‘To Catch a Predator’ goes to Kentucky

It’s our twelfth “To Catch A Predator” investigation and this time we’re set up in a 6,000- square foot home in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It’s a town of about 50,000 people an hour north of Nashville, Tennessee.

Each one of these investigations has its own rhythm and Kentucky is no different. Within hours I am struck by the fact that fewer men are showing up at our hidden camera house than in past investigations.

Looking back I think this at least partially because the Kentucky Attorney General’s office and the Kentucky Bureau of Investigation, along with local law enforcement, have been actively pursuing online predators in the past year.

Before Dateline’s investigation in Bowling Green, the Attorney General’s office with the help of the online watchdog group Perverted Justice had conducted two previous sting operations without us, making 20 arrests.

One of them was a 59-year old criminal justice instructor at an Ohio college who used to be an elementary school teacher. He had been chatting online about having sex with a decoy posing as a13-year-old girl before showing up to meet her at the undercover house.

Even after this earlier high-profile case, though, we still saw men in our investigation eager to meet a young teen home alone for sex. As you will see, seven men show up over three and a half days and all seven are arrested after I talk to them and they leave the house.

You’ll see in Kentucky that we employ the same online decoy, Casey, who we used in New Jersey. She is just as effective in this latest investigation as she was before talking to the men in person.

You’ll see the grooming process in real time.

Also in Kentucky we see a range of men show up, from a factory worker to a man who says he’s a police detective and carries a gun.

Watch the heart-pounding moments when, as he leaves our hidden camera house, he refuses to follow orders from the arresting officers.

'To Catch a Predator' Kentucky airs Friday, Dec. 28.

Dear Chris Hansen,
I have recently played an international lottery, a few days later it came back that I AM A WINNER! I wanted to know if you could do a little research on a man named, Frank Mayo. He is supposed to be the man in charge. If I remembere correctly, you did an episode on a man in Africa by that name. I forgot to mention, this lottery is stemming from Africa. Here is the number he wants me to call:+27-73-110-8227. Please contact me ASAP at my email address or my home numbers:(330)-553-1079 or (330)298-3847.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME,
Marlayne Wesley
I think this show is very beneficial. I am an adult , and used to go into chat rooms, you never know who would be in there. I did meet four men, an dprobably could've me more, but it was definately not safe. I have three boys, two 8 yrs and one 11. I am sp glad they just want to be kids, for those who feel they need to chat, call on the phone, there are alot of crazy people, and I took to big of a risk meeting those guys. They could have hurt me or worse. I was lucky. Please do not take that risk. Live life to the fullest, without chats, all preople want is one thing, and are obssesed by it.
Hi All,

I think your program does a service to the community. My only question is why don't you ever have a show in an inner city neighborhood. Children there are at risk just as much as any suburb if not more. It dosen't have to be the projects but somewhere with a lower economic structure. I feel that since predators are expecting you to only be in the suburbs they will feel more secure to exploit poorer children...just a thought..

