What evil lies within?

Even in his drab prison jumpsuit, chained and handcuffed, confined behind a thick glass barrier in the county jail, Sean Goff is an engaging man. Which shouldn't have surprised me, of course.  After all, the man was a minister, a youth pastor, before-- well, before what he did.

We met in the narrow confines of the visitor's center, separated by that barrier, not long after his conviction for a crime that was so horrific it had left more than a few people pondering the possibility for evil in one human soul.  Did I expect his face to betray something sinister or monstrous?

Instead, the man who shuffled in leg irons to take his position behind the glass practically radiated goodness.  He was wan, of course, pale from his months of confinement during the trial and the long period of preparation since his arrest.  But he was as well groomed, as he was kindly, friendly... engaging.

And he was obviously bright. We talked for, what, 90 minutes? About the Bible, about the theological underpinnings he believed he had discovered for polygamy (a personal error, he now believes), and about many of the endless arguments surrounding Christian dogma. I confess I enjoyed the exchange; Goff is an easy man to talk to.

Then we turned to the murder of his young wife, Joy... his wife-number-two. And that's when Sean Goff's talent for argument took a turn into territory that sounded, quite frankly, as bizarre as it was self-indulgent.  Round and round we went, as he took my questions about his dreadful behavior on a merry-go-round of circular logic. Each answer became a denial -- frequently in blatant disregard of known facts -- of the crime for which he was convicted. He built elaborate excuses for the limited "bad judgment" he was prepared to admit.

Sean Goff with Joy Risker -- wedding photo

In the end, he said, his religious beliefs dictated his controlling behavior toward his wives.  In the end, he said, it was Joy who was at fault for the horrible bloodbath that ended in her death, that it was she who refused to live by his rules, and she who attacked him.  In the end, he said, it was his commitment to the sanctity of family that led to his decision to dismember and hide Joy's body deep in the Arizona desert.  After all, he reasoned, had he turned himself in; his children would lose a father!

I must tell you, I was not particularly kind in my questions. I called him on his excuses, sometimes harshly. Occasionally, to challenge the sincerity of the religious certainty he pulled around him like a cloak, I was probably unfair.  And yet he never once lost his measured cool.

It became obvious, eventually, that Goff had no intention of confessing the crime he was convicted of inflicting on Joy. And so the interview drew to an end. And then, with his strange calm certainty, free of any apparent sense of guilt -- apparent at least to me -- he told me he has been forgiven for what he did, expects to meet Joy in heaven and has started a new ministry -- in prison.  He smiled as the guards re-attached his shackles.  His goodbye seemed heartfelt.

Sean Goff, some members of the jury had come to believe, is a psychopath, incapable of genuine feeling.

A felt a chill as I drove home. What was the true nature of the man, beneath that charming, deflecting, demeanor?  Does he have a conscience?  Perhaps he does. Perhaps he is merely determined to keep his torment private. And then again, maybe Sean Goff is harboring some evil inside, well hidden behind those engaging public displays of piety and goodwill.

Keith Morrison's report, "Body of Evidence" airs Sunday, July 15, 7 p.m. on Dateline NBC. Click here to see our Web crime files, and to watch more Web-exclusive videos and to weigh in on the verdict.

