The 'predator' series in our own words

This “To Catch A Predator” special takes a look back at our earlier investigations as well as a look forward at some critical areas involving online predators we’ve yet to explore.

More important, it’s told in a unique way. Producer Lynn Keller interviewed me, Del and Frag from the online watchdog group Perverted-Justice, some of the law enforcement officers who ran parallel investigations to arrest the men we confronted, and a prosecutor.

The story is told in essentially our own words. It will take you behind the scenes, going back to our very first investigation in Long Island, New York. You’ll see how the investigations developed and became more sophisticated. There are moments that are startling, disturbing and in a few instances even humorous. We’ll answer some of the questions you’ve raised here on the blog.

You may know that I recently wrote a book called “To Catch A Predator” in an effort to explore several important aspects of this subject that we’ve not had time to flesh out on television. One of those areas is that of collateral damage--  what happens to the wives and children of the men who are arrested. You’ll meet Darlene Calvin who appears in the book and you’ll hear the inspirational story of how she put her life back together after her husband’s arrest. You’ll also hear the unique prospective of Bob Shilling, a Seattle Police detective who investigates sex crimes against children, who himself was the victim of sexual abuse as a child.

Take a look at the program. I think you’ll find it interesting and insightful.

To Chris Hansen, I was wondering if you knew about the kid in Fort Myers his last name was Schumacher. He has since been arrested several times in Charlotte County , FL since your broadcast in Fort Myers.I believe one arrest was for fondling a female. Just thought i might want to know this. Keep up the good work.
I think this show is the best on T.V. and to take these discusting people off the streets from praying on our children.
Thanks for answering viewers questions. Thanks for having great answers. What you are doing is a service to the community and shows that all you are doing is scraping the surface of this hideous behavior. These are some of the worst crimes imaginable and they should pay with decades of their lives if not their whole life. This is not a curable crime.
Thank you so much for this episode! I know that there are so many people that are out there that don't get the full story of the show. The behind-the-scenes look, the mistakes, the follow-ups, the real explanation of "ENTRAPMENT", etc. This particular episode was very insightful. THANK YOU!!!
Dear Chris I've recently been watching the show and think it's a great service to get these guys off the street. I hope that they are all being convicted and sentenced to the maximum penalties. I do have one concern however. Doing some research into "perverted justice" it appears that they have been known to try and play detective, judge and jury. There are many stories of people working for this group who have harassed the suspects etc. Things like constantly calling these guys, posting photos of them in their neighborhood etc. While it's hard to feel sorry for any of these men, I strongly disagree with a group of citizens assuming this much power. Is Dateline aware of these activities committed by members of perverted justice? Are these types of things still going on. Do the owners of perverted justice realize they are nothing more than concerned citizens and their job stops when the suspect is turned over to the police? If these issues have been addressed, I say "go get em".
chris, my name is colie, and i wanted to let you know how thankful i am for your show. i cry everytime i watch it. i was molested for 3 years as a child, and my son was molested 3 times before i found out. the man that molested christian got off with child endangerment becasue a confession is not substancial (spelling) evidence for a conviction. he was my ex husband, and he gave my son genital warts, but it still was not enough proof. to me, it seems that this subject is stil hush-hush and not enough people care. it takes courage to confront those that hurt, and even more to show the world you will not tolerate this crap anymore. thank you so much, for speaking on behalf of myself and my son, and all the others that have to suffer at the hands of a vicious cycle.
thank you Chris. I praise what you do! Your work is so important to children and the world. thank you. please do not stop your work!
Wow~! I can believe I seen someone I know. My husband went to Iraq with Fort. Stewart in 2005-2006. During his time in Iraq, he had soldiers under him which include Rolando Resto!!!! One day we were watching dateline and seen him and couldn't believe it Wow!! The crazy thing about it is that he has a daughter that's 16 years old.........wow
thank you Chris. I praise what you do! Your work is so important to children and the world. thank you. please do not stop your work!
I have never been so proud of a stranger before in my life! Your segmant on Dateline is an awesome inspiration for me and my friends to go out and help the cause. Please keep up the work! You and your crew, and the police who work with you make the world a better place each & everytime you expose these monsters.
I am really interested in this show so much that I would love to work with the law enforcement to catch some of these predators.
I have seen several episodes of the show and it is good to see that some if not all of the people involved get some kind of sentence (justice) that they deserved. My concern is with most of the people involved has either seen your Dateline show or have debated going to see your decoy knowing it was wrong but they still go anyway. Apparently most of the people involved have some kind of mental sickness that leads them to go through the act. It would be interesting to see (psychology) what makes the people involved do what they do. P.S. You guys do a good job getting the word out.
