'Wild Bill' answers some questions

Question: But aren't you giving criminals ideas?
Answer: All these demonstrations are being done in an effort to make you safer  and smarter if you cross paths with a criminal. Wild Bill is not showing you everything he knows... and he's not giving criminals any new ideas. Where do you think Wild Bill got some of these ideas in the first place?

Stone Phillips: One question people may have is whether some of these scenarios that we've seen tonight are just so over-the-top that it's not really a legitimate test of how witnesses would react?
Bill Stanton: Well, to answer your question, no it wasn't over-the-top. Crimes comes in all shapes and sizes and they happen in front of a lot of people in broad daylight. Crime doesn't punch a clock.  The bad guy will take it if he or she sees an opportunity.

Phillips: Time and again we saw witnesses observe you doing something behaving suspiciously and they did nothing. If we see something, what should we do?
Stanton: Be a conduit. Observe. Take a description. Take a license plate. Get on the phone to 911 and take action that way.

Phillips: Okay, what about protecting our property?  What about our cars, what can we do?
Stanton: Layers – the same in the winter time holds true for security. Have a wheel lock.  Put a car alarm. Park in a well lit area with high pedestrian traffic.  Hopefully the bad guy will pass that by and take an easier mark.

Phillips: And what about our homes?
Stanton: Same thing with the home. But make sure you lock that second story window.  Everybody locks their front door, keeps their first floor windows shut. Bad guys have ladders today.

Phillips: One of the most disturbing things we saw tonight  was is how easy it is for someone to lure our children away. What's your best tip for parents?
Stanton: Common sense will rule the day. Role-play with your child.  Do different scenarios.  The advice we were given by our grandparents back when we were kids still holds true today.  Don't listen to strangers. And literally take them through that -- walk them through and do "what if" scenarios.  "If someone came up to, would you do this?" And explain to it to them. Be prepared, not paranoid.

In august of 06' a teenager approached our house knocked on the door and when no one answered he stole a bicycle off the front porch. he didnt know that a 12 year old girl watched him from behind the front door. she called me at work i came right home and called the police. when the police came they said they would enter a report and look around the neighborhood which they did. My father and i drove around the area and caught two kids loading the bicycle into the trunk of a car. we followed them to a house and called police and waited three and a half hours for them to respond. after reports were filed from two different police departments and a call to the deputy cheif we still haven't heard to this day anything about the matter. Mike Mentley Erie,PA.
Dear Bill; I am a retired Police Sergeant who spent 23 years as the supervisor of the Crime Prevention Unit. I believe in your message and would like to assist you in any way that I can. Please let me know how I can help you spread your message? Feel free to contact me via my e-mail. Sgt David L. Green-(retired)
I found it amazing that you are able to this in broad daylight; however what would have happened if it were a black man doing the samething in the same communities?
Bill, While watching your exposure of public apathy I couldn't help but wonder what the response would have been if you did those things as a black man. Would date line be willing to do a segment with the exactly same scenarios but with black man as the perpetrator?
hey bill,i have seen shows like this before, which i like, but they make me mad because i always say to myself, why dont they come to east texas and try this stuff? i may be completely wrong but i really feel we down here would act differently. im not talking about dallas or houston but towns like tyler tx, longview tx, lufkin tx, carthage tx. i am a legal concealed handgun carrier, firefighter, paramedic, and am not afraid to approach odd behavior. im pretty sure im not the only one. thanks for the show nbc. and keep up the predator catching.
What would happen if Wild Bill was an African-American do the same actions? There would absolutely be more calls to the police.
Wild Bill, I am hispanic, Dominican to be correct, but why don't you put one or two hispanic guys to break inside those homes, and you will see how soon the people will call the police.
Is there a camera person visable? There is obviously other people with Bill at the hotel.
Hello Bill, you are 'The Man'! Bill, I've watched you on the Today Show, The Big Idea and countless other news programs. Bill, how can I / someone contact you. I have tried to find your web site, but can't find one. Do you have a web site? Thank you, Robert M. Brooklyn, New York
I teach business law at a local high school. Where can I get a copy of the tape or other materials?
