Ann Curry on the 4th hour, fame and the pain of Darfur

(From Eric Jackson, TODAY Associate Producer)

First, before I get into my anchor Q&A with Ann Curry, I would like to thank her for taking the time to sit down with me not once, but twice, due to technical difficulties.  You see, in preparation for this interview, I went out and bought this new tape recorder.  I even did the cheesy "test, test, test, test" audio check before going to talk to Ann.  Seriously--ask my cubicle neighbors.  Well, little did I know that this tape recorder has this feature where, if the audio in the room is too low, it stops recording.  And wouldn't you know it--the audio, at times, was too low.  So I finish the interview, come back to write it up, and as I'm listening to it, panic sets in.  I had practically nothing.  I felt like I had just been Punk'd.  I e-mail Ann and her assistant, Claire, right away, mortified beyond belief.  Ann e-mails me right back and says that it's no problem, we'll do it again tomorrow, later explaining that early in her career, she had a similar problem.  So, thank you again to Ann.  What follows is our conversation....take two.

Q: First off, this is the third week of TODAY’s  fourth hour.  How's it going so far?

Ann: It seems to be going OK.  It's feeling more and more comfortable every day. I hope so at least.  I hope that process will continue, that it will continue to get better and better.  I hope it's useful more than anything else.

Q: What sort of topics do you want to bring to that hour?

Ann: I want to show our viewers the world.  That's my wish -- to let our viewers know what's going on in the world.  We're talking a lot about how to improve their lives, friendships.  These are important topics.  We'll see how this progresses, but we're really trying to understand what women at this hour need.  We're going to do our best to fulfill their needs.

Q: The fourth hour is just another thing on your already-full plate.  Aside from TODAY, you do Dateline and sometimes fill in on Nightly News, to name just a few of your other responsibilities.  How do you handle it?  Is it overwhelming sometimes?

Ann: Sure it is.  I was joking that sometimes I feel I need an intervention (laughs).  You know, I'm not complaining, though.  This is a great opportunity to be useful, and that's my wish.  I want very much to not look back and think that I had not done enough.  So for right now, I keep my priorities straight.  I don't go out at night, except on Friday nights.  I'm a school night girl, home for homework and dinner.  And we have a rule at our table.  No matter how late it is, we sit down together and eat.  Sometimes dinner is cold.  Sometimes it's not exactly as I would've wished in terms of the food.  But that's not what matters.  It's the conversation.

