Diane Zamora and the lie detector test results

When I interviewed David Graham for Dateline shortly after his murder conviction in 1998, the handsome former Air Force Academy cadet looked me straight in the eye and swore he wasn't even there the night 16-year-old Adrianne Jones was killed.

He blamed it on his girlfriend.

Graham insisted it was Diane Zamora who picked Adrianne up that night, Diane who drove her to a secluded road in Grand Prairie, Texas, and Diane who shot her in the head. Of course, he was lying through his teeth and later admitted as much. In a recent letter to Dateline producer Ellen Sherman, Graham described his interview with me as "not (his) finest hour."

He blamed it on his lawyer.

Given Graham's affinity for fabrication, I wondered what my interview with Diane Zamora would be like. Like Graham, she had been convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison. Was the former mid-shipman cut from the same cloth? Or, nearly a decade after the crime, would she tell me the truth?

When she approached our camera position from behind a glass partition, Diane appeared demure and depressed. The defiant look she had worn through much of her trial had disappeared, but not for long.

Zamora claimed that she was the victim of verbal and sexual abuse by David Graham, misconduct by police, and mistakes by a jury she believes ignored exculpatory evidence. Yes, she was wrong not to have gone to police right after the murder. Yes, she obstructed justice by helping to cover up the crime for nine months. But Zamora insisted she only went along that night to question Adrianne Jones, not to kill her. It was Graham who planned the murder, she said, and Graham who carried it out.

Zamora told me all she wanted was for people to take a closer look at the evidence. Dateline did. And, indeed, looking back at her trial there was testimony from prosecution witnesses to support some of her claims. But there are also more than a few contradictions in her story.

In the weeks following the interview, a thought occurred to me. Years earlier, during a previous visit with Zamora, she had mentioned to me that she wished she could take a lie detector test. She said her story was the only one that fit the facts and seemed confident that she would pass. I wondered if that was something she was still interested in doing.

So, as we finished preparing our report, I wrote Diane a letter reminding her of our conversation and telling her that Dateline might be able to arrange a polygraph if she was willing to take one. She wrote us back immediately. Her answer was yes. Her lawyer approved. She took the test.

We all knew it wouldn't change anything legally.

Still, the results might give viewers something more to consider in this classic "he said, she said." Zamora saw it as an opportunity to salvage some dignity and, perhaps, a degree of vindication. If not for herself, she said, it was worth doing for her mother, who has stood by Diane from the beginning. She knew that we were going to broadcast the results, no matter what the outcome. I would return to the prison and, with cameras rolling, give her the results.

It would be a first for Zamora... and me.

In my 25 years as a news correspondent, I had never gone back to an interview subject with the results of a lie detector test. Suffice to say, the tension was running high-- a convicted murderer, proclaiming her innocence, presented with the outcome of a long-awaited truth test.

When it was over, we both got up from our chairs. Drained.

Stone Phillips' report on the case airs Dateline Sunday, April 8, 8 p.m.

