Investigation of bike path rapist reflected city

One of the safest towns in America reignites a cold case that haunted police for decades after the mysterious killing of a middle class professor's wife and mother of four. Keith Morrison travels to Buffalo, N.Y. to report on the death of Joan Diver and the possible return of the town's "bike path rapist," Dateline NBC on Sept. 5 at 10 p.m.

Buffalo, NY – The City of Good Neighbors is "not a small town, but a big room with a large couch."  Local historian Bill Zimmerman says that it’s the type of town where everyone knows everyone -- or soon will.  From my experience working on this story Buffalo truly is a city of good neighbors.

Perhaps one of the strangest coincidences in this story that reflects Buffalo’s small town feel is that Anthony Capozzi’s sister Pam Guenther attended the same high school only a couple of years behind Altemio Sanchez.

The multi-agency task force was made up of more than a dozen investigators; each brought with them their own personal history of the legendary bike path rapist.

Bike Path Rapist Take Force at Niagara Square, Buffalo, NY

Chief Scott Patronik from the Erie County Sheriff’s Department grew up with Detective Lissa Redmond who happened to attend the same high school as one of Altemio Sanchez’ rape victims.

State Police Captain Captain Steven Nigrelli’s father was a Sergeant in the Buffalo Police Department and his uncle was an investigator on the bike path rapist’s second murder victim.

Amherst Police Detective Joseph LaCorte was on patrol when Linda Yalem was killed in 1990 and has continued to work on the case since.

The tragic killing of Joan Diver, mother of four, brought the four agencies together four agencies -- the Amherst Police Department, the Buffalo Police Department, Erie County Sherriff's Department and the New York State Police. With the advent of modern-day DNA technology identifying the assailant's genetic make up as possibly Hispanic and the unprecedented cooperation and information-sharing between the agencies, the 20-year-old cold case was solved quickly.

Within two months of the formation of the task force, the suspect and admitted bike path rapist and killer was apprehended.

Many of the investigators consider this the best case of their career, not simply for solving a case but also for the silver lining of the investigation: the exoneration of Anthony Capozzi, wrongly imprisoned for more than 22 years.

As Detective Alan Rozansky said "I told my kids, I’ve been here 36 years. You'll hardly remember who I arrested. But you remember the one person that was innocent that got out because of our police work."

A party to celebrate Anthony Capozzi’s release was thrown by the very same restaurant where Sanchez had dinner with his wife and where investigators collected the glass and napkin that yielded DNA evidence that linked Sanchez to nine rapes and three murders.

In the end, Altemio Sanchez apologized for his crimes at his sentencing. He is serving 75 years but that brings no comfort to his victims or the children who will grow up without their mother.

We are so happy that this monster was finally caught. Adding on to the small town aspect of Buffalo, I worshipped at the same church as Sanchez, went to Elementary school and sat with one of his son's on the bus home and watched Sanchez coach my brother in baseball. It affected everyone and as much as I pray for the victims and thier families I pray for the Sanchez family as well.
I am a resident of Amherst.  I lived less than a mile from the bike paths that this man used to torture the women of my community.  I am 26 years old.  I don't remember a time that this man was not feared until now.  I would like to thank the officers who were involved with capturing this monster. (Incase some people don't know, later the same day he killed Joan Diver, he was at a party with his wife smiling for pictures and having a great time.)  I no longer have to live in fear of this man.  I can't imagine living anywhere else!!
i think it is so sad when people are wrongfully accused, and then the way it is casually put out to the public. i think people should be paid handsomly for all the time they had to stay locked up for something they did not do and the system failed them by taking all those years away from them.
i CANT BE MORE EXCITED THAT THEY ARE GOING TO SHOW THIS SPECIAL TONIGHT. I AM GLAD THAT MONSTER IS NOW BEHIND BARS AND I CAN ONCE AGAIN WALK THE BIKE PATH WITH OUT FEAR!
I get really scared walking on the walking path close to my house. I hear that you better look beside you and next to you every time you go walking. It's never too late to get caught by the wrong person. Thanks for this email.

OMG -- this goes to show how little we actually know about the people living next door to us.  Spooky, isn't it?
I am very thankful Sanchez was caught but somehow in tonights story they glossed over the fact the police called off the search.  The officer on TV said she was something like 80 yards off the path.  That is absolutely untrue!  I was a part of the civilian search team....
I just want to say best of luck to Ant.  He's an amazing person.
I watched tonight and in awe of the dedicated officers who would not stop until they convicted the Bike Path Rapist and helped ensure an innocent man was released.

Was wondering if The Bike Path Rapist of the detectives ever figured out why he stopped for ten years.  It seems unusual to me.

