It's almost, as if, Eric is being held hostage. How can we allow the country of Nicaragua to do this to one of our own. This does set a precedence for other countries to get away with this. Many Americans make the mistake of thinking that they are protected by the U.S. Consulate, as well as the by the laws of the U.S. when they live in or visit another country. There is a saying in Spanish, "dime con quien andas y te digo quien eres", translation: "tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are".
This young man expects to be treated differently from other citizens of Nicaragua, and I ask, "Why?" He chose not only to live there, but also to be part of the culture.

It surely seems like a railroad job down in Managa and that they are the ones covering up for the real killer !

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I am outraged by the court hearing that took place. I have visited Nicaragua myself not so long ago, and alone. During my visit I had many concern's about my safety. It appears that the mismanagement of the evidence in Eric's case by the judge and prosecuter has authenticated my fears. This seems to me that this will be a major blow to the tourist economy of Nicaragua and it should be. I can not imagine that when Americans and other money bringing tourist hear about this, that they would not reconsider any plans to visit Nicaragua or to purchase real estate. there. It appears that there is a very corrupt legal system in Nicaragua. Im terribly sorry to hear of Erics situation and I wish him and his family all the best and ultimatly I wish for Eric's freedom from the Nicaraguan prison.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

My heart goes out to Eric, his friends and family. Why the State Department is not lobbying and exerting more pressure on behalf of Eric is unconsciable. I think that had his trial been here in the United States it would have all gone the way it should have went and he would have been found innocent. I think that he was just an easy target to put the blame on and unfortunatley they made a really bad decision. I truely think that the judge's decision to throw out the evidance supporting his innocense was largely based on her own personal feelings or anger about Doris's tragic death, and that's not fair at all. I don't believe that Doris's family is wrong in anyway to morn, because it really is a sad thing to happen to someone so young, but it isn't right to put an innocent man in jail. Who know's for all i know I could be so wrong, and maybe he did do it, but on simple judge of character, which I believe every person in this world does have, I didn't see a guilty person being interviewed about this murder. You can see it in his eyes, that he's telling the truth, and when you can see the truth in someone's eyes that says a lot to me. I pray for the family of Doris, and I pray for the family of Eric.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

Wow, I've never seen someone railroaded in real life as badly as this case. I do however know how to solve this case and get Eric out of prison.

The main eye witness is no doubt, a son or family member of a very influential and powerful person in that community. Think of all the facts behind the eye witness first, being arrested... along with the other man who was convicted. 1 man gets immunity while the other is hung out to dry... suddenly adding Eric as a suspect in place of this eye witness.

Check the judges bank account records. I believe she was bribed from this influential family member of the eye witness. The victums family was very poor from all the news clips I saw.... so how does a poverty stricten family get the funds to create a blog on the internet scrictly to smutting Eric's reputation? Whoever is running this blog, is no doubt the same money source that bribed the judge and is no doubt connected to the family member of this Eye Witness.

This is all circumstancial but makes alot more sense then the meaningless circumstancial evidence they decided to use to find Eric guilty.

Look into these facts and I have no doubt in my mind you will find someone trying to cover up for this Eye Witness.... bribing a judge and quickly sticking Eric in a place that could very well end his life... and possibly this story. We need to save Eric before the worst happens and justice is no longer an option.

Just look into this and I believe you should find what you're after.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

Based on the evidence presented in a U.S. Court of Law the case against Veloz would be thrown out and he would be set free. We were both horrified at the lack of justice this young man received. If he is not freed by the three judges in charge of the appeal, every person in the world should boycott the country. If a single judge is allowed to toss out all defense evidence, and accept the pathetic word of one person who might well be the killer, who can be safe traveling in the country? This show convinced me to never travel there, sorry to say, as I'm a world traveler and have been to 62 countries. I don't feel anyone would be safe there is such an injustice can occur. It was so clear that the young man was totally railroaded. He could have easily fled the country, but instead, was grieving and went to try and help the family. We were appalled at the original judge, the mother of the victim, and the other hysterical bystanders. Doesn't the mother want the true killer of her beautiful daughter to pay for the crime? How could all the evidence be thrown out of court? Ten people will not all lie for one person -- instead, they would be disgusted if that young man had asked them to lie on his behalf. I am so upset at this lack of justice and the very thought that an innocent young man be imprisoned for 30 years for a crime he did not commit, that I am trembling in anguish. Please, tell your viewers where we can write to protest this crime against him? Obviously, logic flew out the window and heated emotion took over. Shame on the mother and shame on the judge and shame on the entire country if they don't move to right this wrong.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

