I'll admit I don't know Tom well but after he had me read his screenplay something inside told me he was Jennifer's murderer. Your blog comment about a 'devoted' brother reminds me that when I read the screenplay I was convinced there was a possible incestuous relationship between Tom and Jennifer. I believe Tom got jealous and murdered her. The murder, as descibed in his screenplay, seemed to have too many minor details to have been written by someone who wasn't there.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

Tonight's story strikes close to home - a botched investigation, an obvious suspect, no justice, workings or non-workings behind the thin blue line, and a family who cannot find closure... On November 25, 2005 in London, KY, my daughter Jessica Trimmer got into a domestic dispute with her live-in boyfriend. She fled on foot toward the local bus station, for the first time leaving behind the two children who he never supported with spoken intention to return to get them, after he had called 911 on her. He went out after her in the dark and ran her over. Instead of calling 911 this time, he called his father to the scene. The pair drove her to the hospital in a different vehicle, still not alerting anyone, then dropped her off, returning to retrieve the initial vehicle. She died alone in the emergency room. The boyfriend claimed it was an accident and to date has not been charged with a crime. As in tonight's story, the victim's family is told that the investigation is still ongoing, despite the witness accounts that the family has helped come forward. Police told us the same things - that WE would be responsible for ruining the case. I hope that you may find an interest in our story for a future broadcast. We are stuck in trauma, same as the Morgan family. It will be interesting to see how tonight's story ends.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

I am outraged by what the officer in Michagan is saying. This is why she was at home and not at school. Tom arrives and wants to take the fossil watch to go sell for dope. He gets into a fight with his sister and by accident or not, kills her. I do not believe that the suspect in jail would do the crime during the daytime hours. Why not interview the trailer suspects girlfriend that he called on the payphone. You are guilty of slanting your story, too. It seems that you spent most of your story defending Tom, even though his story/movie very specifically accuses another person, Chris. At the same time, your rhetoric and approach to Pat Moug's story was to make him look vengeful and that Tom could not be a suspect. I guess some of your feelings may have come out in your story.

In your story, both Tom and Pat had issues with Kenney Boone's approach to the investigation. You did not spend much time regarding their issues with him. I also find it interesting that Kenney Boone has a strong feeling that the person who may have committed the crime lived across the street from Jennifer. Your story was two hours long and you spent two minutes at the end of your story mentioning this fact. That's odd.

How about Kenney Boone? He thinks he has his guy and thirteen years later, all Tom and his family gets is...what? How come Tom still thinks Chris did it? In your story, Kenney Boone says Chris has an alibi, yet Tom still goes off and writes his story, makes a film accusing a guy that Kenney Boone says is not a suspect. That's odd, too. Also, how come he did not communicate with Pat Moug? Something is not adding up. Nevertheless, your story did not do justice regarding Kenney Boone and the issues both Tom and Pat had with his approach to this thirteen year investigation.

Frankly, what did you accomplish with your two hour story? Maybe you could have spent more time with Kenney Boone and the guy who is in prison that once lived across the street from Jennifer. Wouldn't that be more beneficial for Tom, his family, Pat as well as actually working towards clarifying who killed Jennifer?

Instead, we received your personal slant on the story.

Maybe the tabloids will pick up your story. It had that feel to it.

I am disgusted that he is a police officer in this country. He is only interested in his personal justice. Did anyone even think of the fact that Pat was planning to use the "investor" tapes as a way to gain some sort of logical suspicion on Tom? When he was interviewing Tom he was trying to find a way to somehow catch him. I think Pat was just using his role as a would be director as a cover for what he was really doing. If your going to be directing a movie that has no financing, why wouldn't you show possible investors your investor tapes?

I believe Pat achieved the suspicion on Tom but as for the father and brother it seems a little far-fetched. Sure they were based off of characters in Tom's script, but for someone who has never written a screenplay of some sort, or who hasn't written pretty much at all, I'm sure they would use features of characters they could describe, characters they would know. Tom didn't write his family into the script to show how they did it, he wrote them in because it is always easiest to write about what you know. Why someone would want to write their family into a "based on actual events" movie about your sister's unsolved murder is beyond me but I'm sure it inst anything incriminating.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

I watch the show and had to leave and I could'nt wait to find out who mueder Jennifer.I think that the murder is nearer than they think. Tom seems like the most viable suspect to me - it seems odd that Sheriff Boone has all but discounted that theory. Tom's story of finding out that his sister has died was bizarre. Tom's dad calls him and says "whatever you do don't come home until tomorrow. Your sister died. Don't come home until tomorrow." And hangs up. What is this all about?

