Diane Zamora and the lie detector test results

When I interviewed David Graham for Dateline shortly after his murder conviction in 1998, the handsome former Air Force Academy cadet looked me straight in the eye and swore he wasn't even there the night 16-year-old Adrianne Jones was killed.

He blamed it on his girlfriend.

Graham insisted it was Diane Zamora who picked Adrianne up that night, Diane who drove her to a secluded road in Grand Prairie, Texas, and Diane who shot her in the head. Of course, he was lying through his teeth and later admitted as much. In a recent letter to Dateline producer Ellen Sherman, Graham described his interview with me as "not (his) finest hour."

He blamed it on his lawyer.

Given Graham's affinity for fabrication, I wondered what my interview with Diane Zamora would be like. Like Graham, she had been convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison. Was the former mid-shipman cut from the same cloth? Or, nearly a decade after the crime, would she tell me the truth?

When she approached our camera position from behind a glass partition, Diane appeared demure and depressed. The defiant look she had worn through much of her trial had disappeared, but not for long.

Zamora claimed that she was the victim of verbal and sexual abuse by David Graham, misconduct by police, and mistakes by a jury she believes ignored exculpatory evidence. Yes, she was wrong not to have gone to police right after the murder. Yes, she obstructed justice by helping to cover up the crime for nine months. But Zamora insisted she only went along that night to question Adrianne Jones, not to kill her. It was Graham who planned the murder, she said, and Graham who carried it out.

Zamora told me all she wanted was for people to take a closer look at the evidence. Dateline did. And, indeed, looking back at her trial there was testimony from prosecution witnesses to support some of her claims. But there are also more than a few contradictions in her story.

In the weeks following the interview, a thought occurred to me. Years earlier, during a previous visit with Zamora, she had mentioned to me that she wished she could take a lie detector test. She said her story was the only one that fit the facts and seemed confident that she would pass. I wondered if that was something she was still interested in doing.

So, as we finished preparing our report, I wrote Diane a letter reminding her of our conversation and telling her that Dateline might be able to arrange a polygraph if she was willing to take one. She wrote us back immediately. Her answer was yes. Her lawyer approved. She took the test.

We all knew it wouldn't change anything legally.

Still, the results might give viewers something more to consider in this classic "he said, she said." Zamora saw it as an opportunity to salvage some dignity and, perhaps, a degree of vindication. If not for herself, she said, it was worth doing for her mother, who has stood by Diane from the beginning. She knew that we were going to broadcast the results, no matter what the outcome. I would return to the prison and, with cameras rolling, give her the results.

It would be a first for Zamora... and me.

In my 25 years as a news correspondent, I had never gone back to an interview subject with the results of a lie detector test. Suffice to say, the tension was running high-- a convicted murderer, proclaiming her innocence, presented with the outcome of a long-awaited truth test.

When it was over, we both got up from our chairs. Drained.

Stone Phillips' report on the case airs Dateline Sunday, April 8, 8 p.m.

