What evil lies within?

Even in his drab prison jumpsuit, chained and handcuffed, confined behind a thick glass barrier in the county jail, Sean Goff is an engaging man. Which shouldn't have surprised me, of course.  After all, the man was a minister, a youth pastor, before-- well, before what he did.

We met in the narrow confines of the visitor's center, separated by that barrier, not long after his conviction for a crime that was so horrific it had left more than a few people pondering the possibility for evil in one human soul.  Did I expect his face to betray something sinister or monstrous?

Instead, the man who shuffled in leg irons to take his position behind the glass practically radiated goodness.  He was wan, of course, pale from his months of confinement during the trial and the long period of preparation since his arrest.  But he was as well groomed, as he was kindly, friendly... engaging.

And he was obviously bright. We talked for, what, 90 minutes? About the Bible, about the theological underpinnings he believed he had discovered for polygamy (a personal error, he now believes), and about many of the endless arguments surrounding Christian dogma. I confess I enjoyed the exchange; Goff is an easy man to talk to.

Then we turned to the murder of his young wife, Joy... his wife-number-two. And that's when Sean Goff's talent for argument took a turn into territory that sounded, quite frankly, as bizarre as it was self-indulgent.  Round and round we went, as he took my questions about his dreadful behavior on a merry-go-round of circular logic. Each answer became a denial -- frequently in blatant disregard of known facts -- of the crime for which he was convicted. He built elaborate excuses for the limited "bad judgment" he was prepared to admit.

Sean Goff with Joy Risker -- wedding photo

In the end, he said, his religious beliefs dictated his controlling behavior toward his wives.  In the end, he said, it was Joy who was at fault for the horrible bloodbath that ended in her death, that it was she who refused to live by his rules, and she who attacked him.  In the end, he said, it was his commitment to the sanctity of family that led to his decision to dismember and hide Joy's body deep in the Arizona desert.  After all, he reasoned, had he turned himself in; his children would lose a father!

I must tell you, I was not particularly kind in my questions. I called him on his excuses, sometimes harshly. Occasionally, to challenge the sincerity of the religious certainty he pulled around him like a cloak, I was probably unfair.  And yet he never once lost his measured cool.

It became obvious, eventually, that Goff had no intention of confessing the crime he was convicted of inflicting on Joy. And so the interview drew to an end. And then, with his strange calm certainty, free of any apparent sense of guilt -- apparent at least to me -- he told me he has been forgiven for what he did, expects to meet Joy in heaven and has started a new ministry -- in prison.  He smiled as the guards re-attached his shackles.  His goodbye seemed heartfelt.

Sean Goff, some members of the jury had come to believe, is a psychopath, incapable of genuine feeling.

A felt a chill as I drove home. What was the true nature of the man, beneath that charming, deflecting, demeanor?  Does he have a conscience?  Perhaps he does. Perhaps he is merely determined to keep his torment private. And then again, maybe Sean Goff is harboring some evil inside, well hidden behind those engaging public displays of piety and goodwill.

Keith Morrison's report, "Body of Evidence" airs Sunday, July 15, 7 p.m. on Dateline NBC. Click here to see our Web crime files, and to watch more Web-exclusive videos and to weigh in on the verdict.

I knew Joy from the time we were in high school and she never deserved to die like she did.  He is an evil man who took Joy's life as if she had no worth.  her childern will now grow up without her because he couldn't live without being in control of her life.
My ex and I were literally at each other's throats during our split up,(he is bipolar). But thank God we both came to the point where we had to decide if we loved our children MORE than we hated each other. Luckily for everyone involved the answer for us both was, yes. Our children were defintely more important than our desire to destroy each other. After faking politeness for so many years we are now better friends than we ever were during our marriage. How I wish more people could come to this conclusion. In our case no one got murdered, no one went to prison, and our kids stayed out of foster care and have both their parents.A happy ending to a horrible marriage IS possible.
Sin is sin and as is so often the case in corporate Christianity, where misguided ministers rationalize thier deeds to the detriment of all.
The religious types are the very worst! They hide their sins under cloak of the bible and interpret it to their own advantage. He isn,t kidding anyone and he won,t fool the jury.
I am a Christian and this is just chilling. What is really scary are all the people, ministers, priests, church leaders, "religious" people that justify their deeds through the scripture. It paints all of us in a bad light. But he could have been a policeman, or a teacher or any other profession that we look up to.
There will always be evil among us, and we just have to realize that the man was evil and not his "calling" or profession.
I just happen to read the small dialogue (I will be watching this tonight) regarding Joy Risker's murder.  Don't people who decide to take someone life realize that they are just not hurting the one they murdered but there is a whole line of people that they are affecting.  God does forgive - and I hope it does with Sean Goff but at some point, we have to stop using the fact that we can do evil deeds and God will forgive us.
Well religious people justify horrible actions through the scriptures all the time, don't they? Actions like denying Gays the right to marry, stripping women of their right to choose, and preaching hatred against other faiths. Since scripture is the justification for only allowing straight people to marry, perhaps murdering someone who won't obey their husband should be legal as well!
WOW, Rebecca you are one angry woman.  I guess hate really is the ultimate family value!! That is surely all I can see from you, and I am very sorry for that.  What this man did had nothing to do with Christ.

