Where are the female predators?

After every ‘To Catch the Predator’ broadcast, the Dateline inbox always gets this question from viewers: Where are the female predators?

“They are out there,” one e-mailer wrote. “I find it hard to believe given all the teacher scandals that there are no female Internet predators.”

Perverted-Justice has only ever encountered one female predator, according to Del Harvey, who has been a Perverted-Justice contributor since 2004 and who has acted as a decoy in the group’s investigations. The contributors use decoy profiles that are of girls and boys, but only men have shown up for meetings with what they thought to be underage teens.

Robert Weiss, executive director and founder of the Sexual Recovery Clinic in California (and who has been featured in one of our episodes), says that while their center treats both male and female offenders, sexual compulsions on the Internet do seem to be a male-dominated thing. “Women, in general, seem to look for relationships and not necessarily sex – although female offenders will have sex with a minor. They’re just less likely to seek someone out randomly online.”

He adds that men tend to me more visual (which is probably why pornography often factors into potential predators’ online chats with decoys), and men tend to be more comfortable with sex detached from relationships.

Weiss also says that in relationships, women are generally less aggressive than men — and that this is also true in this case. “So a ‘female predator’ needs to cross more social and cultural lines to actually become an offender. But when they reach that point or seek out help, they are generally more troubled and are tougher to treat.”

So what makes a ‘predator’? For Weiss, a man or woman truly needs help if the desire to have a sexual relationship with an underage teen turns into attempts to do so. Weiss says, “You’re not a predator if you have occasional fantasies about underage teens and don’t take it further than that. Predators take it to the next step by seeking out images, chats and eventual meetings with kids. Any attempt to make that kind of fantasy into a reality is predatory.”

Also, the person must be taking advantage of an inequity of power – due to age or the nature of the relationship. Perhaps this is why for many, including for those us working at Dateline, it is more upsetting to see people like teachers, doctors, and rabbis — people who are expected to protect youngsters — walk into the house.

Weiss hopes the series encourages more people who need help to seek it.  He says that the clinic has received numerous calls from people who, after watching the Dateline reports, identified with the problem and feared they could be potential predators. “There are a lot of things at play for those men — problems that exist and things that happen to an individual — before they end up showing up at the Dateline house,” he says. “Compulsive sexual behavior is treatable,” he says.

