Hi I watched your case on Eric Volz I do not think he committed this crime I believe the other person that was arrested by Nicaraguan police to be guilty. And I also think that the people of Nicaragua to be very Anti-American and this is there way of showing it by putting an innocent man behind bars. I think the US needs to get him out of that country or even use the military and get him out. That is what I believe

Why don't we get involved more in this situation. It's almost, as if, Eric is being held hostage. How can we allow the country of Nicaragua to do this to one of our own. This does set a precedence for other countries to get away with this. I have watched this story about Eric and have found it astonishingly haunting. I have visited Nicaragua myself not so long ago, and alone. During my visit I had many concern's about my safety. I don't believe that he did it. I think that had his trial been here in the United States it would have all gone the way it should have went and he would have been found innocent. Wow, I've never seen someone railroaded in real life as badly as this case. I do however know how to solve this case and get Eric out of prison. The main eye witness is no doubt, a son or family member of a very influential and powerful person in that community. Think of all the facts behind the eye witness first, being arrested... along with the other man who was convicted. 1 man gets immunity while the other is hung out to dry... suddenly adding Eric as a suspect in place of this eye witness. Check the judges bank account records. I believe she was bribed from this influential family member of the eye witness. The victums family was very poor from all the news clips I saw.... so how does a poverty stricten family get the funds to create a blog on the internet scrictly to smutting Eric's reputation? Whoever is running this blog, is no doubt the same money source that bribed the judge and is no doubt connected to the family member of this Eye Witness. This is all circumstancial but makes alot more sense then the meaningless circumstancial evidence they decided to use to find Eric guilty. Look into these facts and I have no doubt in my mind you will find someone trying to cover up for this Eye Witness.... bribing a judge and quickly sticking Eric in a place that could very well end his life... and possibly this story. We need to save Eric before the worst happens and justice is no longer an option. Just look into this and I believe you should find what you're after.

My boyfriend and I watched the show about Eric Volz tonight. We were both horrified at the lack of justice this young man received. If he is not freed by the three judges in charge of the appeal, every person in the world should boycott the country. If a single judge is allowed to toss out all defense evidence, and accept the pathetic word of one person who might well be the killer, who can be safe traveling in the country? This show convinced me to never travel there, sorry to say, as I'm a world traveler and have been to 62 countries. I don't feel anyone would be safe there is such an injustice can occur. It was so clear that the young man was totally railroaded. He could have easily fled the country, but instead, was grieving and went to try and help the family. We were appalled at the original judge, the mother of the victim, and the other hysterical bystanders. Doesn't the mother want the true killer of her beautiful daughter to pay for the crime? How could all the evidence be thrown out of court? Ten people will not all lie for one person -- instead, they would be disgusted if that young man had asked them to lie on his behalf. If you watch the video that Dateline showed in which Eric is being taken to a cop car, it appears that the officer who grabs Eric by the shirt at his right shoulder could be the source of the scratches on Eric's shoulder. In the clip I saw, Eric is wearing a dark t-shirt and a flak jacket. An officer forcefully grabs Eric's shirt at the right shoulder, pulling the shirt down to about the height of Eric's shoulder blade.

I do not feel that Eric is guilty of anything except being in the wrong country at the wrong time. There is no evidence at all to support this guilty plea. I feel that the Judge was inappropriate in her findings and, unfortnately, feel that this all boiled down to finding the American guilty. With a prosecutor and judge like this, no one stands a chance to win any cases here. To throw out more evidence than what was even found at the crime scene is barbaric. We should all stand behind Eric and do something to get him out of jail before they eventually try to murder him. I definitely support Eric and plan to visit his website.

It brought back some wonderful memories that are now changed. I agree with the comment on your blog from "A Mad Nicaraguan" I just returned last month after spending 4 weeks in Nicaragua,one of those weeks in the heart of San Juan Del Sur. While there I must admit I never heard one word about the case. I'm sure the locals were talking about it but never to this Gringo. I really fell in love with the country and the people everywhere I went. I traveled as a single male staying in ordinary type hotels not in the 4 star hotels even though I could have if I wanted to. I wanted to get to know and talk with the regular people as was considering spending 4 or 5 months a year there. However, after watching what happens in their justice system I am giving those plans a second and third thought. From the evidence presented on TV I fail to understand how he could have been convicted. As I said I must agree with the reasoning on :Mad Nicaraguan and his reasoning. I believe that any American seeing your show may think twice now before spending time like I did there.