This girl should have absolutely not a minute of our time to try and explain her actions. She is a killer, whether she struck the victim or not. There is a mother here who has lost her daughter in a most obscene way. Both killers should rot in prison the rest of their lives.
I cant believe that i took the time to read this only to see that the results of the lie detector test will be on Dateline. I will never read this blog again as it is only a teaser to get you to watch the news program. Reminds me of the movie Christmas Story when Ralphie waited for the decoder ring and then listened to a Radio show only to find out the secret message was a commercial. That is precisely what you have done, piqued my interest and no follow thru except find the results on Datrline. Well no more for me
Zamora may well have been a victim of her heart and a used participent. A chance to clear herself or at least reduce her sentence should be made available to her.
I'm surprised they didn't accuse Adrianne Jones of killing herself, and doing so in a way to make them appear guilty!
I honestly believe Diana was the instigater of the murder of Adrian Jones. She was just a jealous witch with no regard for a prettier girl her boyfriend had a crush on. Adrian Jones was more than beautiful she was someone's daughter. Diana and her Mother both deserve what they got. For one thing, they tried to blame Diana's actions on her Mother's life when her Father had other women in his life. DAH!!! It happens everyday and other daughters dont go out and take it out on an innocent person. I have no sympathy or Diana or her Mother.
darn you Stone Phillips, the cliffhanger is intolerable cruelty...I guess i'll just have to wait until tomorrow like everyone else
I remember a comment someone made after the trial....."NO MORA ZAMORA"
Did she pass or not?
These 2 individuals took someone's life that truly had little to do with their past, present, or future. The fact that Zamore went along with the act and her boyfriend so long speaks volumes as to her intent. If she hadn't discussed it with a roommate months later would we even know now? Is this attempt to exonerate herself about regret or guilt?
Another stupid story that has no meaning... why didn't you also do what believe is called a brain scan on her. At least that would be more accurate than a lie detector test! http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4197049
Please, please, please she is such the victim, I can understand a teen trying to cover for her boyfriend with the police. Stupid but viable, Diane's only problem she confided under no pressure to her dorm mates at the academy that she did it. Was that to protect David too? Not that they knew David, had heard of the murder, or even suspected the crime. She did it there is no doubt in my mind. It would take alot more than a lie detector test to convince me otherwise. Now she does not want to do the time. To bad I am sure her victim didn't want to die either but there you have it she did. Buck up Diane be all that you can be but do it from behind bars.
There is far to much sensationalism within the news media and the courts. Verdicts are arrived at more by circumstantial evidence than facts when the case is nationalized. The news media loves it, for the moeny it brings in, and at the same time the reporters words has no more value than spit, especially these days and times because of their liberal ploys and thoughts of being super self important. No lie is to big if it acquires the end results desired. One has but to look at the O.J.S. trial. It was a circus of sensationalism and a judicial system that failed. And that's facts!
It should be interesting to see what the results are. It's possible she is telling the truth, maybe not.
THat is typical media BS to try and fish hook people into watching a show later on and now I have to wait til the 8th?
I really don't care what a confessed and convicted killer has to say to a television reporter. In my judgement she's guilty and smart enough to fool a lie detector test.
Polygraph tests are not 100 percent accurate, or they would be allowed in court. IT is actually possible to fail a polygraph test even though you told the entire truth. I paid to have myself polygraphed and submitted only questions I knew I could answer truthfully, easily. I failed one question, even though I told the truth, and I don't know why. Except that, if you google on polygraphs, you will find stories of other people who told the truth in a polygraph situation and the polygraph test said they were deceptive. Polygraph tests are not accurate.
Who Cares IF she did it. She is where she belongs. Shame on her and the boyfriend for taking another life and then lying about it.
Zamora new that night that Graham had planned to kill Diane (she said she knew of the plan to kill Diane) . Knowing that and then going along, not contacting police or anyone else, to me shows she agreed with the killing and went along with it. She is just as guilty as Graham.
"oh the suspense" is right! You lead me on a pictorial story path, like a lover in hand, and then dropped me in the lake. Will I ever learn of the results? What if I miss the show due to life events, will it air again or will I have to surf the net until I can find the end of the road?
i think there are many people who would benefit from a lie detector test and many who would not benefit. to know someone killed someone and not inform the proper authorities is as bad as killing someone yourself
Hi, This is to let you know that I do not believe in poligraph results due to the fact that the poligraph is NOT a scientifically proven/reliable tool for the task it is assigned/given. Thanks for your time, Dr. Jorge Robles
We are freeing innocent people after being in prison for years after they have a DNA test. Should this not hold so for Lie Detector Test?
The polygraph, together with astrology, ouiji board, tea leaves, and assorted paranormal nonsense, must be ranked right alongside other urban and medieval folklore. A phrase from Gibbon's "DECLINE" , referring to another great myth seems appropriate for Easter Sunday; "it was considered by the people as equally true; by the philosophers as equally false; and by the magistrates [journalists] as equally USEFUL.
How dare you interview this killer she had a jury trial and was convicted of her crime the victoms, her parents made sure they wouldnt be given death. She should be thanking her blessings that they did that. How dare you giving her any chance to talk to any one an live TV. She makes me sick looking at her, I wish Adrian could talk to camera's and tell everyone what the cold hearted killer did to her. Diane will have to talk to an important person one day, HER MAKER JESUS CHRIST that is the one who will decide. God have mercy on her soul. That is all I have to say. But one thing you have hurt Adrian's parents you owe them an opolegy.
I feel she should have never went to the victom's house if she wanted to talk to her she should have called her on the phone first then things might have been difforrent.
I think Diane is a pathological liar. Listening to her story, it was obvious to me the stress in her voice and the improv details she seemed to come up with as the story went along.. She is where she deserves to be. I pray for the family of AJ.