Dear Chris,I watch your show without fail .I am a the div.parent of a child in florida who is a computer chat nutI worry all the time because her mom leaves her alone alot.she even has one of those my space ads she's a good kid but please keep doing what your doing and God Bless all @DATELINE MSNBC..THIS SHOW HAS A GREAT IMPACT..YOUR FAN LOU FROM RHODE ISLAND
DEAR CHRIS, I WANT TO THANK YOU AND YOUR STAFF FOR DOING THE CATCH-A-PREDATOR SERIES. THESE PEOPLE ARE DESTROYING MANY LIVES AND THEY ALL DON'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND OR CARE. THIER THINKING OF THEIR OWN SATISFACTIONS AND NOTHING ELSE. CHRIS DON'T YOU THINK THAT THE LAWS NEED TO BE TOUGHER TOWARDS THESE CRIMES SO THE VICTIMS CAN SEE SOME SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES PUT UPON THEM. IN MY OPINION THEY SHOULD BE PROSECUTED TO THE HIGHEST EXTENT OF THE LAW. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.GOD BLESS YOU. I'LL BE WATCHING!!!
HI CHRIS, I HAVE WATCHED EVERY ONE OF YOUR SHOWS AND THINK THEY ARE GREAT. IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE HOW MANY OF THOSE PREDATORS ARE OUT THERE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK..A FAN FROM WOODBURN, OREGON
This is absolutely a social problem. Parents simply need to be more vigilant about what their children are doing online. In the past, television was the tried and true babysitter... then came video games... and now the internet. Parents need to quit relying on technology to raise their children and step up to the plate, by getting directly involved with their children's lives.
Please keep up the excellent work, I am stunned at how many there are, and even more stunned at how many of these same men go back on looking for young girls after already being caught. We need to put a stop to it, and I don't care if the predator is a politic, religous teacher/honor person, if you try and pick up young girls, kids, and they are just that, kids, then these men need to be taken off the street!!!!!
this is a huge problem...i think teens and their parents should be more careful with the internet!
The reason men are the only ones caught is because they are targeted! Everyone do what is right and research perverted justice and ask yourself why dateline pays them in excess of $100,000 to produce predators. Then ask yourself if the public would agree with 10+/- armed police officers throwing a woman down on camera and roughing her up if that would be acceptable. Research the terms of service agreements that will soon be not able to be enforced because dateline and perverted justice (not law enforcement) choose to ignore and lie about ages and do not follow the rules. Research how the Arizona Supreme Court in May of 2006 said no evidence from Perverted Justice would be allowed in their court of law. There are underlying factors such as .....microsoft owns a major part of dateline to catch a predator, and think about the show and how the top three chat programs it talks about are aol, yahoo, and myspace. They label these programs as the worst on the internet, some they say are pedo enablers. Might they be the competition? Take a look at your computer and see if the microsoft based chat program came with it and then ask yourself why is the program that comes on virtually EVERY computer not even busted one person? Its a way to market their product and at the expense of innocent families and guys that make bad decisions not necessarily illegal ones. Read up on identity theft and identity fraud, wire tapping laws, consent laws that deal with hidden microphones and cameras, entrapment laws, read up on how it is illegal to act as a private investigator or pay someone to act as a private investigator and then ask yourself why they get away with what they do. Its all fun and games until they trick one of your family members into meeting. Read the diff articles on how they exagerate the Predator stats and how they admittedly just made the number 50,000 predators up. The Predator issue is a serious one but there is not an epidemic like they fabricate and want you to believe. After all if there was no epidemic they couldnt sell you software to monitor your child online. Also if you think this is such a good thing get windows vista and have a built in patch to your personal computer that allows the government to access your computer at will. DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON TV your parents taught you that as a child why should it change?
Hello Mr. Hansen, While I am very glad that To Catch A Predator is doing the work it's doing.....to demystify the frightening range of what child sexual predators look like, what their backgrounds are, etc.......I remain concerned that there is less than a 15% chance, I believe that a child sexual predator will be a non-intimate member of the family/community to the child. 85% or more of child sexual predators are: mothers, fathers, step-fathers, step-mothers, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters (in siblings cases, the sibling is almost always found to have a child sexual abuse history of their own from other family members), extended family living close by such as grandparents, etc....close family friends who are in and out of the house, the child's teacher, the child's youth pastor, etc. The last workshop on such topics I attended placed the figure at somewhat less than 12% of children were molested outside of the family, and well known respected familial authority figures, such as mentioned above. So please, remember that almost all of the percentages of children abused are abused by those close to them, that a stranger-danger situation is very unlikely to happen. My own work in the mental health/social services field in New Mexico has corresponded to these figures, as well. Child sexual abuse is almost always generational, as is physical and verbal abuse of children. Please help protect children in the most dangerous environment there is, the family home. jayd from NM
I support what you are doing and it has helped everyone see what is going on on the internet BUT when I looked at MYSPACE.COM which my teenage son is on why is it most of the teenage ladies and 'underage' girls have such provocative pictures of them posted on MYSPACE??????? where are the parents?????? and, why is all this accepted as normal and has anyone seen the latest rock videos, i did and i was like OMG!!!!!!!!!! maybe it is our entire society, they degrade women so much and why do women 'embrace' it?????? I think the parents, the 'provocative' talk and pictures and the predator are all 'to blame'................
Keep doing these shows. It is so important that these sickos be exposed. I watch every single show without fail, and yes, it does get a little redundant, but my husband and I have yet to watch a show where we don't look at eachother and say "what the hell is wrong with people?". So please, do not ever think that these shows will get old. You always manage to throw in a twist here and there, and if you don't there is some sicko that will.
So you liberals at MSNBC are finally admitting there is a difference between men and women? Go figure...
The numbers speak for themselves! Could it be men have big ego problems and feel they don't have anything to offer women their own age.
I've watched to catch a predator a few times now I know your catching all these men who obviously have issues but i've been on the chat lines and i've had young women sending me messages and web sites to see there naked pics without even asking oh and i'm also a female, some of these girls are asking for what they are getting to give out your address, phone # come on how stupid can you be! I don't agree with how your framing these guys and telling us on tv what they are saying to these under age girls but not what these under age girls are saying to them i'm sure they're leading them on! It all has to do with how well these parents are paying attention to there children, I have children and believe me there are way's to check on the things they are doing online! So if parents would take the time to pay attention to whats going on around them these things wouldn't happen as much.
