Campaign ads, unhappy neighbors, and other challenges in Murphy, Texas

For our ninth "To Catch A Predator" investigation, we’re set up in a large brick house in an upper middle class subdivision in Murphy, Texas-- a bedroom community outside of Dallas. It will turn out to be one of the most challenging environments in which we’ve ever worked.

First off, it’s the weekend before election day and one of the most high-profile campaign issues in the race for Texas Attorney General is cracking down on computer predators. In fact as we’re putting the finishing touches on our hidden camera house, we see the campaign commercial running virtually every 10 minutes showing an Internet predator being hauled away from his computer by police and put under arrest. If that’s not a deterrent, I don’t know what is.

But, the next thing we know, Del and Frag from Perverted-Justice are telling us our first visitor is just moments away. He’s a businessman who owns, among other things a fast food restaurant. He’s not sure about coming inside the house though and instead wants to drop off a Web cam for our decoy so that she can perform a sexually suggestive act.

Just moments before he’s due to arrive, there is another challenge. The audio board, the piece of equipment our sound technician uses to control all of the microphones, goes dead. That means we have gone from something like 10 microphones to 2. And the one wireless microphone on our decoy is dodgy at best. As she walks out to the front porch to talk to the potential predator, she is at the outer range of the receiver. As you’ll see, we get through it all and ultimately scramble to get another audio board.

But there are more surprises.

For the first time, we have neighbors in the area walk by the house unhappy with the fact that there is an investigation going on. Usually the neighbors are passing chocolate chip cookies to us over the back fence. Here in Murphy, a city council member was apparently upset that the police chief did not inform him of the investigation in advance. He rallied some neighbors to parade outside our house. This obviously would have been an inconvenient time to have one of our guys show up.

Within an hour things calmed down and we resumed. (Police tell us that later, after they gave an explanation as to exactly how the investigation was being conducted, some neighbors who were initially skeptical were more supportive.) In spite of all this, 25 men were caught in our hidden camera investigation. And as you’ll see -- they come from all walks of life including some surprising professions.

The investigation in Murphy, Texas airs tonight 8 p.m. Tuesday on NBC. Click here for a video preview of some of the men we met there.