Does it help to have barking dogs in your house to deter burglers?
Hi Bill, I'm a nurse who travels a great deal, recently at the hospital that i currnetly work at a coworker was getting into the elevator in the parking garage and in the elevator there were three men. One of the men pretneded to be ill and the other two men requested that the lady help him which she did at the same time one of the other men was putting his hand into her purse and trying to get her wallet out of her purse. she caught on to what was happening and stopped them. What are some tips for protecting my self in these kind of situations? Any tip would be helpful thanks for the show I really learned a lot.
The question that I have is this. Concerning stranger danger, is there a way to tell our children to be able to tell a real police officer from a fake one. I am a second responder, I have heard of instances where a child would not allow help from a from rescue personal. The times that I can think of is major disasters, ie. Katrina, a tornado or 9/11.
Bill, my wife and I have gotten involved many times, and even when it turns out actual criminal activity is afoot, the police refuse to do much of anything. A few times, they have turned on us, inferring that some how we have done something wrong by bothering to call them. We don't bother to call any longer.
Do you have a video or know of one that will let children see what you have done, and the correct way to act.
Your show tonight really hits home. Around 17 years ago I drove down a very busy four lane highway on my way shopping around 9 am. I thought I saw what looked like a body lying next to the edge of the road on the other side of the highway. I told myself, it must not really be a person, because everyone on that side of the road was driving right by, including trucks. On my way back home almost two hours later, I was right behind an ambulance that stopped next to a police car and the "body". A I drove by, it was obvious to me that it was an elderly man lying there. I can not tell you haw terrible I felt, knowing that I had thought I saw a person lying there almost two hours earlier and that someone finally did respond almost two hours later. Since then, I have never told myself that someone else would do something. ABout 3 or 4 years after this incident, I was the first person to call the fiter station after I drove my a home in our neighborhood that had flames shooting out of eve4ry window in the house.
Hey Bill, I have a different way of keeping theives away from my things, and I don't know if it is a viable option or not. I just drive an old car, don't own anything that anyone would want, and make it obvious to my neighbors who is welcome in my home and when I'll be away. Am I deluding myself or is this something that will help protect me?
Mr. Stanton, I hope you will please address the terrible danger related to children who aren't taught the importance of when to scream and when not to. I've seen children whose behavior is so bad, that they scream and resist when their own parents attempt to corrall them. One time in particular, I even stood near enough to eventually reassure myself that the adult was the parent. The problem, as I see it, is that children should be taught to scream something similar to, "No, No, You're not my parent!" if someone tries to abduct them. BUT, they should also be taught that bad behavior may cause someone to call the police if they act in a suspicious manner. A concerned grandmother
I have my house for sale by a realtor, one afternoon the door bell ran and I heard someone messing with thedoor lockbox so I opened the front door thinking it was just kids playing as they have before. when I opened the door there were two guys and one of them had there foot inside my door step and said we want to see the house, I push the guy out of my way so he would not have the chance to get me in the house and do god knows what. after I did that they ran to there suv which was parked sideways in my drive, because I have a three car garage the driveway is big. I got as much information as I could and called the police. I wanted to know did I do the right thing, My family says I should have not opened the front door, but I did not know who it was.
I noticed alot of people are commenting on the racial aspect, when I still think alot of people wouldn't call the police regardless of the color or background of the person. My house was broken into while I was away for a weekend and when I questioned the neighbors (who all have dogs) if they saw or heard anything, they all said NO!...my hidden survelience camera revealed three black males cleaning out my house and a white woman driving a van. On another note, I was at a nite club when my purse was stolen by a girl who just told the bartender "please hand me my purse (while pointing to my purse!)"..and he did! I call the police whenever I see something weird going on, but sometimes the 911 people act like you are just wasting their time and ask so many questions that by the time the police get there, the event is over! I called 911 one night about a violent fight happening on my street...the police NEVER showed up...but the ambulance did after the man shot his girlfriend dead.
