My ex and I were literally at each other's throats during our split up,(he is bipolar). But thank God we both came to the point where we had to decide if we loved our children MORE than we hated each other. Luckily for everyone involved the answer for us both was, yes. Our children were defintely more important than our desire to destroy each other. After faking politeness for so many years we are now better friends than we ever were during our marriage. How I wish more people could come to this conclusion. In our case no one got murdered, no one went to prison, and our kids stayed out of foster care and have both their parents.A happy ending to a horrible marriage IS possible.

i knew Sean and Joy both. Joy was a wonderful young woman, who was vibrant and full of life. Sean was an intelligent and charismatic leader. I worked very closely with them both for almost 2 years. I was also very close personal friends of both of them, especially Joy. What Sean did borders on the unforgivable, using his twisted interpretation of scripture as justification for his sexual appetite. Sean was, and may still be, a predator. Joy was a teenager (19) in the youth group that Sean pastored when they first met, and he used his spiritual influence to deceive her. I had many conversations with her as to how confused she was and how torn she was about her relationship with him (they were secretly polygamist, it was not open or forthright and their relationship was masked as friendship/brotherly .) Sean used whatever manipulations available to get what he wanted. Not only was Joy a victim, but also Sean's first wife has suffered through this (who had also been a member of his youth group in Oklahoma). The pattern was established long before Joy. Ultimately, Sean was an arrogant man who would not allow himself any accountability, and left to his own device became increasingly controlling and violent. I hope justice is served, and Joy's life, and children find resolution and closure.

I never cease to be amazed why ministers who preach the Gospel of Christ and take their messages from the Bible seems to have missed or chose to overlook the scriptures that doesn't appeal to them in order to do what they want to do. In Ephesians 5:22-25 it tells wives to submit to your own husband as to the Lord..for the husband is head of the wife as Christ is head of the church and he is the savior of the body..Therefore just as the Church is subject to Christ So let the Wives be to their own husbands in everything...HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES JUST AS CHRIST ALSO LOVED THE CHURCH AND GAVE HIMSELF FOR HER.
Verse 28 says Husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. No one ever hated his own flesh but nourishes and cherishes it just as the Lord does his Church.
I have quoted these scriptures to show what is expected of the wife BUT so many wives cannot be in subjection to their HUSBANDS due to the abuse put on them by their husbands. A Husband and Wife become one flesh when they are married. This man would not cut up himself as he did his wife. So just how could he ever justify by the scriptures doing what he did not to mention the Adultry he was involved in with another woman. That is another issue he will have to stand before God and be accountable for. lst Timothy 3:2 says to be the HUSBAND of ONE Wife.
God will judge this man so the bottom line he may try to fool everyone but himself but it is himself he can't fool.

I am quite sad to see how many people view Christ

As I watched Joy's story tonight I could feel nothing but anger and remorse for her. I am so glad to see true believers in Christ stand up for what followers of Christ really believe. The comment about the Christian conservatives is quiet true, they are intolerant of anything and everything. The Word tells us not to judge, unless you want to be judged. (I'm not good at quoting scripture). The bottom line is, God is in control, however man has been given free will and will and can do some really horrific things. The really unfortunate part is that they will do it in the name of God.

Goff, has done something legally and morally wrong and is being punished accordingly. However, it should be noted that for those of us who do believe that Jesus was The Christ, believe that He was crucified so that we can be forgiven for our sins. I know that for some this is difficult to believe...but if Goff truly repents for his sins (not trying to B.S. God (ok that might be sacralige)) then yes he can be forgiven. In addition if he has accepted Christ as his personal saviour, there is even a seat in heaven for him.

For those of you who struggle with this concept, just remember that God is capable of things that go far beyond our ability to conceive. He can do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we can imagine.

There is power in prayer, so lets keep praying that man will chose to change their evil ways.

I knew Joy, Sean and Sheila. I worked with them in the mid - late 90's. I found out about the murder a couple of years ago when someone from San Diego forwarded a news article to me. I want to emphasize that everything that's been said about what a wonderful, beautiful, caring, vibrant person Joy was is absolutely 100% true. She was a great friend and a loving mom. I know it must be hard to believe for the people watching this story, but Sean was a very charming, friendly and well-liked person. Just goes to show you how deceiving the devil can be. For the people who wonder why the people in Joy and Sheila's lives didn't try to get involved to help them...you are wrong. Many people tried to help them (after the truth came to light -- they tried to keep it a secret for more than a year). People offered to allow them and their children into their homes; they were offered financial support, moral support, spiritual support, etc. You have to remember that both ladies were teenagers in Sean's youth group (at different churches in different states) when they met him. From conversations I had with them, I believe they both became involved with him while they were still minors. He was able to manipluate them into his way of thinking. Sheils seemed like she went emotionally numb after a while.

