Britney, Anna Nicole, our obsessions-- what's the lesson here?

This week, two strange soap operas attracted an audience of millions. On TV, on the Internet, and in print, the sagas played out. And depending on how you see all this, you can choose your own storyline -- women gone wrong, women done wrong, or girls gone wild.

Singer Britney Spears, more than accustomed to headlines for her sexy onstage persona, found her image publicly deep-fried for behavior that could only be described as very troubling. She took a one-day trip to a drug and alcohol dependency center, then she stopped off at an L.A. salon and, seemingly on a whim, she shaved her head. Then, that same evening, she made a pit stop for a couple of tattoos, followed by another spin through the revolving door of rehab after her ex- threatened to take her to court over the kids.

For Harvey Levin of TMZ.com, the Internet encyclopedia of celebrities-in-crisis, Britney needs help. “Her family knows she needs help.  And the world knows she needs help.  And you know what?  She probably knows she needs help too.”

Anna Nicole Smith needed help as well, but she either didn't get it, didn't want it, got too much of it... or got it from the wrong people. That might be the curse of being beautiful, vulnerable, and constantly on the verge of being hugely wealthy. The result was that long, bizarre hearing we all saw unfold in a Florida courtroom.

The model and actress didn't have much of a career, but it wasn't her body of work that was being litigated -- it was her body, the one that made her so famous.

And 13 days after Anna Nicole Smith's death, the local medical examiner warned she was literally decomposing as her companion, her mother, and her ex-boyfriend argued about what would be done with her. It was a hearing awash in both theater and regret with Smith's estranged mother on the stand remembering her daughter's addictions.

She tried taking her daughter to the Betty Ford center. But the former Playmate of the Year didn't last in rehab.

And so far, the former Mouseketeer seems at best ambivalent.

We talked to author and talk-radio host Dr. Drew Pinsky, an expert on addiction and the nexus between public fame and personal agony.

“People that are driven to be a celebrity, by definition, have very high incidence of what we call, ‘cluster-B personality problems,’ particularly narcissism,” says Pinsky.  “Lots of trauma in childhood, lots of substance and alcohol use.  This predicts, guarantees more addiction and more chaos in their relationships.”

So is the common theme here drugs or alcohol? Or maybe fame-- living with it and trying to hold onto it? And don't forget money. Men are lining up to claim the paternity of Smith's infant daughter who may be soon a millionaire.  Britney Spears' hair is for sale on the Internet. It's all enough to make you want to turn your head away...or at least, to tell people you do.

There's a kind of hypocrisy in this country, isn't there?  I mean, people will tell you, "Oh, I can't believe you spend so much of your time following Britney around."  And then the minute there's a story, they want to know about it.  They're clicking on TMZ.  And they're buying the latest magazine.

For Levin, it’s not unlike watching accidents. “It’s the same principle.”

More of my conversation with Harvey Levin:

Mankiewicz: But what's our responsibility here, yours and mine?  We both, to some extent, make our living covering these people, and fueling this interest.

Levin: I mean, I don't apologize for covering it. These are celebrities who court publicity.  They want their lives covered. It's a door they opened. I mean, you can't say to me, "I open the door but I'm having a bad hair day, so this door gets shut today."

And lately, for a young woman who only a couple of years ago was at the top of her game, it's been one long bad hair day.

Levin: I think she is viewed as a dark figure, which she never was before -- a troubled person. She's not this darling anymore.  I mean, honestly, I think it's pretty amazing that Kevin Federline looks like the stable one. These women are not our royalty. They lead lives few would envy.  It turns out that when that door to fame opens, it sometimes opens to a lot of other things as well.

Mankiewicz: It was different when the studios ran Hollywood.

Levin: Totally.  Totally different.

Mankiewicz: Certain things just didn't get reported.

Levin: Most things didn't get reported.  Hollywood looked like the perfect place, where people had the perfect marriage, the perfect looks, the perfect children, and nobody ever had a substance abuse problem.  And nobody committed a crime.  And everybody was happy, happy, happy.