You've just called your son to tell him his sister has died and this is the entire conversation? This might be part of the reason Pat Moug wondered if the father was involved in covering up the crime. Is this the father's code to Tom that it's safer to wait a day before coming home (police presence wise, etc.)

The strangest part of the story is the script Tom wrote. Not only did he place himself at Jennifer's house before the crime but scripted himself as the object of jealousy/romantic rival of Jennifer's boyfriend. He says he did it to make Jennifer "pure" (didn't want people thinking she had two relationships going at once). Not to say I agree with Moug's theory that there was an incestuous relationship. His whole white creamy substance theory is ridiculous. But a lot of psychologists would say he has put himself at the scene of the crime for a reason. And though I think Moag is jumping to conclusions by saying Tom's father and brother burned Jennifer's body I do think the sheriff should look into whether Tom had any assistance in covering up the crime.

Another commenter suggested the theory that Tom called Jennifer and asked to meet her back at he trailer. A fight could have broken out (over Tom's drug use perhaps) and he killed her either accidentally or in sudden rage.

And, though it's not admissible in court, he did fail the lie detector test. They are not 100% accurate by any means but they are accurate enough that investigators frequently use them.

All that said, there certainly didn't seem to be enough proof against Tom to arrest him or bring him to trial. That Moag character has his own issues and has not added any credibility to his case.

The Sheriff seems to be completely passive and disinterested in delving into Tom as a suspect. Jennifer's ex-boyfriend was also a viable suspect. Did the sheriff fully investigate him? It's hard to know. The neighbor with a rape record seems more remote. It seems more likely that Jennifer knew her killer and had gone home from school specifically to meet with him.

This one might never get solved.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

Other lead that no one seemed to follow up on--this "friend" that the brother was visiting, and even stayed with another night after the dad told him his sister was murdered and not to come home for another day.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

WOW, I thought the rookie MI. cop presented his case poorly. As far as Mr Moag; we have never heard of Livonia Michigan and if Mr Moag is any example of the training, talent, professionalism on that Police Department they are in sad shape. I noticed that he didn't have any experts that spoke defending his wild-ass-conclusions. If his education qualifications are only a 1 week Reid Interrogation School and a 2-day up-date work shop that is pretty lame. I have a BA in psych/criminology & MA Admin of Justice and have atttended many continuation education classes, including the same training schools he claimed that gave him his expertise. I know in Southern California we would never get a filing from the DA on the witch hunt evidence that he laid out. Hopefully his acting is better than his law enforcement knowledge; what a joke.

He would do better getting a stand in job for Michael Chiklis. Also, was it necessary to show shots of him working out in his wife beater t-shirt (he needs to beef up his arms more). I suggest he leave the Morgan family & the law enforcement of Florence alone and start looking into "his crystal ball" and tell us what happened to Jimmy Hoffa or DB Cooper.

I commend you on calling him on his assumptions..

My regards to the Morgans. May they realize that Mr.
Moag doesn't represent the rest of the law enforcement community.

A quick note...I feel as if I have kept an open mind throughout this entire experience, from first reading Tom's script in 2004, to speaking with Tom about the facts and his opinions on the case, shooting the film Among Brothers, speaking with the Morgan family, meeting Pat Moug, watching Bold as a Lion, and finally, watching the Dateline feature. I have never been quick to judge anyone, and I have been cautious about forming and sharing my own opinions on this bizarre case.

Having said that, here is the big problem I have: the root of Mr. Moug's theories and accusations comes from Tom Morgan's script, and this script is a work of art. Although it is based on actual events, it is still a work of fiction. You can decide for yourself as to whether these "clues" are some cause for concern or are completely ludicrous. But the bottom line is that Pat Moug pulled alleged facts and evidence from a screenplay.

(Furthermore, the video interviews in Bold as a Lion between Tom Morgan and Pat Moug were shot as short promotional videos in order to pitch Brothers to investors. They are not recorded depositions, and they are not testimony. Like Tom's movie, they are artistic in nature and should never be mistaken for fact.)

