J.K. Rowling brings Meredith Vieira to tears

In her first interview since the final chapter of the Harry Potter series went public, J.K. Rowling revealed the secrets she could never previously discuss to TODAY’s Meredith Vieira in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Rowling covered all topics including the rationale behind her plot choices;  the character she saved and the ones she decided to kill later in the writing process; what Harry, Hermione and Ron are up to these days; her plans for the future; and the way Harry Potter has saved her own life.

Meredith’s interview with Rowling airs both this morning and Friday on TODAY and in a one-hour Dateline special this Sunday.

But to give you a little taste, allDAY talked to Meredith about the most poignant moments in the hours she spent with Rowling.

allDAY: So, after all you read about Jo going into this interview, what surprised you the most?

Meredith: I had read that she was not an easy interview; I think “aloof” was the word I read.

But I found her very much the opposite.  I found her warm, I found her charming.  I found her protective of her material, but not proprietary.

In so many other interviews she had to be guarded.  There was still this whole series and she didn’t want to reveal secrets before now.

allDAY: There were a few really delightful off-camera moments with Jo and the children during the interview.  Did any of those in particular stand out for you?

Meredith: She asked how many of us had gone to the last page first and a few of us raised our hands and she said, “How could you!,” (as an author would).  She was teasing the kids.

I love that she was so protective of them during the interview.  She didn’t want to spoil this book for anybody.  That spoke a lot to Jo, the person, not just the author.

allDAY: While she was quite concerned about not spoiling the book for anyone during the portion of the interview when the children were present, you also got a chance to speak with her one-on-one when went into more detail about the book and also spoke openly about her own life.  What struck you about that portion of the interview?

Meredith: She talked about Harry saving her, financially, and him being her touchstone for 17 years, that’s important.

She also said her biggest regret is not telling her mother about Harry.  At the end of the day her biggest regret is that her mom never knew about the books, and if she had she would have been at every book opening, every signing.  That was such a lovely moment.

allDAY: It was a story about her mother that actually brought you to tears at one point when the cameras were off….

Meredith: Yes, she had been talking about her mom having MS and a case where she declined very rapidly.  I starting talking to her about my husband having MS and I just connected with her on a special level.

We were just talking about the strength of character of people dealing with illness – not the caretaker, the person with the illness – and I felt a bond with her.  Then I was embarrassed because I started crying a little.  I said I didn’t mean to cry, and she said, “Don’t worry, I’m usually the one crying!”

allDay: Of all the things she talked about – and she talked about a lot! -- what are you most excited to share with the TODAY audience?

Meredith: I think they’re going to be most excited to know why she killed off who she didn’t, and the choices she made throughout the series.

I was very excited about this interview and enjoyed it very much...Ms. Rowling is a lovely person!  My oldest son finished the book last night and I this morning (just in time).  We used our DVR to tape the show so that my husband and son could watch it when they finish the book!  Your show reminded me of the days when I couldn't wait for "The Wonderful World of Disney" to show on a Sunday night...what a great way to complete our reading!  Great show!!!
What a wonderful interview!  I've enjoyed all the Harry Potter books and Meredith you did a wonderful job with this interview getting JK Rowling to open up and talk.  It's great how she loves her work and enjoys speaking with kids about it.

Thanks for the great work!
Well, from all your loyal fans JK, we just want to let you know your mom would be PROUD !
I love to hear about someone like her that was struggling and became successful on her terms! My son is a huge  fan of Harry Potter. You go GIRL!!!
I loved this interview! My friends and I are HUGE Harry Potter friends, and we were just little children when the first book came out, so Harry has been something that was there for us since the very begining. Its that one thing we knew was always there. I remember when we felt like things weren't going our way, we'd pull out our favorite wizard to remind us there was something we could always count on being there. The books were the cause of many of our conversations, arguments and thoughts! We can't believe its really over!
The Harry Potter books finally got my children to read. JK created a world of magic for all of us, parents and children alike, that we continued to immerse ourselves in with pleasure. ALthough I am sorry to see it end, I cannot wait for the final two movies and for Harry Potter World! JK you are a wonderful, gifted writer, and you have brought joy to your millions of fans with these books. I cannot wait to see what you write next, and just want you to know that I believe your mother "knows" and is very proud of you. Your series will be read and re-read by generations to come, and inspire many more to read. Thank you.
JK, Your's and Harry's magic will be with me forever!!! <3
I am a 77 year old nana whose grandaughter introduced her to Harry Potter.  We both have read the whole series and love to discuss it and get each other's point of view.  J.K. Rowling has  a wonderful imagination and and also the ability to put it on paper.  Each book has been tough to put down once you start it, but then when you are getting to the end you want to slow your reading pace so that the book will last a longer time.  I think I enjoyed this 7th book almost the best, but there again, I loved them all.  I also wish I could write.
I am to a single mother and knows the struggle of everyday life. J.K. Rowlings give me hope that anything is possible and with persistence and detemination, I too can overcome. I have never read any of the Harry Potter books, but am interested in the whole series and sharing it with my 8 year old daughter. I can't afford to buy any of them.
Congratulations J.K. for all the wonderful work you have done and all of your accomplishments.
I just want to say that HP is indeed the most exciting book I've ever read. The characters are all great and the story affected me even on a personal level. I did love the idea of having to look forward to the next installment but now its finally over. I must confess some things in the last book didn't end in the way I want it to but J.K. pulled it off wonderfully. The twists and the secrets all fit masterfully. It's sad it has to end but it's been a great journey. The story and the characters will stay with me all my life. I will never forget the sleepless nights and nervous, hanging anticipation I got with reading all of the books. No other book gave me that kind of experience...THANKS J.K.!!!!!!

