Sitting down with Drew Peterson

You never know quite what to expect when you sit down to do an interview. So when Drew Peterson took a chair opposite me, I'll be honest:  I wasn't sure what was coming.

I knew his backstory well.  My producer Sue Simpson had provided me with information, news articles, police reports, autopsy reports.

His life did seem complicated -- when it came to women. This was a police officer with almost 30 years on the Bolingbrook Police Force.  He'd been married four times. His first three marriages ended in divorce; after he split from his third wife, she was found dead in her bathtub and his fourth wife, Stacy, was now missing.

I wondered if he was the unluckiest man on earth, with two of his four wives either missing or dead, or if there was more to the story. What would he tell me?

Drew Peterson walked into the room. He had just finished an interview with Matt Lauer on the TODAY Show and was ready to sit in the chair opposite me.

He seemed calm. Collected.  I'd watched Matt's interview with him and he hadn't shown any emotion then although he gave lots of information.  I was expecting something similar.  Our camera crews and soundmen were all set up and ready to roll.

In the beginning, we talked about the media and how loud it was in front of his house in Bolingbrook, Illinois. He told me he was tired of  the generators from the TV live trucks going non-stop; he hoped this interview would put an end to the media chase.

He talked about Stacy: how they fell in love, the courtship, his proposals and their kids.

He also talked about the 30-year age gap, saying he had talked it over with Stacy,  adding that it was "exciting" to  have a young, beautiful woman interested in him.

Some of the things he said stood out including his description of how he pampered Stacy.   He got her, in his words, " a boob job. She wanted a tummy tuck, she got that. She wanted braces, lasik surgery, hair removal ... anything. ... we did all these repairs on her."

Then at one point in the interview he seemed overcome by emotion. He actually got up, left the interview area and said "I'm sorry. I need a minute."  He stood off-camera for a bit, composed himself and sat back down.

I wasn't clear what brought that emotional wave on, so I asked him.  He said, "Different things touch me off." And I when pressed him, he indicated that he'd been remembering Stacy's emotion at the time of her sister's death.  "Because it hit her very hard," he said.

He also told me that people didn't understand him: that he was a guy with a good sense of humor, a man who had tried to live an honorable life and worked hard to provide for his family, a man who was now being unfairly portrayed by the media.

Near the end of the interview, I asked him if he had anything to do with the disappearance of his fourth wife Stacy or the death of his third wife Kathy. He answered "no" to both questions.

Then Drew Peterson left the room and I was left with my original thought: you just never know what to expect when you sit down to do an interview.

You must have been caught unprepared to do an interview like that.  Such a missed opportunity to key in on the real issues that he hasn't answered both with his 3rd. wife's death and Kathleen's disappearance.  Why don't you take some notes and get down to business with this guy?
We all know this guy in all likelyhood killed his third and fourth wife,so why doesn't the media trail and stalk this creep like they've done to many others who have turned out to be guilty as well as innocent.

Because this devil is a former police officer, the media are afraid to do close quarter investigating as they have with others who have no where near the history of this individual.