Jay, nj
Reading most the post from pro's and con's of this show surprises me. Has anyone actually talked to a victim up front. I myself starting at age 9 was molested. After recieving therapy I am now I would say 99% percent better, and realize at 9 I was too young to stop it and it wasn't my fault. But I will live with this the rest of my life unlike a molester he/she will live with what got them off and if caught maybe a couple years in jail. I have to live with the fact a person was dirty enough to take advantage of me at such a young age. But what make's it worse is when people actually are doing something to fight this others are shouting entrapment, Rating hikers, etc, etc. For the child does it really matter how it gets stopped. In my old neighborhood there is 280 molesters, in my grandma's neighborhood there is 180. There is something seriously wrong going on where that many people are taking advantage of children. So why not do what we have to do to stop it or you can go up to a 9 yr old child and look in there eye and tell them "Sorry you got molested and your innocence was taken but the molester has more rights then you" that is basicilly what you are telling us victims.
There's something not quite right about Perverted Justice. I used to peruse their message boards and you didn't have to register to do so. As soon as I registered and posted my first comment, which happened to bring up a few concerns about them, then 10 minutes later I was unable to access the boards again, and almost a year later, I STILL have no access. Seems to me they have a one track mind and allow no negative feedback to their operation.
go get em chris
GREAT SHOW I WORK IN PROBATION IN ALAMED COUNTY AND ALL OF YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.PROUD TO WATCH THE SHOW I WISH IT CAME ON MORE OFTEN THANKS FOR CARING ABOUT CHILDERN ACROSS THE WORLD.
I'm seeing your program. I heard that this was happening for awhile, but not as extensive as I'm washing right now. Latinamerica doesn't care that much about us, I know because there are people from those countries whom I have spoken positive about USA and what they do is blame the United States of America about their hardship. It's not our fault, it's their government's fault. We need to do more and hold up all humanitarian help for those countries if not sooner or later bad things could happend to us. I hope NOT.
Chris Hansen, I find it amusing that you continue to report this nonsense for two years. Month after month you continue to "catch a predator". There are more important things in the world to report than a handful of losers trying to have sex with a 24 year old actress.
For the life of me I can't understand how people say that "subjects" of these investigations have been set up.  PJ does not initate conversation with these guys; even if PJ did, these guys carry on (often for several different chat sessions).  Then they SHOW up at the home.  If it was all fantasy, why are they showing up?  Not to mention that it's completely wrong to have these kind of chats with someone one believes to be underage.  These are not "good family" people, they are the scum of the Earth and deserve everything that results from their actions.
I love Chris's segments. He's so casual about it. It's also interesting that these 'perps' say
"I wasn't gonna do nuthing"...
I would like to see you try to catch pedifiles.  I think there are men looking for young boys to molest, maybe even more than young girls.  I think boys have a false sence of security, on the inner net.  Young boys might not come forward, because of embarrasment, they make a much easier target.  Your show has been about minor girls, I think this makes an even more false sense of security for boys online.  I am glad you are exposing the preditors on line, but they are not all looking for young girls, alot are looking for our young boys too.
This is indeed the funniest shw ever created idk y ppl alow themselves to b fooled by the decoys stupidity is hilarious to me how this man drove 5 and a half hours juss to go to jail omg ppl wat it tha world coming to
HI, I think the show is great, We did have a progam, called W-Five, that did the same thing.