Michele, intolerance seems to be the only value of the conservative Christian movement.  Where's the love?  Didn't Christ eat with prostitutes, and tax collectors?
Good God, ya'll!  The man is sick, and that's all.  He uses religion in the same way many people do--Rebecca is right about that.  Some men use religion, and have throughout the history of religion, to justify murder and discrimination--no doubt about it. Fortunately, not all who believe in religion are sick. This one is. He would have justified his actions without religion, too.
Gender discrimination is just a great a sin as any other and the people that call themselves Christians and practice "gender discrimination" are sinning. I am a Christian and have read the New Testament. I did not read any scripture where Jesus discriminated against women. Submitting to another person should be because we love the other person and not because we are forced. May God bless all who read this message.
i knew Sean and Joy both.  Joy was a wonderful young woman, who was vibrant and full of life.  Sean was an intelligent and charismatic leader.  I worked very closely with them both for almost 2 years.  I was also very close personal friends of both of them, especially Joy.  What Sean did borders on the unforgivable, using his twisted interpretation of scripture as justification for his sexual appetite.  Sean was, and may still be, a predator.  Joy was a teenager (19) in the youth group that Sean pastored when they first met, and he used his spiritual influence to deceive her.  I had many conversations with her as to how confused she was and how torn she was about her relationship with him (they were secretly polygamist, it was not open or forthright and their relationship was masked as friendship/brotherly .)  Sean used whatever manipulations available to get what he wanted.  Not only was Joy a victim, but also Sean's first wife has suffered through this (who had also been a member of his youth group in Oklahoma).  The pattern was established long before Joy.  Ultimately, Sean was an arrogant man who would not allow himself any accountability, and left to his own device became increasingly controlling and violent.  I hope justice is served, and Joy's life, and children find resolution and closure.
To some it seems a bit presumptuious to assume we humans can devine the will of God.  Man, we can't even devine the reasons for our actions.  The day is coming soon when the masses will begin to see "Religion" for what is really is, a convenient power structure.  Some of us long for the day when there is no more religion.  Then maybe we can begin to treat each other, man and woman, with proper dignity and respect.
I never cease to be amazed why ministers who preach the Gospel of Christ and take their messages from the Bible seems to have missed or chose to overlook the scriptures that doesn't appeal to them in order to do what they want to do.  In Ephesians 5:22-25 it tells wives to submit to your own husband as to the Lord..for the husband is head of the wife as Christ is head of the church and he is the savior of the body..Therefore just as the Church is subject to Christ So let the Wives be to their own husbands in everything...HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES JUST AS CHRIST ALSO LOVED THE CHURCH AND GAVE HIMSELF FOR HER.
Verse 28 says Husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. No one ever hated his own flesh but nourishes and cherishes it just as the Lord does his Church.
I have quoted these scriptures to show what is expected of the wife BUT so many wives cannot be in subjection to their HUSBANDS due to the abuse put on them by their husbands.  A Husband and Wife become one flesh when they are married.  This man would not cut up himself as he did his wife.  So just how could he ever justify by the scriptures doing what he did not to mention the Adultry he was involved in with another woman. That is another issue he will have to stand before God and be accountable for. lst Timothy 3:2 says to be the HUSBAND of ONE Wife.
God will judge this man so the bottom line he may try to fool everyone but himself but it is himself he can't fool.

