Knocking on doors in Cheshire, Conn.

My car wipers were fighting back a steady rain as I peered through the windshield, trying to get my bearings in a place called Cheshire, Connecticut. I was beginning to wonder why I picked this day to slog up I-84 from New York City to knock on doors in a distant town. Would I find anyone out on a day like this? And even if I did, would they talk about what had happened here?

Eventually, I found the street I was looking for: Sorghum Mill Drive. As I turned onto it I stopped the car almost instantly. There was a sign up ahead that warned would-be speeders to slow down. "We love our children," it read. I was getting a serious case of the creeps.

Evil comes to all types of people all over the world. But it's not supposed to trespass here, in leafy enclaves that proudly demand their children's safety. Yet somehow in the early, dark hours of July 23, the devil slipped through the back door at 300 Sorghum Mill Drive and into the heart of the Petit house. It's believed that two intruders, parolees, broke into the home and terrorized a doctor, his wife and two daughters over the course of seven hours before ending their rampage with gasoline and a match.

Now, weeks later, I was walking this traumatized neighborhood, looking for people willing to recall the horror they woke to that morning. I must have knocked on 15 doors. The people who opened them promptly closed them again once they heard why I was there. Drenched and discouraged, I was heading for my car when I spotted a woman on her driveway. I walked up and began my introduction.

"I'm Marianne from..." The woman flashed an open hand. "I am sick of you media coming around here knocking on our doors," she said. Yes, she explained, she had been talking to reporters. But now she was done with us. "We're trying to heal," she said, the anger in her voice rising. "But how can we when you guys keep coming asking these questions?"

I apologized to the woman and thanked her for her time. I had driven more than two hours to Cheshire in the rain to find someone willing to talk about what had happened here, and all I had to show for it were soaked pants and squishy shoes. The reporter in me recoiled at going home empty-handed. But I also knew that the residents of Sorghum Mill Drive wanted -- maybe needed -- nothing more than to see my taillights fading in the mist. I clicked my car open. For today, at least, I was done knocking on doors.

Dateline will air a special piece on the killings in Connecticut tonight, Sept. 10, at 10 p.m. Eastern/9 Central.

Obviously people need time to heal, how would you feel if it was your family??
I am sure I can speak for everyone across the nation that our hearts go out to this family, and all of the surrounding neighbors who must be haunted every morning when they look out their windows to see the Petit house and be reminded of that tragic day.  We don't have to ask them anything because we already know:  each and everyone one of them feel  devastated.  Our hearts especially go out to Dr. Petit and we send our love and comfort to him.  What can we do to help this man recover?  What can we do to help celebrate the iives and memories of these three beautiful women?  Please tell us in tonight's program.  And tell Dr. Petit that we are all grieving for him and that our collective arms are holding him tight.
Ms. O'donnell,
Your commentary reads like a wonderful crime novel that has me spellbound,I don't want to put it down. How sad that the stuff great novelists wrote that kept us mesmerized, days on end, have become the frightening reality of our time. Sadly enough, not even they could dream up the horrendous acts that we read about daily. That such evil could become so entrenched within our society is almost surreal. It's become the horror novel that doesn't end. May God help us.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the Petit family murders. There is no rhyme nor reason to such crimes, which are on an escalating scale, and it is understandable that the neighbours are hesitant to discuss the situation. It only serves to exacerabate their already deep wounds. This also illustrates that regardless of where one lives or their socioeconomic status within their respective communities, there is never a guarantee of safety. My heartfelt condolences go to the family.
I just want to say that I think the best thing to doe right now since it's all so new is what the lady on the driveway said.  Let them heal.  Time will eventually make it somewhat easier to talk about.
It is stories like this we need to see, it will help us all remember that it could happen in our town , or anyones. I applaud you for this. sharon gilbert
The tragedy that rocked Cheshire sent shock waves throughout the entire state. Absolute evil, in its purest form. Heartbreaking then, heartbreaking now. There are more people in this state than there were before we moved here, and no one can seem to get a handle on the violence that just keeps going, on and on. We are wondering if it isn't time to leave.
I'm planning to watch tonight -I certainly hope that whatever you have to say -it will not hinder the case against these evil doers. For surely you must agree that they need to pay the ultimate price for the evil that they brought into the neighbrhood this mid summer's eve.
Just leave them alone
A very well written article by Marianne O'Donnell regarding the neighbors on that street in Cheshire, where the doctor, his wife and their 2 children lived.  It is still difficult to comprehend the awful events of that day.  I can only hope that time will help to heal the doctor and his extended family.
Good choice. Reporters should show this type of respect more often.
This was really tough for us in CT.  I live only 4 miles from where the Petit family lived.  It breaks my heart to watch it again.  My heart goes out to those families.
i want the media to learn that there is no WHY when it comes to pure evil.  i want reporters/journalists to STOP asking such an absurd question.  it did not matter that dr. petit was asleep on the sunporch.  to insinuate this had anything to do with what these evil, lowlives decided to do to these people makes me ill.  i've always been a big dateline fan but did not like some of the things said tonight.  i won't be watching for a while!
I really think that those two guys who committed this crime should be given the death penalty....They are not needed in this world. They are evil and should be put out of this world..
I just finished watching thi show. What a horrid experience that family went through. My thoughts and prayers go out to the father/husband and the rest of the family. I would be interested in knowing if the offenders did indeed get a life sentence and if they will be killed-an eye for an eye!
i HAVE HAD MEDICAL PROBLEMS IN THE LAST FEW YEAR BUT AFTER READING YOUR DEVATSTING STORY ON DATELINE...I REALIZE I HAVED NO PROBLEMS..MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU TO HAVE THE COURAGE TO SURVIVE WITHOUT W=YOUR WINDOERFUL FAMILY...YOU CAN DO IT..I PRAY FOR YOU TODAY AND ALWYAS

