Predator: Internet or social problem?

As of this writing, our 'To Catch a Predator' team has visited 6 states, 8 locations, and has broadcast almost 15 hours. What’s been eye opening to all of us is, especially recently, is that many of those who are now coming to the undercover houses have actually seen our broadcasts. They actually worry out loud that the person on the other end might be part of a Dateline investigation.

And still they come.

They finish their sexually graphic chats online with individuals clearly identified as underage, they get in their cars, sometimes driving hours, and most shocking of all, they open the door to a stranger’s home and walk in!

You tell me. Is there a problem here?  If so, what does it tell us?

What I do know is Dateline didn’t discover the problem. Everyone knows that the Internet has some very bad neighborhoods; ones we warn our children to stay away from. For years, law enforcement has conducted stings of those who try to use the Internet to exploit sex, either involving children, or simply selling pornography.

What we did do was find a way to illustrate the problem.

When we decided to observe what Perverted-Justice does, I knew it would be interesting to see, in real time, how online predators communicate with someone they believe is a minor.  But I wondered if one of them would actually be brazen enough to leave the cocoon of cyberspace, get in his car, and try to meet the “child.” And if they did show up at a house, would they run?

I asked if we could actually get one of them to come inside a house.  If we did, could we get him to talk?

What I was looking for was person-to-person conversation. Some sustained communication that might shed some light on how online predators think.  How would they explain what they do and why they do it?

I was the first to think this was a long shot.  Why would an online predator stop to chat once he knew he had stepped into a very different situation than the one he’d expected?

Producer Lynn Keller along with our hidden camera team went to work. A house was rented.  Multiple cameras were installed.  The Perverted-Justice volunteers (posing as minors) went into the chat rooms were almost immediately approached by adults for sex, and proceeded to “invite” those adults to our house.

Then our team waited. What happened next was astounding. When Correspondent Chris Hansen greeted these men instead of a young child, most froze like the proverbial deer in the headlights. Except these deer were talking.  And talking… and talking.

What resulted was an incredible glimpse into the mind of the predator. What I am convinced Dateline has done for the first time, is illustrate that these predators don’t look like snakes, or worms, or whatever creatures run for cover when rocks are turned over.

These are often normal, average, next door neighbors. Respected members of society.  Teachers, doctors, clergymen. That’s what I think has triggered it all.  And this is why  I truly believe the Dateline series has made us pay much more attention to the problem.

When we began our investigation we had no idea it would evolve into a series of broadcasts.  But since these men continue to arrive at our undercover houses, all looking for sex with a minor, we’re still asking what it means?  Is it merely an Internet problem?  Or does it say something about deeper social ill that needs to be explored?

We’re still trying to figure it out, and we hope our viewers are trying to learn along with us.