Keep up he good work.
86% of the victims of sexual assault by a female are not believed by authorities.  Less than one half of one per cent of females who commit a sexual assault ever serve a day in jail.  Repeated requests for NBC's Dateline to conduct a Predator sting on females (of any age) has gone unanswered.  In a recent question posed to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (How many females have you investigated for predator activity on the Internet?). they responded NONE.  Therapists across the U.S. have long-since acknowledged that up to 40% of sexual assaults are committed by females yet in virtually every state less than one per cent of those on a "sex offender" list are females.  If you really are out to protect children, why the bias?
This show is such a joke.  How can this not be entrapment?  Over and over I see victims "lied to" in the name of "protecting kids."  Perverted Justice and NBC is who we need to stop... and NBC should stop paying them to do this.  Spend your money to really help the situation.
That so called "Cop" was wimpering like a school girl when he was apprehended!! I knew then, he was not a police officer.
No matter how many of these scumbags i see and hear on this show, it still amazes me that grown men can think and behave like this- in regards to kids?!
Another home run DATELINE!!! and P.J. too!!
This show is great. I watched it tonight with my 8 and 10 year old girls and it really hit home for them. Not only do they have a clearer understanding of what could happen in chat room but also that people are not who they say they are. This was very helpful and wish you all the best. Keep up the good work!!
i never visit chat rooms. This show is the best thing that has happened in america since the abolishion of slavery! when are you guys coming to New York, hurry, we need you!
I can't believe you put Stumbo on the air to say Kentucky children are now safe from sexual predators when you know in all your investigations that you will get just as many arrests if you did 10 of these shows in the same house in a row - did you really do Kentucky children any favors by putting that comment on the air?
this show is such an eye opener, for all us parents.iam amazed at some of the ''normal'' looking people they catch each week.it really is scary.i have a question-are there ever women preadators  on your show?? we read about them in the news, and the media example- like debra lafae.do you ever  target them?  thanks for making our world a safer place!
Hurray, the Predator series is back. I frickin' LOVE this show! Nothing's funnier than watching a bunch of losers making one lame excuse after another when they're caught red handed: "I wasn't gonna do nothing." "This was my first time." "She lied to me about her age." HA. Put a sock in it, boys, you've been pwned by Chris Hansen. Now we sit back and wait for the usual band of pedophile apologists to show up and demand that Dateline "stop publicly humiliating these poor lonely men" and to ask the one question burning in the minds of male perverts everywhere, "Where are the women predators?"
I'm so glad dateline keeps doing these shows. It would be great if someday we get to the point that no one shows up.... I guess that is just wishful thinking. Keep up the good work dateline. These guys are getting just what they deserve!!
I think would be more beneficial if you had punishments for the kids talking to the adults as well. Today the kids are not as innocent, they know about sex and find it to be more appealing to date older men. I'm not saying that the older men are not wrong but you need to attack it on both sides. Maybe you set up kids and the adults in your sting operation. Most of the men own your show who were caught seem to be outcast of normal society which would cause them to pray on the younger kids. Get these men counseling and stop filling up our jails with these people help them. Give them mind altering drugs to control there urges that is just as addictive like cirgerretes to keep them using it. In the old times men in there 40s would go after young woman and marry and it was okay. We have to break that idea in our times, but be more productive than just sending them to prison.
While I agree that men are the most prominate predator, what about women predators?
I keep hoping one of these animals will pull a weapon, so police can administer the only proper justice for this crime. Even if they're not convicted in a court of law, they're marked for the rest of their lives, and that makes a difference.  Thank you.