An eye for an eye
Love is love, evil is evil.  It does not matter where you category a person.  The heart is what God our Lord looks at.
A woman is dead, brutalized and dumpde in the desert. Bible or not, someone did this and has to stand accountable for it. I don't any sane person on this planet that wouldn't see that because of something the Bible supposedly says....seems to me like the Bible causes more problems than it solves......this man is truly sick and will absolutely burn in hell with the Devil himself!! Good Riddance to you Sean Goff!!
THERE IS A DEVIL,THERE IS NO DOUBT. BUT IS HE TRYING TO GET IN US OR TRYING TO GET OUT...
I am quite sad to see how many people view Christ
and how they use His words in the bible to manipulate
other people.  One only has to see with their own eyes
to tell which are his true followers and which are not.  "you can usually tell from the fruits they bear
if they are true followers of Christ" although even those who love and follow Christ are not free from
sin, however most of us were released from these horrible acts since we are made new by His love and
sacrifice. And in these renewed life that we are able to avoid and fight these evil temptations that all
men face everyday.  Yes there are those that will fail, even Peter one of Christ's chosen apostle had
betrayed Him, but by the power of His Holy Spirit
and the fellowship of many brothers and sisters that
are faithful to him these deeds is impossible for a
true believer to commit.  We can lie all we want, we
can try to convince many and perhaps you might even
be succesful in the web of lies one can sow, but in the end the One who knows everything will be the final judge.

I doubt very much this evil person was a true believer.  Based on his evil actions and the way he
had manipulated many people.  Remember that the Lord
Jesus himself had warned us that they will come a time
that many will call Him Lord and He will not recognize
them since they were not HIs followers.
It is not the fault of relgion that those disgraceful men or women of the cloth perpetrate crimes of all sorts against those weaker then themselves.  It is the fault of mankind that these things happen.  Religion or spirituality is a wonderful thing.  It is only when mankind bastardizes the teaching of the holy books to their perverted perspectives that these kinds of degenerate behaviors occur.
So, it is folly to blame religion for the faults of mankind.  For it is the belief in a higher power and in oneself not a belief in the innate goodness of  mankind that most often keeps the human race from the edge of dispair.
Religion can send people to hell, but SALVATION won't!

Mr. Gibson, I do beleive that you are strong in the WORD!
My observation based on what I have read so far, we
in general seem to mix up "RELIGEON" with GOD, when we
say we are religeous, are we saying then that we believe in a God, or are we Christians , Budhists,
Muslims, Catholics , protestants, Jehovahs witness,
Mormons and the lists goes on and on....

My understanding of Religeon now that I became a
believer of Jesus Christ as the one and only Savior,
who Died and Resurected on the cross so that I will
have eternal life if I believe on Him is this...

Religeon kills, divides, hates, despises the truth,
injures, hurt little children, makes family fight
among one another, insults, descriminates, and if
we continue to rely on "RELIGEON"  to reach out to
GOD, we will continue to fail and will never find
why we exist on the earth at all, I am sorry for
how this world could not see that, how much technology
we have that we can send spaceship to the far corners
of the universe, yet not comprehend the importance of
salvation.