Bill, As a daycare provider, I see the differences in the way that children interact with men and women. I believe this would be a different study if there was a woman interacting with the children or a woman even breaking into the house. I would be interested in seeing another study with a woman in it. I believe more of the children would be willing to go over to a woman, especially girls. Diane
The old lady who came up to "Wild Bill" in the Asbury Park parking lot and said "Yeah right" when he told her that he was just trying to get into his car. She was really no friend to the community, Law Enforcement, or the real owner of the car. She was doing "Wild Bill" a favor by telling him that the cops were being called. Giving him some time to get away from the area and avoid the cops. She might not have been intending to help this crook but in real life she would have.
Hey Bill, interesting stuff but next episode take "Jamal" or "Leroy" out with you and see how different things would turn out.
Can you address walking into your own hotel room while a maid is cleaning it without providing identification? I've done that several times and he/she just lets me in...several times at high-end hotels.
what i saw tonight was interesting, But you were in major cities. what if you tried that in a small town like we live in. on main st i'm sure someone would call the police.
BILL KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK .. KEEP PEOPLE INFORMED ,,, CORY
Bill, My family lives in a small rural town in MO. and my 17 and 13 yr. old boys think they are invisable. Have you done anything with this age group and community? Will you come to ours?
Dateline NBC I just watched you’re break-in story and noticed that your hotel section failed. Only one person did the right thing. Most Americans don’t realize that other countries train there hotel personnel to a standard and we don’t. The only person who did the right thing was either Indian “from India” or a Pakistanian “from Pakistan”. Let’s give credit to those countries and hotel staffers who are trained. And by the same token let Americans know training is important. When you hire off the street you get off the street training “I didn’t see a thing”. Most Americans are afraid to ask for ID’s or proof of ID. When you go pick-up drugs at a pharmacy or buy items with a credit card. Not enough people ask for proof of who you are. They don’t care if you are entitled to pick-up the drugs or if you are the person who owns the credit card as long as they don’t get involved. We are a society that is open to theft or attack because we don’t want to get involved or it’s not my problem. Murl Tackett
Most of the people in my neighborhood are retired. I could not believe what I saw, where I live if the FedEx truck pulls up more than twice in an hour my neighbors call the police. When we moved in they recommended that we purchase a small video camera.
First I want to thank the Dateline news for showing this program. I also would like to say that it was very educational and informing. My main comment is if that was me an African American I wouldnt of have gotten that far on breaking into the car, going into the gated community, getting into the hotel room, and also the "stranger Danger", none of that wouldnt of happen because I am black. People would have called 911 when I first broke the window, I wouldnt of have gotten that far into the gated community even if I owned a house in that community. Same with the children situation, I wouldnt of have gotten that close to the children because people look at blacks as automatic criminals. Try everything you did with "Wild bill" instead have a black person do it and see how far they come!!!!
Regarding todays show on calling the police. I lived in Tusscon,AZ for 3 months. During that time, my truck was vandalized and the stereo and cd's were taken, the police would not come out but did send me a letter for insurance purposes. Then I was physically attacked in a parking lot, and police said they might come but did not. I left town and learned not to bother the police with my minor life's problems. I am an immigrant waiting to become an apporoved citizen and sometimes I wonder why? Thanks for listening.
I watched your break in show and was please that when some one broke into my house which was undergoing renovation my neighbors called the police. Even though it was the third time in less than a year they had responded to a break in at that address, when they confronted the person inside my house they just let him go. They told the neighbor it was because I didn't have a no trespassing sign. They even left my house unlocked. I heard about this from my neighbor, but when I called the police they said they didn't know what I was talking about. I got mad and told the guy to find out what happened. He checked with dispatch and found the call from my neighbor but the officer who responded hadn't write a report. I asked him to find out why -but never heard back form them. I'm a single mom with a drop dead gorgous teenage daughter - couple your report on neighbor apathy with the police not doing anything (even writing up a report) and where am I left?
