One of the things you may notice tonight as you watch our 11th "To Catch A Predator" investigation is how much more interaction there is between the men and the young woman we've hired to be our onsite decoy. In past investigations the young woman or young man typically invites the potential predator in, chats for a few seconds, and then disappears.

Here in New Jersey, where we've set up in a multi-million dollar home on the beach, our decoy Casey is able to have much longer conversations with the men. This gives us a keen insight into what they plan on doing to a young teen. Usually we mostly rely on the men's online chats with Perverted Justice decoys and while that does give us a graphic look at these guy's intentions, it is really startling to see them engage in the grooming process in real-time.

At the start of each of these investigations I'm never sure what to expect from the onsite decoy. They are usually college students who happen to look younger than they are, who have an interest in the theatre, and see this as a chance to perform and do something worthwhile in the process. All of the ones we've used have been sharp kids and have done a great job for us. Here in New Jersey, though, you'll see tonight Casey's work is extraordinary.

10:12 p.m.
A few months ago, in our Flagler Beach, Fla., investigation, we tried something different: a second location on the beach. Here in New Jersey, thanks to all the hard work of Mitch Wagenberg and his crew, we just about perfected it. It gives us the option of having the decoy invite the guys into a different setting. I wasn't sure it would work out as well as it did. Would the men be nervous about being seen in public with a young girl? What if a beachcomber walked by and spooked him?

As you'll see, it posed no problem at all. Several of our visitors seemed very comfortable in the beach chair. The real challenge was getting good, quality audio on the beach without having the men see a microphone. It's another technological feat. The microphones were hidden in seashells.

10:32 p.m.
I know I have said this before, but each time we do another "To Catch a Predator" investigation, I keep wondering if it's going to be the one where no one shows up. After all, this one is our 11th. We've conducted them in 8 different states now and 286 men have surfaced in the investigation over three years; 256 have been arrested and, as of this writing, 117 men have either pleaded guilty or been found guilty after a trial. You'd think word would get out -- and I suppose it has -- but here on the Jersey shore men are practically lined up at our door.

Many of them -- perhaps a third to a half -- know exactly what they've walked into as soon as they see me. In a few minutes you'll meet Michael Lubrano. He's 25 and comes to our house to meet a girl who told him she was 14. Here's another "To Catch a Predator first."

He brings marijuana and actually has Casey the decoy give it the smell test. Now listen to what he says when I walk out. He knows exactly who I am. In the back of my mind I'm thinking: How could a guy who "religiously" watches our show walk into one of our hidden camera houses? Listen to the compliment he gives me. For those of you who don't know, "Opie and Anthony" is a syndicated morning radio show.

10:44 p.m.
In this investigation we continue to see men from all walks of life and of all ages. Before the New Jersey operation is over we'll meet an engineer, a school bus driver, a former camp counselor, a retired fire fighter and, as you're about to see, a 33-year old Air Force mechanic named Ernest Timmons. He shows up after a sexually explicit conversation with a decoy posing as a 13-year-old girl. Watch how fast he moves after he comes into our house. I've never seen anything quite like this guy.

He's got his expensive digital camera in hand and ready to go as he tries to hustle Casey upstairs for some quick photos. There's a moment when our decoys tells him she wants to stay downstairs and talk first and that's when I sense he might be ready to take off. As I walk into the room and start to talk to him, he offers up his excuses: a big misunderstanding; a friend sent him.

While sweating profusely, he's sticking to his story. He tells me he's about to be deployed to Iraq. Apparently that's not going to be happening anymore.

