I hope NBC seriously reconsiders this decision. Dateline has been my #1 favortie tv show over the past 15 years and Stone is one of the main reasons why. He's voice, professionalism, grace, personality and warmth that he brought to each and every broadcast are why I tuned in each and every time. Stone is the face of Dateline. If this descision is not reconsidered by NBC, I may no longer watch Dateline. I feel like I'm saying goodbye to a close and personal friend that I have welcomed into my home for the past 15 years. Every time I see Stone Phillips hosting Dateline, I see integrity and work ethic in action. I am so saddened that Mr. Phillips will no longer be hosting "Dateline". I do not know why NBC would let a correspondent of Stone Phillips character be let go. I find Stone to be an honest anchor, with talent that surpasses anyone in broadcast journalism now. NBC says it wants more versitile anchor's well, get rid of Vieria on the "Today Show!" She is awfull and is on the "D" list of news anchors. Back to Stone, please keep him on Dateline, he has been on for 15 years!!! If not Dateline, give him another post at NBC. I am shocked to read the headlines today that Stone Phillips is leaving. I sure hope Dateline finds extra money somewhere to cancel the termination of their contract and keep Stone Phillips on Dateline. I love watching that show, and one of the reasons I love the show so much is the way Stone Phillips presents the stories. He's great to look at, he has a wonderful voice to listen to, he speaks clearly and intelligently, and I just absolutely love the way he reports the Dateline segments. He's dashing, polished, sophisticated, appears to be quite the gentleman, and well-dressed (and all those are definite pluses compared to the majority of men in the US). I truly look forward to the show mostly because he's hosting it. Please, please, please do everything in your power to keep him on.

Stone will leave a huge void at NBC and NBC would be wise to keep his presence alive via replay. Some of Stone's past quirky stores still reverberate vividly in my mind and I would love to see them replayed in tribute. I especially remember the one where an over-crowed ferry sunk in Asia and the passengers has to stay afloat for days with no land in sight until they were rescued. The recreation showed how an ingenious American college student used her jeans as flotation devise. It was astonishing to watch. Also the story about the nuns that needed money and started selling prayers for donations – those that purchased their prayers told how their lives changed positively as a result. I hope Stone turns up on PBS or another station that values truth and integrity.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of NBC's poor judgement in the firing of Stone Phillips. First, they "dummy-down" The Today Show, which has me flipping channels more in the am, then I hear that my favorite show is losing my favorite reporter. I'm still in shock. I will say what many others have said before me. Stone Phillips IS Dateline. I felt like he was part of my family. I can't imagine Dateline without him. His professionalism, stands out; not to mention his charisma, tallent and concise information. I for one and I know for a fact that I am not alone in this, will not be watching Dateline anymore. Stone you did a tremendous job. A true gentleman whit a voice that put all at ease no matter what the story. When you listened to Stone it you got the facts and the truth that are so hard to fine in anyone these days. NBC you made a BIG BOO BOO. I would just like to know who in the world do you think can replace him or come close to him. I was a big NBC fan but as you know things change "get my drift". I will no longer watch Dateline or NBC. I hope that Mr. Phillip's departure from NBC is not indicative of his departure from broadcasting and public life. I must have been in a cave in Siberia for the last few weeks. I watched Dateline tonight (July 2nd) and heard Stone say his time was over and I literally started crying and screamed "NO NO NO, Stone. Now say you're going on vacation or something". Then I came here and read all of the above comments.....and I agree with them all....NBC stands to lose viewers from around the world!!!