Now, we get everything we always wanted to know...and so much more. And all of it's a sad, painful, and sometimes embarrassing lesson about our stars, ourselves, and the vapor trail of celebrity.

how could you put Anna and Britney in the same story! Britney does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence.
I can't believe that the courts have the right to decide where someone is going to be buried.  Didn't she make her point clear when she bought the plot next to her son Daniel?  Her mother should have lost control of Anna's life at the age of 21.
Howard Stern is a lawyer, didn't he think to have her update a will, knowing how depressed she was?  Where was he to protect the one he loves interest?
Anna wanted to be buried next to Daniel and bought a plot next to him, why can't her mom respect that?  She should be buried already!
Anna Nicole Smith never did anything beyond being a celebrity, in death she does not deserve wall to wall coverage day after day.  In both cases we have women who appear to have had serious mental issues, the problem is that if you have one your brain is playing tricks on you.  Anyone who says well get help, it is not that easy and history is loaded with the end of lives that have had to deal with it or a mental condition.
It's not "us" who have the obsession with these celebrities.  It's the media and papparazi who think we do.  Frankly, I have other things to worry about than whether or not Ms. Spears has shaved her head or where Ms. Smith will be buried. Get a life, people!!!
the trial to determine where Anna was to be buried was a travesty...the judge was so phony and such a friend of Howard and it was totally a travesty of justice..Please some one namely Anna's mother file it in court that the judge should not have had this case being a friend of Sterns , conflict of interest. so so sad.
I agree with Beth (St. Paul). Let's extend that understanding to the cash nexus which the papparazi chase. The "ambulance chasers" of the media do not have our interests at heart. Rather, they are the tail trying to wag the dog because they want to get to the feeding trough first. The pity is this: the celebrities who embrace these waggers are devoured by them in the end.
I believe that the statement quoted by Stern about Anna Nicole saying she "wanted to be buried with Daniel" was figurative at the time of the Daniel's funeral rather than a literal statement made about the future.  Many times when a loved one dies people say they want to die and be buried with them right then because the grief is so unbearable. Also, if Stern is such a sharp attorney, why didn't he draw up a new will immediately after the baby's birth and Daniel's death.  He's had plenty of time and he is supposed to have been protecting Anna Nicole and her assets.  Hmmmm.
I think that this "Judge" could have a shot in Saturday Night Live.., don't u think ?
Or his own reality show: "No judge in this Circus!
I wish you would stop portraying methadone in such a bad light.

Methadone is a TREATMENT PROGRAM that is vital for people that are serious about stopping drug dependency.   Yes, primarily addicts use it and Yes, it is sometimes abused.  But so is the majority of other Perscribed medications (pills).   The vast majority of people on the program do not abuse it and many have said that it has saved thier lives.

For those people who are SERIOUS about stopping drug use it is a very effective means for accomplishing thier goal.  By you singeling out one person who may or may not have abused this drug, you will accomplish nothing but shedding a bad light on it and making it more difficult for people to have access to this treatment.  What you should be focusing on is the NEW DRUG EPIDEMIC  that has swept the nations suburbs. It includes both abusing perscription pills and the exponential increase in Herion use.   I don't know how or why it has happened, but currently Herion is no longer in the gutter but is the upscale, new fad.  Last week I went to an classy resturant in a very good part of town and at least half of the wait staff had tract marks.  And these were not trashy looking people, they were the sons & daughters of white collar parents.  Whats worse is that Herion use is so common that these young adults obviously felt no shame in keeping their tract marks exposed (short sleved shirts).   In the very near future our society will have a great demand for Methondone Treatment Centers to treat our current 18-24 year olds.  Also note that Methadone is used for all sorts of drug dependence including Pain Pill (opiates).

You also need to do your reasearch concerning Methadone and Preganancy.  It is considered safe to use during pregnancy if perscribed and monitored by a qualified doctor to coincide with a treatment program.  If a woman started using Methadone before conception she must stay on it or else face an almost certain miscarriage.   What would you rather have; a pregnant woman buying street drugs to avoid withdraw or a pregnant woman realizing she has a problem and is seeking treatment?

