7:54 p.m.
The online watchdog group Perverted Justice had worked before with the Murphy, Texas police Department to catch potential predators before, and received attention in some of the local newspapers. During our investigation here, which took place in the days before elections, the issue of online predators was raised in campaign ads that seemed to run every 10 minutes.

I wondered whether all this would keep men from showing up at our hidden camera house. As your about to see, it did not. 31-year old "sunsetliquid", who works in real estate drives more than four hours from Houston after chatting online with a decoy posing as a 13-year-old girl home alone. The man talked about kissing the girl all over and giving and receiving oral sex. He even says he could go to jail if he’s ever caught doing this.

But, when I confront him with the chat log--his words in black and white-- he claims he thought the girl was 18. He also says that he would never have had sex with the girl; he was just there to visit and take some pictures of her. He does have camera equipment in his car. Watch as he admits to me that he's seen an episode of “To Catch a Predator” and how he thought it was disturbing that so many men would try to meet a teen. Perhaps what will disturb him more is what's about to happen to him when he leaves our house.

8:11 p.m.
You'll see the man I told you about in a previous blog: Eric Rubalcava, who talked about how he wants to have sex with the girl and how he’ll kiss her all over. He recognized me and talked about seeing the “To Catch a Predator” series once before. I asked him what he thought about the show. He told me it was disturbing to see men go after young girls, but there he was allegedly doing the very same thing. The difference, he claimed, is that he really wouldn’t have had sex with the girl, although he admitted that he might have taken some photographs of her.

8:18 p.m.
It continues to surprise me how comfortable these men are walking into the home of a total stranger. When 40-year old "eearthshine66" walks in, he chats with our decoy who is standing behind a bar in the living room. He wants a beverage but notices there is no ice on the bar. As he continues his discussion with the girl, he walks into the kitchen to get some ice out of the freezer.

What he doesn't know is that while he's chatting away, the girl has left the room and I have gotten into position behind the bar. Watch his face closely as he realizes that his visit is about to take a turn for the worse. We find out "eearthshine66" has a criminal past. When he was 18, he says he was charged with sexual assault. He was later found guilty of fourth degree sexual assault and was put on 2 years probation.

8:29 p.m.
After the commercial break, you'll see that our investigation is about to take a tragic turn. A Perverted Justice contributor has been chatting online with someone calling himself "inxs00." At first he says he's a college student and sends explicit picture of a young man to the decoy posing as a 13-year-old boy. There's a phone conversation between the potential predator and an actor pretending to be the 13-year old. There's talk online and on the phone of getting together for sex. As the encounter continues, it becomes clear that the man on the other end of the conversation is actually 56 years old and holds a prominent position in Texas law enforcement. His phone number comes back to Louis W. Conradt Jr. and when the decoy adds him to his buddy list, the screen name goes from "inxs00" to "louiswconradt."

Late on a Saturday night, Murphy police confirm this is the same Louis W. Conradt Jr. who is an Assistant District Attorney in a nearby county. He'd been a prosecutor for more than 20 years. We'll never know why Conradt abruptly ended his conversations with the decoy and why he apparently started to delete material from a MySpace account, but in the eyes of law enforcement, he'd already committed a crime. That night, Murphy Police began the process of obtaining an arrest warrant and a search warrant for Conradt.

8:44 p.m.
Sunday morning, we know that Murphy Police have contacted the police in Terrell where Conradt lives to assist with his arrest. Dateline producers and I discuss whether it's best for me to stay at the house where more potential predators were scheduled to arrive or go to Terrell and try to get a word with Conradt after his arrest. The fact that a prosecutor had surfaced in this investigation is obviously significant and I chose to go to Terrell for what we thought was going to be a few hours. It ended being a much longer and much more tragic than anyone could have imagined.