If you watch the video that Dateline showed in which Eric is being taken to a cop car, it appears that the officer who grabs Eric by the shirt at his right shoulder could be the source of the scratches on Eric's shoulder. There is no evidence at all to support this guilty plea. I feel that the Judge was inappropriate in her findings and, unfortnately, feel that this all boiled down to finding the American guilty. With a prosecutor and judge like this, no one stands a chance to win any cases here. To throw out more evidence than what was even found at the crime scene is barbaric. We should all stand behind Eric and do something to get him out of jail before they eventually try to murder him. I definitely support Eric and plan to visit his website.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I do think this is political. To: dateline@nbc.com
Tonight while watching Dateline and your story on Eric Volz and the scenes of Nicaragua, especially those of beautiful San Juan, Del Sur. It brought back some wonderful memories that are now changed. I agree with the comment on your blog from "A Mad Nicaraguan" I just returned last month after spending 4 weeks in Nicaragua, one of those weeks in the heart of San Juan Del Sur. While there I must admit I never heard one word about the case. I'm sure the locals were talking about it but never to this Gringo. I really fell in love with the country and the people everywhere I went. I traveled as a single male staying in ordinary type hotels not in the 4 star hotels even though I could have if I wanted to. I wanted to get to know and talk with the regular people as was considering spending 4 or 5 months a year there. However, after watching what happens in their justice system I am giving those plans a second and third thought. From the evidence presented on TV I fail to understand how he could have been convicted. As I said I must agree with the reasoning on :Mad Nicaraguan and his reasoning. I believe that any American seeing your show may think twice now before spending time like I did there.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

WEll I watch finish watching in NBC about this so horrible traggic that happen to Eric Volz I know that this is hard but I believe there is justice to see someone go through this I cant understand it how could they not see it they have a inncent person who shouldn't pay for someones guilt. A few things bothered me in regards to the story. One: The supposed, current boyfriend was never interviewed, shown, and, for that matter may not even exist(of course unless I missed that part). Two: Having myself lived in Nicaragua in 1997, the mother and aunt's dress and accessories doesn't coincide with their social and economical status. The average employee makes $50-$75 per month.Third: Where's the DNA evidence to prove guilt or innocence ? Also, the attorney he retained to defend him works for Daniel Ortega. The judge also demonstrated a bias conviction, demonstrating she also part of the plan. I hope you follow this story. I personally believe there is more to this story and may be part of a government cover up.

Well for one thing it was actually being coverd on the English news which hardly EVER happens. Just to find out the story was about a white American male that lands himself in jail!!! Why was this story so imporant that all the Dateline viewers had to watch it and hear about..why?
Why do I have to know the life of Eric Volz? What makes him so important and speacil that this story was done on him? WHY???
I have been in the US since 1983, when my family left Nicargua to avoid the Civil war.
My family looks for news on our country to see what is going ever day, which we usually find on the spanish news stations.
But no not tonight...tonight dateline spend there time to cover a story about Nicaragua, but why was this story covered in the first place because it's about a white male in jail. That is the only reason!!!
It's always the same thing here in the United States... when Latinos and Black people go to jail who cares, OH well we never here about it on the news they just go to jail unless there about to be executed then all the news stations are on that story like a dog with his bone.
But heaven forbid that a White America male go to jail and in another country then we all get to hear about this injustice on the news. And this story made it to Nightline no less. Let's make Nicaragua look like this awful place that can't even properly investigate a crime.
Why does how our world work suprise me I don't know? Actually it doesn't, it angers me and makes me ashmed to be a US Citizen because the prejudice in this country is NEVER going to change. NERVER EVER!!!
Why not report on how beatiful Nicaragua is, about toursim, the people, the country, the beaches, the food, the culture etc.? What made this story so important that is was covered tonight?