I hope you can understand that like it or not, when addicts decide to stop using drugs and straighten up thier lives, they need treatment centers availiable to them.

S.M.
Beth, why don't you get a life?! You seem pretty hypocritical.
travesty... did watch clueless recently?
These past couple of weeks many more thousands and thousands of soilders have died because of the war in Iraq, but we have never heard about them, we have never heard about what they had to leave behind weither it may be a wife, husband, kids, we never heard about some the amazing things they did. So I ask everyone this why is it Britney Spears, and Anna Nicole Smith have had millions of storeis written about them and there are main worry in the world, and we have stoped thinking of the millions of soilders that are dieing in Irag, because of that idiot who put them there?

so how about we leave Britney Spears alone so she can get well!!
and we leave Anna Nicole Simths Death alone, and we start thinking about ways to help are world, because it's falling apart
I wish people could be more sensitive to a person private life. It seems to me that nobody cares about emphatize with people crisis. Also, it seems that nobody is doing analytical thinking or are educated enough to know when a women experience a crisis and how she is reacting for what did happne in her life. I do. In the case of Anna Nicole Smith, I am positive that she wants to be doing what she most like to do --exposure her body and be noticed. In the end she has to deal with her conscious that she did not have the skills to understand. Howerve4, Anna Nicole Smith seems to end the way she most want to be FAMOUS and important. One think that is good to remember she shaped her life the way she design it! In most case people with such desire that focus on self need to learn about the law that guides all of us in the life cicle. So be it!

Regarding Britney Spears, I think that she is experience a tremendous conflict in her marriage. And nobody really shown care for her behavior. All what people are doing is criticizing her without analyze or taking into consideration her emotional stage. I am predicting that she has been experience a shock. This shock did transformed her behavior. The irony of all of this is that her ex is seing like the good guy. Yeah! the so called expert is judging her without have treat her. Also, he is violating the code of ethics. I wish he kept his mouth closed and did not make the situation worse. Also, he is not measure what the uneducated public is putting in their mind. Also, I know for fact all the dangerous mind will twist all what this expert is talking about and make things bad for others. How can I make sure these expert become more sensitive to people issues and respect their privacy.