As you're about to see, when officers attempted to serve the warrants, Conradt would neither answer the door or his phone. After about 45 minutes, a tactical team arrives and enters through the back. We can't see this, but enough time goes by that after we hear the pop of their forcing the back door open -- we know something didn't go as planned. I wonder to myself if Conradt simply wasn't at home. In a matter of minutes, a police lieutenant comes out and tells me that Conradt had shot himself in the head as officers entered the home.

You’re about to see how the rest of the story plays out and why it generated so much controversy. Obviously we'll never know exactly why the prosecutor chose to take his own life and there is no indication he knew he had surfaced in a Dateline investigation. But police believe his tragic decision is related to what's locked inside three computers taken from Conradt's home. As of this posting, the computer manufacturer is still trying to unlock those files and see what was apparently worth dying for.

In the end, 25 men were caught in this operation. They were charged with a felony online solicitation of a minor.  While many said they were innocent, they have not yet had a chance to enter a plea.

Next week, we head to the beach, Flagler Beach, Florida. It may be a small community by the sea. But still, potential predators keep coming. They all end up pleading not guilty, but some come up with excuses you may find hard to believe. You'll also meet a police officer who drove hours to get to the 'To Catch a Predator' house, with a gun in his pocket and an arsenal in his car.

Editor's note: Send us your thoughts, below. We're reading -- and will be responding to some of the blog comments on the community reaction in Texas. Watch this blog for that.

And to those who asked about Texas law, here's a link to how they define soliciting a minor of the Internet.

Your investigations have been extraodianary....Great Job
I've watched every one of the "To Catch a Predator" shows and I'm just amazed at what is going on out there. But, I'm wondering if it's ever the same with women trying to meet young boys/girls online.
I THINK THAT GUY THAT KILLED HIMSELF WAS JUST A COWARD AND A DISGRACE TO SOCIETY. THAT'S WHY HE CHOSE TO KILL HIMSELF SO HE WONT HAVE TO FACE OR DEAL WITH HIS PERVERTED SELF AND THE HUMILIATION.
I have been watching this from day one and as the mother of an 8 year old this is so distrubing!!!! How in the world do they not know Chris!!!!!
Why Dateline do not go after female predators ???? They should make a program with female predators also.
Keep it up and make it more regular. Would like to see you come to West Virginia, there have been alot of molesting cases here and these people need to be stopped.
I have watched the series since the beginning and as the mother of a 10 y.o.girl and 13 y.o. boy, I am totally frightened and aware that these pedophiles exist.Have you guys ever encountered a female pedophile b/c, if so, I don't think I've seen that one but I'm sure they exist.
I'm a Probation and Parole Officer and deal with pedophiles, unfortunately. If these programs can save at least one child from becoming a victim to one of these sick individuals, this is well worthwhile. Kudos to NBC and Mr. Hansen. Keep up the good work!
For every man that shows up and gets arrested, how many more are out there? When will they get it?
I have been watching the show from the beginning. I am appalled by the apparent scope of the predator problem. I was unaware that this was such a widspread eppidemic. Thank you for your efforts in getting these individuals off the street.
This show is interesting - i want to start my own to catch a predator program. I want to catch these creeps!!!