She was convicted by a jury after bragging to other cadets and then confessing to the murder. She is guilty. Case closed.
No, I don't belive her,I saw every piece of information in all the Texas channels, English and Spanish , to me and most of people in Texas, she is a big liar , the guy really didn't look capable of doing anything without somebody leading. She's a wolf trying to wear sheep's skin. Jessu Pérez-Tapia
It is SO VERY apparent she is lying.. and it must be pathological, because you could tell she really expects people to believe it. Come on, who would hide in a car trunk to "talk" to someone.. Any other female would have confronted the other woman, at school, or whereever, not in the woods somewhere. She is 100% guilty and I am just glad she is behind bars.. She's a fruit cake..
Zamora is nothing but a pathalogical liar and a MONSTER..Its too bad that she didn't get the death penalty..The only thing worse is that Dateline is giving her story airtime when the real story is be about the tragedy of the Jones family.. SHAME ON YOU NBC..
I can not comment on if she is guilty or not however, I am shocked and appaulled at Zamora's appearance. What gives her the right as a convicted killer to what seems to appear to be fashionable eyeglasses but not only that the ability to afford a dentist. There are thousand of U.S. citizen who have not comitted a crime but they have no medical or dental insurance. Is this the only way for someone to qualify for those services?
Are you kidding?? She's as guilty as sin!! Her story is so lame!! Give me a break! D. Sommer
Regardless of the polygraph results, she is guilty. Please keep in mind that she has had around 10 years to convince herself enough to pass a polygraph. Her story is full of holes and is an insult to the Jones family.
I think Diane is guilty through and through She is playing us in order to try to save herself There needs to be justice for Adrianne
She sure has a lot of people fooled. David had no reason to kill Adrianne Jones except for the prompting from Diane.
There are so many holes in her story it's despicable. First she says David was controlling and horrible and she wanted to get away from him after he killed Adrian, then she VOLUNTARILY flies to Colorado to meet him, still maintaining that she was scared to death of him. That is complete bull. And she says her confession shouldn't be admissable because she lied? Well, honey, that's your confession. You can't write two of them and it's your own problem for lying to law enforcement officers.
Diane is guilty...the case was such a waste of young lives, Adrianne for losing her life, Diane and David for such a horrible, unforgiveable idea. God have mercy on them all.
Don't know why the gal is not on death row.
I read a very detailed article in Texas Monthly about this in the late 1990's, when the story was fresh, that was very damning against Diane. She has had plenty of time to mix with other inmates and get their great "methods" of beating the polygraph. Unfortunately, they did not work. I cannot say I heard anything else convincing from her that would change my mind.
She is where she belongs. She is just looking back and wishing she wouldn't have killed Adrianne because the rest of her life will be lived behind bars! Don't give them anymore airtime.
She wouldn't have gone to Colorado to meet with Graham if she was as afraid of him as she is now trying to claim. She wanted to make sure their stories were straight. I think she was the instigator of the entire event. She was jealous and wanted revenge for what he thought he did. Now, she's had all these years to try and concoct a story that takes her out of jail.
She may be sorry now, but she was a cold hearted killer the night she became a murderer. She is as guilty as sin and should be in jail until the day she dies. Clearly she is a narcisistic, sociopathic murderer and her behavior now really proves it beyond a doubt. She had control over David and thinks she can control us. Please - don't waste anymore of our time, she is right where she belongs, just throw away the key. The last thing she deserves is time on national television.
I am 62 years of age ... and recognize manipulation when I see it. Clearly this woman is a manipulator ... There are people in this world who lie to the point where they no longer recognize lies even when they tell them. Diane is clearly one of these people. Apparently she was never taught to take responsibility for her actions. The only person she is fooling is herself. The best thing she can do is TAKE THE TRUTH AND DEAL WITH IT. She is what she is through her own choices. Each of us are what we are as a result of the choices WE make in our lives. Does she know the word "Integrity"? Integrity is the only thing we OWN. Nobody can steal it from us. She lost hers a long time ago. What a pity.
The whole time I watched this interview I kept saying to myself, this woman is a a sociopath. She can't even tell when she's lying, and worst, doesn't seem to care. After hearing the results of the lie detector test, I was convinced that I was correct. I'm sure the tester was accustomed to people who are "nervous" about the test, and the fact that he repeatedly told her to stop breathing the way she did is an indication that he knew she was attempting to alter the results--unsuccessfully, it appears.
what a waste of so many lives. it seems to make the case that many times really book smart and high achieving individuals are idiots when it comes to managing their romantic lives i.e. the diapered astronaut. I am glad my daughter is more well rounded, and not upset that she will NOT be going to the Naval Academy or astronaut school!
Diane Michelle Zamora is EVIL! After all these years, admit it. She is a habitual LIAR! Doesn't even know the TRUTH. She is CRAZY! All seriousness......she is partly responsible and trying to get out of it, hence wasting the public's time and Dateline's. You guys could have aired something valid in place of a LOSER! To Adrianne's parents..............You daughter was a beautiful, promising, young lady and apparently, she had something much more important to do! She is an ANGEL!
I believe she is a liar, but I don't have any faith in the lie detector tests either. I believe they may have a certain amount of accuracy on some people, but I believe they would be truly inaccurate with some people because of nervousness or their abilities to convince themselves that they are telling the truth.
Diane Zamora is a smart woman however, with ten years to practice and refine her story she still comes across as a liar and a murderer. Stone did a great job in exposing her for what she really is!
What swayed my opinion the most was the comment that David had NO conscience but Diane was really sorry...regardless, they are both where they belong.
I believe the Lie detector test could have been off due to her nervousness and the results were inconclusive. The more they warned her to counter her breathing techniques, the meore she was self conscious... whatever the case may be, she is behind bars for many years.