I logged n here hoping to find some info about the three people that were killed and perhaps donate something to whatever fund was being set up.  as per the account in tonights Dateline.
Dennis asks what could have stopped this crime before the murders and VanZant says if the father was not asleep on the porch the murderers would have just broken in and not escaleted to this level of violence - once again in American we blame the victim - what about the monsters who did this crime?  Can we not fall asleep on our sunporch and expect our family to be alive when we wake up? Why can we not assign blame where it is due -the people who commit the crime are guilty - who cares if they were tucked in at night growing up - this level of violence is beyond any excuse.  Enough!
I was so touched by the story. I will pray for the doctor and his family.  These criminals should get the death penally
This is a tragic case of our justice system failing not only this family but our entire country.  Criminals have more rights than the law abiding system.  We live in a country where our government pays $400 for toilet seats but we can't afford to build prisons and pay corrections employees the wages they need to do a good job.  As a former law enforcement officer I shed tears for these innocent victims.  How many more innocent people have to die before our political entities take action to stop this.  I'll continue to pay for the Petit family.
I was very disheartened that you missed a summary regarding possible survival in a situation like the Petit family.  Instead of leaving the viewer (naturally)saddened or scared - why not offer expert advise?
I was extremely moved by this dateline episode. This story was terrifying, yet shocking. There is a scornful feeling in my heart for the two men who has committed this murder. God bless the Petit family. I hope for the bless. This dateline episode has truly changed my life.

This event is such a tragedy, it brings tears to my eyes. I feel so much for the husband and lone surviver and pray he can carry on. I heard his eulogy, and it was as eloquent as any in that situation. I say God bless that man and to the his family, whom I knew he truly loved........Rick from Indiana.......
My name is Fran and I am a senior citizen.   A very frightened one.  As a child I walked thru back lots in the city to go get milk from High's for my mother (alone and after dark).  Now I am afraid to walk 20 feet to my own mailbox.   Less than a mile from where I live (in Brooklyn) the Bloods gang are and in Curtis Bay we have the Curtis Bay Posse.  Why?

What has happened to our young people?  I heard something on TV that said:  The end of the Sixties was the beginning of the end of Innocense.  I believe that wholeheartedly.  I am so sad and so ashamed of some of our Americans.   Don't they know we live in the land of the free?  I used to hear my Mother say, your father would turn in his grave had he lived to see all of this.   Now I believe I understand that statement.

My heart, my prayers, and my deepest sympathy is being sent to Mr. Petit and his family.  I pray that anyone who heard him speak at his family's memorial will do as he suggested.   Love your family, fight for a cause, a reputable one, help your neighbor.

It really is sad when such a horendous tradgety occurs that we stop and ponder the simpliest things which should have been taught our children at toddlerss and little people.

Thanks for allowing me to express my thoughts.
I had not heard of this horrible crime.  My thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. Petit. I cried during your story and then went and locked my door.........