I was friends with Joy, Sean, and Sheila (and their boys) for years. After breaking contact with them 4 yrs ago, I can only say I was horrified, shocked and disgusted to watch Dateline last night and learn of Joy's murder, it was the first I ever heard of her death. Being such close friends of theirs for years, and knowing first hand what a wonderful, kind, fun,good spirited woman & mother Joy was, I am sick over this, I can't wrap my mind around the fact that she's gone. Sean, a very intelligent and charming man, had to always be in control over every aspect of their lives and every decision was made by him and him alone. I know from conversations with Sheila (the first wife) that when they first got married years ago Sean did not tell her of his belief/desire of polygamy. Little by little over the years of their marriage, Sean convinced Sheila that God's plan for them was to be a polygamist family and bring a second wife into their lives. He often pointed out, or should I say twisted, passages in the Bible to prove to her and others that polygamy wasn't a sin. You have to remember, as Jason from San Diego pointed out, he was a youth minister, very convincing and charming, the type of man who was so intelligent and well versed in the Bible and so many subjects, he could get them to believe almost anything, and did. He met and married both women when they were very young and vulnerable to his manipulations. After conversations with Sean overtime, it was obvious he was using his take on religion and the woman's devotion to God, as a way to get everything he wanted...using his "belief" as the excuse for controling and ruling over the women because he said it was how "God intended husbands to be", to keep the door open to adding more wives so he could have sex with more than one woman, and so on. Sadly neither wife saw through his deception, until it was too late. Joy was a strong willed woman not afraid to voice her opinions to Sean. In the years I knew them I witnessed numerous fights between Sean and Joy. Each fight would ignite because Joy refused to always be subservient to Sean and always be told what to do and how to live her life, she would question him. To Sean this was an act of defiance by his wife and not acceptable, the women were not allowed to question his "authority". After watching the story last night, hearing the testimony, and just seeing his lying face, it's obvious to me that Joy was trying to leave, trying to get her and her 2 boys free of Sean and the twisted relationship. That after all these years she finally realized the truth behind his lies and found the strength to want out. But being the controling, manipulating, cold blooded man Sean Goff is, he would not allow this, and killed her. He's always twisted his religion/beliefs to suit his life and justify his actions. Now he's convinced himself that what happened had to be done, as if it was part of God's plan for him and God has forgiven him. It makes me sick to know he can sleep at night after the brutal way he killed Joy, and what this has done to her children. I hope he rots in jail the rest of his life.

I was raised as a stong christian all of my life. I had a strong christian life, I also worked very stong with the church. In a christian college, I became very educated about some of the practices of the church. It is very sad, but alot of it ultimately comes down to control. The people who are preying on 19 year old girls, counseling them without educational training, marring them and having kids with them while they are still married and killing them, mutilating their bodies, sending email to themselves and others as her and never telling where the body is. That is a monster. But what about those who were supporting him? The church who employed him. They are still out there, in and out of church, the evil of the ones in the church is that they are cleverly hidden under the fakeness that is required to "live a good life" those who have to supress what is "real", how they truly are or are most susceptible to this kind of ending. I knew both Sean and Joy for about two years. I worked with both of them at a local ministry. It's so easy to speculate...so easy to judge. Since I saw the episode on Dateline last night, this is now the second night it's hard for me to get to sleep. It's 4 a.m. and I'm troubled even much more because I knew them...and by the fact that it is SUCH a strange contradiction that Sean was definitely the most incredibly powerful preacher we had ever heard preach the Word of God. He was the Pastor of the ministry we worked at for a while. We marveled at that when he finally sent a memo to the ministry to confess aout the polygamy. You know what I mean? Just the contradiction of it - how could it be so?? After that, I called Joy and left a message for her to call me if she ever needed me. We (my friend & I) never heard from her again. Trying again to post my message...I feel it important to say that I agree with Susan. I was a friend of Sean's. Everytime we talked he would scurry off the phone or the computer because "Joy was coming!". He was scared out of his mind. He would call later to apologize for the abrupt hanging up. It was pretty obvious what was going on but after months of being Sean's friens he would not admit anything until one day, he just curled up in a ball and admitted everything, except the polygamy. We worked in the same industry and shared religion talk and all that. He would tell me how jealous she was and how he could not even go to the local Starbucks without her coming to hunt him down to cause a scene with the cashier for even thinking about looking at him. Sean was a good looking man. He was a very endearing man with a lot of problems. He cried all the time. He said he wanted to be honest about what was going on but he didnt want to get me involved. We talked about divorce in length. I was divorced and he said he could not divorce Joy because of his religious beliefs, since she had not cheated it was not biblically allowed. He said that she kept threatening to tell the world about him so he would lose all 3 of his children. I remember one day him just crying practically all night, saying he had screwed up his whole life. He had a wonderful wife (Sheila) and he took advantage of her love and generous nature. That he should have never married Joy, that it was a mistake. That all she did was cause problems. He said he wished he could go back to the days of preaching. That he had to give up his "church and preaching" to marry Joy. It all makes sense now. I feel bad for the people that think Sean was truly a monster. I feel like he really truly got lost. The person I knew was not this unfeeling person everyone talks about. He tried to hold it together. He always asked for prayer for himself and his family. He really loved his boys, believe it or not. All 3 of them. I think in all of this, its the boys who will suffer. I pray for Sheila, the boys, Joy's father and his family all the time. It's a sad situation that could have been avoided somehow someway, how I don't think anyone will ever know how. Blame is easy to place on Sean, but it's not our place to judge. Please know I do not condone what Sean did. I wish if it was self defense or an accident that he would have played it out differently instead of trying to hide it. It really is amzing though what money buys. There was a man here in Texas, that killed his neighbor, did similar what Sean did with the body and he got off. Amazing really...anyway I hope one day after all this has settled that the boys grow up ok.

