Dueling movie versions of a crime

It's an uncommonly attractive mobile home park - the one across the highway from the Florence, South Carolina, airport.  The whole place is shaded by tall evergreens, the atmosphere beneath is more akin to a state park campground than low income rental housing.

We caused quite a stir when we came with our cameras and lights to interview public officials about an event almost nobody in the whole park had ever heard of, certainly not the swarms of little girls who gathered in the street to practice their dance moves.  Of course, they weren’t born then.  Weren’t even imagined.

The event, as our story describes, happened back in 1994: Jennifer Morgan, 23 years old, funny, pretty, full of life, was murdered in trailer number 9.  Whoever killed her tried to hide the crime by torching the place, having sloshed gasoline around the bed where she lay smothered (or strangled, or hit on the head..nobody knows for sure).

It was a terrible thing, an obscene waste of a wonderful young life.

But it was the effect of Jennifer’s death -- the investigation of it -- which is still tearing through private and public lives in the Carolinas and now as far away as Detroit, Michigan.

Watch the show and you’ll see that the question of what happened to Jennifer Morgan has become enmeshed in suspicion, betrayal, professional jealousy, and a remarkable feature of 21st century life: the public airing of once private behaviors.  In this case, they even made their own movies! Dueling versions of history.

So who was right about what happened? Was it the county sheriff, Kenny Boone, still working after all these years toward a solution?  Was it Tom Morgan, the devoted brother, who labored for more than a decade to finger the perpetrator?  Or was it Pat Moag, the Michigan cop, who put his reputation on the line with an allegation so shocking you’ll have to see it to believe?

I must also confess to a real regret.  A central figure in the story of Jennifer Morgan’s death was a young man who once offered her (far too frequently, by most accounts) his undying love.  That young man became a suspect, and the subject of one of the movies.  In fact, he still has not been removed from the list of suspects.  I very much wanted to talk to him, to ask for his view of the whole business (surely as useful and legitimate as anyone else’s opinion), but he has, again and again, declined.

With that piece unhappily missing, we’ve laid out the puzzle in as much detail as time has allowed.  Perhaps Sheriff Kenny Boone will finally get his man.  Or maybe you will figure it out...