One: The supposed,current boyfriend was never interviewed, shown, and, for that matter may not even exist(of course unless I missed that part).Two: Having myself lived in Nicaragua in 1997, the mother and aunt's dress and accessories doesn't coincide with their social and economical status. My family looks for news on our country to see what is going ever day, which we usually find on the spanish news stations. But no not tonight...tonight dateline spend there time to cover a story about Nicaragua, but why was this story covered in the first place because it's about a white male in jail. That is the only reason!!! I watched the story and was very interested from the beginning. I believe that he did not physically kill the girl but I believe he had something to do with the murder. He never once talked about the sadness he had or that he would never ever kill anyone in general. He always talked about how he has alibi's that he was not there. I think he was involved in some way or another. He just continued to talk all about where he was, but I agree that they did not investigate the case thoroughly. We also did not hear anything about the relationship with him and the codefendant that is serving 30 years as well.

More than anything I think he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and became a lightning rod for the anti U.S. sentiments which are very real South of the border, feelings that became volatile when whipped up by the Nicaraguan press. Does the U.S. press ever go for sensationalism to sell papers? I'll bet this story sold alot of papers. How long do you think that judge would have lived if she hadn't found Eric guilty? Was she receiveing death threats? Dunno, NBC didn't cover that part of the story. My guess is the guns going off outside the courtroom during the trial were also speaking to the Judge. If you find yourselves asking why don't these people South of the Border like us, then do your homework and read the "Pinochet Files" to get an idea of the kind of unjust behaviors our government has participated in South of the Border, and to date no one has been held accountable. We have also done many wonderful things to help these countries, but one does not excuse the other. And any of us would do it if that's what it takes to determine guilt or innocence; it's not that expensive anymore. This is the obvious question. So why didn't the reporter think of it? And why didn't Eric question the cops as to DNA testing. It doesn't surprise me that this young man got what he got. Every year that I go back home I hear about these kinds of things. But honestly people that go to my country with american money feel that they have the power to do anything and if that is the case I wish that the immigration laws in my country would be enforced just like they are here. I beleive that there is probably more to the story than we know. Based on the evidence Eric had he should be freed, but it doesn't take away from the fact that he could have very easily hired someone to do it instead of him. While Eric came across as an arrogant a** on TV I still feel sorry for him. He's obviously innocent of the murder charge. For those people who claim Eric had someone kill her is crazy as well. Evidence is evidence and the facts that Dateline presented are overwhelmingly on Erics side. I watched the same story on CNN today and I get the feeling that Nicaragua is starting to feel the pressure. I am writing about the story of Eric Voltz. I left wondering a few things...did Eric have on his person the cell phone in particular that the reports were about? I think he is a very brite individual and could have had the cell phone records all set up for a good defense. I would like to know more about what the boy/boys shared that stated that they were paid to carry some boxes from the shop. What time was that? Did they say it WAS Eric? What was the mood? What all did they see? I think they could add a great deal more info. .WHY wern't DNA test done? There had to be DNA EVERYWHERE, fingernails, semen, pubic hairs, etc.Further dialog with the car rental agency as to who picked up the car, when, etc...A really detail going over the car would have helped. To hear the condition of the dead girl, I have to believe that the torture they put her through...all the wrappings that was used to tie her up,etc....that DNA should be all over the place!!! What kinds of information did they get from the other man they arrested? Where was he? What was he doing? We didn't hear much of what he had to say for himself. Eric Stolz seemed to be a very arrogant unlikable guy, so full of himself and I was expecting him to be guilty...but...with face-to-face eye-witnesses? How can that have possibly happened? I have to assume the testing facilities are not available in Nicaragua or the evidence is not admittable in this court. i lived in costa rica (Guanacaste) for one and a half years. Once we visited Nicaragua. It was an experience I will never forget. We needed a body guard even to get across the border. The crossing was not cheap. It took a day to get in and it wasnt even a busy border crossing. Once we did get in we were told by our body guard that it was a three day visa and that we could not go back before the three days were up. We had planned on an over night and packed for one. I was told to keep a low profile and to not tell people we were from the USA. Once at a mini market of sorts a person came up to us and asked if we were Americans, I said yes, to the shegrins of my companions. The people in the mini-market were so happy to meet us and to tell people from America that this country welcomed them. Now, to Eric, it appears to me that this man did act with disrespect to the countries people and culture. He was a foolish boy. It appears to me that here in the USA we need to remember that we are doing these same things to others that are from war zone, terrorists countries. I am not an advocate of Americanism's but Eric was a rude, uncouth ambassador for the rest of us who wish to visit.