i have been reading american crimes on nbc dateline and have found the most heart rending stories. my heart goes out to all the families of the victims and wish them peace. this man was cruel beyond contemplation and surely with that much evidence he should have been hung drawn and quartered!!!

religion should not come into the equation he is a man who is unable to admit fully to himself and others what he has done. it sounds to me like he still blamed joy when she is no longer here to defend herself. i believe there is no forgiveness if there is a next world. i hope i shall never meet anyone from my past that hurt me as i hope all the other victims will never have to face their killers who prematurely ended their precious lives. joy was beautiful to look at as are everyone of societies victims. his first wife had niggling doubts why did she not report what she suspected??? we should all treat others as we would like to be treated. what a happier life we would all live. i am not religious but i do feel that everyone should respect other peoples feelings and he did not. it is not fair for society to judge a group of people who have the same interests because one black sheep has committed a horrendous crime. good luck to everyone in the world i hope everyone has peace and can share a little bit of good with each other.

this is NOT about this story but another, I would like to inform Keith Morrison or Chris Hansen to look into: Here in Greeley,CO. we had a married sheriff's officer have a baby with cashier at a savings&loan, then this officer's wife had an affair with the procescuiting attorney, then the officers wife shot and killed the cashier(mom to husbands baby) then the officer(husband of wife that shot, supposedly) met her and hid her weapon (gun) he left for WA state, was brought back here to Greeley.Now cashiers real husband,is raising the child of the shoter's husband!

I, too, worked with Joy and Sean (1997-1998). I considered them both friends. At the time, they were telling all of us that Joy was just Sean and Sheila's roommate. None of us had any idea that Joy was actually his second wife. In 2003, I had just re-connected with Joy. I had been in touch with Sean and Joy several times via e-mail. Then, Joy suddenly stopped writing me, and I wondered why. It was a year before I happened across the news story of her murder.

If I had to guess, I would think that there had been an altercation between them, which ended in her death, and that it was a crime of passion, and not pre-meditated. I don't necessarily believe the story the way Sean told it because it seems there are unanswered questions, such as if he supposedly stabbed her once or twice and then tried to give her CPR, why did her autopsy report show 12 stab wounds? Anyway, all that to say I don't know what happened that night, only Sean and God know for sure, but I have a hard time assuming that the crime was pre-meditated.

Dear Keith Morrison/Dateline Correspondent

Why should a person not get the justice that he is looking for after 25 years because of an unfair and unjust plea bargain. I represented myself pro se right to the United States Supreme Court and because of the prosecutor who is now a judge I am not getting the justice that I am trying to seek. I have mailed you a certified letter dated January 06, 2008 and I have not received the green card back saying that you received my letter. My opinion about Goff is that the things that he did were horrifying and disgusting and it is a shame that people that have not murdered, raped, or did these horrifying things should be put in a classification that have the potentential according to the law to be classified in this catergory but at a much lower scale. This does not mean anything because when people see that you were classified as a sex offender they look at you as if you are a psychopath and have the potential to do the same things he did even though your crime wasn't as gruesome as these other horrific crimes but yet you are still in that same category especially when people don't know how you were convicted and what the truth is behind all this. Why is it that when you are tyring to get justice that the United States Suprem Court denies your petition for a post-conviction relief? Is it fair to say because the prosecutor that prosecuted the case is now a judge and has been a judge for many years and I believe that's why justice is not being granted. Please answer the letter that I have mailed to you.