These men are sick monsters......if Dateline is able to catch one on camera, redhanded trying to have Sex with a minor then good for Dateline. We should all be so helpful. These guys are not first timers, how many young lives have they ruined or scarred with there sick sexual fantasies with our children??
I realize that online predators are a problem and I would hope that the majority of America does as well. I am not sure if the show continues to air because we are still educating people on the dangers or because we have found some sick form of entertainment in watching people ruin their lives by the bad decisions they make. Personally I have seen the show once and understand the danger so I don't watch it anymore. Are people really that stupid that we need to continue to air it? Or.....are the ratings so good that captialism has taken over and we are now just selling advertisement during a new type of entertainment? Maybe you can address my question during one of your shows and justify why the show is still being produced. In my opinion it comes down to the following; we the people are stupid and slow learners which might very well be the case, you have not reached the majority of the people with your message, or pure capitalism at work. The first two are understandable and I hope that is the answer. The last reason is just shameful!!!
I find this series fascinating; but I wonder if they have attempted to catch women predators; or is this a male-only type of crime? I appreciate all the efforts that have gone into this. Keep it up.
My husband and I are in agreement on this. Thanks for catching so many MEN doing this, but are you ever going to attempt to catch any WOMEN. WOMEN are just as capable of doing this as men are. In the future I hope to see you catch just as many WOMEN as men.
When are you coming to NJ? I have small children and family members and love your show, it exposes the trash that we live with and as a parent, I would like you to come to my neighborhood.
What this Dateline series has shown, and continues to show, is just how widespread of an issue this really is, and just how diverse the perpetrators of these acts are. Prior to this, many people (myself included) seemingly looked upon these types of predators with a more stereotypical view; as if they could be "spotted in a crowd." Kudos are due to Dateline and Perverted-Justice for opening our eyes to the problem.
I want to commend your show for taking a stand against the sexual abuse and, often, destruction of an innocent soul. By airing these shows and exposting the predators, I am certain your show has stopped many potential situations from happening - if only for fear of being caught. As a victim of childhood sexual abuse, I do find myself riveted watching these people be apprehended and forced to face the consequences for their actions. So many others have been left unknown, so many other victims left with the painful memories - it is refreshing to see justice brought upon some. Thank you for taking these people off the streets, and I commend you for not being ashamed to expose these people to the public. Their shame is a small price to pay for the lifelong anguish they have or may have placed on an innocent child. Thank you Dateline.
Dateline is doing a good job catching these perverts. Thanks for doing a terrific public service. Seems like every man you catch claims that it was the first time they had done this. Yeah, right.
What amazes me is that "ADULTS" would protest the fact that nbc is trying to put criminals who pray against children behind bars. Why be upset? Guilty conscious? People need to realize that these people portrait themselves as normal idividuals. The sad fact is the majority of these people are married and/or parents.
I've noticed that "Dateline" sets up these stings only in states where that take a hard line on supposed "child predators". Perhaps NBC,Hansen and those right-wing nuts Perverted Justice know that their case wouldn't even hold water in places New York or Illinois. I just wish Chris Hansen would admit the obvious: this show is all about the entrapment of innocent people and the ratings it garners. Shame on both NBC and Chris HAnsen.
I think this To Catch a Preaditor is starting to wear a bit thin. You Dateline shows use to be a lot more thrilling and more informative to watch. It is obvious that no matter how many times you show this people are still going to do this act. I used to enjoy your shows.. I think it's time to watch 60 minutes.
I'm wondering if they'll cover the concerns the neighbors had about the 2 police chases or the drugs tossed from one of the fleeing cars. Or the concerns about armed predators. Like the one who shot himself.
We keep watching "To Catch A Predator" not because it's entertainment, we keep watching because it provides a useful tool & resource for our children. I make my daughter wath every single episode. As a teen, she spends countless hours on the internet...I WANT HER TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF PREVERTS ARE OUT THERE. I want her to know that from every walk of life, around every corner, predators are out there. They don't know race, orgin, creed or culture. They're our neighbors, our teachers, our friends even our clergy. Every episode she watches (and every teenager watches) is another lesson learned. Please don't terminate this show. Tod Runyon King George, Va
It amazes me that men continue to be so stupid.....these men get what they deserve, I have no pity at all....
I have questioned the motives and methods of the people doing this show before, but unfortunately, it continues. This program has made Chris Hansen a celebrity and put perverted justice and its supporters in the national eye. However, many of the comments and playacting by perverted justice are misleading, intentionally enticing and entrapping. I'm sure some of these guys are slimey characters -- but some of the people you profile on this show are clearly first time offenders. I wonder how many of these first timers, who have never done something like this before are acting out a fantasy in part because Predator makes it appear all these oversexed teenagers are waiting to bang middle aged men? The perverted justice part may well be the very fact that they show up on tv -- while perverted justice, the secretive group, makes thousands of dollars in fees.