This is one of the most heart breaking stories that i have ever watch on your show. I hope justice will be served to the men who done this. One day they will have to stand before god and answer to him. I wish godspeed to the Dr. and a speedy recovery for not only his body, but his heart as well. May god bless you and help you through all your pain.
Thank you for your piece on the horrible tragedy of
this Connecticut family.  The strength and dignity of the doctor is truly admirable and we should all take heed of his message.  What disturbs me about this story is that somehow I feel these women's lives could have been saved.  Your piece stated that the bank manager called the police dept. at 9:20am.  Surely they gave the dept. this family's address.
WHAT WERE THEY DOING FOR 25 MINUTES???  They should
have been at the scene before she even arrived home
from the bank.  As a society, we correctly recognize and applaud public officials for bravery and work well done.  We must also criticize when somehow things go wrong in the hopes that perhaps it will change policy and we can avoid this type of tragedy to a clearly undeserving family.
Thank you for just going home. I understand you have a job to do, but this atrocity has completely rocked my community. We never even locked my doors growing up here. Everything is different now. I still think about the Petit family and the senselesness of what happened each day. It seems impossible to heal, but even more so when the horror is rehashed over and over.

On a side note, you should have just taken the merit. You would have been in Cheshire in 90 minutes.
Maybe this is good reason for the proposal that was (still is?) before the Texas Legislature.  You commit a heinous act like this triple murder.  You don't wait for 10 years on death row; you go straight to the front of the line..
I just wanted to be able to foward  a message to Dr. Petit - I watched Dateline tonight and my heart is breaking for a man and his family whom I  have never known or met.
I  want to say that I am praying that God will not only comfort you but give you an understanding of why this all happened to you.  I am so saddened  that not only the judicial system is to  blame at part but that there are people in this  world who thrive on hurting others who had nothing to do with what has ever happened to them in the past. There should be no justice for those with no morals.
God Bless and Keep you.

Just one more message - there is no better news team than those @ NBC. Starting with the TODAY SHOW right up to the 6:30 news and on to DATELINE.
You all are the BEST!!
Am so sorry for what happened to the Petit family.    Shouldn't the bank have immediately been put on lock-down not letting anyone in or out,as soon as they received the note?I'm sure  I'm probably not the only one thinking of this.Hope predaters like these are given much longer sentences.
I hate it when you do such an inrigueing expose', then at the end of the broadcast, use the word "alleged."  Come on!!  Call the cold blooded murderers exactly what they are.  I HATE the word 'alleged' or 'allegedly' when you've shown guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt.  Stinking political correctness...
Fascinating report.  I live in very real dread that a young man I personally know will also make similar headlines one day.  He is a soul mate of my son.  They are both incarcerated along with 2 other young boys in local jails for the same type petty crimes as those the younger man had commited in his teens while honing his craft.  A book I read trying to come to grips with his choices helped me tremendously;  The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout.  Everyone should read this book to gain a better understanding of pure evil.  And People of the Lie by Scott Peck, MD.  Normal people cannot grasp the concept of evil or a lack of conscience.  A large chunk of media offerings center around crime, its victims, the offenders or society's attempts to deal with it. To maintain our own sanity we want easy answers to these maddening questions. Or we just want it all to go away and we pretend it doesn't exist.  I don't want to sound preachy, but the situation goes all the way back to Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel.  What is really amazing is that Adam didn't kill Eve first.  All of us have the propensity for similar behavior and if given the right set of circumstances, pressure, boredom, opportunities.. I might be watching the same show from behind bars as well.  I hope it was a healing process to shed light on evil  in Cheshire.  I have felt so relieved to discuss my son's issues rather than hide behind a facade of middle class, small town perfection.  The report was well done and honored the family's memory.  Thank you Dateline MSNBC for covering the hard stories of life delicately, with heart and conviction.  I only wish that in exposing the timeline of the perps actions, we could somehow learn how to prevent it in the future.  I watch the LOCKUP series addictively.
I saw the show tonight. OMG. How could something like that happen? Wonderful reporting like always. Dateline does a great job. They touched my heart.
i watched this on the news.....that is crazy....i feel so sorry for the husband/dad as he has to deal with this tragic thing everyday........wow
How irresponsible and shocking that you would blame the sole survivor in the most horrific and devastating crime spree that anyone could face. It wasn't enough that this man had his family stolen from him, but you were there to plant the idea that it was his fault because he fell asleep on the couch! You really make me sick. You should be brought before an ethics board for your sickeningly irresponsible suggestion. You have to live with yourself for being careless and for lacking any speck of human compassion, but remember that there is a man who has to live without his beautiful family. A more tragic loss can not be suffered than to lose your children and spouse, unless it is the loss of your entire family and a callous fool pointing a finger at you for being the cause.
I am truely disturbed by the story of this family's ordeal and I can find myself pondering the question which troubles me everytime I see a story like this, "Why are the people resposible for this dead?"  I have no faith or belief in "justice" system that continualy proves that we will never be safe because the criminal element will always have an advantage over everyone else since the rest of society isn't willing to meet these useless members of the human race on the same level.  I am still young, and I hope to have a family of my own, in fact I think so often of how wonderfull it would be to have daughter of my own.  I can safely say that without any reservation or thought for myself, if I was in the same horrible situation as this Father, I woul dallow nothing to stand in my way in "removing" these sad excuses for humans from their existence.  Some would say that this type of thinking is wrong, and that is the problem with this society, both here in the US and in other countries.  We are, as whole, a soft society that is not willing to do what it takes to strike fear and command respect from people like this.  This is all these people know, and no amount of compassion or rehabilitation will change that, or bring back the godd people that have affected in such horrible ways.  I truely hope that someone out there has had enough and makes sure that these 2 individuals never make it to see the inside of a prison.  Someone has to do something since our "justice" system is obviously incapable of handling the removal of garbage such as these 2.
Last night I watched the "Killings in Connecticut" and just wanted to cry, which I did.  Originally from Connecticut (Torrington), I couldn't believe what I was watching.  My heart and prayers go out to Dr. Petit and the citizens of Cheshire.  When will the "system" get it through their ? brains ? that when sentences are given, those sentences should mean the "FULL" time should be served!  Those guys should  NEVER have been released early.  How many more families will have to go through something like this before it sinks in?  I'm appauled!
please let us heal you keep bring this to the for front do you not think that we do not know what happened i am part of the family and we know what happened very well we live with it everyday but the person who is going through the worst of it is my cousin bill so please let it be  thank you
What is so revealing about this case is that the Left, the current leaders of Congress, the ACLU, and so forth is that these groups can't and won't protect us from these types of killers. We are not safe in our homes. Killers like those that murdered the Petits are given and were given multiple chances to behave in society and these groups continue to release them into society under the idea of a "second chance" until they really commit a heinous crime. Then, the justice system finally acts and permannently incarcerates these people, but by then the cost is a lovely, hardworking familiy like the Petits.