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

What an amazing story! I have traveled all over Latin countries, and have heard stories similar to Eric's case. You are guilty until proven otherwise, but all the proof needed to free Eric was to no avail. Justice system is corrupt in these countries and can not be trusted. We have problems in our own country, but its nothing, compared to what goes on in developing countries. We should think twice, before we take another trip in these countries. It is sad, because I truly love the people!

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I hope that anyone who thinks Eric is guilty based on their stupid ideas is never on my jury. Sheesh! Based on the evidence that was presented on this Dateline show he seems pretty innocent to me until PROVEN otherwise. There is absolutely no proof that he did or hired some thug to do it. This should have nothing to do with him being an American OR where the crime was committed. I believe that he did not physically kill the girl but I believe he had something to do with the murder. He never once talked about the sadness he had or that he would never ever kill anyone in general. He always talked about how he has alibi's that he was not there. I think he was involved in some way or another. He just continued to talk all about where he was, but I agree that they did not investigate the case thoroughly. We also did not hear anything about the relationship with him and the codefendant that is serving 30 years as well.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

The evidence does not support Eric being guilty. More than anything I think he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and became a lightning rod for the anti U.S. sentiments which are very real South of the border, feelings that became volatile when whipped up by the Nicaraguan press.

Does the U.S. press ever go for sensationalism to sell papers? I'll bet this story sold alot of papers.

How long do you think that judge would have lived if she hadn't found Eric guilty? Was she receiveing death threats? Dunno, NBC didn't cover that part of the story. My guess is the guns going off outside the courtroom during the trial were also speaking to the Judge.

If you find yourselves asking why don't these people South of the Border like us, then do your homework and read the "Pinochet Files" to get an idea of the kind of unjust behaviors our government has participated in South of the Border, and to date no one has been held accountable. We have also done many wonderful things to help these countries, but one does not excuse the other.

Does anyone really think that every foreigner jailed by our country or in our country has always received justice and a fair trial? Who's telling their stories?

Don't get me wrong I think Eric is getting a raw deal that stinks, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, including the people we as a nation have done this to.

He is articulate and sure of himself. Perhaps some may think that he is cocky. He was a successful, young entrepeneur who needed just those virtues to succeed. I believe that it is just that strong character that is keeping him alive. Our government must be contacted, must be urged, must be heard and seen as a strong force. A force that by it's public united strength will force the Nicaraguan government to look at this case with

No vacation is worth visiting a country that has no justice. I am also familiar with the aid provided by US embassys, it is non existent. As a person who travels regularly to Central America, it reminds me how vulnerable to injustice we are once we step out of the United States. And one thing that is seemingly lost with all of this is that a horrible killer is still loose on the streets of that small town, with now little (or no) hope of ever finding the person responsible for the young woman's brutal death. Any American can afford to pay for the DNA testing. And any of us would do it if that's what it takes to determine guilt or innocence; it's not that expensive anymore. This is the obvious question. So why didn't the reporter think of it? And why didn't Eric question the cops as to DNA testing. I would assume that DNA testing might not be routinely done in a poor country, but it might be budgeted in for such a publicized case, or it could have been done if Eric had offered to pay for it if he really wanted to catch the killer(s). The reporter is shorting us on some story. I hope he is able to be freed, and true justice served. I am not surprised though. American money is greatly desired by foreign countries, but the people are resented. And we foolishly think we will be accepted wherever we go because we are generous, but we are often ignorant of local customs or traditions. (Look at Richard Gere). That makes us appear arrogant. We are far from the safety our own country offers, and tend to forget we are at the mercy of the country in which we are guests. In spite of all it's failings, we in the US still have, I feel, one of the most fair political, justice, and prison systems in the world. I'd take my chances here! Why no disclosure of who Doris was supposed seeing? 2. If Eric had moved on and Doris was in a new relationship, why was he still seeing her and apparently still in a sexual relationship with her? He appeared very arrogant, self centered and a typical spoiled rich kid who really has no regard for anyone other than his self. I saw no concern or compassion for Doris, from him. We all know if you have enough money you can purchase any service, even murder and if you planned on having someone murdered...wouldn't you make certain to cover your self with an alibi? It just seemed he went out of his way to account for his entire day with way to many check able alibis. They are determined to indict Eric precisely to the extent to which they suspect, in their conscience, he is innocent. Eric possesses the moral serenity of knowing he did not do this. The Nicaraguans arrayed against Eric obviously have never known what it is like to seek a truth which exists independently of their own psychological needs. Based on the evidence there cannot be a single person who has a moral confidence in Eric's guilt that even begins to compare to the moral confidence of those who allow themselves to persuaded by what is objectively the case here.

