A story of evil -- and its flip side

In 30 years of covering crime, cops and courts, I've never heard a story so evil: a 22-year-old woman is abducted and taken to a "party" where she is humiliated, abused, gang raped and strangled. At least two dozen of her so-called friends are at this "party," but no one intervenes on her behalf. Her naked and battered body is dumped in a snowdrift off the interstate, and for 25 long years, no one goes to the police. That's the thumbnail sketch of Janet Chandler's murder, and it is so gruesome it makes you want to stop believing in the decency of human beings.

But on the flip side of this horror is one of the most affirming stories about the human spirit that I've ever covered: a college professor and a group of students at Janet Chandler's old college make a documentary about her case, and spark a new police investigation. A tenacious cold case team works more than two years to track down the killers, and cracks the decades-old conspiracy of silence. Then Assistant Michigan Attorney General Donna Pendergast and the prosecution stepped up to put on a bullet-proof court case, and by late 2007, six people had been convicted of Janet Chandler's 1979 murder. There is a measure of justice for Janet today, but only because dozens of people worked in harmony for years to to win that justice.

For the students and the cold case team, the Janet Chandler investigation was a life-changing experience. And correspondent Victoria Corderi and I agree that covering their work has deeply affected us as well. We both stand in awe of the dignity of Jim and Glenna Chandler, who bore their overwhelming grief with the help of their deep faith, and their own personal courage. We were impressed by the determination and creativity of former Hope College professor David Schock, who helped turn a class project into a major prosecution.

The inspiration to do the documentary came to him when a former Holland police detective gave a guest lecture to his class. Schock asked him if there was "one that got away," a case the cop wished they had solved. He answered, "Janet Chandler."

That sent Schock and his students off on a journey that ended with six people being convicted of Chandler's murder. Now Schock has devoted himself full-time to telling cold case stories, in the hopes of tracking down more killers. We have posted a link to his site: delayedjustice.com.

There were others besides Schock and his students who were critical to making a new investigation a reality. Holland Chief of Police John Kruithoff and retired Detective Jim Fairbanks both pushed hard to get the Chandler case back on the front burner. And we would be remiss if we did not heap some well-deserved praise on the cold case team itself, made up of detectives from the Michigan State Police and the Holland City Police. They traveled to 19 states and worked for more than two years to break the Janet Chandler case.

When progress was slow, the team resisted the easy way out. They could have pulled the plug on this case and moved on to something a little easier, but they didn't. They kept "turning over rocks," as Lt. John Slenk said. The smart and skillful interrogations conducted by Det. Geoff Flohr played a big role in bringing the killers to justice, and you can see more of Flohr in action on this site.

We in the press cover many, many stories where we are compelled to report that "the system" didn't work. Here is a case where it worked in a spectacular, if belated, fashion. Victoria Corderi and I would like to thank all of the people who helped us bring this story to Dateline, especially our colleagues at WOOD-TV-8 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

This story is a story we won't forget. It showed us the face of evil, and the power of faith.

I am OUTRAGED that the two girls-now women-who witnessed and hide the truth from everyone all these years were not held responsible.  It was a horrific thing to have witnessed and I am certain they feared the same fate BUT how did they not go to police anyway?  I think they should be in jail themselves.  The one women showed no remorse what so ever.  Have they no soul?

As far as those men go...the chair would be too good for them.
What is mind blowing, is that the women that watched this, and never said anything, were let off the hook.  One of the two seemed to feel zero remorse.  No way should she get off scott free.  I am glad the most of the horrible evil people were caught and sentenced.
My heart goes out to the Chandler's family.  My prayers also go out the the entire Chandler's.  I am pleased that justice has been served after all these long years and though Janet cannot be brought back, I think that justice has been served.

I cannot believe that one can agree to and witness the death of a friend, just because they are jealous of them.  When you have such friends you do not want any enemies, and I think that some people, their hearts are dark, and they have no mercy.  I could nothave agreed to and witnessed such an incident with even my enemy and keep my mouth shut.  I would have reported it to the police.