Thanks again for your story
I'm sorry, but to make light of that situation is ridiculous. A man lost 22 years of his life that he will never get back. It's sad to know that an innocent man can be convicted and spend 22 years before being released. Sad, sad, sad. My heart goes go to the victims of all family's involved.
maybe someone should fix the identifying text on buffalo's david statue replica (supposedly made from a direct cast of the original). i believe it should read "Michelangelo"..... as in "Michelangelo Buonarroti". not "Michael  Angelo". i could be wrong.
Buffalo truly is a town where everyone knows everyone. I too live in Amherst - only a few miles from Altemio Sanchez's home. His sons went to high school and played sports with my brother, my husband and I frequently dine at the restaurant where Sanchez's DNA was collected, and my mother's friend is the sister of Anthony Cappozi (who was wrongfully convicted of the Delaware Park rapes committed by Sanchez.)  It's both scary and disgusting to know so many of us interacted with this evil man, not even knowing it. I don't ever remember going on a bike path without fearing that someone was lurking behind the trees. This man placed fear into everyone in our community and tore apart countless families. Not only do the friends and families of his murder and rape victims have to suffer, but Sanchez took away over 20 of the most important years of Anthony Cappozi's life. Also, Sanchez has forever changed the lives of his innocent wife and sons. I couldn't begin to imagine how it would feel to know the man you knew as your husband or father committed these horrible acts. It's hard to comprehend that one sick, evil man can ruin the lives of so many innocent people. I am grateful that he has finally been caught; even though nothing will bring back the lives of the lost mothers, sisters, daughters and friends, or the 22 years taken from Cappozi. Buffalo is a city filled with amazing people that continuously pull together helping each other during hard times. With all the suffering these families have endured, it amazes me that the one thing they consistently mention is the overwhelming support they receive from their community. I feel very lucky to live in this "city of good neighbors."
We all are thankful for  Detective Dennis Delano.  His hard work and insight in solving this case gave  the women of Erie County ability to enjoy walking and jogging outdoors in Erie County and gave Anthony Capozzi his freedom. The City of Buffalo  and their police department are very fortunate to have you as an employee.   Thank you, Detective Delano for your undying hard work and success even though the Erie County DA didn't think it was possible.
His apology was not for the lives he took and destroyed he committed. His cold apology and anger was for being caught. He was so defiant and so sure he could not be tied to his dirty deeds when he was first arrested. But the excellent work of the FBI forensic and profile team and local law enforcement finally had the technology of new DNA that pointed to no one else but him. His Uncle could not lie or change the DNA results to free him this time. I continue to wish his victims well and hope all can find some peace and heal from their losses and his Family from the lies, deceit ,and hurt he has caused them.
I am from Buffalo so I watched the broadcast last evening.  What an incredible story.  My hat is off to Detective Dennis Delano.  His face and voice were pure Buffalo, and he represents the work ethic and tenacity that typifies a "Buffalonian".  The Capozzi family handled themselves with such grace and dignity.  I cannot imagine what I would do in a similiar circumstance.  Just a side note, my parents live in Amherst near the bike path and just before Christmas, this past year, my sister and a friend were out walking their dogs near there.  They saw a strange man come out of the wooded area.  He stopped and stared at them.  My sister said that he "gave her the creeps".  They quickly headed back home.  A couple of weeks later, when Altemio Sanchez was finally arrested, my sister recognized him as the "creepy" man she saw near the woods.  This guy was operating in broad daylight.  Unreal.  May God bless all of the victims in this case, including Sanchez's wife and children.
All I have to say is that, just because this man, was a well known, successful, active in their community and so forth, doesn't mean that he can't be capable of doing these crimes. It doesn't surprise me one bit. Because frankly, I don't trust a man in a suit! Here they put an innocent man in prison man, for 22 years, for a crime that he did not commit - but what put him beyond bars was because he was "schizophrenic". That doesn't mean, that he was mentally ill (that is the medical terms they all use.) It is a disorder.

Enough said.  I am glad that the innocent man, is FREE! It is so, true; with this statement, "It is easier putting a person in jail than getting them out."
WOW!  This is both a happy and sad story.  My heart goes out to all the famlies, friends and communities involved.   I guess you never do know who your neighbors are.  I hope Mr. Capozzi enjoys the rest of his life as nothing he is ever given can make up for the time he's lost.
Ed,

You're right.  The statue has it wrong.  I thought I was the only person who would notice that quick glance at the title.
Ed & Marlene,
Michael Angelo is correct. So is Michelangelo. Either way is accepted. The statue is from the original marble casting & dedicated to Buffalo in 1903. It really is a beautiful piece, as is the rest of Buffalo. Now, especially the wonderful task force that solved a mystery that has had women of this city in fear for years. My thoughts go to his wife. How did she NOT know something was amiss? I feel bad for her to have to live with this past.
why did it take so long for authorities to determine just who was     doing the crimes?  Lots of comments about the citiens of Buffalo being friendly, looking out for others, caring enuf - yet the autthorities didnt match the citizens' looking out for others.  They didnt join up togethr to work with each other until many many years later, many rapes laater, and several deaths later??  No friends in positions of authority?
I blame the uncle of the killer who failed to fess up to the cops  that his nephew borrowed his auto.  This uncle covered for his nephew.   The killer could have been captured much earlier and thus fewer victims and lives destroyed.
I commend Detective Delano for his courage and strength to bring truth to light and use his experience and knowledge to bring justice. We need more people like him to make this world a better place. THANK YOU, DETECTIVE DELANO for standing up for the truth and not letting those crooks in power influence law to cover up lies.
A real side benefit to all of this is that Frank Clark is leaving office as DA. That particular nightmare has also ended.
Did anyone else notice how the name was spelled on the statute of David?
The American Injustice system needs to be reformed.
I am really happy they caught the right person and got him off the streets but this shows that the investigators need to look a lot closer to evidence and th eperson they are convicting before they put them away. This happens to so many people and they didn't even do anything adn now their lives are almost done without their families. Just sad that our system out there will just about take anyone they think did the crime.
GOD BLESS OFFICER DENNIS DELANO!  THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE WITH MORE PEOPLE LIKE HIM.