This guy is laughing at both the media and law enforcement and the people who are in a position to put him in jail forever where he belongs, are sitting back and hoping that people forget.
I really hate how the media turns killers like Drew Peterson into stars. Knock off the saturation already and quit feeding into his ego. The media is not doing our society any favors by turning him (and other murderous attention-seeking nut jobs) into some kind of folk hero.
I was married to a man like this.  Although he was only a  year older than me, the behavior was almost identical.  There's not a doubt in my mind about Peterson's guilt.  My ex would've killed me if I hadn't left, after 5 miserable years, and made sure I covered my tracks. Thank goodness I didn't have a child with him, or I would be another statistic.  If Stacy made a mistake, it was telling him she was leaving.  A man like this can't take that kind of rejection because in his mind, he is the victim.  How sick is that?!  His downfall will be his arrogance and his opinion that he's too smart to be caught.  Just like Scott Peterson, he's appearing on television and I just saw that he's set up a website for the public to help pay his legal expenses!  Talk about nerve.  My ex ruined my reputation in the city I've lived in all my life, by claiming I had affairs, etc.  But hey, at least I'm not dead.  My heart goes out to Stacy's family, especially her children.  He chose her because she was young and therefore more easily controlled.  That's his "thing," control.  It's probably why he became a cop in the first place.  I look forward to the day he is held accountable.
Trying to keep an open mind in this case is very hard. Drew Peterson is arrogant and comes across as being manipulative and sneaky. He doesn't appear to be missing his wife or concerned at all about her well being which leads me to believe that he knows she's dead. The blue barrel concerns me and I do hope someone finds it soon but chances are he's buried it deep and it'll never be found. My heart aches for the kids and Stacey's family. In all appearances she was a great mom and doted on her kids so if she's still alive out there, why hasn't she contacted someone to let them know she's okay. Unless she's living down under with the pygmies, there's no way she hasn't seen the news coverage so there's no way she's still alive. And Drew Peterson looks more and more guilty every time he's on TV
Drew Peterson must be certain that Stacey's body will never be found. No body, no crime. This is why he conducts himself the way he is. If forensic tests performed on the exhumed body of the first wife he killed prove to be inconclusive, he doesn't get charged with that murder either. Look at OJ...at Scott Peterson and now this man. No remorse whatsoever, but the same facial expression that looks like it came from "SmirksRUs". Ugly. Evil. I'm thinking that the prospect of eternity in HELL just doesn't bother scum like this one bit. It's the families left behind who suffer. Has Scott Peterson been as "clever" as Drew in disposing of Laci's body, that useless waste of human space would be walking the streets as well.
How about giving us some updates on the case. The media went from a feeding frenzy of reports to nothing. I'm interested in the Primary's and presidential candidate's race more so than Peterson's case but the media seems to have tunnel vision. It seems we get none stop coverage and repeats of the same stories all day and evening. I have been trying to find an update for weeks. Btw, I do think that Drew's media coverage has been quite revealing. The man hasn't appeared to be distraught over his wife's disappearance since day one.
Also what man 30 yrs older than his young attractive wife wouldn't be in need of some "surgical tweaking" of his own. Although no amount of plastic surgery could repair Mr. Peterson's real needs. God is the only one who can change the heart, maybe we all need to keep this family in our prayers.
I agree with Carly...that fact that he married a child...wouldnt that raise a red flag to his fellow police officers?  THat is stat. rape in some states!  Sure DP's calm...hes's a sociopath with no conscience or remorse whatsoever...I dont know how anyone, let alone the police force cannot see thru that smug guiltier-than-hell attitude.
i hope and pray that stacey's family and friends receive some type of closure.i don't know what happened only god know's.i do hope that stacey is alive & well.i know what it's like to loose a love one
it is a void that can never be fulfilled.i will continue to pray for stacy's family & friends.
YEA DREW , AS YOU WELL KNOW IN THIS COUNTRY , "YOU ARE "GUILY UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE" you are playing this to the hilt ,and you may get off "Scott Free "
remember one small piece of this puzzle , SCOTT IS NOT FREE ,,,Scott Peterson that is,,,,  where is  Stacy ???? give it up , it's over , be a man like you have claimed you were for 30 years , our U S does not need animals like you , especially in our security system..... what goes around , comes around ......
This guy makes me sick. He is so so smug and thinks that he is going to get away with killing his wife. He talks about the improvements he made to her and just by looking at him I would say that he is the one who thought that she was not good enough just the way she was. I so can not wait until the day that she is found and this sick sick SOB is put behind bars where he so belongs. I so hope you read this Drew Peterson because there will come a day that her body will be found and just like Scott Peterson you will be put where you belong. And if that day doesn't come and she isn't found you will one day have your judgement day and you will go to hell where you belong for the 2 women that you killed.
Peterson is a sick, disgusting, chauvanistic, woman-objectifying loser.  Innocent until proven guilty or not, his claim that she ran away with another man is a load if I've ever heard one...by the way, if that were true (which it's not), why doesn't he care?  She was his wife after all.  I've seen men whose wives have left for another and they aren't calling Radio stations looking for dates.  They grieve and mourn the loss...at least for a little while!  Man, lock this guy up and call it a day!
To put many minds at ease regarding innocent or guilty, take a lie detector test.  Although not admissable and some people can pass it even if guilty or fail if innocent, isn't it worth it?  So, if he is truly innocent, take the test.  If he passes, good for him.  It can't hurt.
mr. peterson is the worst kind of person ~ a fake, a liar, and so insecure that he constantly needs a woman 30 years younger (at least) to make himself feel good.  she was nothing but "arm candy", and now he has no more use for her.  i bet the next one will be even younger (and there will be a next one)!
Im curious as to why he has not been named a suspect in his 3rd wifes murder. Its obvious to the naked eye he had something to do with it and the Po Po is covering for him
I have serious doubts about Drew Peterson's innocence, despite appreciating we are all innocent under the law until proven innocent. The details of this case so far are very disturbing, this man has too much 'gray area' surrounding him, too much bad history with dead or missing women and his demeanor bespeaks guilt. I have a clinical background and something just doesn't feel right here. I hope he goes to trial quickly.
Any first year law student will tell you that if you are culpable in an offence you should not make any statement to anyone.  You are not required to do so.
This is based on statistical information the indicates that the more you talk the more chance there is that you will be found guilty.  I think Peterson knows this by his expereince and education.
Under nominal circumstances, there is no body, no clear motive, no empiracle evidence etc.  He has nothing to gain by going on the media.
I am truly concerned over the media's new found ability to assign guilt or innocence based on what sells soap.