Keep up the good work. Never miss your show....
Hi Crhis: You are the perfect candidate for this program, so smooth, keep doing it. I guess in the privacy of their own homes these predators think they will never get caught in this horrendous crime. Trudy British Columbia Canada
Hello Date line, I have to say thank you for all you do, I know by you doing that you are keeping our kids safe. I am a little bit scared, I have a weak 14 year old daugther who thinks everyone is not bad. I do not have my PC hooked at home, but she can use it at the libary, not to much, but the reason is that I found a 18 year old writing her on myspace, I have deleted him from her profile, but I think that he should be in some kinda of trouble. He would be asking her to come over and she would respond with a chill, since I will not let her go anywhere, but he was writing her that he wanted TO F her and that he was home J Off. I think that if the show aired again here in FortMyers, FL he would be on your next list.. I have printed out the emails and I am not sure if the police can do anything! He is on my space by $$MIKE THE GREAT$$... HOPE YOU COME BACK AND DO IT AGAIN SEEMS LIKE THIS ONE PREYS ON YOUNG GRILS AT THE LIBARY
I beleive the "To Catch a Predator" production is doing a great service removing these predators off the street! Keep up the good work! I remember how surprised all involved with the production was the number of offenders, and it is shocking. I do feel the percentages would be much lower with female predators than male predators. I don't know for sure, but I am curious if there are any plans for attempting to catch adult females who are seeking out minors.
The female predators are out there. There are less of them but they are so much sicker and more perverse than the average male predator . After your show I found a couple (one CA, one OK),but the horrible material/scope of the offences to my sensibilities made me back off. Once you dance with the devil the devil changes you, and those few chats were more that enough. Good luck and keep up the good work!!!!
As a therapist and having treated sexual victims and predators of both sexes I am certain that an appropriately baited trap for female predators would yield offenders. That it has not happened is probably because they are not interested in what is being offered the way it is presented.
I think what you are doing is a great thing. However when you entice someone that is wrong. If kids start talking to people, that are older people, It is the parents responiablity to what their children and to restrict their children in using the internet!
I have been watching this show everytime it airs and my husband and I continue to be dumbfounded at hot people continue to be so stupid as to show up and then the excuses they give. As a parent of three, I cannot fathom where the drive comes from. I wholly support what you are doing and hope that it can prevent at least one child from being hurt. I wish you'd be able to do this in more small towns so that other parents and communities could get a wake up call.
The people that are really guilty here are the parents that give internet access to their children without parental controls. We have a law here in Texas that all firearms must be locked up so that the children don't have access. If you people really believe that the internet is a danger, LOCK it up. Murphy PD has not posecuted a single case to date because of the procedures used, which has been widely interpreted as the most incredable case of entrapment in the law inforcement industry. Even MSNBC held off airing the show for 4 months.
Hello Chris, I like to catch a preditor. I think it is great that we are getting to the truth about what happens in online chats. I think you guys should take a trip to Utah. I have heard of a lot of problems with online preditors there and hope for Dateline to look into it.
Thank you Chris for helping in protecting the kids from such preditors. These are people who do not think of what there action does to others. It would be nice to show what has happen to the lives of these preditors after they were caught and how it has touched more then just them but their friends and familys. You are all doing a great job keep it up. I wish I could help.
I am the mother of a 14 year old daughter. I was also victimized at age 13, long before there was an internet. I just watched "To Catch a Predator" for the second time, and saw the Texas group of criminals. I resent the fact that male pedophile predators of young boys and girls can allege that women would do such things. While there are some examples of unbalanced female teachers taking advantage of young students (and these are very wrong), I don't find it at all surprising that the sting team has only encountered one female online predator. Unfortunately, a small percentage of sick men do this, mistreating vulnerable children to meet their out-of-control needs. Women are capable of many bad things, but this particular behavior is mostly-male, and it does no good to deny it. Thank you to Dateline and all of the law-enforcement staff for stopping as many of these predators as possible.
Hello Chris. My wife and I watch the show every week and we like what you are doing, and support you 100%. If you guys ever want to try a different location I would be very honored to let you guys use our house. My wife was once a victim of a predator and has a child from him, that's why we both agree completely with the way you approach this subject. We live in the middle of the woods and have a very long driveway so they would have to get very close and there's no place for them to run. We hope to hear something back soon, keep up the good work.
jennifer griffith from la mesa california couldn't have said it better. what in the world is a 15 year old kid doing talking sex to a full grown adult stranger anyways? where is mom and dad? i believe it should be a crime for both parties involved to talk sex and/or meet in expectation of either. in as much as its legally wrong and morally unaccepted for a grown adult to do or attempt such acts , it should be equally wrong for a teenager to seekout such activity with an adult. such inticement only encourages a sick mind. kids noadays arent held responsible for thier own actions and parents seem to always bear the brunt of too many "acts" gone bad. kids dont understand that the people / strangers they are talking to in chat rooms are actually real people with some, namely adults, or all having bad intentions .i have heard stories where teenagers have chatted with adults for weeks before either running away to meet these adults or meeting for a few minutes. having a law that states no minor child shall converse, trade pics,or agree to meet, an adult that such aquintance initiated from an online chat, shall be a crime . if the fact that it is a crime to do so deters just one child , then maybe it will have saved one life and that to me is worth it.
Even more than being shocked at the numbers of predators you can expose, I am completely dumbfounded at the people who make excuses for these perverts. People... WE are adults. WE are the ones responsible for whatever WE choose to do with children. I don't care if a 13 year old girl strips off naked and walks around your living room on her hands begging you to please touch her. She is 13. She is a CHILD. If YOU attempt to have sex with her KNOWING she is a 13 year old child... YOU are SICK and YOU should be taken out. As adults it is OUR responsibility to say NO to children who are straying down the wrong path. Adults who will use a child's poor decision-making ability and/or poor parental role models as an axcuse to exploit that child to meet their own sick needs are CHILD PREDATORS and they should be LOCKED AWAY. PERIOD.