Hi Bill, My daughter was one of the three girls featured on your show tonight. I have to say, going through the experience and watching my daughter from a distance being approached by a stranger was unsettling. I know I've taught her the right things to do, but I have to admit, I was worried that the puppy may override any lessons taught. We were extremely proud when she and her friends decided to walk away from you, even though you had the puppy! I work in a local school, and I wonder if you have a video about kid safety. I am sure the school system would love to have you come and show the video not only to the younger children, but also to the upper grades, especially in light of recent events having to do with young teenage boys being abducted from a bus stop.
I thought the show was very eductional to a lot of people in this country. All of us should be good samaritans. But I do think, Bill, that you may be looking at it the wrong way on why people don't call 911. There were many times where I went out of my way to help others or just do the right thing. I was raised that way. For some reason I get wrongfully accused of something by people or the police. I received more strife and anguish for getting involved in these situations. My parents even told me to forget what we taught you, just don't get involved and look the other way. I think too many people want to sue you, or complain how you helped them, or the police are corrupt some how. I don't have enough space on here to tell you all my stories, but I don't blame poeple for not wanting to get involved.
OK keeping it real ... I was born and raised in NYC, no better learning place ... it is often better for most to stay back from a situation than to endanger themselves. I can take care of myself, yet would first think that a gun or knife might be involved. Using a firm voice and have your cell phone ready to go and leave yourself an exit. Here is the problem police responce time is usually too long to give you any help. Here is a real life example ... not long after 9/11; I live in a million dollar and up area, my neighbors alarm went off and I went over to check it out ... three black males were going down the street with some hand bills .... now, I know my friends house and the alarm does not go off by putting a flyer on the door ... watching as they went donw the street ... they looked in every car and checkout to see if doors were open ... I call 911 and itis taking some time ... its a long street that is an island ... so I took my cell and drove to a narrow bridge and stalled it with the hood up acted dumb until the police finally came .. they gave me a rash of crap, did not question the individuals but waved them by .. did not even ask for id ......... a while later I recieved a call at my home from the friendly police, in a voice with a gun at my head letting me know, in no uncertain way to forget everything that had happened ....... now they are not going to cramp my lifestyle and I will always be there to help ...... how would an average person respond ????????? As you can understand I do not want my name to appear anywhere, I have a good understanding of who the most dangerous people can be unfortunatly ..... al
Good work, but just a start....A lot more needs to be done regarding education, and the responsibilities of every American child and adult in every town, city and also in the rural areas in the USA.
Nice job Bill but I disagree with the reasons the shrink came up with on why people don't call. Its because they are afraid of litigation, not apathy. We are a lawsuit oriented country and what is worse is that even the police are stepping back for fear of complaints, lawsuit or prosecution. Your dead right, we are in deep poop if we don't wake up soon.
Hi Rene Manzueta-- I am Hispanic actually. My mom is Puerto Rican. As I said, crime comes in all shapes and sizes, and the point of the demonstrations was to show how people have to be vigilant -- regardless of stereotypes.
This is a good example of profiling that americans are a little hesitant to admit. The other bloggers are correct when they say any other race and it would have been different, but it's not just race-age is a factor as well. No offense, but alot younger and they would have been calling on you too. Who wants to mess with a veteran thief? The police aren't going to back you up or file a report. You'll be lucky if they even show up. Everyone knows what the real problem is. No one in authority wants to help us little people. I hope no one thinks the president is the only one ignoring us.
I LOVE IT!!! I am serious that I have been thinking of a way to do this forever!! I am so glad that someone has used their power and found a way to show people that we need to be more alert and speak out when we see something that is not right - and educate people regarding other situations I would LOVE to help you spread your message in Seattle WA!!! Please contact me!!
To A. DeHaven, Roanoke VA who asked whether dogs help in home security -- yes and no. I wouldn't recommend dogs as the only layer of security. I once managed to "break into" a house with a dog, and walked out WITH the dog. Use other preventative measures too -- security alarms, and of course locking doors and windows.
Bill, I find your expose' fascinating, but, I would be curious to know what would the results be if you tried the same experiment in the same locations dressed the same way with a person of another skin color or younger age?