Every year that I go back home I hear about these kinds of things. But honestly people that go to my country with american money feel that they have the power to do anything and if that is the case I wish that the immigration laws in my country would be enforced just like they are here. I guess it is ok for anyone from the U.S. to visit any country and even reside and not get treated like a lot of immigrants are being treated. This guy did not convince me that he didn't do it. Plus the story makes the country look like an evil place because the U.S. likes to make everything political, always sticking their nose where it should not be. Look at Iraq for an example. What happened to the weapons of mass destruction? The U.S. got away with getting Saddam out of power but for what? How many kids and not only north american kids but kids that are from all of the world fighting for something that the U.S. feels that it was right. How many innocent people must die because of the actions of our supposedly intellectual government. Only because the story was about a white kid, are we to feel sorry for him? What if it was a hispanic or black or any other ethnicity that was in the same situation here in the U.S.? I bet the book would have been thrown on him/her.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I really believe that Eric should be set free because the evidence that convicted him was too weak to give a young man with a great future 30 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. I left wondering a few things...did Eric have on his person the cell phone in particular that the reports were about? I think he is a very brite individual and could have had the cell phone records all set up for a good defense. I would like to know more about what the boy/boys shared that stated that they were paid to carry some boxes from the shop. What time was that? Did they say it WAS Eric? What was the mood? What all did they see? I think they could add a great deal more info. .WHY wern't DNA test done? There had to be DNA EVERYWHERE, fingernails, semen, pubic hairs, etc.Further dialog with the car rental agency as to who picked up the car, when, etc...A really detail going over the car would have helped. To hear the condition of the dead girl, I have to believe that the torture they put her through...all the wrappings that was used to tie her up,etc....that DNA should be all over the place!!! What kinds of information did they get from the other man they arrested? Where was he? What was he doing? We didn't hear much of what he had to say for himself. Eric Stolz seemed to be a very arrogant unlikable guy, so full of himself and I was expecting him to be guilty...but...with face-to-face eye-witnesses? How can that have possibly happened? Is our government addressing this at all? Isn't anyone overseeing the judges over there? Could you please keep us updated on anything that is happening in this case? Thank you so very much. Please keep us informed. I would also like to see the story that the journalist wrote on this subject. On every plane going to Nicaragua you encounter sports groups, civic clubs, and medical personnel from the United States trying to help this second poorest country in the hemisphere.
Average citizens from the United States have built schools, libraries, and clinics on their own with their own funds (non-government related). The people of the United States have been kind to the many refugees who have come to the United States from Nicaragua.
When Daniel Ortega was elected President, he did not thank anyone from the United States or Germany or Holland or Taiwan or Spain for the help they have given to Nicaragua. He only mentioned Venezuela and Mr. Chavez. I think that citizens from the United States and other countries should be realistic now about how well they are actually being received in Nicaragua. Once we visited Nicaragua. It was an experience I will never forget. We needed a body guard even to get across the border. The crossing was not cheap. It took a day to get in and it wasnt even a busy border crossing. Once we did get in we were told by our body guard that it was a three day visa and that we could not go back before the three days were up. We had planned on an over night and packed for one. I was told to keep a low profile and to not tell people we were from the USA. Once at a mini market of sorts a person came up to us and asked if we were Americans, I said yes, to the shegrins of my companions. The people in the mini-market were so happy to meet us and to tell people from America that this country welcomed them. Now, to Eric, it appears to me that this man did act with disrespect to the countries people and culture. He was a foolish boy. It appears to me that here in the USA we need to remember that we are doing these same things to others that are from war zone, terrorists countries. Eric you will be in my prayers and I am beleiving justice will prevail.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I saw the story & pray he can get out alive, if he's got any luck left.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

