A “mea culpa” from one of the men in the last ‘predator’ report

Today, one of the men featured in our "To Catch a Predator" report posted a "mea culpa" on his Web site.

28-year-old Alvin King was seen in “To Catch a Predator” Long Beach last Tuesday.  He  was arrested, although he never entered the undercover house. He was picked up by Long Beach police at a nearby park as he met a decoy pretending to be a 13-year-old girl.  We later learned that he runs a site featuring pictures of women's feet.

He pleaded no contest to one count of an attempted lewd act upon a child, and to  one count of attempting to send harmful matter.

He posted this message on his blog:

I have received quite a few scary messages from people out there; but there have also been quite a few bright spots; from people who understand what it is that I’m trying to say.

“Again, none of this absolves my actions; I know what I did was wrong; But I do want everyone to know that I am not a pedofile. That’s not what motivated my actions at all.”

For those who have requested - The chat log is on the perverted justice website. I will decline to post a link, as I do not want to send taffic their way (voluntarily).

I’m sorry for what I’ve done. I regret putting myself in this situation; the rest of my responses will have to be limited on this issue; you are all welcomed to share your thoughts.

For those who are curious, below is the first part of their chat log. The difficult thing about producing “To Catch a Predator” is that it’s hard to get across how graphic and disturbing these chats truly are. If you read the transcript below, it’s clear that King starts the conversation, knew he was talking to a 13-year-old, is aware of “To Catch a Predator” on NBC, and is the first one to turn the conversation graphic and  sexual.

What you guys are forgetting to report is while he started the conversation - the person's profile was blank. He therefore could not have contacted the decoy knowing she was underage. http://profiles.yahoo.com/samantha_gurl01 << the profile shows an edited date of 9/11/06 - So there is no way for us to know what he saw when he was guided back to the profile. His chat was graphic; He admitted he was wrong. You guys should ease up at this point. It's clear the guy made a mistake, but is not a pedophile; the website you guys mention features nothing but Legal aged women. I think you guys have caused enough embarassment to this guy - enough is enough.

Dateline has gone just a litle too far with this show. Granted there are pervs out there but tricking any one person like this is really wrong.The men are dumb to fall for it but assuming parents were putting restrictions and being PARENTS to these young idiots on line then a scenerio such as this would not exist. It is a scenerio that does not exist! ANY parent leaving an under age child unsupervised for long periods of time (such as the TWO infamous hours men have drove to meet this "child")with the knowledge of this chat room or Myspace then, this parent should be liable for the safety of this kid should anyhting happen to them as they would by leaving their child in a house unsurpervised with a loaded gun in the open where they can shoot themselves, or shoot another person. Who really is the one to blame here? Kids dont need the internet. Schools should not encourage internet use for minors. parents should not have this service without parental control. Stop tricking these men into imaginary scenerios that other wise would not tempt their curiosity.

sorry, billy - he clearly states that he looked at her myspace page, which does usually contains pix and personal info. and he starts the graphic crap AFTER he finds out her age. he is a pedophile - he is looking for oral sex from a 13 year old! his website doesn't excuse his behavior. the other predators had legit jobs too...as do most pedophiles. he caused his own embarrassment. what would you think about this conversation if it had been your 13-year old daughter or sister? if he weren't a pedophile, he would have disconnected instead of continuing to chat.

To Billy: At 9:47 he acknowledged that she "was" 13, at 9:48 he said he'd go to jail if he hooked up with her, at 9:49 he mentioned a sex act he'd like if they hooked up, and at 9:52 he was worried that she might be trying to catch online predators. After all that, he showed up for the meet with someone *he* said, at 9:47:11, was 13. That wasn't just "a mistake". He seemed to be seriously worried about jail, but showed up anyway -- sounds compulsive to me. He may also have a compulsion about feet, but he seems to have no real compunctions about age... Also, if the profile was edited 9/11/06, then it seems unreasonable to assert that it was blank -- the chat seems to strongly imply that it had a picture which looked believably like a barefoot 13-year-old...

I watch this show every chance I get and I am very glad to see that these so called men are caught in the act. How can anyone think this guy is sorry for going after a child, he's only sorry, that he got caught for the second time. If anyone thinks this show goes to far, they might be a pedophile themself and no one is being tricked. Everyone that visits websites of that nature, already know what they are looking for when they log on. We need more shows and activist like this. Not only should this show continue in the US, but it needs to be broadcasted around the world. I think he deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law. When she said she was 13 he recognized and realized he was going to jail if he continued, but he continued anyway...why? It's real simple, he has a problem, he is a pedophile. He needs to be registered in every state and all people in the community needs to be aware when he moves in. He knows about the Datelins show and still went and conversed with her, he has a serious problem. While in jail he should be in a wing with people of his kind, and they should have pedophile AA or something to help them, so that when they return to society, they are transformed into new people.

