators can be. Before "To Catch a Predator" got started, we all had the misconception, predators were nobodys, real losers, who live to have sex with minors, as if they wore a mask and a cape, like, you would see, in cartoons. that's not what Dateline found.
If you seen previous episodes you would know most of these people are in some serious positions of trust.
They could be your neighbor, your child's teacher, a co-worker, whatever.
Who has Dateline met? A news reporter, firefighter, rabbi, doctors, teachers, an actor, even, cops.
What does this say? How can a parent of teenagers, who wouldn't want their teens to let an adult into their homes, go out to meet somebody else's teen? While in the act their worst concerns, seem to be, their wives finding out.
For those, of you, who, still, think, Dateline is responsible for the collateral damage, look again. Some of the negative comments, even from other networks, sound, as if, Dateline pulled the trigger on the Texas prosecutor.
Sometimes, it seems, as if, some people do it for an opportunity to meet Chris Hansen. For those familiar, with the show, it's not, really, worth the risk.
Once again, having your name and face on TV isn't the only thing that can go wrong. Any foul move, as nentioned, above, can change your life, forever.
The point is there's no limit, who, a predator, can be, and Dateline's continuous coverage makes that point, perfectly, clear.

Reading through the comments and questions I found a very good question. What about the teens who feed into this? I, still, say, the adult men need to be responsible, for their actions, especially those who drive, six hours, to meet the unsupervised child.
Although there's nothing innocent about a grown man driving, a long distance, to meet a minor for sex, teens feed into it, sometimes, on a dare.
Teens, usually, have a false sense of invincibility and are, just, as much, responsible, as the adults, who are online, and, may be willing to meet them.
In the beginning, Chris Hansen stated that he asked a group of teens how many of them were "hit upon" by an adult, online. A show of hands revealed, all of them. When he asked them how many told their parents about it he saw no hands up and eyes staring at the floor.
Since the beginning, I have not heard, much else, about the teens' end of this issue.
It's, not, so much, about the innocent teens who don't want, such, advances, but the teens, who feed into it. they know what's going on, they know it's wrong and, unless they are feeling that, bogus, sense of invincibility, they, also, know it can be dangerous.
So far, the show has been about gaining control of the adults' end of the issue, which needs to be addressed from both sides.

After watching reruns of Long Beach, it amazes me, how dangerous, some of the predators can be. It was, also, a clevar approach, for that, one guy, to send in a, fifteen year old, accomplice.
I am guessing, Perverted Justice, a central source, seems to know the best places to set up. Because of the popularity of "To Catch a Predator," I am hoping, Perverted Justice, isn't as busy as they, may have been, two years ago.
Even though, Dateline, isn't showing new episodes, as often as they used to, a new one shows up, once, in a while, these days.
I'm hoping it's because Perverted Justice isn't as busy as they used to be, and, not because of the, bad, reviews, in Texas. I expect NBC to be firm about what they're doing.
I say, keep it going. Every predator Hansen meets is one, less, child, being harmed, by a predator.
Once again, only, the predator, who showed up, is responsible, for collateral damage. As, responsible adults, they initiated inappropriate conversations, with somebody, they believed, was less than sixteen, and, showed up, in person, to meet the child, with their biggest hopes, to be, that their wives, don't find out, without thinking about, what if, their children, were alone and, had an adult come over.
Could anyone, else, be responsible? Of course. How about the, real, teens, who are willing, to meet the adult, or the teens, who dare, other teens to do so?
What about the potential "hate crimes" that can be committed against potential predators?
Our constitution is about legal justice, not "jungle justice".
I'm sure, some of the "hate crimes," I've mentioned, before, have been committed, against, a few potential predators, 'don't know, how many, unreported.
It's something, else, to think about. As, some predators stated, they've met men, dressed, as women, but, that's not the worst that can happen.