I would give a word of advise to all.  Please remember that no one deserves to die by killing them, let everyone die from natural causes.  Please consider that life was given to us not to be taken from us by killings.

My best wishes go to the Chandlers.

My God give you the strength you need to continue living, and congratulations on celebrating your 45th wedding anniversary.
Typical American justice...four men get life sentences and the female who instigated the whole sordid torture-murder lives a free life.
In 1979 I was 24 years old. At that age, I also had relationships with men I probably should not have; my lifestyle was not what my parents would have wanted, and I am very sure that now, looking back, that I was stupid and naive and that I placed myself in harms way more times than I wish to remember. But I was not betrayed, raped,  tortured and killed, set-up  by my girlfriends and set upon by my very own lovers, as was this young girl.

This child-woman did not deserve to die the way she did. The parents, in the quest for justice, also had to learn about the seedier side of their long-dead daughter, more heartbreak for this old couple. But the one horrific thing I cannot get over is that the two women interviewed as witnesses and possible participants seemed dully unnaffected and  even matter-of-fact. Neither of these paragons of virtue seemed very sorry nor upset. Their fear of retribution was a lame explantion , pathetic and 25 years too late. But hey, they got on TV, right?
It's very sad story. I mean, I feel like Janet was my friend and I just lost my friend today. Most importantly it's to bad that Cheri and Diane couldn't be charged with something. How anyone cheer on such an ugly act? Do they realize what kind of person that made them out to be to sing "yeah rape heer"? They are rapist themself and I hope what ever town or state they live in passes judgement again them, feel a little something of that terrible night Janet did on her last 2 days here. I agree with the closer Flohr they won't scared they help with the plan, they couldn't tell with out spilling the beans on themselves first.
I was a classmate and fellow music student with Jan.  We sang together in the Chapel Choir.  Her murder was a mystery to me, and every time I traveled the section of highway where her body was found, I wondered what really happened; I wondered if her killer would not be revealed until Judgement Day.  We are grateful to all those who, after all these years, spent so much time and effort digging up the truth which had been buried for so long.  Yet I agree with her father's statement that he felt not that justice had been done (how does one pay for such a horrible crime?) but that some closure had been achieved.  Thank you for telling her story.
Sadly the core of this story was missing. I live in West Michigan. Why were so many security guards involved in the Chandler rape and murder. They were hired thugs from the notorious Wackenhut strike-breaking agency. Where did the rape take place, a house provided by the visciously anti-union chemical company being struck. These people were not ordinary out-of-Holland localcitizens. Wackenhut has a reputation for hiring ex-cons, hired thugs and goons to do this type work, as has been the case for these type of situations over the last century. History proves over and over again that Usually only the most depraved are willing to do this kind of work.  If they had not been brought into the city, none of this would have happened. A girl would still be alive. I've been working on this part of the story for severel months. It is a potential Pulitzer. Sad, very sad to see such gaping holes in your coverage. Shoddy and shallow journalism for a normally superb program. Almost a conspiracy of silence. Had to e. Know it won't be published but gave it a try.
What an appalling story!! How could they keep silent for so long - why couldn't they for one minute think of her parents, not knowing for 28 yrs. who did this horrible thing to their daughter!
This story defies comprehension.  How could so many people witness or know about such a horrific crime and remain silent for years.  To think that such a number of people lacked any conscience or guilt, never spoke out or offered even an anonymous contact to the authorities staggers the imagination.  There lies an even more fascinating story here of how and why all of these people remained silent for so long.  How many people did they tell who also didn't tell.
Stephen King couldn't write a more horrific story.
How can anyone live for 25 years and never feel guilty enough to call the police?  Just like Janet's family thought about her daily it seems that the murderers (everyone in that house) should have been thinking of her as well. I have never heard of anything like this before. Thank God that her family knows what happened.
I seen the show and when they mentioned the name Robert Lynch it floored me because i knew a Robert Lynch when i was very young and back then he was quite a bad child and i was wondering if it was the same person, this goes back to 1949 in Uniondale Long Island New York, for some reason i feel it's the same Robert Lynch, he was evil and always getting us into trouble and our parents forbid us to play with him. Could someone please reply to me about if it is the same person from Uniondale, N.Y.
It's incomprehensible that the two women could have kept quiet for such a long time. I understand very well that they must have been afraid to be 'the next one' - but they could have called anonymously. Seeing them showing no remorse says a lot about their character. I too am the mom of a murdered daughter -shot and burned beyond recognition- and hope that my husband and me don't have to wait that long before we get some sort of closure.