Stone is part of the dying breed in American Journalism in the tradition of Cronkite, Brakaw. Americans need an anchor that they can trust and like and whose voices are clear and plesant to hear and who represent the values that Americans aspire. No one is going to turn to Stewart or Colbert if there's a castatrophe. The news and news programs need to be anchored by people that are respected. I was surprise when I was watching Dateline last time and I learned it was his last program. I frantically started trying to find out why he was leaving and were. I did not find out the reason or where he was going so I imagine is a private and confidential matter and I respect that. I have loved Stone Phillips from day one and I always look forward to see Dateline even I am not too crazzy about watching TV. Dateline is a great program but Stone Phillips was the "star".I think he is the best. I love his voice, his personality and his method of conducting interviews. I will miss him in Dateline. Boy what a surprise, I was just looking up what's new on Dateline and read about Stone being let go???? I am so sorry to hear that. I think some people felt threatened about the exposures of child preditors, with the series that were done on Dateline. Maybe some of the officials felt they could be next in being "caught"
I think that is what's wrong with our society, we cover up and hide the sins of the rich and the poor people land in prison for the same crimes.
We have people like Rupert Murdoch, running all of the media in the USA (the big majority) and other countries, he has his own agenda and it is not broadcasting the "NEWS" but rather the "spin" like we hear on Fox News.
First we lost CBS anchor Dan Rather, and now Stone Phillips? Very sad indeed!

It is unbelievable to think that a national network would not renew the contract of Stone Phillips, a person who has built a stellar legacy in news broadcasting. I will not watch Dateline in the future because Stone was the reason I tuned in for so long. (Sorry, Ann Curry.)

To think a network would pitch someone of Stone's calibre just to save money -- he supposedly earned $5M -- seems oxymoron-ish to me. It slashed millions from its budget when Meredith Viera took Katie Curic's spot on the Today Show. Wasn't that enough?

Regardless, Stone, I wish you every success in your next endeavor. If nothing else, you can write a memoir and I will miss you as I watch CNN. (Sigh.) But, my smile will shine like a beacon when I find where you've gone, should you return to television.

Stone Phillips made Dateline. I will no longer be a viewer of this program. Ann Curry is I am sure a sweet lady but she is far to flighty to anchor a serious news program. NBC, are you crazy??? We don't watch news programs to see a fashionista behind the desk. We want to see someone we can trust. You've lost a lot lately-John Segenthaler (excuse me for spelling it wrong John), Campbell Brown and now Stone Phillips. Who's next? Brian Williams and Matt Laurer?? Are they too expensive too?? Why couldn't Stone be the back up to Brian Williams? Instead your trying to burn out Lester Holt by making him do the Today show and NBC Nightly News Weekend. Everytime I see dateline without Stone Phillips, I realize what a void there is in the programming...and of all things...every story is covered by a female. All of them are lovely, but they cannot compare to Mr. Phillips and while watching, it is apparant how much his solidness is missed. A really stand-up individual and there are not that many out there that do the job that Stone did. I've read everything I can about his leaving, but there is obviously a gag order because no one is talking...everything I read shows that all his fans are also very upset with NBC.
Bad, Bad decision. For him...when one door closes another will open and his future will brighten the network that recognizes real quality in this human being.

When I watched the last Dateline series he did some months back and he told the viewers it would be his last, I had to rewind it and play it again because I couldn't believe it. Since Stone Phillips left, there's been nothing of any substance to Dateline. Now it is nothing but Tabloid TV marketed as a "News Magazine"! What a waste! Wonder if the last RECENT episode I happened to catch with Stone Phillips reporting was a repeat or just a suck-up re-hire on the part of Dateline to get ratings back upon losing them after firing Stone Phillips. Sorry Dateline but you lost me a long time ago when you fired Stone. If he went back to you, I feel sorry for HIM. He deserves better than you! You didn't want to continue to pay him in the first place and if now you've lost so many viewers that you've decided you made a mistke and want to re-hire him, you've lost too many viewers to handle your poor decision!

Dear Stone,
My heart aches as I plead with you for some kind of help with a situation that I share with you first hand. This has been my life’s situation for the past twelve years.
How I wish that you, or someone, would do a story about the pain, the suffering, the silent agony that is endured by the spouses and family members of a person with Bipolar Disorder.
This is a mental illness that is so complex that the average person (who doesn’t live with a Bipolar person) has no comprehension of the devastation known by the caretakers of the Bipolar person.
Bipolar’s are not retarded; nor are they stupid people; they are quite intelligent, and therefore they are able to carry on jobs in many fields with great efficiency. Even though they’re able to have relationships at their workplaces people realize something is different about them yet they don’t quite understand what it is.
The Bipolar person uses up all their energy while out in the public eye to try to act like a normal person just so they will be accepted. They have a horrible fear of not measuring up with others. When they get home and away from the public eye they don’t pretend any more and hurl all kinds of frustrations and hatefulness at their spouse; and if someone out there has made them angry the spouse has all the anger dumped on them.
The Bipolar is not a social person. They are more of a recluse, so they want to stay at home, or be alone with their caretaker - who catches the brunt of all of their hostility.