First ,I want to commend you on your series and to your station for letting you do this.I am writting to you with respect to a case that was recently reported here locally.An elected official admitted to police he had had oral sex with a minor in a hotel room when a concerned citizen reported seeing him enter and that it seemed suspicious because the minor had appeared to be frightened.The boy was found hiding naked in the bathtub.the end result was there was not enough evidence to warrant further investigation or recommend charges.Of course this boy was frightened but the politics covered up the crime.Who fought for the minor ?contact me and I can give you more on the story.Political corruption runs rampid here and the level of participation in it is unbelievable.From misuse of public funds to intimidation of employees to....you name it it goes on here.

Profit from Sexual Abuse Victims ? I have had this nauseous feeling in the pit of my stomach for a while now over this program. I think I have finally found the source of this disgust. NBC sells the potential sexual exploitation of children for profit. There are a many things about this program that the average viewer may not have considered. The idea that I have to live in a world with child predators repulses me. As the father of a daughter that fell victim to a real predator , I was shocked at the feeling this series left me with. When I was told by my daughter that one of the shows featured someone we knew , I was horrified. The aftermath of that event brought to clarity what had been bothering me for so long.
NBC makes no attempt to offer assistance in any way to the lives of those this program has damaged. Taking a position that they are doing something about the problem by exposing potential predators and having no regard for the wreckage left in the wake of these peoples lives is unconscionable. This pious arrogance that the ‘potential predator’ created the havoc in the lives of anyone around them and therefore NBC isn’t obligated to anything is irresponsible. In these cases there is no real sexually abused victim left to focus on. Only the children, wives, parents, and other loved ones of these ‘potential predators’ are real victims. NBC cares so much about this issue there isn’t even a phone call to the families offering where they might get some help dealing with the trauma they are now forced to go through.
As my daughter has to watch the family members struggle to keep their lives together, NBC basks in the profits made by selling this tragedy with no regard for them at all. NBC had an opportunity with this series to really impact an issue and do it well. Profiteering and a lack of moral fiber in anyone involved with this show at NBC has victimized the innocent children and loved ones affected by this show.
I would love the opportunity to have my ten minutes of air time to talk about the only real victims this series has preyed upon. Where is there voice, suppressed by humiliation and guilt, maybe the feeling that they are responsible for what happened in some way, depression, anger, and abandonment? That’s what it feels like to be one of the many victims that a sex crime creates. Next time anyone who reads this watches the show, think of the crying mother, the wife in shock, the children’s lives turned upside down, and remember they are the only victims created here. Take note of the sponsors that pay for commercials because NBC pimps them off for nothing more than profit.

Thanks for doing this show. While I always felt it was interesting I never really noticed the true impact until someone I know was busted on the Bowling Green episode. He lived across the street from us and we occasionally saw each other after he moved. My husband and I thought he was a nice guy, shy, quiet..although we had talked before about how he seemed "off" but never put our fingers on it. I was absolutely shocked when I saw him on tv. This was someone who we talked to all the time, with our young daughter around. That is why this show is so important. You don't ever really know what a person does with their time, but I am so very glad I found out about this. He has since lost his job, which was a very good job with the city. I occasionally see him around town and just wonder how he feels, wondering if people will recognize that he was on To Catch a Predator. I sure hope so. That's what these people need. Some people go on about this being staged. If not staged by someone, then it's going to be someone's kid raped by these sick people.

Thank you for all you do for our communities and children. Even though I cannot stand the thought of these things happening, I have to watch the show. It draws out so many emotions in me that I get very upset at these men. I was molested as a child by 3 different people and it scares me to death that it could happen to my own children or other family members, let alone other children every where. These men are sick and don't need professional help, they need to be put at the mercy of the community in which they are preying on its children. As a mother of three, I am very protective of my children and even at 11, my oldest is not allowed on any website I do not sign to for them. What scares me the most is that you are only ONE agency protecting our children, but what about the men that actually get a hold of real children? There are way too many of them and I hope they all burn in HELL!! I could keep going, but it will just upset me more. I wanted to know, is there any way you could do an investigation in my area. I would do anything in the world to protect my children and all the shildren every where. Unfortunately, I understand you can't be eveywhere.

