Every stranger has a secret

It's a situation that's happened to me, and I bet it's happened to you, too. Someone new moves to the neighborhood. A stranger. We drop by, say hello, maybe even drop off a meal for the new man or woman on the block. We get to talking, exchanging life stories. The stranger tells us his name, where he's from, what he does, a bit about his past. And chances are, we believe it. Why wouldn't we? Most people are honest. Aren't they?

But have you ever found yourself wondering, is it true? Is that person really who he claims to be? Have you ever suspected, when you met someone new, if perhaps the stranger was keeping something back, or embellishing something, or maybe, just maybe, making up the whole story?

Having just made a major move myself, from big city Manhattan to a small town halfway around the world, I've thought about it even more. In small towns, people generally know one another, know one another's families. There's a track record. There's history. A new person can bring excitement, and inevitably brings mystery, too. There is no context. And, as I've learned, sometimes a stranger isn't at all who he seems to be.

All these questions began when I started reporting on the death of Jean Weaver, by all accounts a warm, friendly, principled woman. She was a loving mom, loving sister and great daughter, who was looking forward to a new life as her marriage was ending. She was a woman with much to live for, whose life was cut short.

Reporting this story also made me think of that old adage that justice delayed is justice denied. I think of Jean Weaver's family, her sisters Kathy and Colleen, decent, kind, women who clearly adored their sister. When someone killed Jean, her sisters were immediately sure they knew who the killer was. But the man who they suspected fled, and they were left to wait -- for years.

They wondered where the suspect had gone. Thousands of miles away, others wondered about a new man in their midst. There were so many questions. And in the end, for all of them, there was one man who was -- and remains -- a stranger. A man they thought they knew. But, in the end, how well do we really know anyone?

"The Stranger" airs Friday, Feb. 29 at 9pm ET on Dateline NBC.

I met Jaime and Jon on a cruise last December, I was shocked and saddened to see their story on your show tonight.  I just wanted to say I hope they can put their lives back together after all this!  My prayers are with them.
This story was very interesting.  This man has ruined many lives.  Please provide a follow up on what happens.
Who was the aunt Rita whom often called the ranch.
I think that the reasons we have instincts about certain people.  They could be the nicest people in the world but you get a certain feeling when they are around, sometimes its best to go with your instincts.
Sara, We werfe out of town when this segment of Dateline aired, we had it recorded here at home. You did a very good job and so did Cathy Singer putting this all together. My heart sure goes out to Jean Weavers family. It was good to have met you here. Hope you can visit Florence again some day for pleasure. Sincerly, Donna and Richard Dobson
Aunt Rita was HIS MOTHER !
I worked for a visiting nurses ass. We went into peoples home to take care of them. When I met a patient husband I just had a gut feeling about him. That he was slime. I gave him the benefit of the doubt. It turned out I was right. I have never doubted my gut feelings since. We were given this ability and we need to heed it. I never talk myself out of my gut feeling since. Believe in yourself.
After reading this story it has really touched my heart i dont know hw life and people can change the whole story its like someone was your world forever and today some one has taken you away from this world : the saddest part is wen ur life partner does this : i think he should be punished all the years he lives and realise his mistake :
Where was the child when the fire happened?  Where did the child go when he went on the lamb?
I am incredibly disturbed that Gordon Weaver's story of how he murdered his Wife was believed by the jury in the first place.  One does not nudge a young wife and then have her hit her head so hard she suffers a brain herniation from immeadiate swelling.  This injury would have taken a matter of at least an hour to evolve if Weaver's story was even half-true.  It is much more likely that he forcibly smashed her head in an insane rage.   He then, continuing in a rage, decided to burn her up.  It is unthinkable that a caring person would witness an "accident" of this sort and not call for help.  The defense attorney expects us to buy that this was an impulsive act to burn her????  Give me a break...nobody would do such a thing without being a sinister person indeed.  He knew he was guilty and that is why he ran. Then his own mom tells him it is better to change his identity than to kill himself???  Why would he kill himself if he was not as quilty as sin and did not want to spend the rest of his life in prison on death row???  The prosecution has done a horrendous job with this one.

Now the real kicker is that Jaimie's wife has the audacity to follow this homicidal maniac to Iowa.   She left a man that has more love in his heart than she will ever comprehend.  He is filled with the Holy Spirit while she follows the ever so cunning Satan.
I am disgusted at what is being said about these people.  I know these people, I know what happened, and it was not shown.  Do not judge Jaimie's wife..........it was not accurate.  And Jaimie was not shown to be who he really is.  There are several flaws in this story..........it is misguided and not accurate
Linz............ don't you foret that there was a women murdered!!! This man was on the run and is a cruel person!!!  There was a murder that happend and let us not forget her!!!!