Hi Keith: My husband & I both are career Police Detective and CSI Officers ith more than a combine total of 60 years experience.Having done arson investigations; the problems are that alot of evidence goes up with the flames. Also, within the past 14 years science has done leaps and bounds with technologies that were not available at the time of the incident. As far as Mr Moag; we have never heard of Livonia Michigan and if Mr Moag is any example of the training, talent, professionalism on that Police Department they are in sad shape. I noticed that he didn't have any experts that spoke defending his wild-ass-conclusions. If his education qualifications are only a 1 week Reid Interrogation School and a 2-day up-date work shop that is pretty lame. I have a BA in psych/criminology & MA Admin of Justice and have atttended many continuation education classes, including the same training schools he claimed that gave him his expertise. I know in Southern California we would never get a filing from the DA on the witch hunt evidence that he laid out. Hopefully his acting is better than his law enforcement knowledge; what a joke. He would do better getting a stand in job for Michael Chiklis. Also, was it necessary to show shots of him working out in his wife beater t-shirt (he needs to beef up his arms more). I suggest he leave the Morgan family & the law enforcement of Florence alone and start looking into "his crystal ball" and tell us what happened to Jimmy Hoffa or DB Cooper. I commend you on calling him on his assumptions.. My regards to the Morgans. May they realize that Mr. Moag doesn't represent the rest of the law enforcement community.
Corey Cicci, Actor from Among Brothers Hello, my name is Corey Cicci, and I'm one of the lead actors in the film Among Brothers. I feel compelled to write a few comments, since I know Tom Morgan and worked with him on this film, and because I have met Patrick Moug and have seen his documentary, Bold as a Lion, in its entirety. A quick note...I feel as if I have kept an open mind throughout this entire experience, from first reading Tom's script in 2004, to speaking with Tom about the facts and his opinions on the case, shooting the film Among Brothers, speaking with the Morgan family, meeting Pat Moug, watching Bold as a Lion, and finally, watching the Dateline feature. I have never been quick to judge anyone, and I have been cautious about forming and sharing my own opinions on this bizarre case. Having said that, here is the big problem I have: the root of Mr. Moug's theories and accusations comes from Tom Morgan's script, and this script is a work of art. Although it is based on actual events, it is still a work of fiction. You can decide for yourself as to whether these "clues" are some cause for concern or are completely ludicrous. But the bottom line is that Pat Moug pulled alleged facts and evidence from a screenplay. (Furthermore, the video interviews in Bold as a Lion between Tom Morgan and Pat Moug were shot as short promotional videos in order to pitch Brothers to investors. They are not recorded depositions, and they are not testimony. Like Tom's movie, they are artistic in nature and should never be mistaken for fact.) So why did Tom Morgan write himself at the scene of the crime in his movie? I've spoken with him about this, I've thought about it on my own, and I'll tell you why -- because it is a metaphor for how Tom feels. I believe he feels as if he should've been there to protect his sister, as if he barely missed the opportunity to prevent this outrageous crime and save his sister's life. Pat Moug thinks that Tom's writing of himself at the murder scene (and writing much of the movie from the killer's point of view) is some kind of mistake or "slip up" on Tom's part, revealing that he was actually involved in the crime. To me, it has the opposite effect. It shows that Tom can write about such a heartbreaking event with no barriers. This is his way of finding closure -- by trying to understand the actions of the killer(s), by trying to think about what the killer thought about that terrible day. Instead of simply thinking of the killer as some violent psychopath, he thinks of this person as a human being and tries his best to understand them. Tom Morgan loved his sister, and writing about her death is how Tom has been able to move on. If my sister were murdered, I would hope that I could be as strong as Tom Morgan and capable of thinking about her death with as much insight and lucidity. I'm proud to be a part of the film Among Brothers, and I'm proud to know Tom and the Morgan family. Whether or not this crime is ever solved, Jennifer Morgan's life will continue to be remembered and celebrated, as it should be.
Keith, I was mesmerized by the content of the Jennifer Morgan Murder as presented by MSNBC. It was a sad episode unlike thousands more like it throughout the country. Livonia detective Pat Moag took a giant leap of faith in making such an assessment against Jennifer's brother Tom because including himself in a screen play or of reportedly failing a lie detector test or responding the person responsible for the murder should be prosecuted and sentenced accordingly by the court or looking downward when asked if he killed his sister. All of these things in and of themselves does not make one "a murderer". I think the country sheriff has nailed his best suspect who is currently incarcerated in a federal penitentiary on an unrelated crime. Detective Moag should spend more time on the beat and less time making movies. It might serve him better as a Detective. He reminds me of the Palm Beach Detective who botched another murder and upon a thorough investigation it was learned the Palm Beach Detective was nothing more than a "hair dresser"!
For my sanity . . . PLEASE let me know what happened at the end. After watching for 1 hour & 45 minutes, I fell asleep! The last thing that I remember was SLED investigating Tom after failing a polygraph. Then I recall the detective making a film and showing it to a group of friends at a theater. Thank You
The allegations and aspirations of the dangerously intrepid among us should always be held suspect. I couldn't think of a wider conflict of interest than the agents among us who aspire to influence the police, the press, and the slippery domain of infotainment that barely seems to separate them.
I agree with Natalie in KY...the "movie director" seemed awfully interested in the story when he thought he could make money producing it. Then, when he's replaced by someone else, his project becomes one of framing Tom. I'd like to hear Paul Harvey's "rest of the story" on this one!
Very even handed reporting, albeit a surreal story that you would expect from a paperback novel rather than real life. I hope there is a follow up to this story sometime in the future. I'm very interested in how this all will unfold.
What confuses me about Tom is: Failing the lie detector test. How did his watch get into her hand if he wasn't there? And what was she doing at home early - maybe to meet him in response to his request for help or something. His nonchalant attitude. His knowledge of the crime scene. I'm not saying it was murder - maybe an accident that he thought had to be covered up to avoid self incrimination. These questions would need to be answered for me if I was the investigator.