As a Nicarguan I am a little embarrassed about how the authorities handled this case, first of all to those who think Nicaragua is dangerous, it it not, If you look at our statistics we have a low crime rate and yes the people are poor but loyal and kind, it is an amazing country with a sour past. Now we should take into consideration two things: was the judge or doris's family sandinistas? if the answer is yes there could have been some political influence to get a guilty verdict, our new "president" Daniel ortega despises the United States but NOT the nicaraguan people, americans make more than %50 percent of our tourists and there are over 1 million nicaraguans living in the US, another thing to consider is the fact that doris's family seemed to not like him from the get go; as it is usual in poor areas of nicaragua there is resentment to those who have more, it might be the case her family never approved of him because of her social standing which is why they were quick to judge him and pressured the judge through the mob. I believe he is innocent but please don't blame Nicaragua.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

to the people who think the media (Dateline in this case) only covers white injustices on this board... It's just not true. There have been many stories on Dateline covering injustices in this country about all races. In fact most stories I see on Dateline about injustice are about black inmates (as likely it should be). Don't point a figure toward Dateline or anyone else thinking this is more than a story about an American in Nicargua that is not being giving a fair trial and will most likely be killed down there if something isn't done. Characterizing it any other way is wrong. And if you're ashamed to be a US Citizen then you should move.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

Only God knows what truly happened here. I must admit that when i first saw the eric volz story on youtube i thought he was 100% innocent and believed he was unjustly imprisoned, but after hearing the 'nicaraguan' side of the story, i am not quite conviced of his innocence. I am neither comdemning nor am i exonerating him. A lot is being said about the anti-american sentiment in Nicaragua, but according to the Nicaraguan paper 'La Prensa' Eric Volz is half mexican!!!! It is truly sad and embarrasing to see postings here by nicaraguans admiting to being 'embarrassed' to have been born in Nicaragua. I ask you: is there such thing as a 'perfect' judicial system? How many people have been wronglly imprisoned here? Just so you all know, there's been people here that have spent 10,15, 20 years behind bars only to find out they were innocent. yes people it has happened here!!!!!!!

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

This story appears to be a true travesty of justice.
Or is it?
Mr. Volz sure had an excellent alibi.
Maybe too good?
Did he pay that man to kill her? and the killer got caught? And then made a deal?
Every one is outraged, and with supposedly good reason.
But how easy it is to take a side without seing the other.
Because the person is white?
Because it happened in a country where there is no justice unless you belong to the right party? or have enough money to buy it?

What does the prosecution know? Why is the state department not involved more extensively?
I see how some people on this blog want the US to intervene militarily.
There is enough hatred and ignorance in this world already. So stop it.
Educate yourselves.
I hope Mr. Volz, if innocent, which personally I think he is, gets his freedom back. But if he committed this heinous crime or paid someone to do it, the Nicaraguan government should be able to come up with proof.
God Bless America

Young men that age tend to be cocky, and when you are in a situation, you need to learn to be a little more humble, and not so arrogant. That, however, does not equal murder. This is such an easy case, dig her up and do the DNA, what all of us "Americans" are used to is that we can, or even have the right to, bully our system on another government. THis is a true trajedy, but it is just one more time that we as Americans think we can intercede with another government and change the outcome of their local laws, customs, and unfortunatly prejudices. Poor kid, I'll write my congressman, like that will help, and pray for him, that has a better chance. Hopefully, someone will have mercy on this young man, and heal the ignorance of the victims family and show them that a grino in jail does not equal justice for their beautiful daughter. Very sad.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I lived in Nicaragua for 2 years from 01-03. The people of Nicaragua are so awesome, they truly are the nicest people that I have ever met. Although they have nothing, they would willingly give you the shirt off their back's if asked. I love the people of Nicaragua. Unfortunately the Government is very corrupt, not the people, the government. The people have little education and aren't the smartest, therefore they believe everything they see in the media, much like we do here in America. The news and media are very biased and the fact that Daniel Ortega (an Anti-American) is the President doesn't help any. I know that if the judge would have ruled guilty, her and her family would be in danger of being killed. Although unfortunate, I am confident that the truth will set him free. Please don't judge the Nica's they are so awesome. The fact is this story needs to be told and people need to know the severity of such a horrible injustice being done in Nicaragua. To the person who said "Let's make Nicaragua look like this awful place that can't even properly investigate a crime", the truth is the no one has to make Nicaragua look like that they are doing it on their own in Eric's case. Eric Volz is innocent. Period. An innocent man does not deserve to go to jail for 30 years for a crime he did not commit, no matter what his race or nationality is. It seems people's resentments against white americans is not only evident in the Nicaraguan people that have convicted him, but of people in the US as well. Whatever people's resentments are, it's not right to let them be the cause of ruining an innocent man's life.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