I absolutely, LOVED the Harry Potter series! I really want her to write more on the subject, but she definitely deserves a little break after seventeen years of writing. J.K. has such a great sense of humor, and she has the ability to put her imagination on paper. I am an eleven year old, and in the third grade I had a college reading level, thanks to J.K.'s masterpiece. Thank you, so much, J.k.!
i really wanna thank j.k.r for that great series.i am really sad that it have to be finished so soon when we were ecxpecting more.i havent actully read the deathly hallows yet but i am sure i would be satesphied with the ending as everyone say and i am sure that no matter what happens at the end i would feel that I OWN THIS WHOLE WORLD thanks again jo and i wish you the best in your career.
This was a great series!  I started reading the first book in a book store.  After I finished the first book in a few hours, my son was shocked.  He thought it was a kiddie book.  Of course, he then did the same thing.  We both continued all the way to the end.  We both had to buy #7, since we both wanted to read it right away.  I was in line at WalMart at midnight when the book came out.  It was a really an experience for a 50+.  My son was shocked that I went out at that hour.  He was also out with his college friends getting copies of the book.  What a wonderful series.  I can't wait to read anything that J.K. Rowling writes.  She is awesome.
iam sanaz from iran.i,m 27 and work as a doctor.me my brother and my dad really loved harry potter series and i always asked god that this wonderful story never ends up.i just wanted to thanks mereddith to bring mrs.rowling and making such a great interview.i loved all parts of books but the part that made me really sad was sirius death.wished it could never happen.
Mrs JK Rawlings did a exceptional job with the Harry Potter books. She has brought a whole new generation to have a love of reading. I totally respect that. That is what we need more of, exceptional writers, so that we can always be inspired to read. So my hat is off to you Mrs. Rawlings. Thank you for Harry Potter and thank you for a job well done. Hope to more books in the future, when you are ready.
I have to admit I was a major doubter of Harry Potter. I did not think that the books were good and never read them until after I watched the fourth movie. Then I read ALL the books and waited in line with my friends at midnight for the seventh. I read it in one and a half days! It was glorious. Thank you for such a wonderful series. Please write more!!!!
Ms. Rowlings, I just wanted to say thank you for the escape you provided me with for the past couple of years.  Life isn't always easy, I think that is something you as well as each of your fans can say, but you have made it easier.  I know its over and it really brings tears to my eyes every time i think that there is never going to be that moment of waiting for the next installment.  You have made me laugh and definately cry time and time again, but you have also made me see that through it all as long as you are alive there is the possibility of better days.  I wish you all the best life has to offer you, you defiantely deserve it for what you have given this world.  Thank you for sharing Harry with us for all these years.
i thought the HP books were just for kids until my sisiter forced me to read the first on. i expected to read the first chapter and hand it back to her with general groans of immature childish nonsence. HOW WRONG WAS I? Wonderful, intricate, creative, superb and many more adjectives that can just begin to describe the splender that is the Harry Potter universe. Yes i dressed up as A wizard for the release of the last book and even had a broomstic to boot! Shame it's over now, although too much of a good thing and all that.
i haven't read any of the potter books or seen any of the movies. i just really got interested with all the hype about the seventh book. i'd like to ask the  author one question. if the books brought so many people back to reading and families together (a mother of fifty and a son of seventeen both standing in lines at different stores just to get the last book) why did she have to end the books? why not keep the books going. like come out with a new one at longer intervals. hopefully she will write another book and series that will have the same re-action to people as this one did. having said that i think i will go to the store and start to read the books and after  each book i will watch each movie. its been a long time since i've read a book that i couldn't put down. i love a book that you can actually feel that you actually feel like your in the places that the writer writes about.
I'm 54, my son 30 this year.We have grown together reading this book. He lives In Phoenix now but with each book and movie we talk several times a day about what has happen and what we think. With this last book we laughed and cried alot. Because of you JR I am looking forward to having grandkid more then ever. I have collected everything "Harry Potter" books, wands,Sorting hat and much more, In hopes of one day sharing it all again with my grandkids. Thank you soooo much for this wonderful gift you gave to so many people and for the next ones to come!