Ria Coesel - mom of Anke Furber.
This story defies the rational mind! I can not stop thinking that I was about this girls age in 79. How could other human beings conjure up something so evil? The only thing I can think of is that some of these people had to have had a criminal record to do such a horrendous thing.

I've never heard of anything this diabolical in all my life. How did this many people (both men and women)think up and agree upon something so perverted?

The women involved in this just floor me. Not one of them would call the authorities to help? They were just as cruel as the men. The heavy set lady at least acted like she was a little sorry. The other one was totally in denial. How did these women get away with not doing time in prison for holding back information?
And Laurie Swank I can't even wrap my mind around someone (a woman) that would be responsible for something that horrific.
The small minded pettiness and jealousy is weirder then anything I've ever heard of, even in a movie plot. They were/are without consciense.

My heart goes out to her parents who have suffered all these years. The Good News is that someday Chandlers will be reunited with their daughter in a place where all sorrow and tears will be wiped away forever.
To the Chandler parents: May God bless you with closure and much peace.
No Michael Johnson, that wasn't the core of the story.       What did not get shown on Dateline NBC was the police reports of early interviews of the suspects. What came up in trial testimony:  Cheryl "no remorse" Ruiz was interviewed by the police shortly after the murder.  Cheryl was all excited that she and Tony Williams were living together, in fact at the time of the interview, she and Tony were looking for a new place to live.  Cheryl's cousin is a news anchor at WOOD-TV-8.  Her name is Rachael Ruiz
I am not in any way convinced that the two girls who witnessed this horrific crime feared the same fate, they knew exactly what was going to happen before it happened. They're trying to put the blame off on someone else because they're ashamed of themselves for being such horrible human beings. Everyone who was in that room should have been charged and convicted, the people in that room that night came there for a purpose nobody MADE them show up that night they knew where they were going, and what was going to happen there.
I worked at Blue Mill Inn in 1979. i was just 17yrs old and was a maid on weekends. i would see Janet in the morning as she was leaving and i was coming to work. I remember that weekend. I was stunned. I never returned to work. I was never interviewed by the police either. I remember the guards that stayed there and they were disgusting. They would cat call me and ask me to hang out with them. Thank God i never did. It is a strange feeling to think i may have been involved. I know for a fact that i could not have kept quiet for 27 yrs. Now the crazy part. I have lived at my present address for 20yrs with my husband and children. I saw Cheryl Ruiz interview on another show earlier in the year before the trial. I almost passed out. She has been my neighbor for years. Her yard butt's up to mine. I am sooooooooo disgusted that i can't go outside when she is there. I have never seen any remorse either. She has lived like nothing ever happened. She seems to LOVE the attention. I am so upset we are putting up a 6ft fence so that we can block the view. I know she has already killed several plants in my yard and i don't trust her as far as i can spit. The calm of our neighborhood has changed. Holland is a peaceful saft place to be. And of all places i chose to live, it's next to a horrible person that must have crossed my path 27 yrs. ago. I really thought she would go to prison as well. How do they let her live her life as if nothing happened? I really don't understand. I wish i didn't have to get a knot in my stomach every time i look outside. I did get interviewed by the HPD about 2 yrs ago. I didn't recognize Cheryl from the pictures, but again, I didn't hang out with them at all. I really wish Janet had trusted her gut, because i'm sure she knew these people where bad news. I'm just thankful God kept me safe. God Bless you Chandler family. You deserve the peace and hope of tomarrow. I am sorry all those involved did not get punished. But they too will meet their maker one day, and the ultimate judgement will be made. In the mean time I get to look at her everyday. Thanks
It's sad to know that people could do this to others and live with themselves over so many years.  I hope that those two women can make themselves right at home in hell, cause that's were they should spend the rest of their days. I have NO feelings for these sick women (if you could even call them women) watching another women be raped the way she was.  I hope they feel Janet’s pain everyday of their evil, dark, soulless lives.
I feel as most here do.  The company that hired Waken-Hut guards and Waken-Hut should be charged.  I know the CEOs are probably dead by now but, someone should be held accountable.  The two women that skated to should be doing some prison time too.