PERFECT!!! KEEP IT UP!!! So you guysand/or girls don't want to get caught then don't go there or do it. If you can't stop then I HOPE YOU GET CAUGHT!!! DO NOT STOP!! Make them worry, make them think and make them oay if they are that stupid. You are protecting our children and grand children. NOTE**** Please do not print my email.***
Will the series continue? PLEASE continue until you run out of "customers" -- you are doing crucial work!
Why has there not been charges brought against the ex congressman Mark Foley out of Florida for doing the same dam thing. What, because he is a congressman he gets away with it.
To Chris Hansen and the entire Dateline crew: You are doing a wonderful thing. I just saw your special this evening and I just want to give you guys a HUGE pat on the back for going after these individuals. Please, please don't stop. Our children need to be protected and these guys need to be caught. Keep it up no matter what the critics say. It is not entrapment; these individuals know exactly what they are doing. Thank-you so much!
I would just like to know about the real kids out there that are doing this. Where are their parents and why are they not monitoring their internet activity? If the kids were stopped then the bad guys would not have anyone to talk to. Can you please do a story on the real kids that are doing this and maybe find out why they would want to meet an old man with gray hair or a stranger to have sex with.
Thanks, Chris! Your show is a "must-see". You've inspired my children to not only stay off the internet, you've inspired my son to be the next Perverted Justice interviewee. Thanks, again, for all you do. It must be rough to put this behind you and try to live a normal life in between tapings with all of the disgusting "wrongs" you see. God Bless!
This was the best show yet, letting us know more about what goes on afterward. I thought the shows were almost all alike, then saw the ones at the beach,,,now this. GOOD GOING,,,,KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!! and thanks for telling us about Chris Hansens worry's over the program.
To Dateline and Chris, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your program. Considering how long this problem has existed, I am glad to see somebody doing something. I especially find it gratifying that a news program is doing something that helps society and is not just looking for high ratings, although I hope you are getting high ratings for your program. I TIVO it everytime it's on and share it with friends and family. Once again thank you for your interest in protecting our children.
I think that what Chris Hansen and all who are with him are doing is great! Please continue to reveal problems that need fixing. Sometimes the truth hurts and is ugly. But, it's better to know and be able to do something about it. Again, thank you Chris Hansen and staff.
Its a double edged sword you can either let the pervert go free and the pervert targets many children or you can arrest the pervert and it destorys their families lives. No winners many losers just like every other illegal activity.
Do you think that Dateline NBC "To Catch A Predator, will ever come to Manhattan or to Brooklyn?
Great job getting the word out Chris. I think you should come to the Midwest sometime, I know there are plenty of people doing stupid stuff like that that need to be made aware they are doing something wrong and illegal. And states need to up their punishment. Nice job on Imus this morning too.
We think the show is great! My fiance and I support you guys 110 PERCENT! We wish you would come to our area (Harrisburg, PA). It is so satisfying to see petifiles being exposed and brought to justice! You guys make us feel that our children have less of a chance of falling prey to online sexual preditors. The more you catch, the better! Please head our way! We are very proud of you and appreciate what your doing! I have to question why people would even criticize the good that your show is doing for our children?! What is wrong with these people?!!! Keep up the good work and don't stop! :0)
You make a good point at how the judges are giving out light sentences. It's a disgrace. These guys are predators and creeps, from all walks of society. They should be in jail so that kids and adolescents are safe and so that other people like their wives and girlfriends and women who haven't met them yet are spared the pain of having to deal with something as horrible as what these guys do. Really, the judges should be identified so that they can be thrown off the bench or out of office. Keep up the good work and come to NYC and put some of these creeps who live here away.
PLEASE start a podcast of the investigations!
Dear Chris and Perverted-Justice, You both deserve your own respective accolades for the work you do. At first I too thought from a viewer perspective what you might be doing is entrapment, but after seeing episode, after episode, it dawned on me that you simply are speeding up the process, yes, of pedophile predators, but you're doing it in a fashion that makes our communities safer, and for that reason alone, it's not entrapment, because if they did it from some underage prompt on the internet, who knows what can prompt them to commit these acts in their real-life surroundings at home. Chris -- I'm truly thankful and proud someone like you exists to bring journalism to a new tier that exposes the dark sides of America, and isn't afraid to show that this problem ISN'T going away, and WON'T go away for a while. Perverted-Justice -- you do the legwork and fear not, your work is not going unappreciated. I have friends who were molested as young children, and your work speaks to me personally. People need to be held accountable. I can't thank you enough, and even if that wasn't enough, you make the journalism segments entertaining, and tv-worthy, rather than a boring documentary style. Chris Hansen has the style and rhetoric to keep this series alive. If you have any doubts about keeping this series going, please reconsider. I want to be able to watch this series until the day I die because it's entertaining and serves a purpose to the community, unlike 99% of the other hogwash programs on the television. You do the world a service with what you do, and I only wish I can somehow one day contribute to the cause. Chris Hansen is the new face of real-world journalism. Anderson Cooper can eat his heart out.