The common theme: they're human. Served up as 'news'. Their lives don't carry lessons for anyone but themselves. People pay attention to what the media force-feed them. Stories like this one were unthinkable before CNN and Headline News made the filling up of broad/cable/narrowcast time more important than the content of what is presented. Even MSNBC's front page has an awful lot of entertainment fluff links on it. I just will not click on them, because I go to MSNBC for news; living my own life, with people who interact with me, takes all of my time. More folks ought to try it...media stars will interest them less and less.
Anna Nicole Smith has put a direct spotlight on ourselves. We all have some sort of addictions. Everybody does, and some are harmless and some are deadly.
Marilyn Monroe died the very same way, and Anna Nicole was a life long obsessive Marilyn Monroe lover. She already tried to check out in 1993, while staying at Monroe's Brentwood home.
Speaking about "osessions," unfortunately anything can lead to it, turn into addiction. Try to take your kid off the cellphone, you might not be able to...
I also agree with other commenters, that Anna Nicole's mom should stay out of this. The ideal, to comfort everybody: Anna Nicole and her son should be moved to Westwood, where Marilyn Monroe is resting. I know a person, who has three crypts next to each other, and close by at Marilyn's.
If Mr. Howard K. Stern really has a heart, he is taking care of this, soon. Anna Nicole wanted to be close to Marilyn Monroe. That has been many times stated in court, as we all know.
Her wish should be granted.
Celebrities live for the spotlight.  No one exemplified this more than Anna Nicole Smith, a woman of few but obvious talents.  There's a saying - and it exists for a reason - "there's no such thing as bad publicity."  Give Britney a few months and she'll be everywhere cashing in on her "recovery".  And, people will watch.
Was the judge in the Anna Nicole Smith case trying to be "discovered" as a comedian or indeed a "dramatic actor" because he knew he was on T.V.?  That's the only answer I can think of for not only the unprofessional way he handled himself but the disrespect to the deceased he displayed.  Our country should be so embarrassed that we allow someone like this seemingly uneducated man hold such a high position.  In my opinion, he made a mockery of our judicial system and should step down as a judge and go back to being a taxi driver.
It would make a huge difference in the world if the media could consider to bring to the views a better side of anyone story that may contribute to enhance a person's lives. BUT I am guessing that this not going to happen. There are so many stories that these reporters should be interest and use more creativity to benefit from it. Howerver, I am sure that in the era of information age is surprising to see how the brain is operating. It seems to me that people's mind is speeding and spinning and seems to be lost in a holocausting. We need to understand that we are part of the same pool and we must care because one's action will be affecting everyone. Think about it or thought to consider!!!!
They are both bottle blondes, attention seekers, depressed, without girlfriends, obsessed with themselves, drug and alcohol users, don't know how to take care of their children, make poor choices in men...should I go on?
Who cares? I'm brown, lets put some moral women like Salma Hayek in the news instead of these whores.
Amen, Jill from Fort Worth! Get Britney some help and FAST for the sake of her babies and let Anna rest in peace for the sake of us all...the time is ticking on their 15 minutes!  Thank GOD for my normal boring life!
Yeah Beth, for someome who tells us to get a life, what are you doing posting comments in this section??Why are you at this particular spot?
I resent being part of the "we" that are obsessed with celebrities gone wrong. Count me in as one of those who grabs the remote as soon as I see pathetic pictures of pathetic publicity-seeking blondes. It's not ME who is obsessed - it's you, the media. MSNBC, NBC, ABC, and FOX ran loops of the same footage of poor Ms. Smith. Since I gave up cable news 5 years ago, the only reason I witnessed such an asinine waste of so-called "news" was I was at the gym on the treadmill. I watched another TV instead. DO NOT continue to call yourselves a news outlet. Over and over, to the point of nausea, you put footage of these troubled people who are hounded day and night by the paparazzi and then call "us" obsessed. If it's female, blonde, and troubled, footage is run on a continual loop. The news media has gone terribly wrong.
This is such a terrible mess regarding the death of Anna Nicole Smith.  Her poor little baby deserves better.  It's doubtful that any of the people involved can really be trusted.  They all have dollar signs in their eyes.  It is quite clear that Anna wanted to be buried next to her son in the Bahamas.  Anna clearly did not want her mother involved with her or her children, in life or in death.  At this point, why is this woman allowed to participate in these decisions?  Please let her daughter be buried as soon as possible.  If Howard Stern really believed he was the baby's father he would have the DNA test done.  He does truly seem to love Dannielynn.  It appears that Larry Birkhead is most likely the father.  For whatever reason, Anna Nicole went to great lengths to prevent DNA tests to prove paternity.  I don't know the outcome of this terrible soap opera but my prayers are with little Dannielynn.