guilty stop feeling sorry for killers and pray for the victim
I believe Diane Zamora is completely consciousless, and a coldblooded killer. I followed closely the arrest and trial of Zamora and David Miller....and felt the pain of Adrienne Jones' family and friends in their loss. I certainly believe Diane tried to manipulate her lie detector test.
Diane is guilty as charged. She showed absolutely no remorse in this matter. She was to calm and to hesitant to think of what to say and was repeating. If that were me and I was proving my innocent as it were no lie, I would be all up in tears and quick to say the truth. If I were lieing about my innocents then I would definately be acting like Diane. Guilty, I say, Guilty as charged. She cares nothing of Adrianne's family. Only herself. As for David, I think he was going along with what Diane was telling him to do out of Diane's jealousy for David cheating on Diane with Adrianne. He is innocent.
I would say, it's time to move on. The right people are behind bars for the brutal murder! Zamora is a "black widow".
Diane Zamora is a young woman living in a prison she, alone built. The night she took away a life and then lied about not doing it,sealed her fate. God will not let injustice be forgotten nor the victim. I think we should all pray for Diane, that one day she will face her demons and admit what she did.
She is guilty. Case closed.
I watched all of this when it first happened, I saw the made for TV movie, and now this...this is the guiltiest person! Does she really think we are all gullable enough to believe that she didn't do it? She is beyond guilty!! The lie detector (which she tried to "fool") could not be fooled as easily as she had hoped. Sadly only she and David know the truth, but obviously neither of them is ever going to tell the truth. I hope they know there is no place in Heaven for liars and murders!!
Diane is guilty as guilty can be. I feel that she is just trying to make David look like he planned and did it all! She is a jealous and hated the fact that David slept with Adrianne. I feel very sorry for the Jones family and the Zamore family.
I just finished watching the interview and heard about the polygraph test. I do not believe she is telling the truth. She changed her story so many times and if she was really innocent after the polygraph test she would have been confident. Instead she was making up a reason already for what she had tried to do....mess up her polygraph. She is where she needs to be...a very messed up individual.
Zamora showed me tonight that she trully is guilty. She is where she deserves to be. What a pathetic woman.
I THINK THAT DIANE ZAMORA IS QUILTY AS SIN, THE ONLY THING IS SHE THINKS PEOPLE CAN NOT SEE THROUGH HER. BOTH OF THEM FOR WHATEVER THEIR REASONS WERE AT THE TIME KILLED THAT GIRL. HIM TO PROVE HIS LOVE FOR DIANE AND HER TO SHOW THE POWER SHE HAD OVER GRAHAM. THE SHAME IS AN INNOCENT GIRL WAS KILLED.
I HONESTLY BELIEVE ZAMORA IS LYING! I GUESS YOU CAN'T BLAME HER FOR TRYING TO GET OUT OF THIS, WITH A LIFE SENTENCE-BUT SHE DOES NOT HAVE ME FOOLED! I'M A VERY GOOD JUDGE OF CHARACTER AND I SEE THROUGH HER. SHE IS A COLD, CALCULATING MURDERER-SHE IS TRYING TO TALK HERSELF INTO BELIEVING SHE DIDN'T DO THIS-SHE IS WHERE SHE BELONGS-HOPFULLY FOR GOOD!!!
LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE
I am an avid reader of all true crime stories and I followed this and read the book as soon as it came out and I have always thought that she did it. My only questioned now is why is she trying to prove her innocents all of a sudden. I haven't heard anything about this for years and than bam, she is saying that she didn't do it. Also what was up with her appearance. I love what someone else wrote. Her cute glasses and makeup and lipstick. But when she came out after the test she looked horrible. What was that about.
I truly believe both individuals in this case are guilty and the judicial system has let the victim down. Diane and David both should be executed for this crime.
Thank you, Stone, for a great story and to show how much someone can be so selfish as to not take responsibility for taking Adrianne's life. How dare she even try to vindicate herself! She must pay her debt to society and to Arianne's family and stay behind bars for the rest of her life. I know we should not judge, but she is not worthy to walk this world free.
As a trained therapist, I knew the outcome of the lie detector test before it was revealed. It was obvious to me she was lying. She deserves to be right where she is!
Not very convincing in her interview. After ten years i think its too long to look at her emotions as a sign of the truth. The truth lies in the story she tells, which is not consistent either.
I can see the girl is trying to convince herself, she is telling the truth. No, I didn't believe her
truthfully she is sick in the head. Her story is so beyond belief. If you truthfully want people to believe you were going to break up with your boyfriend then his way of getting you back is by saying he "cheated" on you? No, that would want me to break up with him more not want to confront the girl. Also if she had another boyfriend and was scared of David then she wouldn't have gone and visited him and said I love you to him. She is completely full of it and is going to be in prision forever no matter how hard she tries to convince people, they know the truth and her lies are non-believeable.
The trial for both of them was on Court TV, she was guilty enough for both of them. I was surprised the officer said the boy was a cold blooded killer! He seemed like he was just trying to make 'her' happy!
Why didn't Stone Phillips ask her what her record has been like since she's been incarcerated? Does she have violent tendencies toward others? You can bet she doesn't play well with others in prison, either.
She wouldn't have gone to Colorado to meet with Graham if she was as afraid of him as she is now trying to claim. She wanted to make sure their stories were straight. I think she was the instigator of the entire event. She was jealous and wanted revenge for what she thought he did. Now, she's had all these years to try and concoct a story that takes her out of jail.
She is a total lier, and she's not even good at it. If you noticed, every time she answers a question, she either shuts her eyes for a momment, looks down,or she quickly answers. She has guilt, she knows it and so does everyone else. She's afraid of the truth, and besides when she took that test, she said she was nervous. If she didnt do anything why would she be nervous? oh and by the way im only twleve and i figured all this out.
I can't believe Diane thought that by having this interview, that it would change peoples mind against her guilt. You can tell that she is a very manipulative and deceptive person...She's the one who wanted to take the lie detector test in the first place...and then after being told all her answers showed deception, then she says she doesn't believe in them. What a crock. She's right where she belongs, for the rest of her natural life, after that, she will have her judgement day with God.