Undeciced...Having been involved with Cheri I can only say the interview was an act. The real Cheri would wake up in he middle of the night screaming with nightmares that I beleive will haunt her for the rest of her life. Naming her cousin who is a newscaster is wrong. I won't judge but Cheri has tried to put up a wall around herself and Sasha is the only thing that is close to her. Try to understand that she is not right and needs a lot of professional help..
Wackenhut guards are notorious... They've been caught raping female inmates, some underage, at prison they run in Texas and N. Mexico. It does seem irresponsible to leave out that part from the program, if the company that made Thalidomide were caught marketing another dangerous drug you'd mention the Thalidomide thing, right?
In 1979 I turned 21 years old that August and I can tell you that I would NEVER do what those girls did to their so called friend - not even to my worst enemy if I had one.  No matter how much alcohol or drugs I had consumed would have held me back from going to the authorities if I had witnessed it either, nor would fear.  May they ALL burn in HELL!!
Being from Holland, I have always held such sadness in my heart for Janet and her family.  I feel all who knew anything at all about Janet's murder and did nothing should fry. I hope the next cold case solved in Holland is the Rick and Gail Brink murders.  I worked with them both.
This story is just horible. I can believe what today has become let alone then. It is scarey anymore to think if you even leave you home or you dont even have to leave your home anymore to be kidnapped or beaten. People are cruel and there is no reason for this. I am shocked that these woman did not get anything. I believe you should get something for covering up a murder. This world is horrible and you question humanity anymore.
To be honest, I'm getting sick and tired of Dateline's puerile obsession with beautiful young women being raped and murdered. Every week it's the same story about a rape or murder involving a pretty white girl or woman. Give it a rest, Dateline. These crimes are awful but your constant focus on these particular victims make you almost as perverted and sick as the murderers. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if many would-be murderers watched your show every week to get off on the female victims you showcase often. Whether you realize it or not DATELINE is actually helping to create future serial killers and sex offenders. Think about that, learn to become a more responsible media, and please stop sensationalizing these women's deaths. Thank you.
I just saw the repeat of this story on msnbc and share with everyone the pity, questions, and horror at what happened to Janet. Of particular interest is what Janet's fellow hotel worker, Lisa Cordero says above in this comment section. I often hear the famous true crime writer Ann Rule (The Stranger Beside Me) comment on the socio pathology of serial murderers but the Janet Chandler case rivals even those in being so incomprehensible.
well, you will not believe what has been happening in the ole' neighborhood. cheri has read my comment and is none too happy. she has decided to harrass me on a daily basis. she swears at me and my family from her yard, calling me an fing b---- in front of my children. it got so bad i had to call the police. they went and talked to her and much to my surprise i started the whole "discussion" by calling her a b----- and flipping her off. she also said i held a poster board up that said "MURDERER" wow.... this just did not happen. i'm also a racist according to cheri. i'm in a mixed marriage, and my children are 1/2 and 1/2. so, this just doesn't fly. i have been advised to get a personal protection order against her as she has been seen in my driveway taking pictures of my vehicles and plate numbers. it was only 7 hrs after the police left with her agreeing to not bother us if we don't bother her, that she was swearing at me again from the backyard as i was studying. she was screaming in her house like a crazy person and called me a "cat woman" but i'm not a "woman" so, "cat it" huh???? i really think she has flipped. she said the police have my name, msnbc and nbc have my name. so what??? it is going to be a long summer....
What a piece of work these females are they arent really women are they? its not just USA even in Australia I have seen females get off as these witches plead fear! They should be disgusted with themselves and their witholding doesnt show anything more than a leopard doesnt change its spots as for the neighbour now being terrorized give her heaps she is a gutless piece of garbage . Dont put up with it ring the police the media and show her for what she truly is I saw this story early this morning on Australian television and was appalled , thats why I looked this case up as I thought my brain hadnt got it right so early!
I can't believe people can be so wicked and callous.  My heart goes out to Janet's family and hope she is resting peacefully in Heaven
I lived in Holland when the murder happened.  It was such a shock.  Holland is a peaceful and law-abiding place, a town with many churches.  I never expected that this case would be solved, as I'd thought, like a lot of people did, that it was a transient who did it and left no evidence. I'm glad it was solved and that the family can have some peace.
I just got one of those fraudulent emails about winning a lottery in a foreign country.  I'd like to send you the email so you can track it down for your investigative reporting.