I would think, a, potential, predator, is, more likely, to get caught, than to, literally, sneak a quickie, from a minor, and, get away, with it.
Not, only, is Dateline, not, the, only, sting, on TV, but, they're not, the first, either.
Of course, many other crimes, can be commited, or, are being prevented, against teens, including, abduction and murder. I've, also, made, many other comments, about, potential, crimes, against, potential, predators.
Obviously, it's dangerous, from either side. Adults are, expected, to know, better, especially those, who drove, up to, six hours, for, such, activity. Even more, so, for the guys, who are married, and, have, their own, teenage children.
How can, these guys, not, relate to, if a, grown, man visited, their child, unsupervised.

This is the problem. what does a 12 year old see. sex in the mall sex in all ads and sex in maagazines and sex on TV. if a 12 year old is soliciting an older man in a chat room it is clearly not a problem for them to be consentually having sex with the older man if that is what they want. i personally do not feel i could ever have sex with a minor as it is not my thing however if a 12 yr old girl is actively online looking and what she wants she gets its noyt just the older mans responsibility. if a 12 yr old commits murder they may or may not be tried as an adult so if a human being wants to be sexual at any age why should it be a crime if on both sides is consentual?

Do you ever think it possible to hold interviews with the decoys and officers, possibly asking their raw opinion of these predators you catch. I think that it must be really demeaning for these men to be interviewed by female police officers as they realize the cute decoys are actually women with mature ideas of the disgust these men put forth. I know I would be completely abashed and embarrassed to be caught if I were like these 'little' men. Anyway, I would like to think that the interviews could discourage a small fraction of the first timers who are interested in soliciting a teen. People seem to think that having a computer gives them the abily to be compley safe from being caught and the abilty to use and abuse whomever they wish. And infect others with thier selfishness its about time someone took a stand with people and made thier peresness known you play with a child you run the chance of getting caught and in that Chris I watch your show on msnbc and even tonight i was watching the raw special of the unseen people you caught and what bothered me the most was that you caught a special ed teacher about all that man helps children whom are unable to help themselves and it made me sit and think the damage someone like that around children can do to children and that rabi it was a eyeopening experience. But in that Chris i had a question for you of something your show has made me think about. I am glad someone like you and Perverted Justice but all you guys have hit is aol and yahoo and it made me wonder Chris if it was a ooversight on your part or is it that and i realise this Chris that this is a serious problem and a large problem but why havent you guys gone after Myspace,Irc,Icq,bebo and google they also have this problem and i realise that your only one person and when i have watched your show it doesnt just seem your doing your job but because of the person you are it seems to me that you find it a responabilty to deal with human filth like this that is on the internet that uses and abuses child to suite thier own sick and selfish needs. It made me see that people like this breed others and in turn have rights to do as they please untill they finally get caught and even in that it takes a few times before they do something or become a dangerious person before they do something to them. And in that justice is slow however Chris your show has lasting effects you shine a spotlight on them for all to see in a way your like a amber alert in a visual form just like Perverted Justice posting thier logs with thier pictures its about time someone takes a stand its is long over dew. But in that Chris i wonder why you didnt look at all forms of chat because I was thinking that it makes a statement and puts them sick so and so's on notice that people are tired of thier ways on the internet