SIMPLY, SHE IS A LIAR.
I don't know if everyone missed the following. Diane said that she was afraid that David might kill her, when she was riding in the trunk of he car. My question is, how can she be afraid that she might get killed when they are just driving to talk to Adrianne? Unless she knew what was going to happen. In other words, she was in it since the start.
There is no doubt in my mind that both of them are guilty and deserve to spend the rest of their time on earth locked away in a prison. I am a retired police officer and I see nothing by lies in their face when they talk.
These two both bring a disgrace to the fine young men and women of our Armed Forces, especially those cadets at the Air Force Academy and at West Point. We need more citizens of our country, lead by the integrity of those at our military academies, to step up and accept responsibility for their actions, whether directly or indirectly responsible. There is a pattern of moral decay in our society, brought on by the practice of moral relativity. These two have cornered the market on that, and if I needed to look up the definition of the words "lie" or "denial" in the dictionary, I'm sure that convict Zamora's picture would be there. They would be more respected, even though guilty, if they stood up, admitted their guilt, and asked for forgiveness. Daniel May, Florence, MT
I believe she is guilty, but I also believe David is guilty as well. I do not have faith in our lie detector system that is available in all states. I do believe the lie detectors do not work appropriately...but there is other evidence that finds her guilty.
It is quite obvious she is lying, she manipulated David, tried to with Stone Phillips and even tried to manipulate the person taking the polygraph by having fake breathing problems and hyperventilating. She was the master manipulater but no more. We can see thru the lipstick and tears.
Diane Zamora is a pathological liar. It was clear during the interview that she has no respect for the truth. It's amazing to me that she was admitted to a prestigious military school with her checkered personal history.
I believe Diane Zamora is Guilty! She has excuses for everything. I don't believe she has any remorse for what she did. The only thing she pittys is the fact that she got caught and will spend the rest of her life in jail. I think Dateline should do another interview with David. I believe he lied the first time on orders of his lawyer. I think he is remorseful. I believe he was going through a stupid teenage face. Not that it makes it ok but I feel he realized that gravity of his actions unlike Zamora, who still seems to think it was a small crime. I would definetely watch that interview. Or one with both of them would even be better!!
How sad to see that we've spent another hour of our lives listening to the nonsense that this woman was spewing. Clearly she is trying to convince herself of her newfound story. She's had 10 years to practice and it still doesn't make sense. She seems to be an intelligent woman, but she doesn't have any understanding of herself at all. She is where she should be - I hope that this program can be put to some use when she comes up for parole. I'm almost embarrassed that I watched it. My prayers are with the victim's family and friends. They are the only ones who deserve our understanding.
I found dianne to be very believable.......and it was already proven in the trial that she hadn't struck the victim. She was totally under the spell of her boyfriend. Innocent of murder, but guilty of obstruction.......and, yes, an accomplice in the crime since she was present and didn't restrain her vile, psychopathic boyfriend.
I believe she is 100% guilty. Her story didn't make any sense. She was the only one with motive to kill the young lady.I don't think Diane Zamora believed her own story.
She is guilty. She was just trying to save her self. Maybe she wanted her 15 minutes on TV. I did not believe a word she spoke. I truly thought her answers were an insult to Stone Phillips and his reporting expertice. She is where she needs to be for her natural life. Then GOD will judge her.
Guilty, Guilty, Guilty. Why is Diane Zamora going to be released after 30 years when the victim received the death penalty?
Diane is a liar. She and her boyfriend had a very sick relationship. He must have been the submissive one in their tryst. I don't know if he was there or not, but she was definetly the master in the murder.
I honestly do not believe Diane for a minute. She's been in prison for 10 years and is looking for an easy way out. She should just admit what she did and suffer the consequences of her actions. By doing this she can ask for forgiveness.
Diane Zamora is where she belongs If she had nothing to hide she should have went to the police right away
Diane is a lying cold hearted killer, In all my time watching dateline, I have never been so compelled to write in my opinion on a story before.. why are we even wasting time on this person???
this lady is a killer and her polygraph test wuz not liying and she is the worst liar ever. she shood not have lied because she will just get into more trubble and she killed the person and is just so stupid to lie like that.
She sure put on a great act, didn;t she? Or tried anyway, She is so guilty....
All I can say is that sometimes people start to believe their own lies so much they swear it's the truth and I believe that was Diane's case.
Polygraph examination are questionable at best. You should have used a Computer Voice Stress Analyzer. It is more reliable and there is no question regarding deception or no deception. All results are conclusive and breathing does not enter into the equation. As long as a person knows the difference between right and wrong there will be a result.
Diane claims she got into the trunk of the car motivated only by the desire to talk to Adrienne Jones. I immediately thought of many cases I've seen on Judge Judy. Someone is suing for hospital bills caused by a vicious assault. The defendant claims to have gone to where the plaintiff lived [or worked] to "talk." I think that sane, non-criminals don't seek conversation with people they've had conflict with.
She wasn't very convincing... I believe that she is just trying to work the system. Society gives breaks to women more so than to men! She's a killer and should stay behind bars. That's where she belongs! Thanks to Stone for once again bringing out the truth and showing that the justice system still works.
I do not believe a word she says.
This stupid girl is not even a good liar! Innocent people do NOT confess! Period. Does she really think people believe anything that comes out of her mouth. Her tears are not for the poor girl she helped murder or for the girl's family, but for her own losses suffered from her actions. Finally, she is not brave to have taken the lie detector test, as handsome Stone Phillips suggested, she is plain stupid!!!!