This series is saving lives. I don't think most people realize the long term effect sexual abuse has on a victim. I lost a daughter to suicide after she suffered from depression following an acquaintance rape at age 15. These kids do not have a clue what or who they are dealing with. Reality has a way of rearing it's ugly head as time goes on. Thank you for doing this. You are educating parents and children.
I wish they would start a program like that here in Canada. Most of those creeps get a slap on the wrist and are back out on the street the next day. I have a great solution to stop them. When they are found guilty, find an island as far away from land as possible and let them fend for themselves.
Hey Chris, My coworkers and I were discussing this morning that maybe you should change the name of the show to "To Catch a Stupid Predator". I mean, HOW stupid do you have to be to sit there and say, "Yep, I've seen all your shows", and still be sitting on that very barstool talking to you? I guess some guys don't realize that the saying "Two heads are better than one" refers to different people. ;-)
Hi Chris, I love what your doing to catch these sick people. I was wondering we have more than a normal amount (if you can call this normal) of registered sex offenders in my small village, could you run this sting here to catch some? Maybe we could get some of these predators off the streets. Thank you and keep catching these sicko's George Brown
i have watch all the to catch a preditor shows great job it still continues to amaze me these people can be so stupid. i think it would be interesting to at least know what some of these men get for sentances - maybe showing that would help deture some of the future preditors from even trying.
Chris, Why do you always seem to have shows in houses located in what appear to be white collar, professional neighborhoods? Why don't you have shows in blue collar, working class neighborhoods?
It's nice to get these creeps. However, I miss the real human interest stories Dateline used to show. Frankly, I'm quite bored knowing Tuesday on Dateline is going to be another episode of To Catch a Predator and will make for another Tuesday night of boring telivision.
Great job but I would like to know what the final punishments were in the cases. did law inforcement really follow thru? What are the chances of a what happend to story along with stats?
this is getting boring........show the female predators
i love your show.
I'm not sure this method of apprehending alleged predators is at all ethical. In fact, it is nearly Orwellian. I understand the fact that these men show up with the intent to have sex with an underage girl, that's clear. It's also wrong, of course. However, it's the method by which they are caught that is most distressing. Just as we shouldn't trust strangers online, so should we also not trust the police apparatus without question or the motivations of Dateline NBC.
I am an OB/gyn doc that sees the consequences of premature sexual relations, assaults and abuse on a daily basis. I commend your valuable work to stop these predators and protect our children. Please never stop. I just wish that there was a longer and stiffer jail sentence for predators. I see patients that have been damaged for years over these types of behaviors. Some are never healed and able to have normal relationships. I have two daughters myself that I will do anything to protect. Can I volunteer my home for you to use? We need to catch predators in NewJersey also.Every predator you stop saves the lives of multiple children as these individuals rarely stop at one. I've seen your shows with the individual you caught twice, so why is he free. We need stiffer laws. Thank you again for all you do.
You guys need to come to Memphis, TN and the surrounding area. I'd be curious to know who is in our backyard. Love the show you are brilliant and your team is brilliant keep it up!
Chris you guys are really doing some great things, I praise your work. What is wrong with these men? Is this what the world is coming to? I hate to think how much of this goes on in small cities in the south where men would think dateline would never show up.How about coming to Tenn?
The shows are great! How about one showing our children how easy it is for a predator to find them. I am the Step-Father of a 14 y/o girl; who thinks we are ruining her life by monitoring her internet activity. I'd like to prove to her how easy it is for these sleazy creeps to find her....What you think?
Chris and Dateline are doing a great job! Keep it up. But there are programs out there that help schools and parents teach kids about online safety. http://www.isafe.org is a school and community based program and http://www.livesafe.org is a parent program. Livesafe.org provides parents with a DVD and information on keeping their kids safe. ISafe is geared more on online safety... teaching kids how to be safe on social sites like myspace.com. Both programs are near free. Sorry for the "advertisement" of these programs, but they are good sources to start with.
Response to request for other Dateline stories: We are reporting other stories: Tune in Saturday 8 p.m. and Sunday 7 p.m. (we're back on Sundays starting this week).
why did the us senator get away with doing the same thing these guys did? he is ok because he was abused as a child, and he put himself in for counseling. That makes me sick because the laws dont apply the same to everyone