wasnt made for thier sick fetishes especially that guy with the dog that was totaly wrong and the repete offenders. My stepdaughter had made her "myspace" while in her cousins home. I have to say that part of the problem with this is also in the hand of parents that are allowing young children to use the internet unsupervised. This show is getting old and if you watched the show's own review of what happened to the "predators," there has been an interesting trend: the sentences are much less harsh for more recent arrestees. Most likely this is because of the legal department at MSNBC finally realizing that what Hansen et.al. have been doing is assuming police powers. Also I think you're seeing more caution by local prosecutors and district attorneys as they also realize that a TV network has essentially usurped their powers of deciding who to "sting" and arrest. Would not be surprised if series disappears, or changes its format drastically to show the police initiating the sting. This is as it should be - since when do the media get to initiate sting operations, even if the local police "agreed" to the terms? Of course the MSNBC legal department has been careful to make sure the locals have signed off on a contract that grants MSNBC this power. It will be interesting to see how various court cases against MSNBC from "predators" and/or "victims" play out. In the meantime I think the show will have to waterdown if it is to continue. Unfortunately, when people are caught up in the emotions of the moment, politicians pass draconian (and unenforceable)laws and media ignore basic human rights guaranteed by the Constitution, e.g., rights to privacy, separation of powers, etc. It is not a matter of being against or for "sexual predators" or "child molesters." It is about following the laws as we are a nation of laws. (As an aside, kudos to Judy of AR for pointing out that beyond the legality/illegality issue, this type of "witchhunt" is probably immoral from a biblical standpoint, but I'll leave the moral arguments to others.) I think the courts will eventually see this kind of "journalism" for what it is - assuming powers that should be reserved to the criminal justice system - and force MSNBC to either change its approach or face legal consequences. Naturally, the bandwagon will continue to trumpet the cause as being noble, regardless of its legality/illegality. I expect the majority of commentators will hold fast to the usual argument of "well, even if it's an overstretch by the media, these people are so bad they deserve to be caught/punished no matter how its done" (i.e., the ends justify the means). Good thing that after more than two centuries the U.S. system of justice has ultimately (though slowly) rejected this argument - vigilantism is a romantic notion portrayed in old westerns. I suppose though it is human nature to want to act on camera, as various police departments have used as an excuse to pull guns on unarmed people (I don't think MSNBC has alleged that any of the "predators" were armed). Though I am no expert in the law, my common sense and observation tell me that it is illegal for police officers to pull weapons unless there is strong evidence of being physically endangered. Maybe I'm wrong on this. Needless to say,if I was one of the "predators," I'd find out if it was okay for officers (note plural) to pull guns on me coming out of a house unarmed and showing no signs of resistance (incidentally, I wonder what the police would have done with their weapons if a "predator" had run - shoot first, think later perhaps?) Well no doubt there will be more shows like this in the future since most people who watch them apparently aren't aware that we do have laws that we are supposed to follow to legally/properly investigate and arrest a person suspected of a crime - no matter how reprehensible we may think the crime is. I would applaud Mr. Hansen if he came on the air to admit how this whole thing is just another example of media unrestrained by either laws or ethics when they need to sell advertising time to make money, caring less about lives seriously damaged by convicting presumed-to-be-innocent people (somehow I don't think it's worth holding one's breath). By the way, does anyone remember Richard Jewell?

