Preacher's wife on trial

Posted: Friday, July 06, 2007 2:04 PM by Dateline Editor

It's a story that made headlines across the country.

A small-town preacher was killed early one morning in his own parsonage as he slept.

This case would open a pandora's box of secrets -- because the pious and charismatic preacher, it seemed, was a different man when he stepped away from the pulpit.

Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison previews the case.

"The Preacher's Wife" airs Dateline NBC on Monday at 10 p.m.

Recently, I watched the NBC report about this case. I was particularly horrified by all the people, including jury members and callers from the community, who believed that the defendant set out to kill her husband. I am relieved by the judge's wise decision in sentencing. Perhaps some of those mean-hearted callers should experience what this woman suffered through behind closed doors and then review their position.
I have a lot of problems with the whole case.  She might be telling the truth about everything, but I guess we won't really know because he's not here to say one way or the other.  What else is she going to say.

It seems to me she got away with everything pretty good anyway
I believe that Mary Winkler got away with murder. I am wondering if Keith Morrison will check into whether they are going to prosecute her for the bank fraud. I pray she never gets her children back.
They need to be protected at all costs and she has proven that she cannot handle the pressure. If doing without her children is the only real payment she is going to have to make for killing Matthew then
so be it.
Much of the defense rang true for me in as far as the way an abuser often has such charisma that they come across as saints. They often wear two faces.. one to the world and one at home, however, anyone who has read about abuse much less lived it knows these facts and can adopt them to their situation and personal benefit. Murder is never an option. I was in an abusive marriage and I never once thought about killing my husband..I only thought about getting away. I also believe that had this been a man accused of killing his wife he would have received the maximum sentence.