I have watched each "To catch A Predator."  I am always amazed and disgusted by these people.  As a teacher, who has taught children who have been molested by not only men, I started to wonder during this recent Dateline, do  they ever catch the woman who go after young boys on the internet?  It is equally as wrong and can be as destructive to a young boy.
Why has your show totally ignored the Foley issue, political pressure? These kids were also under 18 and what's worse is he used his position by promising jobs etc.to obtain sexual favors. Since you mention a "High Profile" case, wouldn't investigating the Foley case be the ultimate high profile case to serve as a deterent? Is it another case of money and political connections allows some to go unpunished by using/making up excuses that don't work for the other sexual deviants. The law should apply to every one the same way, right? And you should pursue a public servant possibly even more so especially one who used his position in an attempt to gain sexual favors.
ABC interviewed Mark Foley, 52, about excerpts of instant messages provided by current and former pages under the age of 18. ABC reported that Foley, under the AOL Instant Messenger screen name Maf54, made repeated references to sexual acts and body parts.
I watched your Dateline show on 12/28/07.  As a 52 yr. profesional male, these men and all men like them deserve what they get but I would like to see more balanced reporting that covers mature women  (aka "cougars") stalking young teen men.......I think you would be surprised that this issue is 50/50.  I would like like nothing more than to see women leaving young male teens homes and being told to drop to the ground by law enforcement as they attempt to flee the scene. I'm sure NBC will never allow balanced reporting because it's easier and more socially acceptable to sell ads by skewing reporting against males.....shame on you NBC.  I thought by 2007 you had past sexual discrimination.  As a Christian male I will continue to view NBC but please tell the other side of this story as there is plenty of sexual impropriety equally shared between older men and women.  Thank you and I would appreciate your feedback so I know know you're listenining to my viewpoint!
Keep up the good work !!!!!
I wish there was more of psycho therapy involved. The men that are attracted to younger women have issues of being lonely and wanting love. The men should be counciled on their personal issues. The men may also feel even more alienated once their caught and they need some positive tools to establish a better way of living. The young women that chat with older men should be held accountable and counciled for their actions as well. Men and young women should be educated to deal with these situations to prevent a taboo sexual encounter.
The program must draw big bucks.  But the program is really, really worn out.  Why don't you just keep catching the predatorsj(that's a really valuable and needed effort), but drop the program??  Or try another host!!  Also, the arrests are exaggerated, overdone, and, as has already been demonstrated, even illegal.
I think your show is as pathetic as the sex addicts you entrap. It is the worst of ambush journalism. ABC News 20/20 had it right when they did their expose on your show. Not a single one of your Texas "predators" was prosecuted. What you do is vicarious thrills and titillation but neither news nor journalism.
I can never praise you guys enough for your Dateline segments 'TO CATCH A PREDATOR.' They are by far the best Dateline has done and I've been a fan for years.  As a child victim of such predators, I am so sick of hearing what some critics have to say about these poor pigs and that Dateline is wrong for doing these episodes. I was raised in multiple foster homes and group homes and repeatedly molested by those who were paid to protect me. I ran away at a very young age and was again used by some of the lowest forms of life. I invite one of these critics to speak with me, in person as I can attest to the damage it can do to a human being, let alone a child. To NBC I say, keep it up with the Dateline series and Thank You so much doing these shows. To Mr. Hansen & Decoy's, although I fear for you every time you come face to face with one of these animals, I applaud you for your courage. To Perverted Justice, hat's off to all of you, you do an incredible job and service. Thanks again to you all.
I just watched what must be the hundreth episode of To Catch. Wow, Chris.  Congratulations.  Edward R. Murrow would be so proud?
These men on "To Catch a Predator" really did need to be caught. Who knows for how long they have prowled around lusting for our precious youth. But, might I ask, why single out just the filthy men? Why not expose the the filthy women as well!!! You know they are out there, don't you. So what are you guys waiting for! Go get um...