The great advantage of the "3 strikes and your out" laws are that they remove these criminals from our streets and keep us safe. These laws have been proven to drop the crime rate substantially after implementation. These laws need to be expanded to include juveniles and include permananent incarceration. The wail and cry that would go forth about including juveniles would be that these juveniles "wouldn't be given a chance" but after 3 strikes, I would say they had all the chances necessary to understand that they need to behave as the rest of us do naturally in society. The other cry is the ongoing cry is that these people have redeemable social value which they do not, otherwise they would behave.

The prison system has to be funded and expanded at whatever necessary cost to remove these people from society permanently. These criminals who are multiple offenders of various crimes which may at first be non-violent, but because they continue to act criminally, the potential to act violent is there and they must be removed after 3 convictions. We can not take the risk of additional sacrifices of our citizens like the Petits. Multiple convicted felons don't "get it" when it comes to civil behavior. They have to be insulated from us. More prisons will be required if the Congress and the President do not enforce the law about immigration which currently they do not.

Currently, 11 million potential criminals are here, as they are already violating the law by being in the country illegally and consuming tax payer resources like fuel, education and health care. The President and the Congress should be subject to class action law suits for not enforcing the law as it is written as it is their sacred duty to the Constitution to uphold the law.

The only remedy left to Dr. Petit is the extermination of these killers. They have no social value and their Maker can sort out their moral value when dead. Although again, since there has not been a lethal injection in CT since 2005, I'm sure the same people who are charged with protecting us will fail to bring proper justice to Dr. Petit and Connecticut citizens for these awful, brutal murders.

Sincerely,

Dan Fleckenstein
Grand Blanc, MI

Sincerely,

It was mentioned in your news story about the horrific murders in Cheshire, Connecticut that the local townspeople acted out of "panic" when sales of  home security systems and hand guns increased in the aftermath. Is this panic, or a rational response, acknowledging that the state & local government is not in the business of protecting its citizens?