It is truly inspiring to see how many people have been led to READING by these books---I wouldn't know a fraction of what I know if it hadn't been for reading since I was a child--Hiding in my treehouse in Texas---I will try to find another author as exciting and challenging as Ms Rowling-may she enjoy life and her family and friends.
I AM A 60 YEAR OLD NURSE.  HARRY POTTER HAS TAKEN ME AWAY FROM THE SERIOUSNESS OF LIFE FOR A WHILE.  I LOVE IT WHEN GOOD OVERCOMES EVIL AND EVERYONE LIVES HAPPILY EVER AFTER.  J K, PLEASE WRITE MORE AND GIVE ME SOME MORE HAPPINESS TO LOOK FORWARD TO.  I READ THESE BOOKS WITH MY GRAND DAUGHTERS.
I bought the first book for my grandson, and since I never give any book to a child that I haven't read first to assure myself of the content, I consumed it in a matter of hours. I have looked forward to each and every consecutive book (and movie) since. I have bought 2 copies of each book so that I could read them at the same time as my grandson. As so many of the others here have said, these books opened up a new world to him and he is now an avid reader too. Thank you, Jo, for all that you have brought to us - yound and old - for we are much richer for having Harry and his friends in our lives.
Indeed it takes a person with profound amaganation to write Story's Like Harry Poter. Ms Rowlings I hope you never lose the nitch to write. I think it helps childern learn the pleasure's of reading.
J.K. Rowling,
You are an extraordinary author!
I first learned about Harry Potter from an attorney who was on the same plane I was on to Boston. Ever since, I have been hooked. Once started, I could not put the books down. I read them day and night-long.
I am saddened that the series is over, but glad I got to read about it.
Just thinking about the magic you have shared with us, your readers, in Harry Potter brings me to tears! You have really touched a lot of people's lives and have changed what people think about children's novels. I do pray that someday, very soon Harry Potter will be a classic. Thank you for taking me to a magical land.
OH my gosh, this series is the best series EVER!!! When i read these books, it created a world where i could sink into and not have to worry about my surroundings. I mean that would end up being imune to anything going on around me. I cried without realizing it when Dobby the house elf died, (that was one of the only times too). Thank you so much J.K. Rowling, you made my imagination soar, and you helped me to learn not to take my friends for granted.
I GUESS ITS BEEN 9 TIMES NOW THAT I HAVE COMPLETED THE SERIES. I AM ONCE AGAIN TO THE MIDDLE OF OOTP. I CANT IMAGINE HAVING LIVED THIS LIFE WITHOUT THIS EXPERIENCE. IM A MOTHER OF 4 AND A MUGGLE, AND IF ANYONE WAS WONDERING, IT BRINGS YOU TO ABSOLUTE TEARS AND PUTS TINGLES DOWN YOUR SPINE EVERY SINGLE TIME! WHO IMAGINED A NOVEL GETTING BETTER EVERY TIME? I GUESS I"LL JUST KEEP READING UNTIL I HAVE THE WILL TO PUT THEM DOWN FOR A WHILE AND OPEN SOMETHING NEW. THANKS JOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I notice that there are no negative comments. Is that because there was none? I find that hard to believe.
I am a 38 year old mother with a 12 year old daughter.  My daughter was introduced to the Harry Potter world in 3rd grade.  After she read the first two books, she told me that I 'had' to read them.  I wasn't interested, thinking it's for children and below my level of reading.  Then after she read the 3rd one, she was telling me I 'had' to read it.  I still waited and she completed the 4th book.  I saw the first 2 movies and enjoyed them.  So, knowing the books are always better, I finally picked them up.  I read books 1-5 in 6 weeks.  I couldn't put them down.  Then we went to the book releases for book 6 & 7 and this series has been the best we've ever read.  Thank you Jo for the most wonderful books and for bringing my daughter and I together in a world we could discuss for hours.  You're awesome and I wish you the best in your future stories!
I absolutely love your books J.K Rowling, and even though I am american I believe that a british Harry Potter is very cool. It has showed me a whole new side of british people.I cried during Fred's death the most because it was such a terrible loss. Especially when it was right after the time when Fred made up with Percy. You are a scientist of magic!!! Thankyou!
Wow J.K rowling,
The Harry Potter Series ARE THE BEST EVER!!!!! Seriously I love them all and I have read them all in order from 1-7 about 17 times! Every time I read them they never get repetitive and always are so interesting and funny to read. I started reading them when I was in 4th grade, and now im 29,(just got my PhD from Standford and now I'm a doctor!) I hope you write more and good luck to Harry, Hermione, and Ron!
An era has come to an end. What an end it was! My son would not have learned to read if it hadn't been for his passion for the wizarding world. He would read the book and listen to the cassettes. It worked great. Since the first, we have been to every local event for all the books and the movies. My son and I, and everyone I know are great fans. They especially enjoyed the readings of them by Jim Dale, he was brilliant. Thanks, J.K. for getting many learning disabled kids to want to read.
I love the interveiw and im only 12 but i cant wait till the encyclopedia comes out and i have so many questions about the harry potter sereies. If Rowling doesn't write the encyclopedia soon i don't know what im gonna do.I'm going to miss harry potter forever and it's my all time favorite. :[