Chris, Awsome job. I am a minister and we did a outreach similar to this in California in the 90's but with a slightly different twist ... we addressed the issue of kids talking and giving out to much information over the web and in chatrooms, using the information they gave, we would track them down, we would then knock on the door and introduce ourselves and explain to the parents and the child why and how we were there. It was sort of a scared straight situation as our decoy carried a toy gun and plastic knife in to the home with them and laid it all out on the table after we entered the house, we had a Lady from our ministry who had at the age of 16 been raped by a man because she gave him to much information online and he had tracked her down using her online photo and the information she had given him (name of her school). we did it for about six months and caught about 20 - 25 kids. I would like to see you do something like this just once, what you do is better in that you are getting the sex offenders off the streets but it is just as important to educate parents and kids as to the dangers of giving to much information out in chatrooms, even if you are just chatting with your friends. We trcked one 16 year old girl down simply because she gave her town one night and was talking about one of her teacher a few nights later .... a few phone calls later we had the name of her school and we knew she walked home .... it was that simple. I think your program does much better in as that it catches the offenders and puts them behind bars. I have found it interesting though that some of these guys have stated that they don't have a gun/knife or weren't going to rape them. I wonder what they could be possibly thinking? I guess thats the problem ... they aren't thinking

This is a great show that has done much to bring information to the public about online sexual assault. However; the unfortunate thing about Perverted Justice, is that their organisation and their leaders are quickly becoming out of control and truly believe that they are themselves, law enforcement. What their website is not telling the general public, is that many of their methods are back firing on them, and making the problem worse. Peverted Jusiice is losing credibility among law enforcement, and if someone does not step in and take them down a notch, they are going to ruin the chances of putting the perverts in jail. I hope that NBC starts to look into the backround of those who run Peej, and begin a separation that in the long run, will put more pervs away. You bring a level of sophistication to the art of putting people on blast that I have not seen anywhere else. I watch hours of your show 'to catch a predator' to try and bring my game up to your level but without a proper master, like yourself, I can not seem to advance my skills anywhere near your level. Great Show. I would like to comment on something that many may not be aware of. Chat rooms via cell phones are just as dangerous. My teenage son got into a chat room called "fast flirt" and was texting with several men. Some even sent pictures. I reported it to the local sheriffs department but nothing was ever done about it. I think that all of the men that he was in contact with was out of state. I would like for "Dateline" to investigate these mobile chat rooms as well. Allowing kids unsupervised use of cell phones is just as dangerous as unsupervised use of the internet!

I'm so shocked that there are so many morally bankrupt people in America today that would consider having sex with a minor. And most shocking of all is that these men don't seem to see what they are doing as wrong. They only seem apologetic once they are caught, which is more an attempt at saving themselves than a real apology. It makes me wonder if morals are even taught throughout American families anymore. I know of a few families that do teach right from wrong, but beyond my own limited experience, I don't know.

I wonder if a nationwide moratorium needs to be held in order to teach people that it is wrong to have sex with young teenage girls and boys! I'm really upset that such a thing is needed in this day and age. If parents in America would just teach morals to their children before they are adults that would consider such sexually wrong actions, instead of leaving such teaching to schools and churches, perhaps our society wouldn't be in such dire straights today!

I wish I could more directly take action to see that morality (ie: wrong vs right thought and action) was taught on a national and community level instead of just ranting here on MSNBC. I honestly don't know what I as an individual can do beyond my own little sphere. Of course, I will do my utmost to teach my child and other children I encounter that it is wrong to have sex with adults (or with anyone until they are an adult themselves!) but what can be done to teach the adults that don't know any better now!

Like I said at the beginning of this post, I am just horribly shocked to find out how morally bankrupt people in this country have become! I'm so very glad Dateline is doing these stings to get such wrongly sexual deviants out of the populace, even if it is for a short while. Maybe a few of these men and women will learn from their wrong-doings and change their ways. I doubt it, but I can hope.

I am constantly amazed how the program "To Catch a Predator" constantly catches people doing the same thing over and over. It is very helpful in showing how dangerous internet chat rooms can be for any young person without supervision. However I am frustrated with the way the program and Perverted Justice presents itself. Personally I feel that PJ are just as sick as the people they "entrap" they are ego driven vigilantes. The “Perverted” in the name is certainly suitable. What do they do after the person is arrested, what is being done to help them aren’t they victims too? On the program the viewer only gets to hear the negative side of the people arrested. What about their backgrounds? It has been documented that a lot of perpetrators where once victims themselves. How about a follow up to the show to give updates on the predators, whether they are working on rehabilitating themselves or providing statistics on how many people are arrested each year due to this sickness. Dateline MSNBC & PJ also have a unique opportunity through the media and TV to send a message to potential predators about what can happen. BUT it has another opportunity that is ignored and that is to be responsible and provide information on how to get help both for the predator and for anyone who knows of one. Such as 12 step recovery programs for sexual addictions. I would even suggest funding some type of psychiatric or therapy groups. Predators or not these people caught and yet to be caught are certainly sick people, and if not treated properly may never understand why they do the things they do. Locking them up doesn’t resolve the problem. But treatment may help.