However, an impressive job was certainly done protecting the killers once back in custody.  The security provided for them was of the type usually reserved for visiting foreign dignitaries.
What did you really expect?  What were you looking for in Cheshire that you couldn't find in your own neighborhood?  Nobody wants this misfortune and the media circus that follows to occur in their neighborhood.  Nobody.  It's unfortunately that it took you 4 hours to figure out something which is so obvious to the rest of us.
This e-mail is in reference to your visit to Cheshire on Monday Sept 10th.  First I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to follow up on how people are coping with the terror that took place at 300 Sorghum Mill Drive. I myself do not live in this neighborhood but do live close by and my heart goes out to everyone from the Sorghum Mill Dive neighborhood, to the firefighters, the local police, the bank, the Petit family and everyone in the entire town.  I was raised in Cheshire, and now My husband and I raised our two children 17 & 12 in Cheshire and I can tell you I think about this event every day, Rainy days like today just bring me back to this event, driving into Maplecroft plaza to get groceries at Stop and Shop makes me think about it, just driving down Mountain Road passing Sorgham Mill Drive makes my skin crawl.  The healing process for myself comes with the need to find peace with why two men went from having robbed houses before and never hurting the people inside to picking the Petit home to then terrorize a doctor, his wife and two daughters over the course of seven hours before ending their rampage with gasoline and a match. Will we ever really come to know the truth about what happened on Sorgham Mill Drive that day so we can all truly start to heal.
I watch dateline everytime it is on the air. Last night got to me. (sept 10th) What a sad sorry. I am a 45 year old man. I cried like a baby! I have a wife and two daughters. My heart goes out to the Dr. and his family. I could not imagine that happen to anybody. The amotion he must be going though. I believe in the justice system but these two thugs should not get a trail. Take them right to the eletric chair or shot them and put us out of our misery. These two guys are thugs!!! I hope the Dr can make it though life after this tragic event. GOD BLESS THE DOCTOR!!!! I do not think I could go on with life if this happen to me. Take one day at a time Doctor,
This story has shocked and horrified most of the state.  The idea that it could have been (and could be) any one of us, that our government had a hand in allowing these men out of prison when they never should have been released... that there are others who have been let out, who could be as sick as these two were.

I lay awake all night, every night for a month after the news broke on this story.  I felt victimized myself, though I didn't know the family, live halfway across the state, and had no other personal association with this case.  It is my and many others' worst nightmare.  I am sure I was not the only person unable to sleep for a long time after these crimes occurred.

I had just been able to relax and sleep again, without constant worry or replaying this scene over and over in my mind.  I was even in the grocery store one day when I saw the family on the cover of People magazine!  This is insane, it has been a circus for us in Connecticut - I do not have an anxiety disorder, I am an emotionally intelligent person, but this case has horrified us all, and the constant news stories every day for a month afterward has made many of us afraid to even do something as benign as turn on the weather.

This is why the media coverage on these types of stories can be intrusive.  I know that everyone wants to know why, but it has been said before - there are no answers to that question.  We will never know why.  We can only speculate, and I'm sure even those responsible don't know why.

I can only imagine the horror of waking up every day, driving to work, or walking my dog past the Petit home and what the neighborhood must go through for their healing.  It's unfortunate that the media can't just leave them alone.

Think about how you would feel if your next door neighbor, who you were friends with, was undergoing this horror while you were sleeping or having your morning coffee.  Think about it.  And the healing time involved afterward.

Please just leave us in Connecticut and the families, friends and neighbors alone.  Komisarjevsky's ex girlfriend might want to talk but the rest of us don't, and we don't want to hear it anymore for awhile, so give us all some space.

There is no reason this story couldn't have waited six months or a year, when we have all moved away from the very high emotions involved.
I learned of the horrible events & traggic loss of Jennifer, Hayley & Michaela in PEOPLE Magazine. Just as reading the story, your broadcast brought floods of tears, a sorrowful soul! My heart aches heavily for Dr. Petit, as I, too, have lost my family (although very different circumstances)! I thank God everyday I still have my daughter, Destynie. Bill has a long road ahead - please give him your prayers, support & space he needs to deal & heal from these massive wounds!! May you feel God's grace, Dr. Petit, and surround yourself in His warm embrace. My prayers are with you.
In Christ,
Kelley
I wholeheartedly agree with Dan Fleckenstein's comments - EVERY SINGLE WORD!!  I'm a 45 year-old woman and I honestly can say I do not feel safe in
this society.  Before I get in my car, I have to look
in the back seat.  I don't even think about going to
any store in the evening (ever) unless I'm with a group of people.  I pray my child will never be taken
by a pedophile.  I have recurring nightmares about getting chased through a "bad" part of town.  Please everyone try to vote in politicians who really care
about providing TRUE SAFETY IN OUR SOCIETY.  The Petit family deserved as much.  Also, perhaps talk about a sately plan with your family (i.e. what if? scenarios) - lock your doors, set your alarm, etc.
How can we give billions to Iraq (forgive me for bringing this into the picture) but not even a "few" billion to build more prisons???  I'm sick and tired of this s*#t!!!!!!!