Obviously the treatments and punishment do not work. In a sensible world when they come out of the house cops would yell "Down on the ground or use the rope hanging from that tree, and we prefer you use the rope and we'll call it suicide."
great work chris and dateline, these guys are bad news to young teens.they get caught dead to right and say they were there to help the teen, wern,t going to do nothing but talk. it makes me sick..keep up the good work maybe some parents will see what kids can get into on the internet...joedice mass..
In response to Dave Chapman (Sent Saturday, February 10, 2007 5:21 PM) Can you prove it was really a woman? Did you actually MEET them? If not, you can rest assured it was a MAN posing as a woman!!!
To catch a predator is a great show! I wonder how many people quit chatting once they find out they are chatting with an underage person?
Dear parent of two, I don't know if you have been living in a cave or if the thuoght of an adult being with a child is O.K with you but no matter the number of adults who pray on our childeren or regardless of motive by dateline these so called men "who just mad bad choices" as you put it should for know reason that I can see seek out sexual contact with a child I truly hope with all my heart that one of your childeren is never a victom of of this unspeakable act an act that I for one think is unforgivable however Your e-mail does not suprise me there is always someone out there willing to blame the victom
Hi Chis, I think your show is the ticket for those who surf the internet looking for young children. I'm just baffled at those who have seen your show and think they will never be caught. Keep up the good work, we need your show to come to the DC Metropolitan area.
I think this show is overrated and ridiculous. It is just another reality tv show to get Americans hooked on. Chris from dateline isn't protecting the youth of America from "predators"...why don't you parents start.
I really like the information provided by you, I just want to say that could you please make it more familly oriented , so that we can show it to our kids without any questions asked from them. Its gives a clear picture of how sick people thay are on net surfing/chating.
IN RESPONSE TO: parent of 2 (Sent Saturday, February 03, 2007 8:29 AM) COMMENT.... I honestly think you are trying to justify something you have done, or have thought about doing, while reading your long paragraph i sensed a lot of manipulation...maybe your mad b/c now you cant talk to young girls/boys online, b/c...NBC is doing a great job...now you might get caught, hopefully sooner than later, for you kids sake... Chris and NBC please let me know how i can help, i was once a victim of this horrible and VERY REAL EPIDEMIC. Parents do everything you can to talk to your kids, there is no price you can put on any software aimed at protecting your family.
I've watched your show several times and am impressed with the work you do. I'm always struck by the type of predators that shows up. It's almost as if your show has created a profile for child predators--mostly white males and a few men of Hispanic and Middle Eastern descent. I think I might have seen one black man show up in your series??? I guess my question is similar to the question about why there are no women predators. Is this kind of criminal/predator, like a serial killer, not often black???
In response to Ron Duncan, who wants to have "a law that states no minor child shall converse, trade pics,or agree to meet, an adult that such aquintance initiated from an online chat, shall be a crime . . ." I am aware there is much worse on pedophile message boards and in their so-called "community." Victims of sexual crimes and their families have fought for years, along with law enforcement, to stop the "blame the victim" behavior. As far as parents monitoring what their children are doing on the Internet -- of course, all parents that care should do this. But to blame the child (in these cases, they are only 12 or 13 years old, or "decoys" pretending to be that age) -- the child is so far younger than the legal age of consent that no matter what they say or do, they cannot be responsible. As the mother of a fourteen-year old, she wouldn't know the consequences of such actions. She is not an adult conducting an adult entertainment business, she is a child. And they are responding to the pedophile's encouragement. I didn't have to see but two or three examples to see the way these conversations go. Anyway, it's a free country as far as speech goes. I just hope that most people can see through the "blame the victim" mentality to the rationalization of pedophilia that is behind this type of statement. I'd call it ignorant, but it's no more ignorant than "she asked for it" by wearing a short skirt in rape cases. Even today - sometimes that works.
I appreciate what Dateline is doing to get the predators off the computers and streets, keep up the great work!!! I can not go without commenting on the spaces that young girls set up for themselves and the teasing and taunting that is performed on the internet by these young girls. Why not do a show on notifying parents about what their children are doing online. Shame on you parents for not having parental controls.