Much of the time in the public eye they will put on a show and be the ‘funny’ person and everyone laughs and thinks they’re so cute. This way they can feel acceptance - they don’t believe they can act ‘normal’ and be accepted. They realize something is horribly wrong with them because they see other people enjoying common everyday things that they don’t enjoy - so they shy away from people to hide the fact that they are different.
The caretaker (spouse, parent, etc.) has proven their love by sticking with the Bipolar and the Bipolar feels safe with that one person. They want the caretaker to spend all their time with them exclusively! They feel threatened if the caretaker has friends or other family members they want to spend time with- and the ‘Bipolar’ will go to great lengths to harm the caretakers relationships with anyone else.

My children’s dad and I divorced when our son was six and our daughter was twelve. I raised the children alone. After they grew up and moved out of my home, I was quite lonely. I am a Christian and had sincerely prayed for a Christian mate. I attended a church with about 425 members. In my Sunday school class was a very handsome man (Curt) who was alone - and a Christian. We saw one another only at church. Curt’s wife had left him two years prior to our meeting. She had been having a lengthy affair and left Curt for the other man. After a year of attending church together Curt and I began dating (with our Pastor’s full blessing). I think the Pastor saw stability in me that he knew would be good for Curt.

During the years of raising my children, I bought a home, a car, worked at a major university in a responsible position. I had been in a leadership position in my former church. Curt seemed to enjoy his time with me but was depressed a lot. He explained his depression by telling me it was because he lost his family. That seemed reasonable; after all it had only been two years ago since it happened, so I didn’t question it further.
He wanted to be with me more and more (which I needed because I was alone and lonely. I believed this was the Christian man I had been praying for.

After dating eight months, we were married. I felt loved by him because he called me his angel sent from God to rescue him. Our life together has been one roller coaster ride!
Neither of us knew at the time of our marriage that he had Bipolar Disorder - actually I had never heard of the illness. I had only heard of manic depression but didn’t understand what it was. The years following our marriage have been spent with me getting a full and painful education of what the illness is all about.
I have loved him so deeply - but this wonderful love is turning to anger and hatred because he is sucking the life right out of me and “literally” killing me day by day! The extreme trauma of dealing with his relentless illness is causing me to develop health problems that are life threatening. My body is so tense all the time that I’ve developed high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, headaches, back aches, shingles, and arthritis in my neck.
He is so needy for my undivided attention that I rarely get to spend time with anyone else but him - and when I do, I pay a hefty price for it.
He nags and whines and complains and finds fault in every thing I do.
I entered our relationship a poised and confident woman with a healthy self esteem. He has criticized and beaten me down with hateful words and criticism, along with false accusations until I struggle now to believe I’m even half worth being loved at all. Loving a woman is something (even he admits) not even having a remote idea how to do.

He tries to make me believe that I cannot do anything right. Worse than that, he insults me around other people and wants them to believe I can’t do anything right. His self esteem is zero, so therefore he tears me down so he can feel better about himself.

He makes foolish financial decisions that loses money we can’t afford to lose. He struggles with even small decisions like what shirt to wear. He constantly wants to die, and talks about suicide. If something he’s working on doesn’t go as he planned he blames me for it. Even when he’s pretending to jest, that too is very sarcastic and hateful, and truly intended to hurt me.

He has a volatile temper and goes off like a bomb whenever he feels like it and curses me and screams and points his finger in my face and yells for me to go to hell!
I have to tiptoe on eggshells in order to keep him in a good mood so he won’t lose his temper.
When I take a phone call he stands there asking “who is it?” “What do they want?” - and he listens to what I’m saying and criticizes me for whatever I say to the person.