Those neighbors had children with them, I would think they would want you there protecting their kids!!!!
I am very confused as too why a community would get upset over something that would help the community protect there children. We need that type of help BADLY here in Orlando FL
I salute Chris and Dateline for exposing these monsters.......
In my opionion To Catch A Predator is doing wonders for actually showing who the predators are and for actually catching the predators who might never have been caught otherwise. Obviously alot of these predators are watching the show and it makes them fearful which makes them less likely to go out and physically prey on children. And watching the neighbors in Murphy Texas trying to scare away the predators was not a good thing because they won't be caught and charged. Keep up the good work.
Dateline, Why haven't you came to SMall Town Texas, like Kemp.. I know there are a bunch here...
I think that what Dateline is doing is absolutely necessary. It is unfortunate that it happens but face it people, it does happen and you can't pretend it doesn't. I just moved to Frisco, Texas from California, not too far from Murphy and I'm sure it is embarassing that this happened in such a nice community but once again, face it, it does happen. I don't understand why people are so mad. Do you think it is ok just to ignore the possibilities? What if that was your child at home alone? Don't you want to know what kind of community you live in? Don't you want to teach your children not to be nieve? I think this area is beautiful and the people are a lot more friendly but you still have to be cautious, with anyone. I definately don't think the show is appropriate for children of any age to view but it is our job as parents to make them aware of their surroundings. Even if that means that the "poor teacher" who was caught just had his life ruined on national TV. Don't you think that is at least what he deserves? What if that was your child being solicited? Then what? You can't raise your children thinking that nothing bad happens in this world. I have young children and I would NEVER take a chance with them. People who pretend everyone is good are taking chances with their children. I can't tell you how many cars I see picking kids up from school who leave their cars running with younger kids in the car just so they won't have to wait in the carpool line. Why would you use them as bait and be oblivious to your surroundings? Then when something terrible happens you wonder "why"? I have been watching "To Catch a Predator" for quite some time. I think it is educational to what kind of people are out there. The more you are aware the better protected you can be. My parents raised my siblings and I to be street smart as well as book smart and I think they are equally important. Dateline, thank you for exposing such potentially evil people surrounding our community, maybe next time people will think twice before they do something they know is wrong and hopefully one day people will be so scared you will run out of reasons to do "To Catch a Predator"
Chris Hanson is AWESOME!! What he's doing and showing the public the possibilites is amazing. Unfortunately in 2007 the people who we think we can trust, we can't. The teachers, police men, and people we let into our homes and trust them and then they are possible of doing this. How sick.
Why don't you show the consequences of these actions to the children Yes it's a big step in getting these predators off the street but There are kids who need to realize that not only is it dangerous to do this but could also lead to legal repercussions Good Work
I have to agree with Curious Woman, WA - are there no women who fall for these same traps? It's misleading that the show only focuses on men as if they are the only people who would fall to this tempatation. I do love the show, and appreciate that you are identifying these criminals.
Chris keep up the good work, we need more people like you to keep people like these off the street. I can't understand how sick they are and they need help and personnally they should not be let back out in the public. I live in N.H. and there are so many here and it is sad that are children around the world are suffering because of people that are sick and just don't care. I look forward to all your furture shows keep up the good work. Sincerely
I live in Murphy Tx and I am very glad this was done in my city!! I am also glad the show is aired on national tv. Hopefully all the disgusting pedifiles will get the message: DON'T MESS WITH MURPHY!! I am so proud of our police department and our police chief. They handled these creeps very professionally and without incident. Thank you MPD.
I can't believe the Murphy town is upset about the Dateline predators I think is because they are afraid of seeing one of their family members on the show,if you came to Naples FL.you are very welcome Chris and your team we have a lot of those perverts here in Collier county, why is this people upset? you guys are doing a favor to the parents ,and children's of that town I disagree with them and I hope you continue doing your job wich I applaud I wold let you guys use my place if you ever need it...ratings or not we are cleaning this world of those low life animals I can't believe they are married and with little children are they sick? also is the parents fault of the kids beeing in chat room with all what is going on now ,I have three children and they din't do chat with strangers they know it was danger so parents be more cautious with your kids ...maria
I applaude anything that gets these sick people off the streets. If more of these people were off the streets it wouldn't be so scary to send our children out just to play, or visit with friends. I could care less about the ratings for the show. If it increases, so be it. THE MAIN thing this is accomplishing is to show people just how low these guys (or girls) will go to get what they want. Keep up the good work Dateline, hopefully you can make a difference.