well, Mr. Volz is a little unlikeable, but one has to take into account that he is probably worn out from his misadventure. Young men that age tend to be cocky, and when you are in a situation, you need to learn to be a little more humble, and not so arrogant. That, however, does not equal murder. This is such an easy case, dig her up and do the DNA, what all of us "Americans" are used to is that we can, or even have the right to, bully our system on another government. I say this program last night, 08/23/07. From what was shown Eric Volz does look innocent. But we are getting one side of this woman's death and the aftermath. Eric's website states that a ruling from the appeals court should have been issued by now. I have been looking for anything mentioning this, including the newspaper El Nuevo Diario, but still nothing.

Regarding Eric's scratches on his shoulder, I believe it is entirely possible that the casket he was carrying caused the marks, just like he has maintained. Having lifted weights, like a calf extension with the pads on the shoulders, many a time I have come home with marks on my shoulders that have looked exactly like what Eric had. Totally possible.

Keep praying for Eric. He needs them.

The case is not about whether we approve of Eric or how he comes across to us, arrogance or not. The case is about hard facts which he provided. The justice system has no basis for holding him. They cannot prove he didn't do but they also cannot prove that he DID do it. Of course it is a tragedy what happened to Doris. It shouldn't have happened. But there is no evidence to justify holding Eric.

And one more little detail I forgot, Dateline does not tell you that there was a first judge, who handled the case, and was replaced by a lady judge. The first judge is being investigated for several cases of corruption where he was allegedly bribed. Tony D'Souza (reporter fellow interviewed by Morrison) admits that there is strong evidence that Eric offered money, that is what pissed the people of San Juan. And what really pissed people from San juan was the fact that Eric showed up with hired guns from another country inside the courtroom, try to do that in the US, show up with mexican soldiers or bodyguards with AK47s in a Los Angeles courthouse, and see what will happen to you. The first judge refused to turn the file over to the second judge and kept it breaking the law for several weeks.