The real question here is why is the MEDIA constantly covering these 2 women?  There is only an audience for this coverage because that is all you all (media) are reporting on and writing about.  It's not the public asking for coverage, it's the media narrowmindedness in thinking that's what we all want to see and read about...I've never been so disgusted!
"Nik. Maryland" Your comment reflects your mentality. Your intellectual poverty is noted, and mocked.
Anna Nickole was a money making machine for H. Stern.  She was onto something about the killing of her son and H. Stern finished her off just like he finished her son off.  I hope that Anna's daughter is not going to be finished off too. oh yes he has to keap her alive so that he can keep his expensive lifestyle remember all his focus was on Anna that was the only way he made money.
Their our more desevering stories out there rather than these two blonde idots! Stories about people who have died recently & actually did something here on earth & left their mark.
"Our obsession with stars gone wild"....hardly!!!.  I believe most people will agree that it is the media who is obsessed!!! They need to create a feeding frenzie in order to sell news paper ads or online ads....simple as that.  Most people out in the real world could give a rats ass what these pampered fools do day to day.  I just tune out when ever the media thinks they're going to ram more of this useless drivel down my throat.
There is something pathetic and in its own way narcissistic about celebrity journalists agonizing over their role in all this.  The self-justification substitutes for what should be a serious discussion of the place of celebrity in our culture.  But of course then these journalists would have to come to terms with their own narcissism.
Howard K. Stern was no more than a leech stuck to Anna's side. He gleamed in Anna Nicole's publicity, lifestyle and enjoyed all of the perks that came along with it. I believe in my heart that he had a hand in the events that have happened in the recent months. It is a tragegy that this has happened to her and her son, I only hope Dannielynn gets true justice in bonding with her real father and not Howard!!!
How about honoring Anna Nicoles wishes:
1.  Buried with son in Bahamas.
2.  Keeping child in Bahamas with her father, Howard Stern.
3.  Clearly Anna wanted Stern to be the father.
Biology does not a father make anyway.  Birkhead is about money.  He is so fake, but not as much as Anna's pathetic mother.  Has she no shame to try to get something now, or may I same again.  Who's paying her for her lawyers and trip?
I think all involved have money signs in their eyes. Anna should be buried next to her son as this was her wishes. As for the father, Howard should take a dna test, so we can put this to an end about who is the biological father. I believe that Howard had alot of influence over Anna Nicole's decisions and kept her isolated from her family and anyone he didn't think she should have around. I pray for little Danielynn. Anna may you and your son rest in peace.
What about Anna Nicole's wishes? Howard is the one that made all of them for her, she was on alot of prescription medications and probably could not think clearly for herself most of the time. She probably didn't realize half of the things she agreed to. This is just my opinion.
To the ones say get a life for being obsessed, they should talk. That's why they were reading this discussion to begin with. As to why we are obsessed, why not? It's nice to see famous people go through some hardship. We commoners love to see wealthy people mess up in their lives and smile. As for the soapbox, Anna Nicole, thats all on her. She lived a sinful life in money and deceit and thats how it ends in money and deceit. I think her body rotting faster than James Brown says it all. Bury these people and move on, there dead, were not. By the way I also read my local neighborhood paper's crime section. So its not just famous people. I just like gossip, and think to myself  better them then me. Also what I would do in these situations. Or think you got it worse? So alot of this is good education of what NOT to do. Stay focused and make right decisions in life.
Were all just nosy people that like to see how things turn out. The same way we rush to see what the flashing lights are all about. Its human nature. But please bury the bodies, James Brown, Anna Nicole...already. By the way. There is one photo shot they keep showing us of Anna Nicole Smith, long hair, Howard Stern in the the background, the one after her son died and she hopped in that limo. I would swear she looks like Nicole Brown Smith the one OJ killed. Think about it "Nicole" and "Smith" and James "Brown".
And there both not buried...and Howard Stern the dj made fun of her on his show. And now the lawyer howard  stern is laughing to the bank....this is not funny!!!!
This is Bizarrree!!!! There is a connection!!! And then Brittny she is checking to rehab and she Anna Nicole never lasted and both of these women are trailor trash states. You can take the people out of the trailor trash, ghetto, but you cant take the trailor trash, ghetto out of the people
So much confusion and discussion and debate is being brought into question all concerning Anna Nicole's burial and HER wishes...
1. Yes she should be buried. She is (was) a human being with flesh and bloos which is now, frankly, rotting. She bought a plot in the bahamas next to her son, and that is where she should be buried...
2. Concerning the child...perhaps Anna wished her child to stay with Howard Stern...this is speculation, backed with no support coming from Anna Nicole's actions in the past. The child is just that, an infant child. She should not be subjected to a lifestyle not fit for her in which to be raised. This same scenario/position holds true to the Britney Spears case. Her SHOULD be the focus point to the entire cover story, however it unfortunately is not. The main topic is that of her new hair-cut and her obvious descent in the public's eye. The court, in both cases, should definately look into this particular situation because it directly inpacts the future of another human being. If place with the wrong person, this child could grow up to be mentally troubled, and possibly a threat to society...
3. Reguarding the public's obsession with the media's STARS...I would like to completely agree with what Mark from Illinois had to say, it is obvious we are ALL completely obsessed due to the simple fact that we are wasting our precious time reading this discussion and commenting on the topics proposed, when we could be doing something much more beneficial to ourselves and our society.