Great Job catching these people. Your next city should be Rochester, NY. The Police just caught men using the library computor to view porn sites. What is bad these men were in the Children Department.
My mom and I have been watching the show tonight and we think you guys need Terry Tate Office Linebacker to come in and tackle these freaks. LoL
Chris, How long have you been practicing your fake TV voice? You almost have it down! Keep up the good work.
This is a real eye opener. I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old. I don't miss a show. All of my friends who are parents do not miss a show. Thank you for educating society. Keep up the good work. We need tougher laws for creeps like this. One strike and you are out!
I like Chris Hansen! He's so brave and faces those people the way they deserve to be exposed.
Chris, is there someone in the house that will help you if one of the guys tries to hurt you?
Currently in class for certification as a Sex Offender Treatment Specialist It is a good that Mr. Hanson took the lead to catch predators who committ sexual offense on our children. This sends a message to our govenment that there is a problem and something should be done to protect society. Mr. Hanson has assisted with the cause to protect and educate people by way of the media. Much cheers to the media for covering predators and assisting law enforcement to do their jobs more effectively. Cheers to Perverted Justice and all staff who participated with catching a predator. We all have a part to do in protecting our society from predators who prey on our children. Therapist
CHRIS I JUST INJOY WATCHING THE REACTION OF THE PURP WHEN THEY ARE UNMASK.I CANT IMARGING BEING COMFRONTED BY FAMILY ARE FRIENDS WHEN THERE PROFILE IS SHOWN LIVE ON TV.WOW_WHAT A GREAT COUNTRY.
Bored?? This is not for your pleasure but for our education, raising our awareness of what is really happening in our shrinking world. I've got to believe that there are police jurisdictions currently doing this noble work, although we are not aware. Dateline: Please continue your valuable work with the law enforcement community. Thank you.
I think it's an entertaining show, but something has always bothered me. Millions of times per day people make life threatening comments to others "i'm gonna kill you"...etc. Why don't they do a show like that and ask people to come to a "fight location" and arrest them for "assault with intent to harm" or something. Since obviously these guys are getting arrested for something they said on the internet. If you want to see some criminal discussion on the internet, log into IRC on EfNet.
Fantastic series!!! Our prisons aren't big enough for these scum bags. How 'bout follow-up series as to what actually happened to these persons in court. that, too, would be most interesting and perhaps turn some of these folks around. Keep up the great work, Chris!!!
Go to Washington DC
sorry about that- livesafe.org should be livesecure.org.
Great job to Chris and all the wonderful volunteers to help put this program together. My wife and I thank you for making a difference for us, our children and our grandsons.
Chris are any female purps out there please profile them sometime.
I have to say that this is quite intriguing of a series. This does encourage "men" to find other forms of pedophilia and child enticement. The bottom line is that the internet does allow fictious and fantasy fulfillment. I believe that this is the highest form of satisfaction for Sexual Addicts, not only those chosen to be classified as "Predators". What assessment is being performed to prove that the men are "Predators" versus "Sex Addict"? These are 2 different types of individuals. This is a rising problem. Throw in the fact that we have children without proper supervision, the predators have their pickens available for cause. However, I do agree with the "Catching the Predator", but watching the reaction of some of these men, I see that not all of them are true to fact, "Predator" nor "Sex Addict". They are truly stuck in the mysticism of the internet. Also, out of curiousity, WHY ARE ONLY MEN the focus? With the national news, do women not partake in such behavior? That itself would be a myth.
I love your investigations that you have done on to catch a predator. I hope you keep it up. I have often wondered about the families that are suddenly faced with this nightmare. Do you plan to do any story about the families that have been affected.
You are doing a GREAT JOB on this whole series.... Sad that it can be done!.. Thank you to the local Police departments and all who participated in this. While it is a trajedy that the Assistant DA ended his life for this. It really shows things like this show no BIAS. There is no stereotypical person who does this.. From all walks of life. Bless this world.. I always watch out for my child and her friends and worry about those with out the proper parental supervision. How about doing something as to show the reality from the kids point...
"Theres something you should know........" Chris you are becoming internet famous all over the place. Everyone loves your one-liners.
I live in Glenpool, Ok., just outside of Tulsa. I wish so much that you would set up an investigation here. I have 2 granddaughters here in Glenpool, and I am always worrying that they will come across some of these creeps. Chris, you are doing an awesome job, and for all the kids you've helped, I thank you with most sincerity.