Was this story really worthy of 2 hours reporting time? Because I felt slighted. People playing detective without having all the facts and at the end absolutely no new evidence and taxpayer's time and monies wasted. Supposed Michigan do-gooder could have just submitted evidence to Sheriff Boone for consideration. I think Dateline can do better.
After watching the whole program I was appauled at Patrick Moag. He has no evidence against Tom but wasn't reluctant in accusing him and bringing the Morgan family down with him. Maybe he should check his ethics before deciding on his own who is guilty. I was disgusted by him.
I was room mates with Jennifer at Francis Marion. She is a beautiful person that just made you happy when you were with her. Jennifer and I would go to her home in Mrytle Beach some weekends. She loved her mom. This story did my heart good to see her family and past pictures. I can not believe that anyone would consider that any member of her family would be involved! Her family was very close and very supportive. My prayers go out to her family! I still think about Jennifer as I go through my daily life. How I wish I could share with her all of my blessings. Jennifer touched many lives while she was here. She made many lives better! I wish my boys could play with her and listen to all of our stories!
I agree with the comments written by David Beauchamp (Massachusetts). I, too, knew this family. While I was in college, I dated Tom Morgan. There is absolutely NO WAY that Tom (nor his family) would commit this crime. Tom comes from a very close tight-knit, loving family. It sickened me to see Pat Moag's version. I hope that Dateline's story stirs up information leading to the arrest of Jenny's killer and eventually gives the Morgan family some closure. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!
I have seen Tom Morgan's movie and Pat Moug's documentary and each is specific regarding a theory of who killed Jennifer. Keith Morrison, through his editing of Friday night's Dateline, also put HIS spin on the "who done it". Unfortunately, Keith Morrison is guilty of doing what he accuses Pat Moug of doing. He seemed to be damning Pat and protecting Tom, while not doing much to follow up on a lot of holes investigation headed by Kenney Boone. We did not get enough of this part of the story. I do not think Keith Morrison did Jennfer "justice" either; a bit hypocritical. Ironically, Tom Morgan's movie is just as accusitory as Pat's documentary. Yet, Keith Morrison's Dateline story went to great lengths to show one side, protecting Tom and damning Pat. If you have not seen Tom's movie AND Pat's documentary then Keith Morrison's report would make you think exactly what HE wanted you to think. It is easy to persuade people when they do not accurately get both sides of the story. Keith Morrison's story did not help answer to many questions to who killed Jennifer. Shouldn't that anger the Morgan family?
I feel Sorry for Jennifer because she DID NOT deserve to die like that! Her age got to me because I was at the same age when she got murder, she was a month older then me and I DO NOT LIKE to out live a person like that. The stupid moag is a retard! I believe that Tom is innocent. Chris Woodson might be innocent, But the guy across the street IS NOT innocent and might be the one who killed jennifer in the first place.
most of you people are missing the overall LARGE picture. ALL THESE COPS ARE DOING THIS!! They attend a class and think they deserve a diploma. that’s why its a certificate and NOT a diploma. who knows if the guy teaching the class didn’t have ONLY a certificate, but should have a degree in said field to say the least. cops are out of control and believe they are all at the top of their game. few are, and usually they're in control of the shop, not a worker bee. don’t get me started on these DA's either. these guys have some who couldn’t be more guilty and they want more evidence to prosecute. and then you have others that just go after the innocent based on other liars. like those lacrosse players who were supposed to of raped that stripper or dancer broad? what’s up with that DA? then to suggest that the guy nailed his own sister? i mean, i hope they are so suing that wanna be law enforcement excuse of an earthling. and finally what the hell is dateline doing anymore? tabloid TV, no different than any other show from maury to springer to okra, just no audience participation. But seriously pat, take up sky diving or something man.
Great story, it certainly had my attention throughout the entire show. I agree 100% with the detective from S.C., when he stated Pat was simply a young cop trying like hell to make a name for himself. The sad part about that is, Pat's bizarre investigation ( how can a legitimate detective investigate without checking out the alibis? ) came at the expense of a murdered woman and a very distraught family. Incest?, a family covering up the crime?, what on earth is going on inside Pat's head? Thank God he's in Michigan and I'm in P.A.
I missed the original airing of this episode but just watched the entire thing online. All I can say is that the brother is innocent, the Michigan cop is an idiot out for revenge for being cut out of Tom's movie and Kenny definetly has something there with the neighbor that is in jail for a VERY similar crime as the one committed against Jennifer. Also, SHAME on the cop that accused the Morgan family of having anything to do with their daughter's (sister's) death.
This story is probally one of the best storys I have ever watched. Now that I watch the story I am going to sit back and watch the movie again. I was an extra in the movie when they produced this back in 2004. I had read the script most of the way through and it was put together very well. But now that I have seen the story on Dateline it makes me wander myself....who really did do it. Thank you MSNBC for doing this story and too all who read this you should go out and get the movie and watch it. I went and bought a copy when it was released and everyone who watches it enjoys it.
I think Pat Moag achieved his goal. He is now a "known" figure in the media. Many aspiring directors try to find ways to jumpstart their career.
Unfortunately, Mr Moag used a sad story about an unsolved murder to do so. People will do anything to
find success. Tom is a genuine person, Pat Moag should be ashamed. I am totally blown away, shocked, and completely angry that the Morgan's haven't pressed charges against Mr. Moag. Please, if any of the family members read this, I am a lawyer, and from what I've seen on dateline you have a case against Pat Moag for defimation of character and slander with malitious intent. Please put this pathetic excuse for a cop in a court room. I hate no one, but this is the closest I've come to doing so. Poor Jennifer, I want to express my deepest regrets to the Morgan's.