your kids and all kids should be watching this now
I can't believe how crazy these guys to show up at these houses. After 3 years and 11 shows how stupid can these guys be ? It's hard to believe that show after show these guys just keep coming! When will there be a show that nobody shows up?
saw your show this eveing it was great. please come to rockland county n y
Do you even catch women predators?
Have you ever thought about using a boy decoy to see if you could catch some women predators? I would assume they are out there as well as men. it would be interisting to find out.
I don't condone what these men are doing at all.  First, what i don't think is fair is that your stings are always going after men. You hear alot about female teachers having sex with male students. When is there going to be one of these stings for women predators.  Second, Why is it against the law to have sex with a 14 year old when it is alright to marry a girl as young as 12 years old. I am almost possitive thats the age allowed in New Hampshire.  How many other states allow them under 16?
While I think what these men are doing is deplorable, I wonder if there really are teenage girls and boys online soliciting or looking for sex from adults?  If so, why is Dateline not looking at those individuals, entraping them and embarrassing them and their parents on national t.v.?  Also, are there never adult women soliciting from teenage boys?  The efforts of Datline seem to be one sided.  Please don't mistake this for sympathy to those men who have been caught.  I'm just wondering why there is not any balance on this situation as I'm sure it does exist.
I just want to know why some 53 yr old man thinks a 13 yr old girl would want to have sex or do anything with them?? at 13 I thought an 18 yr old was old.  I wish      Chris Hanson would ask that question.  I hope they keep doing these shows and get these freaks off the street. Thanks!!  dateline
Hey Chris dig this, First of all any person who harms or attmept to solicite sex from a minor is filth plain and simple. The deserve the worst the courts can do. That being said, you think you can tone down the "playing lawyer bit"...I mean you are confronting sickos and cowards after all, dont act so big and tough, like you are a prosecutor in court. And Frankly its not impressive, you are sensationalizing some pretty sick crimes and if anything you drive these freaks undergound, sooner or later these freaks are gonna hide deeper because they know about your sensationalized show, The better idea would be to ditch this show and let the cops do there work, you may have caught 200 but im sure you've driven many to be "more-careful"...so please stop acting like you are "that reporter" pressing the "hard issues" you are confronting cowards....you wanna impress me, go into the hood and setup one of you "shows" and confront some crack-dealing Gang-banger who are posioning kids...."To catch a drug dealer"....but i bet you wont do that will you, no of course not, that might be dangerous.....god you media reporter make me sick...but not as sick as the freak that hurt kids.
I Love this program.  I hope it makes idiots think before they act.  Thanks and I look forward to more shows.  I love how hard you are on these guys.
Chris, Keep it up!!! Get these degenerates off our streets!! And anyone who has a child in the home make sure you know what their doing online, keep those computers in a main family area.  No matter how much you want to believe that you have a good kid who would never chat with strangers online, or invite them over for sex.....wake up!  It's better to be safe than sorry.
Chris  you are awesome man I watch the show all the time.I died laughing because of the rediculous things they say when they get caught.I have two little girls and they are never out of my sight or my wifes sight.Keep up the good work. GOD Bless you and your taem.
Chris, I absolutely love all that you do but as a single mom,"To Catch a Predator" has to be one of the best but at the same time, one of the scariest. I have a 12 year old daughter and a 10 year old and this scum I see on television is my biggest fear for my girls. Although I talk to them openly about this and let my daughter watch a few episodes it is still so frightening that someone next door can be one of these guys, a man I date can be! You really have brought out alot I may have overlooked before and I thank you so much for that. Your poise and calmness with these men, so-called is so amazing Chris and I just want you to know I absolutely adore you and love you and again thank you.
Chris, I just want to say that my husband and I have seen every single one of your To Catch a Predator, and we're just amazed at the gall of these men.  However, we were wondering this.....how come all your potential predators are male?  Don't you think that there are just as many female predators out there that should be caught just as much as the men?  I'm a mother and grandmother but I have no qualms about female predators being caught, even if it turns out they, too, are mothers.  Predators are predators, and should be caught.  I would just think about your next Predator series is on catching women who prey on kids.  Otherwise, you are doing such a great service to kids.....keep up the great work!!!!
Strong show tonight (serious)