Here we go again another Scott Peterson. I hope you are never able to live with a clear conscious. Please don't use the word of God to commit a crime. Im very sure you will get your punishment in hell. Since you got  got part of it here in earth.
As I watched Joy's story tonight I could feel nothing but anger and remorse for her.  She was a beautiful young lady and mother of two who's life was cut short because she began to make sense of the world around her and Goff saw his grasp of power slowly slipping away.  She wanted better for herself and children and wanted to accomplish this by improving who she was as a person.  The power and use of religion is very scary and too often it is  used as a clutch to rationalze much of the "wrong and immoral" things people do.
I have a family member that I beleive has done this same type of crime & "Got Away With It". I have asked the same question many times as Mr. Morrison asked kevin, "Do you think your God will forgive you for this?" That is such a wonderful question, because I love to watch the person in my life squirm for a comfortable possition after hearing those 10 little words. I truely beleive that people need to be reminded to be kinder, be more loving toward one another, to be friendlier, to be honest & trustworthy. I think we have forgotten how to be gentle with each other. We need to be reminded to be compationate. Random acts of kindness. Please put sybliminal messages on your news casts to remind people of how good it feels to be nice. We have become a world of hate. It does take more effort to be mean than it does to be nice.
I am so glad to see true believers in Christ stand up for what followers of Christ really believe.  The comment about the Christian conservatives is quiet true, they are intolerant of anything and everything.  The Word tells us not to judge, unless you want to be judged. (I'm not good at quoting scripture).  The bottom line is, God is in control, however man has been given free will and will and can do some really horrific things.  The really unfortunate part is that they will do it in the name of God.

Goff, has done something legally and morally wrong and is being punished accordingly.  However, it should be noted that for those of us who do believe that Jesus was The Christ, believe that He was crucified so that we can be forgiven for our sins.  I know that for some this is difficult to believe...but if Goff truly repents for his sins (not trying to B.S. God (ok that might be sacralige)) then yes he can be forgiven.  In addition if he has accepted Christ as his personal saviour, there is even a seat in heaven for him.

For those of you who struggle with this concept, just remember that God is capable of things that go far beyond our ability to conceive.  He can do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we can imagine.

There is power in prayer, so lets keep praying that man will chose to change their evil ways.