MEMO ADDRESSED TO THE UNITED STATES SENATE

I am a citizen of the United States and have been addressing several Senators with the issues and problems to follow
including Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama as well as several others and will in the near future be speaking in front of
you all because of Americans being held hostage by Navy personnel from Great Lakes Navy base as well as by
veterans used to Stalk and intimidate by the abuse of Power of the IRS and the United States Dept. of Justice. I
have been taken out of and kept from employment by them as they attempt a hostile search for money, i have my
phones tapped and computer hacked by government personnel spending alot of government budget following me
everyday for at least 8 months, all my family and past associates has been paid by them to create some ftctious story
because of a conspiracy, initated by the FBI from Chicago and brought to Wisconsin. All of this is a clear violation of
my Civil Rights and also the rights of my daughter who has been questioned and harrassed at school by them, she
is 5 years old. I have had to replace my computer 3 times because they are camped upstairs and i listen to them thru
the vents as they call themselves strategizing but not very well if I hear your every attempt to play on American
citizens. My family has had their cars as well as i have tampered by them in and attempt to get us or me to spend
money, they have raised bills above normal, been in my garage leaving lights on in an order to do so stopped my
emails from reaching their intended destinations and faked as the recipient, they have acted as operators and
fake being the person I called on the other line, I have been told by the police that they would not do anything
because they know who it is which is fither showing the attempt to keep me hostage. I have filed lawsuits and will
continue because I believe even that was manipulated by them as everything and everyone else has been, I have
talked to the security chief after calling the Chief of Great Lakes Navybase, no cooperation, Bush is who I believe
brought this because of corrupt judges from Chicago, after I brought this out to officials. American citizens who are
not terrorist being treated as if they are, I say send some more troops to war since we have so many of them to follow
people around everyday, someone is reimbursing them for this large price tag of surviellance. I see the plan must
be to discredit or in gov. terms attempt to burn me or ruin my career because they have some corrupt people in
the government.
sincerly,

I,m trying to find your link for the unclaimed money add you talked about on july 15, please e-mail me to look for it, thanks
sorry that they did this to her, and finally justice is served
Thats' justice AMERICAN STYLE" they should get death penalty (electric chair)all of them. Why keep them alive in jail and be supported by my tax money? Good thing i wasn't part of the jurors, i would have ask death penalty, they all deserve it. The suffering of her parents and family has no price.  At least the price to be pay should be death rode.  And for this... I feel no remorse, believe me.