I love watching your show! I NEVER thought I would know someone exposed on your show, but I did! Last fall, I saw one of the predators that was one of my husband's soldiers! I wasn't surprised to see him exposed because we all knew what he did. He even chatted while stationed in Iraq! Keep up the good work!
I hope Long Beach CA realizes, that when predators see that they can get away with probation in that town, the predators will be arriving in droves.
First of all I'd like to congratulate Chris Hansen and Dateline for all their efforts. This is the most entertaining show on television! It amazes me that the class of people being busted don't think they've done anything wrong. This needs to be an ongoing series! You guys are the greatest!
Just writing to say good work. Yall should have dozens of Chris Hansens around the country exposing these cowards. Spotlighting these spinless pansies on national T.V. is priceless. Making a series on how when they get sent to prison and how other prisoners have their way with them would be even better! Keep up the good work. David Raby Nashville TN
Dear Mr. Hansen, I have always wondered what happened to the rabbi. This is one of the best shows on television right now. I really hope that you will continue your work and look at yourself as an advocate. The truth is that this is going on in America and all around the world. Children continue to be abused or go missing due to talking with individuals online. Great work, and this is not ENTRAPMENT!! I was wondering if your show could try maybe catching predators in an inner city area, in another country, or after every show give tips to parents about online activity of their children.
Is it against the law to talk to people in chat rooms? An older person could be talking to an underaged person and never know it. I know someone who is doing this and I keep telling him its wrong and of course he feels that he is doing nothing wrong and knows how old that person is. The whole thing is sick....please help me with some answers~
Thank you Chris Hanson for doing these shows. 4 years ago my husband and the father of my 3 children was arrested on charges of child pornography. Your show tonight touched on the families of these predators. I think rarely does the public think about how it has affected us and hard it is to hold your head up in a small community and go on to rebuild our lives. We have done nothing wrong, we also are victims. I appauld the woman that was on as it takes alot of coursge to be able go on with our lives and deal with all the fallout from the arrests. There needs to be a support group of some kind for the families of the predators. I would be happy to be involved and to be able to help these families. If there is such a group let me know.
Chris,I feel what you have done has help everyone in a new way. I have a 2yr old son and the thought of someone harm hem or any child in that way just makes me sick so thank you and everyone you work with on this thanks alot. Holly P.S.do you ever thank you will come to Oklahoma to do a story.
I think the show is great but I notice that the middle class and upper class neighborhoods are where you are finding these predators. I think law enforcement needs to patrol these neighborhoods instead of harrasing urban neighborhoods because 75% of the people you catch are upper and middle class whites.
thank you chris just to know that even a small number of these sick people are taken off the streets even for a year or two makes the world a better place for our children keep up the good work thank you for bringing this kind of sick behaviour to light so that we can procect our children.
To Chris Hansen, we are college students at William Penn University and we love your show. 10 of us get together every tuesday night to watch you catch pedifiles at 7:00, it's what we look forward to every week. We were wondering if we could get some tee-shirts. Keep up the good work!
Chris, I am in constant admiration of your bravery for confronting the dangerous predators face to face. When you stand up for the kids that cannot stand up for themselves, you make every neighborhood in America a little bit safer. I am wondering if Perverted Justice and Dateline have ever been in contact with someone on the internet that stops chatting after the decoy identifies themselves as being underage? Do you encounter any "good samaritans" that offer legitimite advice to the decoy, thinking they are underage teens, to use caution in their internet activity? Keep up the good work!
Do the alledged predators give consent to the broadcast? If so why are some of the faces digitally blocked?