God Bless.
From someone that has been abused by those that proclaim to be minister's I can't understand what Joy's parents or close friends were thinking. When someone takes the scriptures as tools to run their own agenda and especially as a means to control someone, some must wonder... why didn't anyone sense this mans blatant deception disguised behind religion?
jason from california, i wonder if you spotted his behavior towards manipulating young women from his church group, why did't others, like the people in charge of this church, most churches have elders or leaders that watch out for this kind of behavior, this church should be ashamed for letting it go on -not once but twice.
God wouldn't want us to hurt each other. Not for any reason. God made us all, and he loves us all. God doesn't want us destroying each other. Where does that get us? No where... or at least no where progressive. Love each other, respect each other, and treat everyone how you would want to be treated if you were them. I know if everyone believed that and followed those words wouldn't have people killing other people. Period. ...On judgement day that will be the only thing that really matters anyway.
I feel really bad about what happened to Joy. I feel like what Sean did was very evil. People who do things like 2nd degree murder and rape and harrasment have a longer punishment. He should have gotten a much worse punishment.
I am a Christian as well. And it was abundantly clear, from watching Goff, that he still is not repentant for what he has done. He is trying to pull the wool over God's eyes, not just mans. He needs to remember that God knows all, and he cannot fool God,even for a microsecond. Yes, he can be forgiven for what he has done, but he truly needs to be sorry. Not just words, but from the heart. All I can say,is that Goff has fooled only one person, and that is himself. He really believes his story. The fact that he could think that for one second anyone would buy his fake story line, is a sure sign that he has brainwashed himself.
God's people do not kill and dismember..the devil will continue to rule this earth and Sean Goff is just another human he has fooled. I will pray for the brother of Sean who took his children..I hope this madness doesn't run in the family!
What Church was Sean Goff a member of?
it really hurts to know that people think they can play god and then hide behind him. What a sick wacko
I believe this case has nothing to do with religion, but it is an unfortunate crime done by a man who may have lost his senses. Being a youth minister or preacher is absolutely different from what is inside once heart and the intentions of your heart and mind. I read the article watched the dateline and I was both shocked and disturbed to learn what this man had done. I am not judging, but I will hope that he gets what he deserves.
thank you Angela Redman, you are absolutely right if God will forgive only those that commit less heinous crime or easier to forgive sins not like murder most foul, then we are all doomed. It is for the very reason that Jesus came here on earth for us all. Frankly he did not came for the good people but for the hopeless case like myself. As for Sean Goff, unless that man repents there will be gnashing of teeth and plenty of heat waiting for him for eternity, yet I know even if it is hard for me to say this , Jesus died for him as well. I hope some of us who has expressed, anger , shock resentment towards this evil man will think about Joy's children and her family, pray for them for comfort and protection, also to open our eyes that not all people that says they are christians are really christians, know them for what they do not for what they say. Thanks to you Keith Morrison for a job well done in great reporting and having a good heart. Blessings to all.
It seems to me that if it was self defense, then he would have been very upset and distraught. To do the things he did post mortem, he had to be very calm, collect and calculating.
Men like Sean Goff are cowards. They overlook the part in the Bible were it says , Husbands love your wives as Christ Love the Church. However when you are possesed by a relgious demon the love of Christ is not in you therefore it becomes easy to justify your action towards you wife. I am convinced sometimes divorce is a good thing.
What wrong with divorce and share custody of the children? no killing involved.
He even LOOKS like Scott Peterson! God protect the young women in this world. I don't think such are safe anywhere now.
This man is sick and he is not forgiven and never will be as the Bible said thou shall not kill.If he loved his kids so much he would have walked away for the sake of love for them.He loves no one but his own ways.He will burn in hell as all do who lie ,cheat and kill.
I knew Joy, Sean and Sheila. I worked with them in the mid - late 90's. I found out about the murder a couple of years ago when someone from San Diego forwarded a news article to me. I want to emphasize that everything that's been said about what a wonderful, beautiful, caring, vibrant person Joy was is absolutely 100% true. She was a great friend and a loving mom. I know it must be hard to believe for the people watching this story, but Sean was a very charming, friendly and well-liked person. Just goes to show you how deceiving the devil can be. For the people who wonder why the people in Joy and Sheila's lives didn't try to get involved to help them...you are wrong. Many people tried to help them (after the truth came to light -- they tried to keep it a secret for more than a year). People offered to allow them and their children into their homes; they were offered financial support, moral support, spiritual support, etc. You have to remember that both ladies were teenagers in Sean's youth group (at different churches in different states) when they met him. From conversations I had with them, I believe they both became involved with him while they were still minors. He was able to manipluate them into his way of thinking. Sheils seemed like she went emotionally numb after a while.