If we (being predominately Americans) took as much of our time discussing major world health/war problems, as we do discussing celebrities and their new harcuts, many of the issues in the world could be resolved. Granted many of the wounds inflicted onto countries from opposing countries are quite deep, many of the small issues would and could be resolved if we simple applied as much effort to world peace as we do to celebrity lifestyles.
For those who say it is the media that is obsessed, I suggest you take a look around you.  If the public wasn't out there to lap up every morsel the media is willing to serve up, the frenzy wouldn't exist.  If the pubic demand for information wasn't there, the media would be wasting their time -- it's a matter of supply and demand.

Face it, we live in a celebrity obsessed society where some of us seem more interested in what Britney is doing than what's going on with our friends and family.  A sad state of affairs, that's for sure.

And before we start asking why someone like Anna Nicole has become such a big celebrity, when (as some have said) she's hasn't really done anything of consequence, perhaps we should ask what kind of society do we have that glorifies people merely for being notorious or rich?
I have had a "train-wreck" reaction to these stories.  Though they are sad and terrible, I can't ignore them and am obviously curious.  What I do want to say is PEOPLE, LEARN HOW TO SPELL.  The posts on here are just horrible.  Do you have a high school education?  Do you use spell check?  What is the deal with the ridiculously horrible grammar and spelling???  Who are you to be talking smack about others when it doesn't appear that you even finished high school?
just like 2pac said in one of his songs. The media on you til you are dead!!!
I clicked through this story just to leave a comment. Which came first: America's obsession with immature twits or the media's? I know several people have made the statement "The media wouldn't cover it if people didn't read it" but when fully 30% of the headlines on a site are about one story, you're bound to get a higher rate of readers. Eventually people who are more interested in news will give in and read the not-news. If reporters put a tenth of the effort into making stories that matter accessible to readers, I'm willing to bet there would be a higher rate of people reading real news.
Nobody in this case comes to court with clean hands. Nobody is concentrating on what is best for the children involved.

How about this.

Find a good couple with a decent lifestyle that are wanting to adopt the child.

Don't inform the foster parents of the childs true identity.