So why did Tom Morgan write himself at the scene of the crime in his movie? I've spoken with him about this, I've thought about it on my own, and I'll tell you why -- because it is a metaphor for how Tom feels. I believe he feels as if he should've been there to protect his sister, as if he barely missed the opportunity to prevent this outrageous crime and save his sister's life.

Pat Moug thinks that Tom's writing of himself at the murder scene (and writing much of the movie from the killer's point of view) is some kind of mistake or "slip up" on Tom's part, revealing that he was actually involved in the crime. To me, it has the opposite effect. It shows that Tom can write about such a heartbreaking event with no barriers. This is his way of finding closure -- by trying to understand the actions of the killer(s), by trying to think about what the killer thought about that terrible day. Instead of simply thinking of the killer as some violent psychopath, he thinks of this person as a human being and tries his best to understand them. Tom Morgan loved his sister, and writing about her death is how Tom has been able to move on. If my sister were murdered, I would hope that I could be as strong as Tom Morgan and capable of thinking about her death with as much insight and lucidity.

I'm proud to be a part of the film Among Brothers, and I'm proud to know Tom and the Morgan family. Whether or not this crime is ever solved, Jennifer Morgan's life will continue to be remembered and celebrated, as it should be.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

Keith, I was mesmerized by the content of the Jennifer Morgan Murder as presented by MSNBC. It was a sad episode unlike thousands more like it throughout the country. Livonia detective Pat Moag took a giant leap of faith in making such an assessment against Jennifer's brother Tom because including himself in a screen play or of reportedly failing a lie detector test or responding the person responsible for the murder should be prosecuted and sentenced accordingly by the court or looking downward when asked if he killed his sister. All of these things in and of themselves does not make one "a murderer". I think the country sheriff has nailed his best suspect who is currently incarcerated in a federal penitentiary on an unrelated crime. Detective Moag should spend more time on the beat and less time making movies. It might serve him better as a Detective. He reminds me of the Palm Beach Detective who botched another murder and upon a thorough investigation it was learned the Palm Beach Detective was nothing more than a "hair dresser"!

Dueling movie versions of a crime

For my sanity . . . PLEASE let me know what happened at the end. After watching for 1 hour & 45 minutes, I fell asleep! The last thing that I remember was SLED investigating Tom after failing a polygraph. Then I recall the detective making a film and showing it to a group of friends at a theater.

Failing the lie detector test. How did his watch get into her hand if he wasn't there? And what was she doing at home early - maybe to meet him in response to his request for help or something. His nonchalant attitude. His knowledge of the crime scene. I'm not saying it was murder - maybe an accident that he thought had to be covered up to avoid self incrimination. These questions would need to be answered for me if I was the investigator.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

Was this story really worthy of 2 hours reporting time? Her family was very close and very supportive. My prayers go out to her family! I still think about Jennifer as I go through my daily life. How I wish I could share with her all of my blessings. I, too, knew this family. While I was in college, I dated Tom Morgan. There is absolutely NO WAY that Tom (nor his family) would commit this crime. Tom comes from a very close tight-knit, loving family. It sickened me to see Pat Moag's version. I hope that Dateline's story stirs up information leading to the arrest of Jenny's killer and eventually gives the Morgan family some closure. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!

Keith Morrison, through his editing of Friday night's Dateline, also put HIS spin on the "who done it". Unfortunately, Keith Morrison is guilty of doing what he accuses Pat Moug of doing. He seemed to be damning Pat and protecting Tom, while not doing much to follow up on a lot of holes investigation headed by Kenney Boone. We did not get enough of this part of the story. I do not think Keith Morrison did Jennfer "justice" either; a bit hypocritical. Ironically, Tom Morgan's movie is just as accusitory as Pat's documentary. Yet, Keith Morrison's Dateline story went to great lengths to show one side, protecting Tom and damning Pat. If you have not seen Tom's movie AND Pat's documentary then Keith Morrison's report would make you think exactly what HE wanted you to think. It is easy to persuade people when they do not accurately get both sides of the story. Keith Morrison's story did not help answer to many questions to who killed Jennifer. Shouldn't that anger the Morgan family?