1) On your program tonight there was footage of a predator who like he was barely above 18 himself, if that. I think there should have been some explanation about him and his age. 2) I think you should shed light on the difference in State laws or if federal law is relevant. Is any person 18 or over legal? Or does it matter what the age of the predator is? Would a 50 year old predator and an 18 year old victim be legal? 3) You stated in tonight'a broadcast that women are almost never predators. My comment is numerous female New York City teachers have been arrested for sex with their male students.
yea cudos to chris on this program, but what about the women out there, I really want to see there lives get totaly messed up. and you know the real predators out there are these phishers & hackers, why don't they do a show & expose these malishous guys & put them away for life to let there souls rot in jail. these guys really make the average persons life online a constant headick.why isn't there any control over the site myspace & youtube-the people that invented these sites need to be exposed for everyone to see where they live so people can protest at there front door. you know all this stupid crap on the internet is traced to one pathedick soul & his name is bill gates & he should be held responsible for each & every thing that goes wrong online, because he's the one that opened pandoras box.
I am a young woman currently pregnant with my first baby, a boy. My husband and I have been watching every one of the Dateline NBC-To Catch A Predator stories whenever they're on. After watching the "Behind the Scenes" episode earlier tonight, I just HAD to send you all a note expressing my relief for people like you. It's scary enough bringing a child into this world...but it's people like you, warriors for children, that help to ease my fears. My husband and I were lucky enough to be raised in families that kept close watch on our online activities. Though my child may someday encounter the caliber of person you all devote your lives to stopping, I can rest assured that you're there protecting our children and I'm comforted by that knowledge. Congratulations on all the arrests and convictions you've facilitated. My husband is in law enforcement and his favorite part of the whole show is watching the predators get arrested and knowing that at least one more child will remain unharmed. May God bless you all in your fight for the untainted futures of our children. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Sincerely, Jessica and soon-to-be Caleb
Thank you for your persistance with this series. Although I usually find it too difficult to watch, I am thankful that you continue to catch preditor after preditor. After what my family has been through, I would like to see the world wake up to the prevelance of this deviation and pass some laws that actually protect potential future victims. Please keep doing what you are doing and God bless you for trying to make the world a better place.
Thank you dateline for bringing awareness to this disgusting crime! Now we need to change the laws so that these individuals are not able to get a slap on the wrist when an innocent child had to suffer the trauma for the rest of their life!Keep up the good work!
Dear Chris...first of all I can't thank you enough for what you and perverted justice are doing to help get these creeps off our streets. I am 44 years old and I met a guy on line and we hit if off and started dating. We eventually moved in together and I thought we had a great life together. Imagine my surprise when I found out he had been arrested with 5 felony counts by a sting operation..one felony was attempted aggravated sexual assault of a 13 year old girl. Of course I split from him and as far as I know he has yet to go to trial. He unfortunately was able to hire an attorney after his arrest. I feel very stupid because I let this creep manipulate me and try to convince me he was innocent. (He said he knew the person he was talking with in the chat room was an adult before he showed up to meet her at a fast food restaurant.) Your show tonight really helped me see that these guys are all very sick individuals and what ever sentence they get is too light. (The last time I spoke with him he still thinks he'll be acquitted.) With 5 felonies, one being child porn, yea, right. Keep up the good work..and again, on behalf of all our children...thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm a parent of 4 kids, 3 girls. Because of the risk, I have NEVER allowed my kids on chat rooms or even on the web unless it was for homwework and it required my personal secret login. HOWEVER, my very young teen son took a web class and acidentally typed in licos rather than Lycos when attempting to work on his website. He got a full crotch shot of a nude woman, which then lead to some curiousity clicking. I found out because of a porn virus on my machine. I was devastated as a mother and literally/physically sick as a woman shamed. We have moved on as a family, but I still feel "raped" because innocence can never return. And the worst part is they FORCIBLY ENTERED MY HOME without my consent and STOLE my son's innocence without even a blink from society. Since when is it okay to pimp girls in people's livingrooms? Parent control - sure, but give me SOMETHING to work with! The parental control buzzword is used as an excuse for lack of community responsibility. My child can't enter a liquor store without a valid ID, but sexually explicit materials can be shoved in his face at home without so much as a blink of an eye or condemnation from society! Streakers are arrested for public indecency, but anything goes on the web. I don't want to shield my kids from the whole world, but porn damages kids and creates sick adults! As a parent, I don't know what else to do other than cut the computer resource off to them all together. YOUR SHOW HAS GIVEN ME A HOPE THAT SOMEONE GIVES A RIP OUT THERE. May my tears repay you!
A true service to child saftey. The people you LEAST expect can turn out to be monsters and there are so many more than one might expect. A family member of mine was molested along with 3 of his friends. The man who did it comitted suicide. To catch a predator brings justice for us, because "friendly neighbor" didn't pay for what these 4 boys and families will have to live with forever. In a horrible memory that will scar the past it's a shame this man lives on, but what you do will save so many children and prevent so many scars. Thank you. We would love to see you come to Colorado.