I have battled like I am sure that alot of parents have to make sure my kids are aware of how some people can be. I make sure that even though the show comes on at 10pm, they are awake to see it. Tonight we watched and have talked during the show about how to be safe. Make sure no matter what you continue to do what you do and catch as many as you can.
Why don't you provide any information to help people protect their children from online predators during your shows.  You direct people to your website but many of your viewers do not have internet connections.
Thank you Chris Hansen for doing what you do. I have a ten year old girl and hate to think that there are sickos out there that could think about doing those things to such young girls Keep up the good work
More proof that the USA is really a big sewer. Shows like JERRY SPRINGER, COPS, DOG the Bounty Hunter, Court TV, Cold Case Files, and the likes, just go to prove what people are really like there. Nothing but Dirty Laundry everywhere!! Al-Queda isn't destroying your country, you all are doing a fine jobs yourselves. Husbands killing wives and families, soldiers killing innocent people, druggies killing kids, gangbangers killing each other, cops on the take, Government on the take, businessmen on the take, churches stealing from the poor, religious people molesting everyone !! Are there any real people in the USA???? If you want to destroy a country, you do it from the inside, not the outside, and it looks like you're doing a great job destroying the USA.......Too bad, so sad....
chris u r doing a great job nail all these sick pepole they should be jailed for life dam pigs
Chris, I want to thank you for doing these shows about child predators online...both myself & my daughter have learned much from the series...as I write this message I see on CNN that there's a lawsuit being filed against the show...shame on those people, shame on them for trying to protect a child predator and shame on them for trying to villify your series...you have done a great service to not only to US communities but to communities all around the world...keep up the good work...hopefully the shows will make some people stop & think before they target kids or make parents more aware of the dangers that lurk online
Chris,

I am disturbed by the topic as any concerned person/parent should be.  I am even more floored with the stage/town upon you chose to lure these pedofiles.  Why choose to bring this type of disgrace to this area?  I grew in the Bay Head/Mantoloking area and I know exactly the house that you have set your stage upon and have swam at that particular beach (at the end of East Avenue on Lyman!) I spent my years of innocence there, have wonderful memories and I feel that it is in utter distaste for you and your producers to pick this town for your stakeout.  Why not do this in the Hampton's and make an example of NYC's backyard???
I like the new format...these guys are not very smart though.
Each time I watch the show tears well up inside as I am so thankful for the work you all do that is working towards the safety of our children. Being a step mom who got custody of my two step children who were severely sexually abused I can't get enough of what you are doing THANK YOU!!
Chris, I have 4 little boys a little girl and a former step daughter who I still see and call her my little girl. What you are doing is awesome!!!! People in the us owe you for being a couragous man and catching those sick people. You are putting yourself at risk buy meeting face to face. So many things could go wrong even though the cops are right out side. Keep doing an excellant job and be careful. You are awesome and thank you and sorry, I forgot to mention perverted justice, you guys also are awesome, keep getting that scum!!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!

sincerely
chad quartermaine
I think you are doing a great job. These crazy people need to be stopped. Now the police offiers are trying to be special and I know they are on camera they really need to tone it down a bit. yelling is not the way to go. , WE all know that, but on the beach in JN , a million $ plus home over kill. I hope you get alot more ,but please the police do not need to be so theatrical'
Dear, Mr. Chris,
I wanted to say thank you in all that you have done, we need to get these predators off the streets...i wonder if all the people that oppose this method either had done this or if they have kids? If they have kids do they want this to happen to their child...I will be a mom soon, well in October..and i know i dont want my daughter around that...So again i say thank you for getting these predators off the streets and in jail where they should be!!!!!