This is typical of a foreigner caught doing "nothing wrong" in Mexico or some other Latin American Country, etc. This is the process..... they know you are innocent, but will not let you go until your family has no more money and they can verify it. For all of you Americans who have been trailing the twisted words of the media, I live in San Juan del Sur, and I have lived here for the past seven years. I am American, originally from Northern California. I know Eric and knew Doris personally. For those of you who have never even traveled out of the United States, please save your breath when talking about the "anti- american" attitude here in Nicaragua. I am married to a Nica who I have been with for years. I am accepted as family everywhere I go. I work in a school outside of San Juan in the 'campo' which is where you would generally find the most "anti- american" Nicas, and never once have I experienced any "anti-american attitude" with the exception of higher prices which are easily talked down (everyone needs to make a living). This town is extremely small. Everyone is in everyone else's daily drama. Everyone knows each other, we are a very tight-knit community. The first Nicaraguan man that was convicted and released still walks the streets as a free man. He works in his aunt's surf shop. I see him daily. Don't get it wrong, most people want nothing to do with him, and they have not cleared him of the crime in their minds. But let me ask you this, what would you do if your daughter was brutally raped, murdered, and bound by the wrists and ankles as if she were some animal? Secondly, let's flip the situation, what if it was some immigrant (let me remind you that the majority of U.S. citizens think are here taking up our "precious" jobs) who was convicted of the crime? Would that make it any different? I am not saying Eric is guilty, nor am I saying he is innocent. The truth is, even here, no one knows who was involved and who wasn't, a part from Eric, "Rosita", and "Krusty"- and anyone else who may have been involved. Doris was a kind, intelligent woman, who deserved only the best. When the courts accepted Eric's appeal, and not "Rosita's" it makes it look like a lot like bribery and pressure from the States. "Rosita" has never and will never have a dime, therefore he will rot in prison. If in fact he is guilty, that is what he deserves. I hope that Eric truly is innocent. I hope that he was wrongfully imprisoned and they are not releasing a murderer. What a tragedy it would be if, for the ignorance of the U.S., a murderer was left to live a free life. I only have one question for Eric, why are you so emotionally detached from what happened? When claiming your innocence, why have you never once mentioned your love or sympathy for her? On the other side of things, what mother would want to believe her son is a murderer? What friend would want to believe he is a murderer? How far would you go to protect your loved one? Of course you're going to believe it when he says he's innocent. Lastly, I want to let you all know the crime scene investigation is no where near up to standards here, in Nicaragua. There is no DNA testing, instead they use blood type- and how broad is that? Eric did have finger nail scratches or him arms and back. I have seen the photographs. Where did they come from? Don't be so narrow minded. I can reasonably look at both sides of this situation. Eric never seemed like a harmful person to me. In the end, I hope justice is served- whatever that may entail.

I believe Eric is innocent. The problem is that corruption pervades sandinistas judges, sandinista supreme court of Justice (I would say instead " of corruption"). In Nicaragua, there is no justice since Ortega took over the presidency in 2007. Judges, the Supreme Court, and all legal authorities have become loyal and faithfull to Ortega, who still hates American (or Nicaraguans that fled sandinista's revolution in the 80s to the U.S.) I wouldn't be surprised if Ortega ordered the judge to condemn Eric in order to get some money to free him later (those are Ortega's corrupted tactics to get money from hostages, narco-traffic, political adversaries, or innocent americans, and nicaraguans living in the U.S. I wouldn't recommend any US citizen go to Nicaragua until Ortega leaves power (for your knowledge Ortega is trying to get reelected forever, as Hugo Chavez from Venezuela did it recently).

I've been watching this trial from the beginning. I live in Costa Rica and justice is practically the same here. There are laws, but nobody abides by them. "gringos" don't have a chance regarding justice anywhere in the Central American countries. Corruption is a key word in their vocabulary, but, then again, the US doesn't have clean hands.
When I first saw this case, I saw these scratch marks on his shoulder, they were fresh and had the makings that they were from fingernails. His explanation of how those scratch marks got there was lame, to say the least. He said he got them from carrying her coffin. Hmmm, unless she reached out from inside the coffin, I doubt it. There was video of him carrying the coffin and I didn't see any sharp objects that could have caused those marks. These people are nieve to a point but not blindly so. Tell me the truth of how those marks got there and he might be released. The judge didn't buy the "scratched while carrying the coffin excuse"......do you?

Even though I believe the evidence and the whole trial was mismanaged by the Nicaraguan judicial system, a part of me thinks Eric was involved in her murder somehow. Those scratches on his body...they are like the victim crying for help. From what I have read about this case it does appear that Eric V. is innocent.

However, what amazes me reading these comments is how naive some of the comments posted here are. Before I go on, a point of clarification, not every country in the world operates on the assumption of innocence. I believe that in the French legal system you are guilty until you prove your innocence.

It is important that people understand that when you travel outside your home country you are subject to the laws of the country in which you are travelling. Sometimes these systems are good, other times they are not. It pays to do your research before you go. On a similar note it is highly unlikely that your own government can do much to help you. So, be careful when you leave home.

