Justice for Barbara

The email arrived on a Sunday morning, at 4:50 a.m.

I'm writing to you about a 25-year-old cold case from 1981 in which a woman named Barbara L. Winn was shot in the chest with a .38 Special after a violent fight.

A woman named Patty Bruce was writing about her sister-in-law, Barbara Winn, whose death in 1981 had been ruled a suicide.

The e-mail claimed Barbara had not killed herself, but that Barbara was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Aaron "Bubbie" Foster. The e-mail revealed that Foster was currently a free man, working for the St. Paul Police Department.

We receive many e-mails alleging miscarriages of justice, but there was something about this one.

There was a sense of desperation and frustration, the sense that over the years there were cries for justice, but they had fallen on deaf ears. More than anything, it seemed this family simply wanted someone to listen.

The e-mail plea ended with this:

We want justice! We are convinced that both personal politics and a web of corruption have played a role in the miscarriage of justice concerning Barbara.
We wanted to hear their whole story, from the beginning.

So we set up a camera in a quiet place in Patty's house and left it there for a couple of months. We invited anyone in Barbara's family to speak privately to the camera whenever they wanted, about anything they wished. I spent dozens of hours screening those tapes, hearing those private words. To be sure, the raw emotion is heart wrenching: anger, frustration, bitterness.

Watch Barbara Winn's son, Tyronne, sing a song for his mother.

My own research began with the day of Barbara's death. Her kids recalled that nightmarish May night back in 1981 as though it was yesterday. They all remember hearing their mother and her boyfriend, "Bubbie" Foster, arguing. There was the sound of glass breaking, and then a gunshot. The three of them ran to her room, they said, and saw Foster running out.

Tyronne, who was just 12 years old then, remembers his mother's last words were "Oh Bubbie, that hurt."

I would learn that Foster told police that Barbara had shot herself, and that her dying declaration had been for him to "get rid of the gun." That's why, he says, he took the gun from the house, drove away in Barbara's car, and tossed it out the window. Authorities believed Foster, and ruled Barbara had taken her own life.

Barbara's kids say he was lying, that he murdered their mother and covered it up. They also claim it's Foster's connection to his longtime friend, St. Paul's former police chief Bill Finney, that somehow sheltered Foster from punishment. Serious allegations, to be sure, and ones that Bill Finney adamantly denies.

Getting at the heart of this story was a tall order. It's an old crime, Foster has repeatedly denied he killed Barbara, and he's already been looked at as a suspect.

As we looked into the story, it turned out the authorities in Minnesota had decided to take a second look at the case, too. The current sheriff had asked one of his veteran investigators, Bill Snyder, to reinvestigate it. Not knowing where his investigation would lead, I asked if we could follow Snyder as he looked for new clues and new witnesses. They agreed.

Over many weeks, using a small, handheld camera, I shadowed Snyder as he dug for answers.

But this story became more than an investigation into a nearly 30-year-old cold case.

Watching those private tapes recorded in Patty's house, what struck me the most was the incredible love and respect Barbara Winn's family and friends still have her, all these years later. They are the ones who really tell this story.

A story that began with an email to a stranger.

Thank-you to Dateline and Daniel for believing Barbara's family and helping to bring Foster to justice. My prayers go out to Patty and the whole family. I know nothing will ever bring Barbara back, but I know she is smiling down on everybody!
What a wonderful job 'Dateline' did concerning the  Barbara Winn story. I applaud Patty Bruce for her persistence to bring Barbara's killer to justice. Domestic Violence is one of our countries 'dirty little secrets.'