For more information go to www.friendsofericvolz.com. The first judge is being investigated for several cases of corruption where he was allegedly bribed. Tony D'Souza (reporter fellow interviewed by Morrison) admits that there is strong evidence that Eric offered money, that is what pissed the people of San Juan. And what really pissed people from San juan was the fact that Eric showed up with hired guns from another country inside the courtroom, try to do that in the US, show up with mexican soldiers or bodyguards with AK47s in a Los Angeles courthouse, and see what will happen to you. The first judge refused to turn the file over to the second judge and kept it breaking the law for several weeks.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I was born in Nicaragua. I am American, originally from Northern California. I know Eric and knew Doris personally. For those of you who have never even traveled out of the United States, please save your breath when talking about the "anti- american" attitude here in Nicaragua. I am married to a Nica who I have been with for years. I am accepted as family everywhere I go. I work in a school outside of San Juan in the 'campo' which is where you would generally find the most "anti- american" Nicas, and never once have I experienced any "anti-american attitude" with the exception of higher prices which are easily talked down (everyone needs to make a living). This town is extremely small. Everyone is in everyone else's daily drama. Everyone knows each other, we are a very tight-knit community. The first Nicaraguan man that was convicted and released still walks the streets as a free man. He works in his aunt's surf shop. I see him daily. Don't get it wrong, most people want nothing to do with him, and they have not cleared him of the crime in their minds. But let me ask you this, what would you do if your daughter was brutally raped, murdered, and bound by the wrists and ankles as if she were some animal? Secondly, let's flip the situation, what if it was some immigrant (let me remind you that the majority of U.S. citizens think are here taking up our "precious" jobs) who was convicted of the crime? Would that make it any different? I am not saying Eric is guilty, nor am I saying he is innocent. The truth is, even here, no one knows who was involved and who wasn't, a part from Eric, "Rosita", and "Krusty"- and anyone else who may have been involved. Doris was a kind, intelligent woman, who deserved only the best. When the courts accepted Eric's appeal, and not "Rosita's" it makes it look like a lot like bribery and pressure from the States. "Rosita" has never and will never have a dime, therefore he will rot in prison. If in fact he is guilty, that is what he deserves. I hope that Eric truly is innocent. I hope that he was wrongfully imprisoned and they are not releasing a murderer. What a tragedy it would be if, for the ignorance of the U.S., a murderer was left to live a free life. I only have one question for Eric, why are you so emotionally detached from what happened? When claiming your innocence, why have you never once mentioned your love or sympathy for her? On the other side of things, what mother would want to believe her son is a murderer? What friend would want to believe he is a murderer? How far would you go to protect your loved one? Of course you're going to believe it when he says he's innocent. Lastly, I want to let you all know the crime scene investigation is no where near up to standards here, in Nicaragua. There is no DNA testing, instead they use blood type- and how broad is that? Eric did have finger nail scratches or him arms and back. I have seen the photographs. Where did they come from? Don't be so narrow minded. I can reasonably look at both sides of this situation. Eric never seemed like a harmful person to me. In the end, I hope justice is served- whatever that may entail.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I have followed this story from Day 1. How can you all be so ignorant? Most of you have never even been to Nicaragua, much less San Juan. I live here, in the very quaint town this all occurred in, and have for years. Shame on you people for being so judgemental! You are so wrapped up in believing that America is a just place. Well, if you knew anything about our government, you would know how corrupt the States truly is. Almost all of my relatives served this country- as CIA agents, military generals, etc. They have told me horror stories about what the U.S. has done and covered up to save face. How can any of you say he IS innocent? It is just to believe so, but to say it is a fact is absurd! They don't have DNA testing here. They don't even have the money to support it. Yes, the family of the victim is poor, but what does that have to do with this situation. Furthermore, internet blogs are often free!!! Please think before you speak! Although it might be breaking a faulty American tradition, but you would all be wise to do so!