True salvation will have love, patience, forgiveness,
perseverance, compassion , joy, peace the likes that
once a person experience this will never go back.
I think that religion is over rated these days.
Why don't we just try to be good people, don't purposely harm others. God is in within us all.
it's a shame that we live in the days where we have to suspect our priests, teachers, physicians. Unfortunately there is a lot if evil in the world, in a world where there is innocent among us.
We have to be careful and not judge by profession.
God is your well doing.
We ALL must remember that Earth remains Satan's playground -- anything Satan can do he absolutely will so that confusion/horror reigns supreme if given the opportunity. Therefore, anything to do with our understanding of God is muddied as much as possible by Satan if anyone accepts his offer. We ALL want perfection in our walk in life but we have not been delivered yet. And the YET is for our asking but we must walk the walk daily.
Sean is a psychopath with no feelings for what he did.  He is calm because he has no reason or rhyme for what he did.  He is a minister alright, only thing, the devil was hiding under the clothes he wore.  What looks good on the outside can be as evil as they come.  He deserves whatever he get's.  Joy did not deserve to die by his hands.  God should have been the one to take her when he felt ready.
I was attacking Sean and no one else.
Religion is man running the affairs of God for fun and profit, whereas faith is an individual relationship with our Maker. Two different animals that live in different forests. May God have mercy on Mr. Goff,s soul despite his heinous acts.
If codis didn't have a dna match..they could have used http://www.dnaprint.com/ for a better idea of what she looked like including eye color.
There was a third wife as well, for a time.  One day Sean took her downstairs, put her in a taxi, and said, in effect, "You're outa here.  Bye!"  Perhaps she's the lucky one.
GUILTY. ANOTHER SCOTT PETERSON.
IT IS ESTIMATED THERE ARE OVER A MILLION PHYCOPATHS OUTSIDE PRISON WALLS OF THIS COUNTRY. ALL OF THEM HAVE NOT COMMITTED VIOLENT ACT YET.
UNSPEAKABLE TO CONSIDER THE HORRIBLE POSSIBILITIES OF THIS.
I hope he rots.  What an evil man.  Save his family by killing his 2nd wife and having the 1st one clean up his mess.  Sicko
this is yet another disgusting man that used religion gto lure women for his own benefit. he is sick and he is where he belongs with any luck someone in jail will take care of him

seek and save his fellow imates my rear
Even crocodiles have tears.
What a liar.  Help other prisoners?  God helps those who help themselves.
Did Sean Goff go to high school in Madisonville, Kentucky????
There is no way this sick individual can hide behind Jesus' or God's laws in what his heinous crime.  If he didn't want to be with the young lady, he should have walked out the door.  As I look at this story now while he's in jail, he DOESN'T look like he wants forgiveness, he has a smirk on his face as if the entire ordeal was funny.  Now the 2 innocent children has neither a mother or father.  He will burn in Hell for what he has done.  He's a sick individual.
It's a safer world with him being behind bars.
I hope he never gets out, that is really wrong.
No, he went to school in Oklahome.
He is a bad, bad, bad person
The same vile ignorant logic "he will be judged again by god" is as vile as "I will be forgiven". I know better. The thought of there being anything after death is as archaic and ignorant. Please for the sake of mankind be a cognitive human, moral and ethical for the sake of goodness towards other living beings. Dont be afraid for there is only judgement by mankind and he in not timeless and very prone to forgetting thus forgiving through ignorance.
Guilty... How could any "man of God" done this. He did not show much remorse and futhermore he displays low moral standards. He mutilated her so that her family would never be able to properly say goodbye to her.. Anyone who choses to erase another person cannot possibly believe that are called to spread the Gospel.
what happened to the children of Joy?
I can't believe someone who stabs another person 12 times would try to state it is self-defense; much less dismember their body.  And it doesn't make sense to me that God would forgive Sean, as "thou shall not kill" is one of the ten commandments set by God.
Keith Morrison has quite a voice and does a fantastic job!  His voice reminds me of Boris Karloff....all night I kept hearing the Grinch tell this heinos sad story.
There is no way you can cut out teeth and cut off fingers if you just didnt want to get caught.... And as far as helping other inmates, he needs some help.
Anyone who would like to know what the Bible says about all this should go read Clara M's message from Hudson, Florida.
The Bible says man should love his wife as he loves the church....
That is enough to explain how "sincere" this man was about his religion... He wasn't...and therefore not a true Christian. That was the first lie he told.
My sympathy to Joy's family and friends.
This viewing format is usually good tv, but please, please stop speaking at your audience like a Dr. Seuss narrator, you Keith Morrisons of the world. Catch the Predator carries an imporant message also, but your host there has become equally annoying.
Anyone can say what they want! But, he is a killerofthe worst kindthey hide behind the church.  Just give me one hour with that A-- Hole and I can make him realy see what he did. And maybe save us Tax Payers some money. He is not sick he is just a cold blooded killer that should neverget out of jail., and by the way why isn't he in a cold blooded Prison instead of a county jail like he is in a motel.
I have never seen such a sad attempt at someone trying to make themselves cry. This man ( I would like to call him worse ) is a sorry excuse of a human. How could he think that anyone would beleive he cut her finger tips off and saw her teeth out to make sure she could not be identified, yet he said he did it in self defense. What a very very sad man. For him to say that Joy will forgive him when he gets to heaven made my stomach turn.