Are you kidding me???  Even with the lack of today's technology, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the writing on the wall, unless you have someone on the Force with a good eraser!  Good for Barbara's family - they deserve the justice that's imminent.
As I watched "Justice for Barbara" I cried the entire time. Y'all did a remarkable job on getting Barb's Story out there. The info put out there, hopefully, will make people wake up and realize what is going on (or NOT) going on in our Legal System. You opened the Door.... Now it is up to a Jury to slam the Door shut. In my Heart I do believe the right thing will happen. We can not let Barb be forgotten, nor any other Domestic Violence Victims. Barb's case also is very close to my Heart because My sister Barb, was Murdered by her husband, in a fit of Domestic Violence, June 8th, 1996, in Mora, MN. He took the woosy way out and did himself in at the same time. thank You again for not letting Barb be forgotten.
Remember:
Domestic Violence KILLS

Love & Hugs
NOT
Drugs & Slugs
Hello there from SLC, Utah.  I saw your program and would like to thank you for airing this horrible injustice that took place so many years ago and continues to haunt the family of Barbara Winn. I think your program helped bring to light the true facts so that this beautiful family can finally feel justice was served.  Thank you...
It is so comforting to know that there are people who care enough about the plight of domestic violence victims to do something about it. There is finally justice for a hurting family. Here's hoping Barbara's story will help open the eyes of those who can help bring other abusers to be held responsible for their actions.
Thank You Dateline, and Daniel Slepian for all of your hard work.
I watched this show and it really disturbed and brought back memories of my own situation past/present. I am a survivor of rape as a child and domestic abuse.  I am so glad this story was told.  I know there are more similar cases just like this case. I keep asking God why dear lord is there soooo much domestic and verbal abuse in marriages when it is his first covenant?  I'm sorry for this family's loss, hopefully they are at peace.  I have a website dedicated to abuse.  I also have a poem written on youtube.com called "Triggers of Trauma".   We all need to stand together and end abuse.
I watched Dateline with great interest having lived in St. Paul most of my life. I believe Foster MURDERED Barbara becasue she wanted to end things between them. AND what loving mother after shooting herself would take the time to tell this ANIMAL to hide the gun rather then the loving mother that she was , why wouldn't she say Tell my children I Love them"..and then to have the St Paul Chief of Police Bill Finney show up at her Autopsey because he couldn't believe she was dead,Hmmmmmm, maybe going there to find info so as to protect his friend. People usually can wait to read about in the newspaper...Foster is a MURDERER who I hope ruts in jail and Finney, jump on your bike and leave town, your not wanted here either. You're both SCUM, and you both will have to answer to God in the end. It's nice knowing I won't be seeing either of you there !!!!!
I met Patty one night while I was trying to figure out myspace and wanting to start my own page for my friend who was murdered.  She told me all about Barbara and sent me on my path and continued to guide me in many ways to get the story out about my friend.  She also told me about you and how much you were helping bring in the quest for justice for Barb and her family and loved ones.  Her persistence and determination combined with your hours of investigating and belief in the system got all of you there.  I'm so excited for them.
I hope to be speaking with you someday soon about my friend.
This is a sad story and AM so pleased you took the time to listen to the Children of Barbara.
It is time for justice and I hope it comes soon.
As far as the Mpls and St Paul Pd's are concerned I knew many of the officers, many are retired now and you cannot knock a whole Pd because of one man. You have one man to blame for this cover up and he as the one in charge. Put the blame where it belongs and donlt cut the other men and women who wear the badge with pride down.
I pray that oth these men get their just punishments.
Thank you for taking the time to make this dream of Justice for Barbara a reality.  You have done a great job in telling the story.  Please continue, as they need your support now, more then ever!  Thank you again and God Bless!
Thank you for making his dream of Justice for Barbara, a reality.  Thank you for listening to Patty's cry and for doing such an incredible job telling their story.  Now that the trial has started, please keep up the great work and being a Voice for Barbara!
Not Guilty!  Shame on Dateline for jumping to conclusions and airing such a one-sided and biased account of this story.  Justice won out!
Aaron was found NOT GUILTY!  Shame on Dateline for airing such a one-sided and biased story.  Try to have some journalistic integrity next time.