When asked what would be the proper punishment for whoever killed Jennifer...Tom said, whatever the courts decide...WHAT?!...That is not what you would be thinking if they killed your sister whom you loved and were sooo close to...Tom is a LIAR...and how was it that his lie detector test was an error?
I watched the program last night and it was extremely compelling. I put it on while flipping through the channels and for two hours, I was glued. Very well done.

To say that Pat Moag is a nut case is too much of an understatement. Here's a cop gone bad. He lied through his teeth when he said being replaced as director had nothing to do with his obsession to frame Tom Morgan. Moag reminds me of those old time Jim Crow sheriff deputies who had hanging trees all around town. "They's guilty 'cuz I says so. Hangum!" Where was the white substance the coroner never found? When did Tom Morgan say it was vanilla ice cream he brought over to his sister's in the semi-fictional screenplay? Where was the proof the family covered up her death? To accuse poor Jennifer's father and other brother, too? Wow, I sure am glad he never pulled me over. I think we've all run across cops like him. Personally, I think he should have been a security guard in a fast food restaurant parking lot somewhere. Why would a career cop still act like a cop wannabee? Hey, Pat, stay away from Orlando. We don't like your kind around here! Maybe, I'm your guy, but I have an alibi. Too bad you're not smart enough to check it out because you hate to be wrong.

As far as Jennifer's brother, of course he's going to have a strong opinion of who did it. If my sister died, I would go after that creep and be just as obsessed about his guilt as the idiot cop was with him. The major difference between the star cast members, Pat & Tom, is that Tom was the victim's brother. The cop was laughed all the way back to Michigan with only intangible evidence between his ears. What was that comment he made? Something about not caring who he put in jail? Something about not caring if they're innocent? I wonder how many people he personally obsessed over and now they are locked away. Ego, ego, ego. Good thing he doesn't have authority to arrest people all over the world like he dreams of.

Oh, thank you, Mr. Morrison. It was a superb piece of journalism. I did not feel it was slanted in any sense of the word. Moag did it to himself.
dateline this is to you. you approved the nutcase comments against pat moug but you wouldnt post my comment about how none of the viewers got the whole story from your show.
Moag was correct about there being a narcissist in this sad story, but it was not Tom Morgan.  Moug is the sorriest excuse for a law enforcement officer I've ever heard of.  His parents, and the good citizens of Livonia, Michigan should be ashamed.
Hello, I just viewed this story today Oct. 14, 2007. With regard to the Jennifer Morgan case. I am very intersted in what is happening now. As well as wanting to know how the last few minutes ended? My DVR cut to another program to be recorded. I would like to know if you have a schedule either weekly or monthly? Will this show be aired again and when. Thank you for these programs they are very informative.
would like to know when this will air agian
It's Saturday morning, Jan. 12, 2008, and I interrupted my bread making to watch MSNBC's documentary on the death of Jennifer Morgan. It aired from 6 to 8 am. EST. I can't, by any stretch of the imagination, think that Tom Morgan or any member of his family had anything to do with his sister's death. With 10 minutes remaining, I was hoping that there would be some sort of a conclusion to this baffling mystery. I feel everyone connected to this investigation wasn't really seeing the big picture, they can't see the forest for the tree.Instead of focusing on Jennifer's immediate family, they should broaden their sights on any possible outside person/persons of interest. Unfortunabely, this airing, although informative, was anti-climatic. There will be closure for the family, just keep the faith because through God, all things will come to pass.
I also went to Francis Marion with Jennifer and she was my neighbor at the on campus apartments for 2 years. I remember the day she was moving out to move to the trailer park across the street. She said she was just ready to move off campus. I always felt like the trailer park was shady and was confused on why she and her friend would move over there. But all that does not matter. What does matter is that an innocent girl with her whole life ahead of her is not here anymore and some killer is out there. I think we should all concentrate on finding the killer. Her brother had an alibi a solid one. As for her boyfriend , I knew him too. I would be shocked if he had anything to do with this. Shocked but do understand that people snap. However, I don't know. We need to pray her murder be brought to justice. God Bless You Jennifer