Place all monies concerned in a trust fund. Unable to be drawn from until the child reaches the age of maturity necessary to protect themself from the money grabbers lurking all around them.
I love Britney's short hair.  It challenges society.  Too many American women grow their hair long and flowing to please their boyfriends and husbands.  Britney is starting a new trend, I hope.
IF ANY OF THESE SO CALLED FAMILY, EX'S, MOTHERS, HUSBANDS,BABY'S DADDY'S OF ANNA CARED ANYTHING FOR HER AND THE WELL BEING OF THIS CHILD THEY WOULD JUST CALL THIS CRAP OFF AND GET ON WITH THE FUNERAL THIS IS ENOUGH ALL READY! SOME PEOPLE WHO TRULEY CARE FOR ANNA MIGHT WANT TO SAY THEIR GOODBYES WHILE SHE STILL LOOKS LIKE ANNA.AND ONE DAY DANNY WILL SEE ALL OF THIS AND BE ABLE TO MAKE HER OWN JUDGEMENT AND BOY THIS IS GOING TO HAVE LASTING EFFECTS ON THIS LITTLE GIRL. SHE WILL WONDER IF ANY ONE REALY LOVES HER FOR HER AND WHAT KIND OF FAMILY DOES THIS DURING MOURNING AND PREPERATION FOR A FUNERAL. THEY JUST WANT MORE MONEY MORE NOTEORIETY WHILE THEY CAN GET IT, CAUSE WITH OUT ANNA THEY ALL HAVE NOTHING EXCEPT WHAT THEY CAN KEEP GETTING UNTIL SHE IS IN THE GROUND ,THEN THEY WILL DO WHATEVER TO THIS LITTLE DANNY LYNN TO EARN THEIR INCOME. GOD REST YOUR SOUL ANNA AND BLESS THIS LITTLE ANGEL THAT'S LEFT TO DEAL WITH THIS ATROSITY!
OK. So you think we are addicted to the media circus that is all Celebrities lives? And that we are to blame because we crave this as much as the media makers themselves. How about this for a change, why did we really start watching these shows and caring about all of this. Because when John F Kennedy dies everyone wanted answers. When Elvis died everyone had a theory as to why.  And so the media ran with it and now everytime a celeb does something stupid, something embarrassing, or dies, they think it should be front page news.  How about you try for one week putting all celebrities on the back page and only talk about real issues on the news.  We would have educated children and adults finally understanding why we are at war in Iraq and why Libby is on trial and maybe Emeril can show us a great recipe or Discovery channel can explain how after all these years we no longer consider Mars a planet because they think its to small.  Well, we all know this would never happen because the economy would fall into a decline. Tabloids would go bankrupt, movie and television ratings would drop and actors and actresses would be off the A list and just be normal people.  I say WONDERFUL, the rest of TV land says no way, I want my MTV....
To the person who felt the soldiers in Iraq aren't getting the media attention because of Anna Nicole or the people obsessed with them...
maybe a question to ask is why people in general from other countries don't obssess over their celebrities or the private and intimate lives of their leaders?  Why is the U.S. over in Iraq when its got plenty of its own problems to take care of?  yes, its quite ridiculous to spend time rehashing the private lives of a celebrity.  Whoever said that the celebrity is to blame because they opened the door to the spolight is part of the problem.  There are plenty of celebrities who lead quiet lives...the media, papparazzi to blame...it is their job to invoke the intrusion.  and yes, sometimes one can only be a celebrity if their private lives become public.  Its an american obession to get celebrity status and an american obession to poke at those that fall from it.
Isn't the american public's curiosity and need to judge, tar and feather so to speak telling?  Why does the Jerry Springer show exist?  Because there is a need, however destructive.  Maybe the U.S. should think about its maturity level in comparison to the world and focus on
the result of its biggest commodity, Hollywood.  Yes, Hollywood pales
in comparison to a war, but it was the U.S's decision to go to war.  And death and destruction are part of that.  My concern is why doesn't the U.S. start taking care of its own.  I am fascinated by the anna nicole story because I'm a truth seeker, understand why people do the things they do, to understand myself.
Instead of poking fun at the obsurdity of the fall of a celebrity..Britney, Anna...why not take it seriously as a country and see how it is indeed a refelection of our own making.  I'm sick to death of the derogatory comments about celebrities we actually know nothing about, except what we are told through the media as if that is any indication of the truth.  Britney shaves her head, so what!  People make nasty remarks about celebrities only to feel good about themselves.  The good thing is that it exposes the average joe and his
questionable outlook and lack of conciousness.  People scare me with comments about Anna, calling her a crack whore....whatever that woman did or endured or needed to do to exist however sad, is not for me to judge.  There are alot of people in the U.S. struggling without emotional and financial support, without families or someone to turn to.  America is the land of oppourtunity but not for all, how can that be changed?
We are definitely responsible, even moreso than the journalists, for this ridiculous news coverage of all celebrities.

The bottom line is, if no one bought the magazines, if no one watched the gossip shows, if no one clicked on the story links... then there would be no tabloids and gossip shows and story links.

Every single one of us that hopped into this article, and made a comment, contributes to the media coverage.

So every single person in this comment section who claims, "Gosh people, get a life, who cares?" obviously you do, because you clicked on the story link.

I'm guilty of it, even though it irritates the daylights out of me that I'm guilty of it!

I think that Britney needs help, and I think Anna Nicole needs to be buried.  I think Dannielynn needs to live with her biological father, if he wants her.  Someone above said "Biology does not a parent make" (or something to that effect).  Yes, that is true, but if that biological parent is suitable and willing, there is absolutely no substitute.