Eric Volz's situation is an ever constant reminder of what American's have to endure when striving to enjoy and do good for another country. I happened to be in Nicaragua during this whole deal. Nicaragua is governed by Napoleonic Code of law; this essentially means that a person is GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. There seemed to be enough circumstancial evidence to convict Mr. Volz, but then again, Nicaraguan law is not transparent enough when held to U.S. standards. All of Mr. Volz alibis failed. His mother was smart enough and contacted all the right people to make this issue a POLITICAL issue. For the last 17 years, Nicaragua has tried for years to comply to every political and economic demand imposed by the United States, therefore, the Nicaraguan government, at the request and increasing pressure of U.S. officials there, agreed to "release" Mr. Volz to avoid political backlash and prevent the early death of American and European tourism in the country. The bottom line is that the investigation was not over. The dismissal of Mr. Volz was sudden and took Nicaraguans by surprise. The judges who set him free now have to explain to the Nicaraguan people why Mr. Volz was given the "get out of jail free" card. A woman was murdered. Mr. Volz knows the killers, but, as he said on the show " it is not the job of a civilian family (his own) to say who the killers are". I'm happy for Mr. Volz. He's a free man whether he's guilty or not.

My understanding of the case is that the prosecution alleged that Eric physically participated in the murder. If that is what is alleged, then the whole case is a sham because the proof clearly shows that Eric was in Managua.

I think one can also have a very good idea of Eric's guilt or innocence by simply reading his many letters to his friends and family.

Moral of the story? Avoid countries with poor judicial systems.

Wow! Whether Eric is guilty or not, it's apparent that he thinks the world is his playground. BUT wake up America....it's not!!! Just because you're white and may have dollars, doesn't meant that you deserve better treatment ANYWHERE! This guy clearly received better treatment in prison than most prisoners around the world. He wasn't tortured, starved, raped or killed. He actually looked like he had a few pounds to easily spare when he was released. I highly doubt that is typical for other prisoners in Nicaragua. I feel extremely bad for the young girl's family and especially mother. Get over the fact that Eric had to eat beans and rice in prison, and think about the people who lost something they can never get back. It's time for Keith Morrison to investigate the Injustice in the American system, he doesn't have to travel far to discover injustice and ignorance. The Court system and judges in the USA are neither more inteligent nor more fair and balance than their equivalent in Nicaragua or Turkey (Midnight Express). I am troubled by the earlier comments made on this blog. First of all I don't think all the facts about this case were revealed by Dateline. I want to ask Dateline first why they chose to exclude the work history of Doris. This woman was a popular model in Central America and had a thriving business in San Juan Del Sur that catered to foreigners. They seem to portray her as this poor local when in fact she was nothing of the sort. Why this case received so much attention in Nicaragua was not only because Eric was an American, but that she was well known to the country of Nicaragua. The earlier comments made by people regarding Nicaragua are disturbing and inconsistant with what I had found when traveling there. It almost seemed like Dateline was trying to demonize this poor girls mother who had lost her child. I don't know if Eric was or was not guilty, but I do not think Dateline did this story justice. I was in San Juan Del Sur after the murder and there were rumors being spread throughout the town that may or may not be true. I think to do the story justice, both sides should have been considered and that was not done in this case. Nicaragua is 99% Catholic and there religion is the most sacred thing to them. One thing that is troubling is that Eric commented that the reason he was asked to be a pall bearer was that they were trying to set him up. I find that hard to believe that the family would let Eric carry their daughters casket just to set him up and disgrace her memory. I believe they really thought Eric had some involvment in their daughters murder after the funeral, not before. Whether their beliefs were true or not is something we will never know for sure. Dateline seemed to make this more of a hate issue between cultures than what it really was, a family that lost their daughter and felt Eric had some involvment in her death. I think Dateline should do a more thorough investigation of this case.

I was extremely disappointed with Dateline. The interview was biased nor had they thoroughly investigated before presenting the facts. I am not accusing E. Volz, I'm merely saying that a terrible injustice has been done by the show. A crime has been committed, a young woman brutally murdered. The entire hour of the show was dedicated to Volz, he's alive. What about the young woman? They showed no compassion for Doris. Even at the end of the show, they said nothing of her. They just discussed him taking a hot shower and having the best sleep of his life.