I really enjoy watching your show Chris Hansen I wished it would come on every nite or once a week. I am so happy that your care so much about the children I wished every one cared as much as you do. I think the neighbors that was protesting in front of the house should be arested. That's like interfering with police work. I don't understand why some people would want to do something like that to a child and some of them have children of their own would they want someone to do that to their children. Chris you are doing a wonderful job and PLEASE KEEP UP THE WORK. I CAN WATCH YOUR SHOW EVERY NITE. I TRY NOT TO MISS ANY OF YOUR SHOWS.
I'm glad to see that most of the citizens of Murphy have their heads screwed on straight. The safety of children should and must be paramount. These men are beneath contempt, and, it seems to me, that probation is far to lenient a sentence. Perhaps sentencing guidelines need to be revisited. Chris, what steps are there to insure your safety with these men in such close proximity to you.
I am curious...from all the shows, have there been other victims coming forward saying they were abused/approached by one of these scumbags??
Hey - would you please try to set up more of these stings throughout the country. Our children need you! Dori - Lenawee County, MI
To Mr. XYZ, there is a reason why they are still producing "To Catch A Preditor". Do you really think that one episode would solve the problem of sexual preditors? These very ill men are continuing to exploit "young children" even after appearing on the show. I also think that parents are being nieve to think that their child would know better. I hope that any body thinking about meeting a child for any reason would think twice. So even if one person decides not to meet with a child, thinking that Chris Hansen and Dateline might be there, I would say, "keep up the good work!"
In all nine episodes, the most shocking thing I have ever seen in this series was the protest. The predators themselves I'm actually beginning to understand. Theoretically, you could categorize everyone that has shown up at every Dateline investigation into three categories: people with true mental abnormalities that may require some psychology, people that just get off on being as disgusting as possible, and once in a while, people that feel because of their status that they can do virtually anything with no consequences. I understand the predators, but I can't imagine for the life of me why anyone would protest. That to me is a red flag that children should NOT live in that community. The argument that Dateline attracted child predators is bunk; kids attract predators, not investigations. The fact that someone FROM Murphy was caught in the investigation should be evidence enough of such. If you're looking for new locations, I'd like to recommend my hometown. It's a nice place to live if you have money, but a horrible place to try and make money, so the typical residents are old-money elitists wrapped up in what I like to call Haliburton: The Home Game. If you set up here, I will not be even slightly surprised if some of the people that protest your presence showed up at the house the night before.
I support Chris Hansen and Dateline and the police departments as well as the "Perverted Justice" staff for trying to draw attention to this problem in the US. Far too many predators are still out there and I am in full agreement of this means to catch them. Keep up the good work. I would love to see predators from my community exposed and prosecuted. I believe the safety of our children is first and foremost.
I just finished watching the Murphy, Tx show. When this series first aired, I Think the message was sent adequately. Now this series has become another reality entertainment show. Seems the only ones benefiting from the ratings are NBC and Chris Hansen. Just think of all the guys that are lured for sex by dateline who otherwise lead the same disfunctional lives we all lead and then have a trigger presented to you that causes bad judgement and ruins your life. Shame on NBC and Chris Hansen. Hope you don't sleep well at night. I'm sick of this show now and don't plan to watch it anymore. I have lost any respect for Chris Hansen as well. I suggest, perhaps a show on how to supervise what your children are doing on the internet and how to control the content.
Let me first start off by saying I don't support these men or what they are doing and think it's nearly the worst thing you could do, BUT... Isn't it entrapment?? I mean first off, they are chatting with someone of age who lies about their age. Then, then when they ask if it's anyone associated with law enforcement and the 'decoy' says "NO", I think it's entrapment...
Hi Chris: I really love your show, and can't wait to it again next Tuesday. I am not sure who Mr. XYZ is, but he sounded like you've caught him in Long Beach California last weekend. Take care and thannks for the good works you do. See you next Tuesday.
I too find the "Catch a Predator" program absolutely fascinating, and I was even more intrigued when one of the investigations took place just miles from my residence. My opinion of the investigations is that they are absolutely commendable and heroic. In addtion, I was truly caught off guard by the opposition by the community in Murphy, Texas. I would look at the investigations as a neighborhood watch program with a little extra protection knowing that predators are being busted on the spot and unlikely to return.