He's a Cold Hearted Snake !!!!
I grew up with Sean (bear), we went to church together where we learned that God is love. He has a wonderful family. Please pray for both families involved. May God Bless them.
We will not know the outcome, Jesus Christ our saviour whom will be the Judge of this evil man. We will one day ALL be judged for our actions and if we followed the teachings of the Bible.
this guy is a disgustng liar and should suffer the same horrifying death he subjected upon this young girl. We should pray for the children!!
After watching the cold, calculating smirk on that man's face, how could anyone not see the evil that lurks within? There were so many people that loved Joy and tried to reason with her about the circumstances of her situation. Once she finally realized she needed to change her life, he took it from her. Tell me that man wasn't planning to kill her after seeing the tools he bought and I have a lovely bridge to sell you. He is sick to the fullest degree and he deserves to rot in his cell for the rest of his life. He has no idea how many people were devistated by the loss of Joy. And he thinks she will forgive him in heaven? He really is nuts!
I went to school with Sean and so did my sister, I just saw the show on Dateline and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I ate lunch with him and talked to him everyday in Jr. High and High School; played football with his brother. Sean was the nicest guy...all the girls said that about him. All I can say is..."Evil is about us and we never know where it lies or will swell up against us".
I worked with Sean and Joy at MCWE in San Diego before he was fired after confessing that he had two wives. Joy's cover story was that she was living with Sean and Sheila because her fiance (Jason) was in the military overseas and that they were going to get married when he came back. If I heard the story right, Sean went back to the old lie they were telling way back then. I remember him as being a very charasmatic charmer. Although, none of us were really suprised when we found out about their arrangement.
What town in Oklahoma is Sean from?
I've now watched the prison interviews. I pray Sean Goff burns in hell. There is no punishement on Earth to fit his crime.
Where was Joy's family? The story mentioned her mother gave her blessings for her to marry him, but I didn't hear the story mention anything else about her family at all. I found it odd they just focused on her two friends. Didn't her mom worry that she was missing?
guilty,guilty, guilty
Mr. Goff killed his wife, and he planned it far in advance. He uses God as an excuse, and that makes the rest of us who are religious look bad. I think that anyone who can plan to sin thinking that God will forgive him after, will have alot of explaining to do when he goes before Our Lord. I pray for Joy's children, and Mr. Goff's first wife~ They are the victims as much as Joy was.
My husband and I watched the program last night, what a very scary state the world is in right now. How can someone use 'God' as an excuse for any crime? Was he praying to God when he was sawing the teeth out of her jaw or cutting her fingers off, or when he drove 5 hours to the desert with her dismembered body in a cooler in the back seat?? Please tell me that. I so agree with the prosecuter, when he said that "he was the scariest defendant he had ever seen." All of the people involved were in the presence of the devil himself! It just amazes me that he only got 25 years to life...what is up with that? They needed to take him straight out of the court room and perform the same exact acts on him that he did on Joy and be done with him. Why does he get to live? The people that are suffering most are Joy's family and friends and mostly their children. And all of the people that knew him in the past....well, it just goes to show you that you really never know what someone is capable of, period. I agree with Lauria from Nashville, there is no punishment on Earth to fit his crime.
He is evil and should be punished. Unfortunately, a life sentence is insufficient. In this case it should have been the death penalty.
I am a domestic violence advocate. I happen to see the story last night and was HORRIFIED. Not only that, I am Christian and a minister of the gospel. I saddens me to see how people will abuse what they call Christianity for their benefit. When Joy's abuser had the audacity to say that he had to do what he did so his children could have a father. How dare he? Self defense is not what happened. If it was self defense, why didn't he call Law Enforcement. I know that Joy did not deserve what she received. I just hope and pray that other women that are in a relationship of OVERBEARING CONTROL such as Joy was will wake up and see the light....It can happen to you. PLEASE GET HELP. I pray that Joy's children will get the counselling they need and that they will heal to a point where they can live happy, fulfilled and productive lives. God knows this story is very hard for me to get out of my mind. Again, I just hope this horrific story can somehow safe another victims life so we don't have to have another story like this on the news.