Your story missed the problem. Try calling the policy to report a crime. I did. I was asked by the Sacramento Sheriff Department dispatching supervisor, "What do you expect us to do about it?" They never responded
At least in my suburban city, calling the police for a burglary in progress is a waste of time. If or when you finally do get through to a dispatcher (it is not a dispatcher who answers, you have to have your call screened and forwarded) it will probably take hours for the police to get there. And you are stuck at the crime scene waiting for them. Sadly, there are just aren't enough police to bother with crimes against property. At least that's what they told me.
It really seems like you are exposing how incredibly easy it is to get away with ripping people off. While it is great to raise awareness about people should following their instincts and get involved when something doesn't look right there has got to be a better way. This is going to insprie a lot of petty criminals to step it up.
It looks like your trying to show how slick of a talker you are. Also I think your trying to show your masculinity. Of course people arent ganna be rude or question a slick talking buff guy. Do you think you look like a guy who is going to be on worlds dumbest criminals. or do you like a confident wealthy mr. large with a temper breaking into vehicles. It looks more like showing of roid rage than a criminal who would be that dumb.
I believe that people dont call the police because the police are simply too busy to respond to things like that. We called 911 twice, the first time a soda machine was being vandalized and after getting transfered to 3 different agencies (city, county, state) an officer finally arrived about 20 minutes later. The 2nd, a man was injured by a moving car with life threatening injuries it took the ambulance 15 minutes to respond, from less than 2 miles away. It is sad, but when nobody gets a response you wonder why you should bother.
While I agree we all need to be more vigilant, I also think most people aren't willing to risk getting involved because of the potential hassle or repercussions. How far is far enough with, say, the burglars posing as contractors: trying to contact the neighbor, asking to see a work order, calling the police and asking them to detain the alleged contractors until their identities can be confirmed? What's the best way to balance vigilance without becoming paranoid? One other question: what are good anti-burglary tips for apartment dwellers who can't install better locks, burglar alarms, etc.?
Bill, I am now watching your message you are giving people on Dateline right now and I think this is a AWSOME show to tell people just how blind they are to what is happening around them. Now if I were one of those people on the street or in the neighborhood seeing such thing happen I would be on the phone to call 911 in a second. know your doing a GREAT JOB to let people see just how STUPID they really are/if if it were happening to them they would truly wish someone would step up and call it in. I would no matter what! I have gone under cover for friends of mine in different situations just to protect them in the long run and it has paid off. They called me the president of the Under Cover Women's Infiltration Team . I am one to say if I See something going on that isn't right then it is My Business, because I now there are to many shallow people out there that think If it's not happening to Me its not My business. So if your ever into meeting someone who see things the way You Do I'd Love to meet you and go on one of your under cover missions just to prove a woman doing just what you showed could happen To You to the public. I would be honored to to just be a part of that, showing it's not just men but women too that can do such acts that you have shown on this Dateline Program. Woman can be part of the sick, planned out plot to kidnapp childern as men.We just do hear of it as much as men or pedafilers do this. Crimes do come in ways you'd never think of happening. Never under estimate someone how Wants what You Have. They Can and Will get it before you Know it. So To All those Out There Keep Your Eyes WIDE OPEN. You could be Next. Wild Bill Your No. 1 in My Book. Keep up the Great Work. I'm one Your Team. Ellen Parkinson . elleycruiser@comcast.net. Please let me know if you got my message. Portland Oregon.
I applaud your expose, but it is flawed by the commentary of the so called red-headed expert who's comment alluded to the biased female perception that boys were not wanting to expose cowardise. It has been proven that girls have the flight syndrome in enabled into them through G-d or evolution if you will, and that boys do not, males have the hunter syndrome. Hence the close encounter with you at the rear of the car. I have worked in the telecom sector for over 26 years in the field and I will tell you that the whites are comfortable with solid looking Hispanics that look strong and talk well with them enternig into their house and other locations as compared to gang-banger types and black males of all types in their neighborhoods. I'm open for discussion at anytime.