This show is a great service to the public, along the lines of a Most Wanted show on another network. No matter the ratings, great or not, this show should continue. We see from those that watch the show and travel to the decoy house anyway that there is no potential consequence great enough to prevent them from attempting to have sex with a minor. As a father of a young son and a forthcoming father of a daughter, I have to believe that such exposure prevents at least some from starting their on-line chats for fear of being caught. There is little doubt that once they start, they cannot stop, but perhaps fear of being featured on this show can be the impetus for some to never begin.
My wife and I think that you people are doing a FANTASTIC job with the 'Predator' series. She finds it hard to watch sometimes, but as the father of a little girl I need to know what other precautions I need to take in her growing up.Thanks again. If you need a home in MI....
Chris,
Here is the problem. Let's say that the behavior exists to even a greater extent than we think. And I agree that it's the most disgusting of behaviors.
Other than to sensationalize it, what have you done to actually address the problem? Four hundred shows later this approach will not make a dent in the problem. It may have earned MSNBC and yourself millions of dollars.
Other than catching these people, and exposing them on national TV, what else exists in your process? Do you provide education to stop this kind of behavior?
Do you provide treatment for those who are caught?
If someone is caught drinking while driving, which is also a dangerous behavior and often affects the rights of others, along with the penalty they get some hope of treatment.  You are stepping into a problem, let’s say a severe one.
Other than to sensationalize it, is that part of your program that is constructive?
Chris, you understand the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The act of examining a event in some way alters the event, just by your observing it. When there is additional pain or shame caused by your process, who speaks to that?
Another question, I understand entrapment. I also understand that we have an organization called law enforcement to solve this problem. Is it legal for you to become and enforcement officer? You are making this your full time vocation. Do you have any training in law enforcement?
I understand, you partner with law enforcement. Is it legal for law enforcement to partner with you? If MSNBC decided to attempt to pick up every drunk in lower NYC, would or should the police department rush to arrest all the alcoholics that you have found? And where does your process face the light of day that every investigation needs to face?
And finally, by planning this unspeakable action, I have also given you the permission to broadcast my image to the nation? I know that you would never allow this to happen, but what if one of the producers made a mistake?
Chris, here is the first of two issues that really bothers me about this. You come across as enjoying this. Turn of the sound for five minutes and watch your facial expressions. Better yet, have a psychiatrist watch them. You are acting like a bully.
And you are enjoying it. Entitled or not, that is what you will find if you look at yourself objectively. We don’t let our law enforcement people behave this way. And I understand the temptation.
Investigative journalism, maybe. This doesn’t look like Woodward and Bernstien tracing the money to the President. As far as I can see no talent or journalism required here at all? If so, what is it? Your ability to interrogate? That doesn't put you in a very different category than those you arrest.
Chris, I am attempting not to get angry myself, but you have legitimized being a bully.  No matter how disgusting, you are picking on the sickest and the weakest among us. There was a movie made once about other abnormal behaviors. It was called On Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. As McMurphy was lobotomized, shouldn't we administer justice right on the spot to these people.
Honestly, there is something about this that isn't right about this. It's mean. And it may not be fair. And that matters. That matters a lot.
That isn't why television journalism was created, to play the same pathetic story, forty two times. And in that act, that is where for me, you have crossed the line. I did not ask you or MSNBC to police the internet for me. First you can't. And secondly, for my community, we haven't asked you to come here. That is my second problem. We didn’t train you or ask you to perform this function.
A rhetorical question. Are you willing to  give me $10,000's to investigate your past and create a special episode about your background we can broadcast on MSNBC. Guaranteed I will find something that you would not like on national television. So your premise is that by breaking the law, I have also given you the right to broadcast my actions on national television?
Chris, I do not want to start a movement that in any way appears sympathetic to those you trap. They are pathetic. And their behavior needs to be stopped. I am questioning the method.
This isn't the only illicit behavior on the internet. There are many others. Identity theft, scams of all varieties, illegal gambling. Maybe the internet should be regulated. Maybe this sentence that I am typing should be scanned by the government for words that indicate terrorism. Perhaps it already is.
You have picked a tough problem. One that will not yield to a very simple  approach.
Two things really mother me, and yes, I do draw analogies the Mr. McCarthy. One, you enjoy this way too much. It really borders on sadism. Two, no one asked you to perform this role. You volunteered.
No one asked Mr. McCarthy to purify us from communism. He volunteered. And mean spirited. Must have been, or a journalist would not have remarked, "Have you no decency?"
Please do not make this your life’s work. Opinions change. I can almost guarantee you that there will be no Pulitzer Prize for episode #1003.
I am trying to be fair, and I sincerely hope that you will respond. I am certain that I am not the first person to express these concerns.
But it do thing that this is about decency. Decency is a quality about you, not about the other party.
Chris, did you ever walk past the school yard going home and see some bully beating on someone smaller?
Did you ever want to come to help the weaker kid?
We have to go out of our way to be sure that we are fair, and that we are decent.
Saddam Hussein deserved to die. He didn’t deserve to die the way that he did.