I was friends with Joy, Sean, and Sheila (and their boys) for years. After breaking contact with them 4 yrs ago, I can only say I was horrified, shocked and disgusted to watch Dateline last night and learn of Joy's murder, it was the first I ever heard of her death. Being such close friends of theirs for years, and knowing first hand what a wonderful, kind, fun, good spirited woman & mother Joy was, I am sick over this, I can't wrap my mind around the fact that she's gone. Sean, a very intelligent and charming man, had to always be in control over every aspect of their lives and every decision was made by him and him alone. I know from conversations with Sheila (the first wife) that when they first got married years ago Sean did not tell her of his belief/desire of polygamy. Little by little over the years of their marriage, Sean convinced Sheila that God's plan for them was to be a polygamist family and bring a second wife into their lives. He often pointed out, or should I say twisted, passages in the Bible to prove to her and others that polygamy wasn't a sin. You have to remember, as Jason from San Diego pointed out, he was a youth minister, very convincing and charming, the type of man who was so intelligent and well versed in the Bible and so many subjects, he could get them to believe almost anything, and did. He met and married both women when they were very young and vulnerable to his manipulations. After conversations with Sean overtime, it was obvious he was using his take on religion and the woman's devotion to God, as a way to get everything he wanted...using his "belief" as the excuse for controling and ruling over the women because he said it was how "God intended husbands to be", to keep the door open to adding more wives so he could have sex with more than one woman, and so on. Sadly neither wife saw through his deception, until it was too late. Joy was a strong willed woman not afraid to voice her opinions to Sean. In the years I knew them I witnessed numerous fights between Sean and Joy. Each fight would ignite because Joy refused to always be subservient to Sean and always be told what to do and how to live her life, she would question him. To Sean this was an act of defiance by his wife and not acceptable, the women were not allowed to question his "authority". After watching the story last night, hearing the testimony, and just seeing his lying face, it's obvious to me that Joy was trying to leave, trying to get her and her 2 boys free of Sean and the twisted relationship. That after all these years she finally realized the truth behind his lies and found the strength to want out. But being the controling, manipulating, cold blooded man Sean Goff is, he would not allow this, and killed her. He's always twisted his religion/beliefs to suit his life and justify his actions. Now he's convinced himself that what happened had to be done, as if it was part of God's plan for him and God has forgiven him. It makes me sick to know he can sleep at night after the brutal way he killed Joy, and what this has done to her children. I hope he rots in jail the rest of his life.
We all are going to have different opinions on everything, no matter what it is. I truly believe in God, this person (Goff) played with the wrong fire. There is no way he or anyone else is going to make me believe God played a part in this Ocult Act. It getting old allowing people to get off on an insanity plea using God as there reason of being confused. Bipolar is being used as, well he/she couldn't help it. Postpartum depression is being used. Lets call it what it is No regards and respect for the life that God created. God is not a God of confusion, confusion is man made. Mr. Goff tried to use his title as Pastor and Minister for wordly gain. You can't play games with the Holy Ghost Fire. We were all taught as children " You play with Fire you get Burned".
This guy is a big creep, just like Scott Peterson. God may forgive him for being an idiot but he will have to answer up for the murder of this lovely young woman.
My heart relly goes out to Joy. Watching the show last night and listening to how Sean murdered Joy was very disturbing to me. Absolutely sickening and disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!! Sean is a very sick person to have done what he did to Joy. I've never met her but I believe the world lost a very special person the day Joy was killed. I feel so sorry for her boys.
The man is a textbook sociopath: engaging, likeable, manipulative, and without even a hint of a conscience.
I was raised as a stong christian all of my life. I had a strong christian life, I also worked very stong with the church. In a christian college, I became very educated about some of the practices of the church. It is very sad, but alot of it ultimately comes down to control. Male control within the christian church is very stong. When I was just 12 years old, I was molested on a camping trip by a youth pastor. When my mother confronted the pastor and the church, the church came very hard against ME. Remember, I was 12. Although the Pastor was ultimately relieved of his duties (for a few weeks) before we left, I was the vicitm of extreme anger and resentmentfrom both youth and adult church members. It saddens me that when we are talking about the abrupt end of a young mother's life, we get into a discussion of Christianity- yes or no. Listen, there are sick people out there. The problem with the church is the legalism that is displayed here that hides the true nature of these kinds of people. The people who are preying on 19 year old girls, counseling them without educational training, marring them and having kids with them while they are still married and killing them, mutilating their bodies, sending email to themselves and others as her and never telling where the body is. That is a monster. But what about those who were supporting him? The church who employed him. They are still out there, in and out of church, the evil of the ones in the church is that they are cleverly hidden under the fakeness that is required to "live a good life" those who have to supress what is "real", how they truly are or are most susceptible to this kind of ending. He was a murderer even before the murder took place, and he was teaching kids. If I see him in "Heaven", I know that I am probably not where I think I am.