When is Dateline going to return on air?  I miss it and hate the football games that have replaced it.  I like it when you're on two to three times a week.  Please come back!
Although Ann Curry is very professional and certainly well qualified, I miss Stone Phillips.  Stone was the heart and soul of Dateline.  It's just not the same and I find myself not watching nearly as often.  Ann just seems rather cold and impersonal.  Just my opinion.  Don't like the way Stone left either.
EXCELLENT JOB FROM A REAL PRO.  HER HARD WORK SHINES THROUGH.
In answer to one viewer re: 'Ann, cold and impersonable", I heartily disagree. Stone was good no doubt but Ann has charisma, charm and reaches out to all viewers in my mind.  I do not recall any female journalist that has the warmth and charm that Ann Curry has - Ann, you go girl!  Love ya.
Are you kidding with the cold and impersonal comment?I have to agree  with the other women who like Ann Curry. I've watched her for a long time and I think she speaks extremely well and seems to be very solid. I think she's beautiful and presents herself in a very professional manner.  I'm proud that she's come a long way. She's risked a lot and and has helped by getting the word out about what's really going on in the world that we are not personally experiencing to on a daily basis.
I live on the west coast of canada, and I have not seen dateline in a long time,I keep looking for it, as I think it is a great show,  I had no idea that Stone had left. I love Ann Curry, I think she is warm and comes across as very caring about the people she talks to, keep it up Ann.
I had no idea that Stone had left either. When? Where was it announced?
I really like Anne and the articulate, caring job that she does on Dateline. She shows a lot of empathy for her stories and I think she is the consumate professional. I do miss Stone, however, and feel that the way he was treated with his exit was not fair NOR professional. I miss him and thought that he and Anne made a great team. What was Dateline thinking when they dismissed Stone?  Bad decision!
Why did they not offer Ann Katie's spot on the show?
She is good.
I love Ann Currie and couldn't agree more with those who say she's warm and professional.  Definetly eye candy too.  Keep up the good work Ann.
I'd listen to Ann Curry read a cookbook.  I don't see how she and Lester Holt ever get a chance to see their families. They must have an 8X10 glossy on the mantle for reference.
ann i seen your story on the bosnia children in the metal instatute..i am so heart broken over that story..how can i help..
This message is on the piece Ann did yesterday on the NBC news about mentally ill people in a third world country (can't remember the country).  The piece showed conditions of the institution (not the best but?), then she asked some political official if that was acceptable treatment of the mentally ill.  I though the piece was arrogant and downright rude.  How would we like someone coming to our country and showing mentally ill living on the streets eating garbage, then asking our government if that is acceptable treatment for the mentally ill.  No wonder the world hates us.
I have not had TV in several months, and I can surely say that Dateline is the one show I miss the most.
I do like Ann Curry, however, in some respects I agree with the first woman. I think Ann IS very caring and a great addition, but there is something about her I am not so sure I am fond of. Possibly she is too soft spoken or a bit too demure. In any case she certainly is a gorgeous, sophisticated, courageous woman. She has earned great respect. I do miss Stone Phillips though. His voice was the show. I really do miss him alot.
I hated to see Katie go, and have not watched Today very ofter since she left, but I too wonder why Ann wasn't offered Katie's job.  I also disagree whole-heartedly that Ann is cold and impersonal.  She's caring and empathetic almost to a fault!  Ann is bringing to light some very important truths in our world, and I pray the fruits of her labor will be many.  Great work, Ann!  May God richly bless you and your family.
I think Ann does a great job! She should have gotten the spot Katie had too. She comes across as a real professional reporter, her wardrobe is so perfect & fitting of her job. Have been enjoying her on the show for a long time.
Ann is a celebrity but she is down to earth. I enjoy the today show and watch it regularly. Ann don't change  the way you blush and cover your face, that is your trademark and it suits you well.
I like Anne. She has a certain charisma about her when she does the news. She brings something personal into each of her stories. She is a very talented news anchor.
Anne is one of the best tv reporters ever. Regarding the mentally ill, she is bringing awareness and it's about time someone did. The government needs a reality check every now and then. The more we talk about it the better the chances are of action. What are we supposed to sweep these issues under the rug and pretend this world is a bowl of cherries? I don't think so.
I was thinking as I watched Ann the other day on the Today show:  There is something special about Ann.  There is a light of love that shines through her all the time.  That light is a candle to the whole Today show.  I think she is very passionate, caring, and sincere.  She always presents herself with integrity which is very professional.  Good Job Ann Curry!
ann... you are thr reason watch today, dateline, and other shows that feature you. you are very endearing and believable. i trust you to give me the truth, at a time, when too often we ask 'how honest is the report that's being presented?'.keep up the great work.
Another "star" journalist....figure the odds. In my opinion, most stories covered by DATELINE, et al, with their Hollywood-like reporters, aren't worth the airtime they burn. Darfur, while tragic, has no bearing on America's national strategic interests, nor does Bosnia (aka: Clinton's War). How about having these oh-so-cute-and-cuddly reporters start covering issues that have true relevance to today's America? How about reporting on issues that matter? Oh, one last item; please, no more stories on how "courageous" and "sensational" these journalists are.....let's reserve those terms for the truly brave and courageous people who are actually trying to help, ie, Marines, Sailors..etc.
I like Ann but what happen to stone he really made dateline It just isn't the same with Ann.
does anyon have any comments on darfur?
Ann
I just finished watching your interview with the parents and 7 children on Wednesday night the 12th of December. Very few interviewers can show the warmth you showed to each of the children. You may be short in statue but your much bigger than your peers. Job well done.
I've never written to anyone before.  However, I had to comment on Ann Curry's excellent interview on Dateline tonight.  The show was called "Seven@Ten". I really have not followed the family throughout the ten years.  But as a retired kindergarten teacher, I found her questions and her manner to be both sensitive and insightful.  I have never seen Ann before, nor have I been a regular watcher of the show, but I had to write this.  I think she's very good.  I'll be looking for her from now on.
Not only is Anne Currie a fox, but she is crazy too!
She is nutty in a beautiful way.  Imagine bungie jumping for charity.
I'm surprised to see the world becoming smaller and
smaller, I don't mean in size but in how newsmedia has made it smaller, we have North America(US & Canada)then we have Mexico (immigrants) then we have Africa, once Ethiopia was important to be in the news, South Africa, Kenia, and the other states due to their fights, let's not forget Darfur, actor and actresses are in love with it, then you have Russia, always in the news, Irak, Iran Afganistan, then there are those other countries, let's not North Korea, I gues prety much we have gone around the world, have we forgoten any country? we have covered Europe, Africa, Middle East, Far East and back in the US.
I think the newsmedia forgot those non esential countries south of Mexico, like Venezuela & Bolivia that are mentioned only when an idiot like Chavez calls our president a "Devil" or another bigger idiot Morales in Bolivia that calls our president"assasin", our when two ladies are voted to be president, Chile & Argentina, to the newsmedia people these are not news to them is a waste of time to cover them, just remember there are 140+ million of us if we can not have Gov.Richardson this time, there will be another time to vote a "Latin" (as you call us) as our presidente.
Just learned that Stone Phillips was no longer with NBC Dateline.  Terrible. He made the show. No announcement or going away presentation for him - hope he surfaces on another station which this household will watch. He is the best!!
I could care a less whether this appears in the thread.  What's more important to me is that Ms. Currie actually reads this.  I am very impressed with your professionalism and journalistic intergrity especially with concern to the young kids fighting in the Congo. Words cannot describe how tragic a situation it has become, and that's only one place that we know of. I am a single man in his mid 30's living in the midwest with a middle class job, which I feel quite fortunate to have all I have. I guess everything I have seems so insignificant when you see what else is going on in the world. I'm not the type of person who gets overwelhmed by material things. Making a connection with someone is where I find my joy. I really would like to get involved and I don't mean by just staying here in the states.  I want to be directly involved. Right now!  I want to make a difference.  That is my passion.  I just need to get more foot in the door and I know I will and can make a difference. I just want to help. Thanks for your time and keep up the great work.  Steve
I,ve been watching the TODAY SHOW for a vey long time nownad appreciate it soo much. One of the most inspiring people I think I,ve seen on television in the last thirty years is Ann Curry. She makes no bones about the issues that are close to her heart such as the Darfur conflict, the Congo among other stories. Whether we like it or not the stories are apart of the human story bank and as such they effect us all. Especially because these are stories not only of political and human rights but of WOMENS RIGHTS in the most basic way! Keep it up Ann,you are terrific.
  Hi Ann Curry
My wife and I would like  pass on our condolences concerning the death of your Father. We watch the "Today Show" and really enjoy it.You are our favourite.