Does Dateline put out a copy of all the names that these predators go under?  I have run into many situations just playing games, and would like to have a place to go to see if any of those people were listed as predators under their made up names.
I watch the show all the time.. I actully txt my friends to come over to watch it religiously...  Anyways... Is it me or is the Decoy aprox 20 yrs old.. The last Episode aired on Dec 28 2007, showed alot of close up shots of the decoy's face. Personally, she looks very simular to the old Lindsay Lohan = VERY ATTRACTIVE!!!  :)  Anyone know if she is a real actress with a Fan base?  NBC... Keep up the good work with police'n our neighborhoods..  You definatly are helping, by keeping our community's SILENT "cells" community on the decline.  Keep'em comming and Lock'em up!
I am a great grandmother with the oldest being 4 down to 2 months. I go on the internet for everything. I would not ever let my grandchildren or greatchildren on the internet without proper supervision. It's like giving preditors a house key and saying go on in. The way the world is now."TRUST NO ONE". Keep your eyes and ears open and TEACH your children.

Hello,I had a thought about what goes on at home with the spouse or girlfriend of these sick people? Will you ever do a follow up show about that and what goes on after the got caught?I would love to see a show like that. And I love to see these people get what they deserve,Chris Hansen you're great.
Unfortunite it is that the very broad basd laws have nothing to do with reality.  True pediphiles are a species negative.  The guy or gal who comes out of a bar with what turns out to be a "underaged" person is some kind of criminal ?  That needs to be exp-lained.  Also asking for sex in a chat room is dangerous as criminals can scam un suspecting victims.  the best is two reforms a webcam and a law that considers "likness theft" to be a crime as well as a civil tort.  "Singles" or "dateting sites can be compelled to do two things verify as best as cam the age of the participant and when a member quits their profile ,picture is archived no to be seen unless they (the person) rejoins.  One big objection is to delete predator as it is a emotional word and inaccurate.
I am the sister to one of your Kentucky predators. I have to say when I heard about this, I was completely appauled that my own brother could get himself in a situation like this, but not surprised.
In response to this whole incident, I want to thank Chris Hansen for what he does. I wish there were more Chris Hansen's available in this world. This was a blessing in disguise for my brother. I hope it finally helps him to realize he isnt above and beyond the law.
There is another side of this story that is not being reported on by Chris Hansen the folks at Dateline NBC. The use of the internet to solicit young 13 yr. old girls (decoys) is not unqique to males. There are professsional and blue collar women from all walks of life (just like the men that were profiled in last nights episode) who just like the men are using the internet to solicit underage boys! Even though it is not as "main stream" or prolific it does happen and would probably pull in incredible ratings for NBC! Viewers must be presented with the reality that it's not just men who use the internet to solicit young girls. I've seen stories in local papers of women getting busted for the simlar abuses. It make sense too...consider just for a moment how many young hormone infused boys that are on line and in those same chat rooms that would take a woman up on her offer to meet (decoy or not!). As a viewer I would appreciate it if the Producers of this series would consider doing a report on the other side of the issue. I'm certain that with a little bit of work Perverted Justice could help you arrange a similar sting on females predators. Thanks and keep up the good work and for protecting our children. Fair and balance reporting is important in journalism today. Congrats to Dateline NBC and Perverted Justice on their 12th show.
No one is in favor of sexual predation on underage minors.  However, given that the actress in your sting operations was over the legal age of consent (which is 16 in KY), and that no sexual activity took place, I am wondering what criminal charges were made against the would-be predators?  Is attempted solicitation of someone perceived to be a minor a crime in KY?  I am also wondering why the police are acting so violently in arresting non-violent offenders (multiple policemen with drawn guns threatening lethal violence, forcing the arrestee to lie flat on the ground).  Have those arrested signed consents to be on your program?  If so, have they been financially compensated to do so?  Is Dateline acting within the law by inducing individuals to solicit underage girls for sex?  Have there been any civil law suits alleging entrapment?
Dear Mr.Hansen
I commend you sir for the work that you and your show does.  Some are amazed that these people still keep getting caught, even knowing that the chance of them getting caught are high.  It just goes to show that this is a perverse sickness that plauges even the well educated.  These people need to be caught and dealt with.  It seems like more and more I see in the news that teachers of the female persuation are not exempt from this sickness.  I would also like to commend the young ladies who act as the decoys for these people, as it takes courage to do it, even with all the police presence and your staff in the house.  I hope you continue in your endevoures to pursue these people.  May the Lord bless you for all the children you are saving.
As a grandmother of two, I believe your show is doing a great service. Although I was a nurse for 43 yrs, frontal lobotomies were before my time. But I think it is time to bring them back. Nothing is going to cure or stop these men. At least they would then be harmless.
I can understand going after someone who has the capacity to commit the crime...but the question is would a reasonable 13 or 14 year old girl pursue a man with cerebral paulsy and limping with a cane? I saw the episode that displayed the man's picture (bug eyes and all). In his defense, no good looking teenage female would find him sexually attractive,  much less attempt sexual relations with that individual. This is where , I believe the show borders on "Entrapment" where said individual barely had the capacity to converse "Online" much less have the capacity to pursue and engage in sexual relations. Essentially, you tossed Raw meat in front of a wounded and limping lion and pounced on him when he limped towards the meat. Shame on you, MSNBC! You Place your TV Ratings above common human decency!
back in the 1990's we didn't have on-line pradators
then.it's a good thing that you people catch sexural pradators before they hurt anymore kids.I'm a old fashioned 29 year old uncle of three neices and I want to keep them safe just as badly as you people do
on-line pradators are nothing but peices of trash they
should burn in hell!
I just want to say thank you to Dateline for doing these operations. I feel like it has laid the foundation for my 2 year old daughters future safety.
THANK YOU NBC!! This is a mind blowing show. This show should be mandated in our schools! Keep up the good work.