It seemed like he even seemed satisfied that she was dead. He is still in control, he got the last word and not "God will forgive him" He wins right? And why are the kids with HIS family? Scary.
I Have been haunted by this story since it aired last nite. My sleep, as I'm sure many of your's was, very restless, waking up several times, that is what I was thinking about. I thought about it all day at work and during the ride home. I often asked the Father, how could that happen? How could a true child of God do that to such a precious girl, her family and friends? How could he twist the Word of God in such a way as to promote his own fleshly greed? Mr. Goff, my Father is good. He is love. The true love, the kind that sent His son to die for you. Did't Jesus tell us to decern other Christians because there will be wolves in sheeps clothing? Where were your pastor and elders? Forgiveness isn't just saying forgive me or I repent. It is a matter of your heart. And believe me, God knows! You can't manipulate or lie to Him. You must search your heart, don't sugar coat it. God will not sugar coat it, I assure you that. Watching you last nite on TV last nite was sickening, but the worst thing was looking into your eye's and seeing the young boy I used to see with the other childred. The same wide eyed look, the same hair. PARENTS, PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR YOUR CHILDREN EVERY DAY. GET IN THEIR BUSINESS IF NEED BE. GOD HAS A WONDERFUL PLAN FOR THEIR LIVES, PRAY FOR THEM...HOLD TIGHT TO ALL OF HIS PROMISES. Gods word is true. If it's not in there,it's not supposed to be!!!!!
I believe in self defense. However, all bets are off when you begin to dismember the body. There is no defense for covering up and/or mutilating a dead body. When you act in self defense the first thing you want to do is call the cops!
America needs to understand that polygamy is about sex, control and abuse. The inherent abuses that have been seen i.e. incest, child marriage, stepdaughter marriages, coerced marriages, mental and domestic abuse of women, and the devaluing and abuse of boys in order to keep an unnatural ratio of females to males they will continue to think that polygamy is just the Ozzie and Three Harriets shown on HBOs Big Love. it is not. Polygamists radicals have murders over 50 person in America since 1970 including a 7 year old girl, an 8 year old girl, a 18 month old girl and a 2 year old girl. In addition they have bombed a Mormon church and killed a law enforcement officer. This does not include the deaths caused polygamist and child rapist David Koresh. Or the deaths in the Oklahoma City bombing. Timothy McVeigh was involved with Elohim City, OK, a right wing polygamist group and bombed the building on the very day that an Aryan Race polygamist (most of the polygamists in America are white racists) was put to death in Arkansas for murder. Most polygamists are peaceful people. But wake up America this is not slap and tickle under the sheets. Radical polygamists are DEADLY serious. If you think this guy is chilling interview Dan Lafferty who killed an 18 month old baby saying that she would grow up to be a bitch just like her mother. What was the mother's crime - she didn't want her husband to marry and sleep with another woman.
I went to church with Sean (Bear) Goff when he was a little boy, about 5 and I was a teenager. I had not idea what had happened until I saw the show. However, I know his parent's and they are very, very good people. He was raised in Wagoner Oklahoma and has 3 brothers and a sister. His parents must be heart broken. I can't understand how Sean could get to far off base because he was raised by outstanding parents. I would love to be able to send his parents a card.
For the poster who asked, her mother died 4 years ago
What a monster!
What bothered me the most was that he claimed to accept Jesus Christ into his heart. If he did truly do this then he will be in heaven despite his evil acts. It's hard to comprehend, but Jesus may the way to heaven clear when He shed his blood for us. They say that you will be suprised who you do see in heaven and also suprised by who you don't. Good works will not get you there; only accepting Jesus into your heart.
I believe it is obvious and apparent that this individual is suffering from a mental illness. In any case, everyone in life justifies their own doings in any fashion that suits them. Just as the opinions of all us are justified by our own beliefs. However, when the law is broken the crime must be dealt with. And when a person is suffering with mental illness this too should be dealt with. Everyone alive should tell everyone they care about that they are special and loved and we ALL need to realize that our time on earth could be over at any moment.