I applaud the work that is done by Chris Hansen and all involved. I find it to be very disturbing to see so many predators who seem to be so likable, well educated and even holding high ranking jobs. There should be task forces set up in every precinct, in every community. conducted just like your show. It is scary to think about how many sexual predators and rapist that are actually out there, who get away with their hanis acts.
My daughter was brutally raped. She will live with the daily reminder of her broken leg, that can not be repaired, not to mention the emotional scars that she will live with for the rest of her life. The rapist was her supervisor at work. The same week, he was able to just pack up and move to NY, where he will most likely reoffend. It is disheartening to find out that only 30% of rapists are ever convicted and mostly all continue to repeat their offenses. Because they can. It makes you feel like we live in a third world country, where women are not valued. When you are presented with having to go up against a criminal like this you find out the bitter reality that the criminal is more protected by the law, then the victim. The Texas investigation shouldn't prevent Dateline from continuing the predator investigations. Conradt shooting himself is his own fault. He's an exposed predator, just like everyone else. Over the years Dateline has prevented hundreds of real kids from being victimized. It's obviously a stupid idea for anybody to meet a minor who claims to be home alone regardless of the possibility of Dateline being there. Other things can go wrong. Not only did Dateline get more people than expected but most were a higher class of people than expected. The show needs to be updated. Just because To Catch a Predator hasn't been on TV lately doesn't mean predator traffic has slowed. It's still a real issue. I still say the more we know the better we can protect our kids.

I realize as a parent of three young boys how threatening our society has become to children and their every day well bieng. My two oldest sons are at risk of falling victim to the same things that every other child out there is at risk for. I feel a need to speak with my children tireslessy about the risks of talking on line to anyone who is not known by them as a close friend or family member. I feel a need to ask them questions while they are on line "who are you talking to?, where do you know him/her from?". I am snoopy because it is my responsibility as a parent. Even with all of the precautions a parent should be taking, we are now in a technological era where children no longer communicate with one another by person to person conversation or on the phone but rather, on the internet, on their video game system or on their cell phone. Heres my question...with all of this new technology so readily available to children, why is it that parents seem to have become more complacent? Allowing a child to be satiated with the newest fandangled cell phone, a computer in their bedrooms away from common living areas where activity can be more closely monitored? And why is it that we now see young girls of only 13-15 half naked walking down the streets with their undergarments hanging out of their low rise jeans and belly baring shirts leaving very little to the imagination? Whatever happened to being young, innocent and self respecting? And what happened to the parents who should be instilling this in their young children? Soft porn is now available on cable at 10 o'clock at night when our pre-teens/teens are still up. Could it be that things have been made so readily available to young children even before they are ready to be responsible. And have we as a whole made it available? It is cojointly the responsibility first in our homes as parents to provide the tools our children need to make the right decisions and learn from the wrong ones without detrimental effect to our children and second,it is every other person's responsibilty in our society including those that make up our broadcasting industry, marketing firms,educational systems ect to do the same....so why don't they. Instead, they provide more of a challenge to parents today than I ever recall there bieng in my youth.

As many years as the show aired I think it would be more difficult for a predator to claim entrapment since the show is so popular and people are now aware if they mess with a minor online they could be featured in an upcoming To Catch a Predator investigation. It's definitely a problem not going away soon. Despite the negative reviews from other networks Dateline drives home the fact this could be a dangerous situation for children. Along with other investigations this show still needs to be updated every now and then to show the public this is still happening, to show new examples of what's still out there. Other than computer predators I think Dateline should cover as many issues regarding child safety as possible, anything and everything possible to teach the public how to keep our kids safe from all of the latest issues that could possibly develop in our Children's lives, for the true coverage, not the ratings as other networks insist.

They say it's difficult to get a fair trial if you walk into a hidden camera investigation. If you want a fair trial don't try to meet a minor for sex in the first place. The cameras aren't entrapment. they're evidence. I have yet to see Dateline to cover what could possibly happen to a predator if a sting is run by other than law enforcement, Dateline or other news media. It would be too easy for a gang of thugs to bag predators on their own, especially since child predators are so unpopular with other types of criminals. Anybody who might be thinking about setting up a meeting with somebody underage should get help immediately. There's too much to lose if anybody finds out the hard way.