Dueling movie versions of a crime

R. ALL THESE COPS ARE DOING THIS!! They attend a class and think they deserve a diploma. that’s why its a certificate and NOT a diploma. who knows if the guy teaching the class didn’t have ONLY a certificate, but should have a degree in said field to say the least. cops are out of control and believe they are all at the top of their game. few are, and usually they're in control of the shop, not a worker bee.

don’t get me started on these DA's either. these guys have some who couldn’t be more guilty and they want more evidence to prosecute. and then you have others that just go after the innocent based on other liars. like those lacrosse players who were supposed to of raped that stripper or dancer broad? what’s up with that DA?

then to suggest that the guy nailed his own sister? i mean, i hope they are so suing that wanna be law enforcement excuse of an earthling.

and finally what the hell is dateline doing anymore? tabloid TV, no different than any other show from maury to springer to okra, just no audience participation.

But seriously pat, take up sky diving or something man.

I agree 100% with the detective from S.C., when he stated Pat was simply a young cop trying like hell to make a name for himself. The sad part about that is, Pat's bizarre investigation ( how can a legitimate detective investigate without checking out the alibis? ) came at the expense of a murdered woman and a very distraught family. I put it on while flipping through the channels and for two hours, I was glued. Very well done.<br><br>To say that Pat Moag is a nut case is too much of an understatement. Here's a cop gone bad. He lied through his teeth when he said being replaced as director had nothing to do with his obsession to frame Tom Morgan. Moag reminds me of those old time Jim Crow sheriff deputies who had hanging trees all around town. &quot; They's guilty 'cuz I says so. Hangum!&quot; Where was the white substance the coroner never found? When did Tom Morgan say it was vanilla ice cream he brought over to his sister's in the semi-fictional screenplay? Where was the proof the family covered up her death? To accuse poor Jennifer's father and other brother, too? Wow, I sure am glad he never pulled me over. I think we've all run across cops like him. Personally, I think he should have been a security guard in a fast food restaurant parking lot somewhere. Why would a career cop still act like a cop wannabee? Hey, Pat, stay away from Orlando. We don't like your kind around here! Maybe, I'm your guy, but I have an alibi. Too bad you're not smart enough to check it out because you hate to be wrong.<br><br>As far as Jennifer's brother, of course he's going to have a strong opinion of who did it. If my sister died, I would go after that creep and be just as obsessed about his guilt as the idiot cop was with him. The major difference between the star cast members, Pat &amp; Tom, is that Tom was the victim's brother. The cop was laughed all the way back to Michigan with only intangible evidence between his ears. What was that comment he made? Something about not caring who he put in jail? Something about not caring if they're innocent? I wonder how many people he personally obsessed over and now they are locked away. Ego, ego, ego. Good thing he doesn't have authority to arrest people all over the world like he dreams of.<br><br>Oh, thank you, Mr. Morrison. It was a superb piece of journalism. Thank you for these programs they are very informative.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

would like to know when this will air agian

Dueling movie versions of a crime

It's Saturday morning, Jan. 12, 2008, and I interrupted my bread making to watch MSNBC's documentary on the death of Jennifer Morgan. It aired from 6 to 8 am. EST. I can't, by any stretch of the imagination, think that Tom Morgan or any member of his family had anything to do with his sister's death. With 10 minutes remaining, I was hoping that there would be some sort of a conclusion to this baffling mystery. I feel everyone connected to this investigation wasn't really seeing the big picture, they can't see the forest for the tree.Instead of focusing on Jennifer's immediate family, they should broaden their sights on any possible outside person/persons of interest. Unfortunabely, this airing, although informative, was anti-climatic. There will be closure for the family, just keep the faith because through God, all things will come to pass.

Dueling movie versions of a crime

I also went to Francis Marion with Jennifer and she was my neighbor at the on campus apartments for 2 years. I remember the day she was moving out to move to the trailer park across the street. She said she was just ready to move off campus. I always felt like the trailer park was shady and was confused on why she and her friend would move over there. But all that does not matter. What does matter is that an innocent girl with her whole life ahead of her is not here anymore and some killer is out there. I think we should all concentrate on finding the killer. Her brother had an alibi a solid one. As for her boyfriend , I knew him too. I would be shocked if he had anything to do with this. Shocked but do understand that people snap. However, I don't know. We need to pray her murder be brought to justice. God Bless You Jennifer