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

To David, Gaithersburg, MD, one of the things by which Americans are known for among developed countries is "very poor public education", and with comments like yours and many others, you only prove it right. I find it interesting, how many people choose to "sugar coat" the fact that money, specially in a third world country can help you get away with murder, in this case only Eric knows if he is innocent or not. The problem is that corruption pervades sandinistas judges, sandinista supreme court of Justice (I would say instead " of corruption"). In Nicaragua, there is no justice since Ortega took over the presidency in 2007. Judges, the Supreme Court, and all legal authorities have become loyal and faithfull to Ortega, who still hates American (or Nicaraguans that fled sandinista's revolution in the 80s to the U.S.) I wouldn't be surprised if Ortega ordered the judge to condemn Eric in order to get some money to free him later (those are Ortega's corrupted tactics to get money from hostages, narco-traffic, political adversaries, or innocent americans, and nicaraguans living in the U.S. I wouldn't recommend any US citizen go to Nicaragua until Ortega leaves power (for your knowledge Ortega is trying to get reelected forever, as Hugo Chavez from Venezuela did it recently).

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I've been watching this trial from the beginning. Since 1991, I've been on assignment in Central America where I cover politics, the military, human rights and other socio-economic themes. Sixteen years spent covering the region have convinced me that the legal system in the Isthmus is at best a travesty. Eric Volz’s fraudulent conviction is partly the result of anti-American zealotry, notorious judicial ineptitude and corruption, and the Nicaraguan courts' transparent surrender to mass hysteria. His imprisonment and the legal circus that followed the appeals' court to have him released were a gross miscarriage of justice and an obscenity.
Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

Dear Gary Groen and James Hamilton:

Do you have some evidence that we don't know about? Please share, it you have information about this case that implicates Mr. Volz. Otherwise, you should both become suspects yourselves, for trying to cover up the investigation. Mr. Groen, you even admit to being at the scene of the crime. Mr. Hamilton, how do we know YOU didn't pay someone to kill Doris.

My point is, you need evidence to assume someone is guilty. You can't just assume guilt, and force someone to prove their innocence.

You should both be ashamed of yourselves.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

From what I have read about this case it does appear that Eric V. is innocent.

However, what amazes me reading these comments is how naive some of the comments posted here are. Before I go on, a point of clarification, not every country in the world operates on the assumption of innocence. I believe that in the French legal system you are guilty until you prove your innocence.

It is important that people understand that when you travel outside your home country you are subject to the laws of the country in which you are travelling. Sometimes these systems are good, other times they are not. It pays to do your research before you go. On a similar note it is highly unlikely that your own government can do much to help you. So, be careful when you leave home.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

some people think that when they fly to one of these "hispanic countries' they going to find the same faces than outside a 7-11 (same attitude) ,oh my god! what so wrong they are! they are in their country ,that mean legal and you are the foreigner,is not the isla bonita and spanish flies around there anymore.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