As long as they want to air this show I am in support of it and will watch it. Every time NBC shoots this program they are catching more sexual predators, who cares about ratings. Local law enforcement is being aided by NBC. There is no way that they are able to follow all of these predators and handle traffic stops, domestic disturbances, and all of the rest of their day to day duties. If it were not for Chris Hansen and his segment of this show most of these men(including the SHCOOL TEACHER!) would still be out there scanning the chat rooms. That school teacher would still be sitting in the classroom staring at his students dreaming about doing unspeakable things to them. I think that if people really want to protect their children they should support this show ratings or no. Not only are they putting these guys away they are starting to deter some of these guys from potential attacks on our children. I think that Chris Hansen and Dateline NBC should be praised not critisized.
To all the staff who have organized this sting operation, Thank you, thank you so very much. Even though some of these men don't learn from their mistakes, just maybe some others will. If it's only one pervert then that's one pervert that can't get to my kids. These people are sick and that should be part of their sentence that when they are serving time behind bars, they get professional help. Thank you again and again and everytime you catch a predator.
The Police Chief and his officers should be thanked and credited for a job well done and not ridiculed for their efforts by some community members. Do these people think they live in a bubble? That "it can't happen here?" Get a grip folks, the cops and Dateline did you all a favor by performing this operation. These on-line predators are sick, shameful human beings who should be held accountable for their crimes. As a retired CT State Trooper who had the unfortunate duty to investigate sexual assault crimes, I say ratings or not-keep up the good work. I only wish I could still be the one slapping the cuffs on these criminals. And Chris, when are you coming to Connecticut? We have a few perverts here who need to be put away; I have some spare time and some well used handcuffs available to assist you in your efforts.
i think its great what dateline is doing i only wish it could be done all over these men are nasty sick perverts how could they even consider such a thing especially since alot of them have childeren of their own i live in ct and i would love for dateline to have a sting setup in ct that would be great or maybe police department in ct could set one up im sure alot of citizens would help i know i would thank you dateline for helping to protect nour childeren keep up the good work
Great series,I love to see the reaction on their face when they realize they got busted. These people need to be lock away and keep them away from our children.I can't wait for the next broadcast and I was wondering when you will be coming to my town.
I have watched this program a few times and i am glad that mr. hansen and nbc r doing what needs to be done when it comes to our children, but what concerns me is these men,(if that is what u want to call them) are the basis of the problem..there has to be someone that intializes the conversation and if there is a young girl out there contributing to the problem, then why r u not going out there and confronting there parents, who for some reason and letting them know what there daughter or son is up to,,to me it is a sick situation..Mr. Hansen , the only way to solve this problem is attack it from both ends,, not just one.
What would be good is to have a link and have all the pictures of men arrested and where they work (or used to work) and where they are from. Something else how many sex offenders are getting by by not regestering in Oklahoma they are not tracked.
I am surprised by the reaction of the citizens of Murphy, TX. Do they honestly think that predators, pedofiles and molesters don't live, teach, worship and play in their neighborhood? Attract them to the neighborhood? They're already there! The truth is there are some sick people who live behind those nice wooden doors, and most of them are fathers! One look at these guys and their professions (doctors, a rabbi, teachers, computer engineers, military), and it's obvious that many men are hiding dirty secrets in towns where we least expect it. Add to that the fact that a former local DA was soliciting a 14-year old boy, and that should be all the proof we need. Our children are not safe; not even from politicians. The councilman who got his nose out of joint needs to keep that in mind first. Politicians talk a good game, but they are useless when it come to actually doing something. Obviously, Murphy's law enforcement agency felt the need to conduct such a sting in their area. The resources and collaboration provided by Dateline and PJ must have been invaluable to them. Instead of getting angry at the poloice, step aside and let them do their jobs. Having this sting in your neighborhood probably makes it the safest place in the country right now. I applaud the police, Dateline and PJ. I'd gladly welcome them to my brand new sub-division in Phoenix anyday. I wonder who really lives in these half-million dollar homes.
I can't believe all the SICK, twisted minds that are in this world. I have two children , a boy 5 yrs and a girl 11 months, and to look in their sweet innocent faces I wonder how can anyone do such horrible things to children?? I only wish there were more agencies doing the job Dateline is doing with the police in catching these predators. Fantastic work catching these sickos!
