The virtual embrace

by Hoda Kotb, Dateline correspodent and Virginia Tech graduate

My report on “Dateline” tonight is about the virtual embrace the world has been giving Virginia Tech – online, by loving friends and sympathetic strangers.

It warmed up my heart and my keyboard hearing from all of you. I received dozens of emails from old college friends, and hundreds of blog responses from my post/piece on “Dateline” last night.

As Stone said on tonight’s broadcast, tragedies of this magnitude have a way of making the world a very small place. With the help of the Internet in times like this, the world does indeed become a village.

Dateline did a superb job of portraying the victims as real people and not just statistics. They asked questions of fault and lacking, to a group that is yet still too shell-shocked over the tragedy, to be able to address any liabilities. Blacksburg is a beautiful and serene place, as is Virginia Tech's campus, which makes it all the harder to accept. Much as Dateline has brought faces and memories to the forefront, so should we bring the faces and memories of our fallen soldiers, as they too are the young and impressionable and destined for greatness as those who attended VT and are no longer among us.
UVA alums support VT. WE are ALL HOKIES today and tomorrow and always-Susan
It is very sad, this shooting, and my heart goes out to all the victims and their families. And the young man, so very angry, seemed he thought that this was the only solution to what he thought were the problems he seemed to face for which he could not find resolve.
Seeing how the students have responded to this tragedy makes me even more proud to be a VT graduate. Hokie pride will survive this. We will survive this. "We are Virginia Tech" Class of 1991
My heart and prayers go out to the V-Tech Community