I LOVE "To Catch a Predator!" I was just wondering when will the next installment air(if ever) and if Dateline NBC would do a special in areas known for having children. I can only imagine how these men hover around carnivals, theme parks, family resorts, elementary schools, etc. They may even go as far as to live around or work at such places. Those are the locations where parents feel free and safe to leave children to themselves or with others their age. It seems like the and most fun and safe of areas, but they can be dangerous if taken lightly. Also, I'm a big fan of Chris Hansen. The way he executes each "interview" is brilliant. Not to down other shows, but it seems as if these Steve Wilkos type shows dont get to people. All of that screaming at a person shows no intellegence. Mr.Hansen uses a technique that allows those men to sit and reflect on what they really are doing and who it will effect. That is one of the reasons why I plan on changing my major to Communication this fall, because of great journalist and correspondents like Mr. Hansen. To all involved in these projects and all Dateline Stories: Keep up the great work!

My wife and I just finished watching you expose more of these creepy men hoping to engage in unthinkable activities with a 13 year old. I appreciate you getting some of these wackos off the street. However, I find the questions asked by you too easy. They give a brief explanation of why they are there and then they get busted. At this "deer in the headlights" moment for the purp, there is a brief moment of remorse and raw truth that you can get vital information. I think you need to ask about their ography addiction. How long they have been viewing it. If they see any correlation between ography and where they are today. I GUARANTEE 100% of these people view ography and have an addiction to it. Scientific research has proven that the Serotonin is released and creates a pathological addiction more powerful then . ography I believe is at the root of this problem. If my theory is true, why do we not spend more time fighting this legal yet devastating activity? Is it because everybody does it? I can say with all honesty that I do not view it based on my religious beliefs but I know it is the cause to broken marriages, infidelity and ultimately if you take it to far, child . You have a voice, do something to stop it. I could go on for hours on the affects of ography but you don't have the space for me to go on. First off,in response to the above comment questioning the reason of a 13 or 14 year old, that is rediculous. Yes, I agree that no teenager is going to have the desire to engage in any lewd activity with an older guy, but you have to stop and think how is the mentality of a "bugged eye" old man, or a mid 30's father of 2, if he proceeds and agrees to engage in these activities? That is the real question. There is no defense for having online or verbally sexually explicit conversations with a 12,13, or 14 year old, then agreeing to meet with them. Point is, if he shows up after having said conversation, then he's guilty. Regardless if the minor was the one to initiate the conversaion. It's wrong and disgusting. I saw the episode that took place in Riverside, Ca. When I read the follow up stories at the end of the show, I was truly pissed off that sentences of 5 years in prison, 1 year in prison with a 5 year probation. In my opinion, it makes absolutely no sense to have a predator have that light of a sentence.

I am an avid watcher of your show and I applaud you for exposing these men and their sickness. I must ask you this though Mr. Hansen, is your work helping to deter these men from their actions or is it something that should be treated in another way since it is evidently a sickness?
It's one thing to identify the crime but obviously locking these men up does nothing to aid them in overcoming these desires. They do the time and come out with the same way. I am a psychology student and I understand that these men need to be kept away from kids but don't exploit them and make them appear to be consciously perusing to mess up a kid's life. These people are out of control. It's like a kleptomaniac. Telling them it's wrong to steal does not register in their minds because they're SICK. The same applies to these men.
I hope that soon I see your show take a different approach to really help these people. Maybe a show depicting that these people could get help, would lead to more of them coming out and admitting that they have this sickness and pursuing treatment because embarrassing them is obviously not working.

I am so satisfied of that types of guys are caught. They are the types of persons that we find to diaries and to which we have to entrust our most presious valued. some kids are not prepared and is not always because of lack of informations or advice also because they believe anything that sound good. Since it has been said before, they do not have control on this decicion and every adult who wants to snatch the infancy deserves many more I felt sorry for some of them, but having remembered for what reason they were there since the beginning, i felt very well with the outcome !!!!