This stuff happens all the time in the US.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I'm from Nicaragua, and actually I don't wanna take part here. Just because you're white and may have dollars, doesn't meant that you deserve better treatment ANYWHERE! This guy clearly received better treatment in prison than most prisoners around the world. He wasn't tortured, starved, raped or killed. He actually looked like he had a few pounds to easily spare when he was released. I highly doubt that is typical for other prisoners in Nicaragua. I feel extremely bad for the young girl's family and especially mother. It's time for Keith Morrison to investigate the Injustice in the American system, he doesn't have to travel far to discover injustice and ignorance. The American masses are not more enlightened than the people of Nicaragua. The Court system and judges in the USA are neither more inteligent nor more fair and balance than their equivalent in Nicaragua or Turkey (Midnight Express). The prosecutors in the USA have the same attitude, agenda, dishonesty and feeling of self rightiousness as their Nicaraguan counterpart. It is easy for Keith Morrison to pick on easy target as Nicaragua and look down on them then to fight the Federal Government of the USA and the Justice department of the USA.
At least in Nicaragua it happens once in a blue moon while in the USA it happens every day. It is our hypocricy, foolishness and sense of denial ("Nothing like that can happen here")that help us turn a blind eye to exactly the same injustice (exactly the same) here in America.
Apparently the humpback cannot see his own hump.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

Attention people who know it all!!!: The term "Gringo" is not an insult, nor sign of disrespect. This case should of been investigated much further, accurate forensic evidence if it is still attainable.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I am troubled by the earlier comments made on this blog. First of all I don't think all the facts about this case were revealed by Dateline. I want to ask Dateline first why they chose to exclude the work history of Doris. This woman was a popular model in Central America and had a thriving business in San Juan Del Sur that catered to foreigners. They seem to portray her as this poor local when in fact she was nothing of the sort. Why this case received so much attention in Nicaragua was not only because Eric was an American, but that she was well known to the country of Nicaragua. The earlier comments made by people regarding Nicaragua are disturbing and inconsistant with what I had found when traveling there. It almost seemed like Dateline was trying to demonize this poor girls mother who had lost her child. I don't know if Eric was or was not guilty, but I do not think Dateline did this story justice. I was in San Juan Del Sur after the murder and there were rumors being spread throughout the town that may or may not be true. I think to do the story justice, both sides should have been considered and that was not done in this case. Nicaragua is 99% Catholic and there religion is the most sacred thing to them. One thing that is troubling is that Eric commented that the reason he was asked to be a pall bearer was that they were trying to set him up. I find that hard to believe that the family would let Eric carry their daughters casket just to set him up and disgrace her memory. I believe they really thought Eric had some involvment in their daughters murder after the funeral, not before. Whether their beliefs were true or not is something we will never know for sure. Dateline seemed to make this more of a hate issue between cultures than what it really was, a family that lost their daughter and felt Eric had some involvment in her death. I think Dateline should do a more thorough investigation of this case.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

Keith Morrison is obviously not intending to show American people the truth and facts, but to clear a rich boy from something nobody only Eric knows if he was a part of or not. NBC has failed to illustrate what Doris' family is going through and selfishly focused on "poor little Eric".

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

I was extremely disappointed with Dateline. The interview was biased nor had they thoroughly investigated before presenting the facts. I am not accusing E. Volz, I'm merely saying that a terrible injustice has been done by the show. A crime has been committed, a young woman brutally murdered. The entire hour of the show was dedicated to Volz, he's alive. What about the young woman? They showed no compassion for Doris. Even at the end of the show, they said nothing of her. They just discussed him taking a hot shower and having the best sleep of his life. I was appalled not only by the lack of compassion from Volz who dated her but also the lack of regard on behalf of Dateline. American or not, she was human, a life, deserving of so much more. Care to report or follow up on bringing her murderer to justice, if it isn't Volz?
Shame on Dateline and Keith Morrison. I'm extremely disappointed.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

If any American values his or her freedom, then Nicaragua is not a place to go. And let's face it, the anti-American sentiment by Nicaragua was already in place before the Volz case. I wouldn't recommend travelling to any Latin American country. Many of their citizens (at least)are silent racists ready for "stories" to unfold, so they can prey on Americans. Iceland is a great place to visit and they speak English and love Americans! Hmmm, what a novel thought.

Is Eric Volz in jail because of Nicaraguan anger at America?

although it may be easy to render sympathy for mr volz, as i do, what is somewhat unclear is his thought process, guilty or not what prevented him from leaving the country immediately the news was known? his personality may be flawed, whatever the case his BMOC mentality did not serve him well