please continue "to catch a predator"! these people need to be exposed- i don't feel sorry for any of them. what is so scary is that some really look like the guy next door.
I just saw the episode tonight and then i saw the piece about the lawsuit they are trying to file. As a father of three i really enjoy the shows, wether its ratings or whatever else the are complaining about, you are getting the sickos off the street and away from children.  I think the lawsuit is ridiculous, I think the show is awesome, keep up the great work, its good to see someone doing something.
i just finished watching t.c.a.p. and i can't help but feel a little disturbed by the tactics nbc employs to bring attention to potential sex offenders.  not only are you exploiting people's weaknesses, but airing them on a national broadcast...? doesn't this seem a tad cruel and destructive. i would hope that the skeletons in your closets are not exposed one day for the whole world to see...
I love this show I really feel like this is making parents more aware of what kids are facing everyday online... I was violated when i was younger and i have to two beautiful children and i talk to any girl or boy that i come in connect with to let them know about how nasty adults can be... Because we have to get the word out to everywhere and in schools Teaching teacher what to look for in kids that have been hurt....Also allowing children who have been hurt to be able to come forward so you can help without making the offender aware of it for the sake of child .... If i can ever be any can of help for this please let me know i will be more then happy to help out with a cause like this....

This show is a great way to show my two young daughters that pedophiles don't "look like bad people". Thanks for a great series and looking forward to the "To Catch an Identity Thief"
Chris I have to commend you on the great work you are doing, and I think parents need to join your effort and help create a no tolerance group for internet predators. I believe we have only tapped the surface in the predatory crimes on the net, and at least we have strict laws against adult predators, but there is a growing number of teens who solicit teens with explicit emails and we just dealt with a 14 year old trying to get a 12 year old to engage in sexual activity. Both of them had a myspace and the 12 year old was my daughters best friend. She let my daughter see emails he sent to her, and she had access to his account as well. My daughter let me read the entries. this girl had a private space. He is known to her and a friend, but his emails messages to her were erased routinely so her dad would not see. SO everything looked ok to her parents, but we witnessed grooming type behavior from his entries to her and if she would not have shared this with my daughter, I would not have known. I contacted the parent. It was a very difficult conversation. THis boy had similar conversations with 15 other girls in their private network. by the way, he lives in a great neighborhood, he is in middle school, and he is very popular. Plays sports, goodlooking. Most moms just love him.  He has been sexually active for over a year. He targets the girls who are insecure and younger than him. After reviewing the emails I saw from this young lady of his correspondences with other girls, it was apparent he would stop talking to them after he got what he wanted. He called the girls terrible, deragatory names. If we do not monitor our kids online activity better and more thorough, we are just creating a new generation of predatory behavior. I think all parents need to have their child's passwords and should be a watch dog on all activity daily. It took this young man sometimes only two to three dialogues with the girls before he started the sexual questions. These are girls who have parents who say they are safe! By the way the parents who knowingly let their underage girls get a MYSPACE should be held liable for child endangerment. SOrry for the long blog, but I feel parents need to wake up, and stop trying to be the cool parents. We need to monitor our children. DAILY.
Yeah Chris, how 'bout that guy with the camera? To me, he looked like he was on something. He just kept staring at Casey. It was eery. And he was so ardent in his responses about a "friend" who told him to go to the house. What a crock! Keep doing these investigations. Not only does it make great t.v., but it's highlighting a fundamental problem in our society.
Here I reiterate the post by Travis Johnson, Saint Augustine, FL on March 06, 2007 8:40 PM:

"To Catch a Predator" is absolutley sickening. You shameless hypocrites are exploiting sex crimes and the fear of them to get ratings and make big money all in the name of "protecting our children". You subject people who have not yet had the benefit of a fair trial to public humiliation, a form of punishment. The legitamate news media investigates stories and reports facts, it does not try and punish "criminals". You have stooped to the lowest level of pandering hack journalism. You have aligned yourselves with Perverted Justice, an aptly named (they are in the buisiness of perverting justice) vigilante group who have been denounced by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. You are the true predators; you prey on people's fears, and on their thirst for eighteous indignation and the spectacle of human suffering. You are disgusting.
I am always curious if you guys are going to end up with some poor 15 year old teenager coming to meet his 14 year old online girlfriend...
Surely by using a decoy what you are doing to these people is entrapment, and I am shocked that they are being arrested after their meeting. These quot&quot predators may have bad intentions, but entrapment is illegal and cannot hold up in court as far as I am aware. If it can in the USA, then that is more proof that England has a far more fair and just legal system.

I have pre-teen children and I am so glad to see you doing these shows.  I want my kids to know what  is  out there.  But I also want to know what I am up against.   Every time I watch I am floored and amazed.  Please don't stop watching out for all  the kids and families.  You are doing a great job.
I feel sorry for the personal trainer.  He seemed to actually get it.
Thank you for doing these programs. I can't watch them enough. As a victim of predator I find it cathartic to watch these perverts getting caught. Just wish I had told someone when it happened to me. I'd love to see that guy squirm too.
Chris,

Quite frankly I have mixed opinions about your show. First & foremost, I strongly believe that sexual solicitations to a minor should be firmly punished by law. Nevertheless, I think it's an obvious fact that there's lots of men & "women" out there with serious psychological sexual issues. There's no surprise in how sexually ill-minded people can be. Having said that, on the other hand I do not agree with
your approach to these individuals. Seems similar to those cop shows that dress a woman all slutty & high heels,  have her walk downtown acting all flirty & hooker-like, to attract desperate men whom perhaps would've not paid any mind to her, have they not been provoked in such ways. To then, have them exposed to the world on TV like the perverts that they are, but at the same time permanently destroying the individual's family, social, & work life; all mostly to make a high-ratings show. Your show has somewhat a similar set-up. You disguise yourselves as an online underage girl;  though not just any ordinary underage girl, more like a frisky sexually provoking little girl, and of course foolish pervs are going to bite the bait.

All I'm saying is, give these guys a chance, there are obviously very sexually ill people in these country. Come up with different methods to reprimand them
...give them psychological aid,  put them on monitored probation, give them jail time if required, but don't make these poor sick losers even more losery by burring their remote chances of ever having a life while ridiculing them on TV.

O. Esposito & A. Carrillo
I love this show... I do however have a question. You catch alot of men, but what about women?
Great show tonight guys. Keep up the good work. I have a teenage daughter who gets online and i monitor her closely. I appreciate all that you do with these stings. It is shocking to see how many people show up to these things. From doctors to pastors to everyday ordinary people. Not very bright. It's a real scary thing to see how many predators are out there. Thanks again!
I saw that you will be doing something on identy theaft and my heart stopped. I thought you were done with "To catch a predator." I believe what your doing is a great thing and coming from personal experience if you can stop someone from hurting another person not only with the experience but for the rest of there life believe me it is worth it. Please, keep it up, you guys are doing something to go home and be proud of. You got a few more off the streets. I'm a huge fan.
I just can't say enough good about Chris Hansen and Dateline "Predator" investigations.  Tonights show was very well done and it would be good if somehow it would deter these predators from doing this (although it appears that it makes no difference because they show up anyway).  Chris Hansen, you are my favorite journalist and I like all of your "To Catch A..." series (like the ones on identity thieves).  Your "heart" shows in your journalism.  You are my hero!!!
Chris,

I really think it's a good thing you're doing with the show. Keep catching those bad guys and I am really happy that someone is doing something out there to at least protect the children from the predators