Dear Chris and NBC, THANK YOU for the excellent and informing show , "" TO CATCH A PREDATOR "". I am apalled at the so-called ""normal"" men out there that continue to persue the children of America---in such a horrible and vile way. It is amazing what your show has brought to the attention of Americans, and to try to help parents learn the possible things that their young children are getting involved in. The MOST amazing thing in the shows, is the caliber of men involved in these situations, ( that of lawyers, doctors, teachers, school counselors, policemen, fireman, and even clergy). To most of use, these are professions that we, as well as our children,"" put their trust in "". Please continue to expose these evil.
I can't possibly imagine anyone not wanting to do anything about the major problem we have with solicitation of minors by adults. I am very grateful to Dateline for exposing these criminals. Unfortunately, the children of Thailand and other countries cannot rely on a program such as this, to stop the psychological and physical damage done to their most innocent and vulnerable citizens.
i also can't believe that any community would have a problem with your show setting up a sting......keeping our kids safe should be the number 1 priority! you are more than welcome to set one up in our town anytime. The more of these predators that are found are, the better. Go get them. I wish i could help out. I would be more than willing to help.
THANK YOU DATELINE NBC FOR DOING WHAT OTHER WOULD LIKE TO DO BUT WON'T!!!THESE ARE NOT STING OPERATIONS, IF DATELINE WAS NOT THERE, A CHILD WOULD BE HARMED INSTEAD OF CATCHING A PREDATOR! THESE MEN KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG AND THEN GET UPSET WHEN THEY ARE CAUGHT. I WOULD GLADLY LET THEM USE MY HOUSE TO LURE THESE IDIOTS AND GET THEM OFF THE STREETS. MY FOUR CHILDREN DO NOT NEED TO BE EXPOSED TO THESE FILTHY ADULTS AND THEIR INTENTIONS. NOBODY'S CHILDREN SHOULD.
Although I believe that all people should have the freedom of speech, I truly believe that "Parent of 2" must either be insane, or a sexual predator. I cannot come up with any reason why anyone would be so totally against Dateline and their To Catch a Predator series, unless that person is indeed a predator themself... Has Dateline already caught you in the act? Have you already lost everything? Is that why you find it necessary to rant and rave against a company and a show that is doing such a wonderful community service? Either way, you should be ashamed of yourself. I am also a parent of two, a single mom... and I am so thankful for what Dateline and Chris Hanson and Perverted Justice are doing to protect our children. Thank you!!!!!!
ADULTS HITTING ON ADULTS I have watched the Datline episodes of men contacting underage girls. There is also the male preditor who hits on adult vulnerable women. Some men are only after cybersex and to see how much control they can achieve over the woman. Some others are in it for whatever they can get, sex, money, control. There are a lot of women who are seeking some kind of relationship for attention and/or sex. These women start to believe the lines the men are saying. The men ask questions to find out what the women want to hear. If the woman is really needy they end up loosing their money and most important their self-esteem. There needs to be more exposure of these men. Many of them use the internet multiplayer game sites to find their targets. They start out with innocent conversation during games. They slip in a few lines to seek a more intimate conversation. If the wormen respond, they escalate it and ask to be added on their friends list. Once they get onto the womans friends list the frequencey of contact and depth of the conversations increases. Some man are married and do this for the thrill of cybersex and control. Others are single and will actually want to meet the women. Why not expose this type of predator?
I am a huge fan of the show, what you are doing is unbelievable. I do have a young step-daughter and it really does make you have a stronger sense of protection through the internet. Thanks! Now i do have one thing....is it really necessary for these cops to wrestle these guys down to the ground, i know it only happened once, but to use a taze a person, i mean they treat these guys like they are robbing a bank and armed and dangerous, i just think that there is an easier less harmful way to actually take them to custody. Don't get me wrong they deserve what they are getting, but hopefully the arrest portion isnt for rating and "exciting" tv. Trust me i am still going to watch and you are doing a great job to get them off the streets! Good Job!!
Chris, you are doing a great job of exposing child predators. It's mind boggling that these men would continue to do this. I have to wonder if this not a setup by prevertedjustice.com, becaus ewhen i first saw your show, I thought entrapment. But things seem to on the up and up. But I do worry about your safety. Please becareful.
Great job, Chris!