Every time we are discussing something and he feels he’s losing in the discussion he will threaten to divorce me and will say things like: ‘I need to find me somebody else that will put me first’, ‘I don’t need you, I can make it on my own’, ‘I made it without you before I married you and I can make it by myself just fine’.
He exhibits multiple personalities, and changes from one to another without cause or warning. He displays characteristics of ADD, and if I am talking he hears only part of what I say - and frequently asks me ‘WHAT?, or HUH? Yet, if I am in another room talking on the phone he hears every word I say to the other person - because he’s listening. He doesn’t have a hearing problem, he has a listening problem.
He’s extremely suspicious and accuses me of having hidden motives against him. He believes that everyone is out to “get him” to make him feel foolish.
When he comes into a group of people (like at church or family gatherings) and everyone doesn’t run to him and shake his hand, they are rejecting him (in his mind).

Recently I went out of town to care for my sister and her husband after their surgeries, and he searched every drawer and closet of mine. He told me he was looking for ‘listening devices’.
His paranoia causes him to believe that restaurant food will make him sick or kill him, therefore, he won’t take me out - and wants ‘home cooking’ with me doing all of his meals. The only way I get to go out for a meal is to go by myself.

He tells me that the Bible says I’m to be totally submissive to him. He describes submission as me giving him his way no matter how selfish he wants to be (and believe me, he is plenty selfish!)
He has no regard for the fact that I am a human being with feelings or needs of my own. He criticizes every feeling I’ve tried to express to him and I hear his sermon about how stupid I am to feel the way I do!
He doesn’t have friends because he won’t let himself be close enough to anyone - because he’s afraid they will realize he has a serious problem, and he wants to keep his illness a secret. In fact, when his illness comes out, he vigorously denies that he has Bipolar, and he tells people ‘it’s all Helen’s idea that I have Bipolar’.
Yet he was diagnosed by a Psychiatrist at a huge Behavioral Hospital and treated for three years with Lithium (until he/himself decided to go off his medicine).

I feel so isolated because I can’t share with many people what it’s like living in the prison I find myself in. Most people don’t have a clue what Bipolar is and even when I try to share with them what it’s like being the caretaker of such a person, they don’t understand the magnitude of devastating I’ve experienced.

He puts on such a convincing ‘cutesy’ show in front of people when they are around, and then when they are gone he goes back to the mean monster he is to me when I’m alone. He is killing me; and yet I see just enough good in this man to keep on trying to help him. I realize though, I don’t possess the help he needs.

The few friends and family that I do talk with about it don’t fully understand the illness and their advice to me is to ‘get out’, leave him. And while this may end my involvement physically; is it the right thing to do?
It would haunt me emotionally to leave a person this needy, knowing that perhaps no one would ever come along and truly care for them enough to stay!
Also, knowing that another unsuspecting woman would be destroyed as I have been - by a man that is so cute and charming that he’s able to get women to fall at his feet, not knowing they would be soon eaten up by this ravenous illness! Caught in a vicious spider’s web.

Will you please educate the public on this subject and perhaps help the caretakers (who are being destroyed by Bipolar people) to receive some love and understanding from other people who know them?

Stone Phillips was a fantastic dateline personality, Ann Curry has her gig with the Today show why was his contract not renewed? He has paid his dues and been there for a long time. Why was he not spared? I watch the today show also.

I have been away and when I came back I looked for Stone Phillips on Dateline only to learn that NBC did not renew his contract. Dumb Move! He was Dateline. While I respect Ann Curic, she has many other assignments. Big Loss. After Jay Leno is gone, NBC is not a station I will be looking at.

I remember a report Stone Phillips made in India concerning child labor. Children were shown working over boiling vats used in the silk trade. One little girl told him that she wanted to be a doctor. The employer (owner) of this child laughed and said, "She'll never be a doctor." I have always wondered what came of this little girl as a result of Stone's courageous report.