At this time, I really hope you are protecting your crew and Chris Hanson from a predator that may decide to bring along a weapon, especially as it seems some are coming back a second time. Let's face it, none of them want to be caught or known as sexual predators. Just a thought. Thank you.
THESE CHAT ROOMS HAVE TO BE SHUT DOWN IF THAT'S WHAT IT TAKES. Worse things than this have been done.
I happened to tune in last night. This was and is a great idea. Some of these guys you almost feel sorry for, They cry (some of them) and some can sence right off something isn't right but they are led astray when asked to go see the hot tub. Its amazing they go all out like that, which makes you think. Are they getting by sometimes with it to take such risks? Do they tell you or admit that a few girls have fallen prey. I mean obviously they have it seems because they are so brazen and I believe ill. You are so right, some seems really like our neighbors, friends, etc. What are these girls looking for anyways? Sex? Someone to be their friend? Just curious, is this girls that are starved for attention? I think if the internet had been around when I was a teen, I cannot truthfully say that I wouldn't NOT fall prey. I was always looking for a Father figure. Maybe thats what some of them are doing. I would love your in put. Maybe its just a game to the girls??
I am an avid supporter of your program and efforts and great success in catching these predators! I am a victim of sexual abuse as a young child which was many years ago. It happened in a very small rural community and the man was simply asked to leave as opposed to any type of prossecution or jail time. It is my understanding that he continued to assault young girls and never served time. When it happened to me ( in the late 60's) it was a subject that was never discussed. I was left to believe that I had done something wrong because no one told me otherwise. In my early 20's I sought counseling to try to get over it. The vicitms are indeed that - victims. I am so glad that someone is finally taking these crimes seriously and standing up for the innocent children that truly never get over it - I haven't yet at 45 and highly doubt I ever will. Kudos to Chris Hanson for putting himself on the line to catch these sick, sick people. I have but one prejudice - pedophiles. From what I know they are incurable and I don't believe they diserve a second chance. All the efforts and funds should go to the children of these vicious and sick crimes and throw away the key to the perpetrators. Thank you so much NBC for all that you do - don't ever stop helping our children!
i think its a great thing that you guys are doing this but also its intrapment.if the guys says (hey youre to young and im a report you Yahoo) then the undercover agent should leave it alone and not provoke it anymore with the convorsation...dont keep insiting to keep talking to the guy not everyone is guylte..anyways maybe the parents should put a block on the chat rooms where potential pretadors might bee.keep up the good work and catch reall predators and not intetionalie get them..thats what s wrong with this country we not getting the real criminals..ty
I didn't see the entire show this evening, but I'm glad to see you'll are still wheeling them in. Thank you for protecting children. I'm a older women now and stronger, unlike when I was 7 or 8, I couldn't defend myself because it happened to me. Thank you Chris.
Men are scum. Wherever there is crime, war and misery, there is a man! When is our educational system going to realize it and give additional education to men on HUMANNESS? And more men need to be replaced by women in positions of power so we have more balance on society; certainly laws would be thougher on sex crimes and porn would be controlled more. It is sick how little concept men have of some form of ethics. Porn is a major problem in society but who does anything to stop it? Instead its becoming more common. Can't people have sex in their own homes without making it an industry that victimizes millions?
Tammy am I to understand women don't commit sex crimes? And I guess women don't look at and buy porn either. And all women everywhere hold themselves to a very high standard of ethics. Instead of making general comments against a sex, group, type of people, lets hold the people who commit these terrible crimes accountable. Lets try and stay away from labeling!
I love your program! The work you guys are doing is wonderful. Many of these have families-who know what they have done to their so called loved ones(children). It's a shame that in America a sexual predator/pedafile/rapist gets away w/months of probation or jail. If you sell drugs to an adult, you get hard time- it makes no sense..These "Monsters" should serve natural life sentences for harming/destroying children's lives...They cannot defend themselves-just imagine-a man w/a child, it's upsetting, disturbing and unthinkable- what hte hell runs through these peoples minds. The thing is, it's your next door neighbor!
I do think we have both an internet and social problem. I would recommend parents to monitor their children's activities closely, be it internet or even phone and make it their duty to find out who their friends are. We live in a perverted society and I understand that even if parents try to be more involved with their kids, predators will find other means of satisfying their demented minds, like going to international countries where kids are even more vulnerable, but parents need to step up as well. I am not a parent but I was a child who was molested by an adult. To this day, I wished my parents had paid more attention and be more involved in my life AND more importantly if they had taught me what to do if a stranger touched me or talked to me in a bad way or even to know when to call the cops, I would've had the bastard in jail instead of him getting away with it and molesting other kids.
I enjoy the NBC Dateline programs and how they bust these pervs who are really low lifes of our society. What I don't understand is why they just get a slap on the wrist when they should serve some jail time, even for a first offense... two weeks might really scare the sh#t out of these guys. I really felt bad for the guy who worked at Nickelodeon, ok, not really, but what was he doing in a chatroom and sending all those video clips to a 13 year old. Doesn't make any sense. Again, thank you Chris Hansen for some solid reporting.
I just want to say this is a great sting that is going on. We all need to do are part in catching these sick people. Also wondering how many people you chat with online but never showup at the appointed time, like they were just having a fantasy online
Child abuse is parental neglect. You eliminate parental neglect, you eliminate child abuse. It's that simple. If you cant spend the time, don't do the crime. Child abuse is parental neglect.
I applaud what is being done to catch these criminals, and I think it should be said that they are treated far too gently. I think they should suffer the kind of depravity they hope to inflict or have inflicted in the past. I think we live in a society where "rehabilitation" is overemphasised. I think that people keep comitting these crimes because they are not afraid of the consequences. The government and law enforcement need to make them afraid, and yes I am a supporter of the death penalty, and I think that sex offenders are no better than murderers, just think of the amount of suicides and otherwise ruined lives of people who've had their innocence ripped from them. Last but not least, I think that more emphasis needs to be placed on the responsibility of parents to be involved in their child's lives, and to moniter what they do. Now to be clear this does not excuse the behavior of the offenders one iota, but I am so tired of hearing people blame their children's behavior on movies, music, media, etc... I went through hell as a child, I was molested at a very young age on several different occasions, and I have grown up to be a respectable, considerate person who wouldn't harm a fly much less another human being. There is no excuse for not knowing what your child is doing online, especially with all the resources that we have, and how much more public awareness there is about predators. It's a combination of things that need to happen, but I urge parents, take an active role in your child's life!!! And to the powers that be, law enforcement and the government that makes laws, you must put fear back into these men and women committing these crimes! There have got to be dire consequences for doing these things!!! I'm not talking about public hanging, but the fact that most of these men simply walk is appalling. I still wish to express my respect for the people at Dateline, and I think you should multiply your efforts! If people do not want to follow societies laws, if people want to be criminals and predators, then they should pay the price. Thank you.
I am very impressed and i think that his is a very brve show to put on. There is way to many predators and the sad part they are allow to be on the internet.

I keep wondering if catch a predator will come to massachusetts especially sense when i was little i was sexually abused.

I was young and just too young to sit through the court but he is still out there and everytime i watch the show i wonder if i see him.

I think this is a great way to catch predators but i wish there is more way to catch them because sadly to say there not just on the internet they are everywhere.

I think that these men that show up are so sick and i wish the legal justice was more strict and i just pray that it wont happen to my children.

thanks for listening to me
It is amazing how you guys can catch perverted people whose fantasys can and will destroy a persons life, thank you is all i have to say??? Keep up the good wrk.

I want each of those who are a part of producing these investigations know that I applaud everything that you do. I have four children and it greatly concerns me how many perverts are out there preying on children. One of my best friends works for the Gaston County Sheriff Department and his responsibility is registering and tracking sex offenders in our county. It amazes me how many offenders there are in our community. I believe that shows like yours will put a thought in the back of those who comtemplate such horrific acts that they will get caught. I only wish the punishment for these despicable deeds were more severe. Thank you for what you are doing. I only hope that the criticism that you have drawn will now sway you from it.
There should be STEEPER and more severe punishment for the "act" of attempting to meet a minor for any kind of sexual act, that's what their actions say.  Well, that and they don't care about being caught...
Morals went down the drain with the 20th century LONG ago...