Sick or twisted doesn't matter much either way, he's sorry he got caught, not sorry he came onto a child. I would like to start off this rant by saying that, I appreciate this show taking molesters off the streets. When there in prison I hope they are the one's being "taken advantage of" the way that they tried to take advantage of these kids. Now that said, I think that we as american's are traveling down a road of gender bias. When we want to hang these "MEN" for trying to have sex with underage girls and are making celebrities out of these "WOMEN" teachers having sex with boys, there is something wrong with the culture. Just cause it is a woman with an underage boy doesn't make it ok like it was projected to be in the media. These women were looking for sex just like the men there is no love involved. We need to come together as a collective whole and say that this is inappropriate on all levels. As a parent, I strongly urge having open dialog with your children. Let them know that they can trust you and that you will always be there for them. This is the key to being a good parent in the rapid expanding age of technology

For those who are railing at PJ and going on about how "someone needs to look into the legality of the program" etc. etc., do you honestly think that the law enforcement departments that participate WITH PJ & Dateline in these operations would be able to secure convictions if it WERE'NT legal? The primary rule for the PJ folks who participate is that they are NOT to approach online chatters. If you visit their site and read the chat logs, not once does the PJ decoy approach anyone. And for the previous poster who mentioned the T&C for Yahoo chats, I just went through the entire thing and I don't see it written anywhere that it's illegal to copy & paste a transcript of a chat elsewhere. Even if it did, I'm sure it would be illegal only in the case of posting someone else's conversation, not your own. The bottom line is, if you say something in a conversation that you are going to be embarrassed for others to read, then don't say it. The "red face test", if you will. Thumbs up to PJ. Keep doing what you do. As someone who has used the internet and chat for many years now, I'm already aware of the things that go on in chat rooms and IM's. There is a double standard here n the U.S.A. We seem 2 slap the woman offenders on their hands when they do what a man has done. There was a case last year about a young blond beautiful grammar schl teacher who was having "all the way sex" with her 13 year old student. She lost her husband, and her teaching certificate for having sex with this boy. The justice system gave her a slap on the hand because she was white, blond and beautiful teacher. She spent NO TIME in jail. She was given 10 years of house arrest. She can leave her home only to go to work. This immature woman deserved 2/b put n jail like the men do. There should b no exceptions 4 gender. Women or men who take advantage of a child should always spend time n jail. I have NO sympathy for any of these guys who think that the internet is fair game on the children who foolishly think that everybody who logs on is who they say they are. Parents stop trying 2/b ur children's friends and b their parents by setting guidelines for your children who use the internet.

I think the days where 13 year old girls are innocent and naive about the internet and online predators is long gone, as the past couple years have yielded tons of highly publicized stories just like this, and even a few major motion pictures. It's interesting that the naive ones that are falling for the lies and manipulation online are actually the "older men predators" instead of the defenseless young girls. That's a paradigm shift for ya!

Okay Parents try this on for size Perverted Justice nails YOUR son for chatting with a minor. They call YOUR Church YOUR schools YOUR work and tell them how YOU can'tbe trusted or what bad things they can come up with WHY ! because your going to defend your son right!I hope you do after all he is your flesh and blood.They WILL get YOUR phone number and YOUR name and post it on their website because your so careful of what your son does on-line.I have no problems when Dateline exposes pedophile on the Internet just don't like vigilante style justice. Don't you want Dateline to use LE in their sting operations including using LE to be the decoys?Pervereted Justice can only boast they caught about 140 to be convicted ,LE has already beat that 1000 times across the country.

Dateline should do a version of the show featuring Female preditors. I'm sure they are out there, older women seeking sex with underage boys or girls. It would be interesting to see the results in comparison to those of the men in relation to the number who show up and their reaction at being caught.

Any person of legal age(man or woman over age 18) has NO RIGHT to even think of having sex with a minor child (anyone under 18). I dont care what the minor looks like. I've heard stories where the man tries to play it off saying that this supposed 12 yr old looks like they are 18. You can't sit there and try and defend these people. I am a mother of 2 children ages 5 & 8 and if I EVER found anyone trying to talk to my children like that I would kill them or seriously maim them! As soon as the decoy said they were 12 or 13 that should have been the end of the conversation period. You can't seriously believe that a 21+ yr old person wants to "hang out" with a 12 or 13 year old. Especially when every one of these chats were VERY sexually explicit with the men literally spelling everything out that they wanted to do to the decoy in the hot tub or anywhere else in a house with a 13 yr old child and no parents! I mean even some of the people that showed up for this "date" brought cameras and condoms. One guy was even busted twice by dateline! You would think that after the first time being busted he would have learned his lesson, but NO. He was right back out there trying to have sex with underaged children from the internet again and got busted again by the same people!! Personally I think that each one of these people should be castrated on the spot. Can't think about having sex with a minor if there is nothing left of Mr. Winky to have sex with!

The men shown on "To Catch A Predator" are fully aware the girls they are attempting to solicit are underage; yet, they persist in their actions of their own free will. Pedophile or molester is merely a difference in semantics, they both are predators. My 13 year old "teenager" is still my "child." Dateline and PJ, by please keep up the good work.
